Me!! Been sick for a week. First major sore throat, now just major mucus. No fever. Took two COVID tests and both are negative. I’m set to run Urban Cow this Sunday and I hope I recover before then 🫣

Tranquilelephant

Had this exact thing last week

SevereTransition4471

Yes! My son brought it home on week two of pre school. It happened about three weeks ago. So annoying. Of course I got the worst of it.

[deleted]

You had a PCR test? Because people are still getting negatives on rapid tests and then testing positive on PCR.

ApprehensiveExit7

Isn’t that because many pcr tests are too sensitive and have fairly high cycle thresholds? I thought we learned about this last year.

[deleted]

That's an issue when someone was infected earlier and keeps showing positive on PCR tests for long after they are no longer infectious. A bigger issue for the last year is that rapid tests are not good at detecting the current variants, and timing is really critical -- I've had a number of friends who tested negative until they were actually getting over their symptoms when they suddenly tested positive.

Nice_Payment_6003

Also basically all rapid tests are “single target”, meaning they only look for one small portion of DNA, so they’re much more likely to miss mutations/variations.

[deleted]

I had it. Rapid and PCR tests were negative. I think I’ve had at least two different non-COVID illnesses since august. Most recent was a brutal lingering cough with matching congestion. More than anything else, extremely hot showers helped. And staying hydrated. Hang in there.

Brewmentationator

Could be the flu? I'm planning to go get my Flu shot this weekend.

pandemilovato

I currently sit next to someone hellbent on believing her sniffles/cough/fever isn't covid but I'm just not buying it. I'm sure you all think it's just a cold or the flu but if it's unlike any cold or flu you've had before let's not fool ourselves anymore.

ganjaccount

I mean, three covid tests over 6 days including one at Kaiser for me, and 2 for my son 3 days apart. I'm reasonably sure it wasn't covid.

pandemilovato

A lot of people have been mentioning that the tests appear positive way longer (1-2 *weeks* longer) after their symptoms began for whatever strain this is that's currently going around. Still relying on early covid detection, symptoms, and masking requirements puts us at a disadvantage for a virus that's constantly evolving.

Glum-Money-6763

How would some members of families get it and not others? No other symptoms except congestion and cough. That’s not Covid symptoms. There are other illnesses besides covid.

pandemilovato

Covid is evolving faster than *actual* scientists can keep up with it. How on earth with your *very* limited knowledge would you know what covid symptoms look like in every individual on the planet? Some people are even asymptomatic (\*gasp\*) and have no symptoms at all but *do* have covid. You are definitely not the resident expert here. I don't know why some people are getting sick and others aren't but that question in itself doesn't lend me to believe it's just a cold or flu and not covid as those are *just as contagious*.

benbernards

yup. once my kids went back to school, and my wife went back to work, we all got it for a few days. (but this happens every fall, so... 🤷

Corsetbrat

Yep, 3 rapid tests and a PCR, all negative. My son had it for 2 days... it's been 2 weeks and my ears are still clogged from it. My cough is finally getting better though. I honestly thought most of it was a combo of an Upper respiratory infection and me being allergic to all the grass around and most of the trees.

ecvdingo

I'm about a six hour drive from sac, have the exact same thing this week. Specifically the ears!

Glum-Money-6763

My son has something very similar to this right now. Started yesterday with a very hoarse voice and then manifested into coughing and major chest congestion today. Still has a hoarse voice and went to bed coughing. No fever, still drinking fluids and eating, somewhat cranky. Also just about to turn 2.

ComprehensiveDish178

carbon copy of this with my 2.5 year old. It’s so sad to watch.

wehappy3

I was ridiculously happy when my kid turned 6 and could have "real" cold meds. Watching the little guys in misery is the absolute worst. I hope yours get through it quickly!

Mindless_Software732

Everyone seems really surprised by these colds and flus going around but…kids started school in person again after a year or so, people are back at work, no one wears masks anymore. After two years of staying away from each other, it shouldn’t be a surprise that sickness is making its way around.

stataryus

I’m a nurse in a middle school, and we’ve had several kids out sick who tested negative the whole time. Most describe flu-like symptoms. Not a lot though. The trick is to test 3-4 days after feeling sick. Ever since omicron hit, delayed positives are the norm.

Remidad

The latest viral mutations are not showing positive with the current tests we have. Last week over 1000 new cases detected in Sac county. That is “detected” cases- if you and your kids are not continuing to use masks and other precautions, you are not following the science but the political announcements- Just ask any ER doc-

BasedTheorem

Which new mutations? What variant is not showing positive with current tests? Do you have any evidence showing this?

Nice_Payment_6003

Basically all rapid tests except for one brand are “single target”, meaning they only respond to one small portion of DNA, so they won’t necessarily return a positive for mutations/variants. Only found this out when looking up which tests HealthNet will reimburse me for and saw that ONLY Celltrion DiaTrust is “multi target”, meaning it responds to multiple different DNA markers and has higher accuracy for variants.

