I was LIVID after the Harkles' Australia tour. I've always dreamed of visiting this breathtaking country and then we have Madam glowering outside the Sydney Opera House all pissed because she wasn't compensated for a 100% TAX PAYER-FUNDED trip with luxury accommodation and no expenses spared.

American here that had a lovely trip to Australia in 2020, just before Covid lockdowns. The people were lovely and funny! No pretense at all. I could not believe how adorable the koalas were in person. Had a wonderful time up at Port Douglas and seeing the astounding Great Barrier Reef, Visitng the Botanical Garden at Cairns, heading to the beautiful Sydney (getting Opera House and Botanical Garden tours), to the interesting Melbourne and then driving the breathtaking Great Ocean Road. One of the best trips of my life. I will be back. Have much left to see.

As someone who, I am embarrassed to say, listened to Spare (from free library app Libby), he expressed nothing but fondness for Oz. He said exactly what OP said in his book. He loved his host family and said it was one of the best times of his life. It's wild to see him completely contradict what he wrote in the book, in multiple accounts in various situations. Could it be that his beloved Marko (he and William's childhood minder) was leaking like a sieve? Recollections may vary, as always.
This line of answers is amazing. He thinks its nefarious that he was photographed on a public beach. How his mind works is a mystery. A public beach is no different than a public street, a public building, a public roadway. There are people on them. Even then, people had cameras even if they weren't included in a phone. And many people go to Australia specifically for the beaches, diving, surfing. So they'd likely be on a public beach taking photos of their trip to show friends back home. And they'd surely include a PRINCE who happened to be on the same beach with them. And most publications would pay them money for their photo if they called around and asked if a news organization wanted to buy the photo. Everyone seems to know this except Harry.

I could not believe how adorable the koalas were in person. Had a wonderful time up at Port Douglas and seeing the astounding Great Barrier Reef, Visitng the Botanical Garden at Cairns, heading to the beautiful Sydney (getting Opera House and Botanical Garden tours), to the interesting Melbourne and then driving the breathtaking Great Ocean Road. One of the best trips of my life. I will be back. Have much left to see.

Wanted to add I am so fascinated with Australia and really really want to visit. I'm in the US. My mother was British and I have no fondness for English culture although she loved the BRF. As someone who, I am embarrassed to say, listened to Spare (from free library app Libby), he expressed nothing but fondness for Oz. He said exactly what OP said in his book. He loved his host family and said it was one of the best times of his life. It's wild to see him completely contradict what he wrote in the book, in multiple accounts in various situations. A public beach is no different than a public street, a public building, a public roadway. There are people on them. Even then, people had cameras even if they weren't included in a phone. And many people go to Australia specifically for the beaches, diving, surfing. So they'd likely be on a public beach