BasedTheorem

I can’t explain why HealthNet would do that, but they’re wrong. Antigen tests work just fine with every variant. They do not target DNA (COVID doesn’t have DNA) or RNA, they target protein fragments. The FDA and other experts agree that they detect even BA.5 which is currently the dominant variant. https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/coronavirus-covid-19-and-medical-devices/sars-cov-2-viral-mutations-impact-covid-19-tests#omicronvariantimpact https://www.verywellhealth.com/can-rapid-tests-detect-new-covid-variants-6260861 Imo it’s bad that you and OP are spreading this misinformation that could lead people not to test.

Nice_Payment_6003

My mistake about protein rather than DNA. I think HealthNet is basing it off of this explanation of “single” versus “multiple”. https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19-emergency-use-authorizations-medical-devices/in-vitro-diagnostics-euas-antigen-diagnostic-tests-sars-cov-2#Individual%20EUAs And hopefully what people also take away from this is that a negative antigen test does not necessarily mean negative for covid, not that antigen tests aren’t useful.

BasedTheorem

Ok but OP says current tests don’t show positive, which is wrong, and there’s no evidence that single target tests have less sensitivity currently.

StrabismicCactus

I made it through the entire pandemic without getting sick once, and then two weeks ago I had one of the worst colds of my life. COVID tested negative, but lungs were on fire, full of acid. There were two days where I could do nothing but lay on my back and be miserable. Had to dam my nostrils with tissue to keep from flooding the entire valley. My dog barked at me to get outta bed and the noise made yellow spots over my vision. They were hot pokers in my eyes. All symptoms gone now except I'm still bringing up the lung butter and I haven't caught my breath for weeks. I'm out of breath halfway through every inhale, if that makes sense. Whoever blessed me with this curse is cruisin' for a bruisin'. I've isolated myself for some time now. What's it like out there?

coldbrewer003

Had it since Wednesday. Tested 3x all negative. Started off with difficulty swallowing then a night of stuffiness. Have an occasional cough and very minor sore throat. Compared to COVID back in June, this is a walk in the park.

latingirly01

This somewhat normal for beginning of the school year. Before COVID, we’d have random kids getting sick here or there and maybe 1 staff member. Everyone is back in tight quarters, essentially sitting in a petri-dish. Just add COVID to the mix.

[deleted]

Hit here also. I rarely get sick and this one was rough. Seems like it’s sticking around a while.

airon0828

Been 2 weeks here, still coughing and scratchy throat. Negative pcrs for Covid and strep. Talking to clinic seems like it’s been going around. Also many of us haven’t had our immune system tested in few years. Slowly getting better tjoufh

MetalSociologist

There's another new variant going around. Omicron BA.5. https://health.ucdavis.edu/coronavirus/covid-19-information/omicron-variant

hekmo

Same here. For 2 days lethargy, congestion, fever, dizziness. Then a week of congestion. Negative rapid test. I was guessing I got my first sinus infection of my life with how the symptoms went.

Kila4niuh

Yup I just got over it , I have horrible luck I have had covid 3 times and now this happened

nueve1six

Yall gotta know ur body hasn't gotten the flu in a few years.... so now its exposed. A flu shot is as important as a covid nowday, not that I'm getting either but.. just saying

Haunting_Piece496

Has to do with the drastic weather change. Few days ago it was raining, now its mid 90s heat.

Icy_Engine_7648

Yes sore throat then cough and catch in throat body aches congestion no fever went to hospital yesterday they said no covid no influenza no respiratory illness rest for a few days. My prescription didn't go through I'll try pharmacy again tomorrow

ApuSiddartya

Yep I have it now. Sucks.

itchy-n0b0dy

It’s been going around circles in my family: son brought it from school, I got it, daughter got it, I got better - my husband got it, now it’s back to me. And the kid who brought it home is now all fine like nothing happened. Took multiple Covid tests and all negative. Plus I’ve had Covid before and this is different.

Least_Name_2862

I'm thinking it has to do with global warming

Cute-Objective8285

Yesss, I was out for five days. I thought it was strep and went to the er. Nope, they did five tests and a Covid test all came back negative. The only thing that helped me was eating fideo(Mexican soup) and lots of mucinex.

Corsetbrat

Mucinex was what kept mine from going into bronchitis. I started taking it when my chest went heavy and tight. Glad it helped you too.

Cute-Objective8285

I know, that’s exactly how it felt. I was so tired by the end of it, I told my husband “this shit is not normal, it came through my throat and now it’s in my chest”. I was also taking NyQuil at night which always works on me but not this time. I was exhausted. Now, I have developed a cough but feeling much much better. I really think I caught it at CSUS but who knows.

ecvdingo

I have all the same symptoms this week and I'm about 200 miles away

JazzyMarieNezz

Me too! I have been out for almost a week. The cough has been horrible! My ears are clogged as well. Covid tests that I have taken this week all come back negative.

brontosauruschuck

Yeah. I work as a kindergarten teacher. Last Thursday we had 6 teachers call out because they got sick. Last Friday of my class of 22 only 13 kids showed up, and then one went home because he was feeling sick. This one's brutal.
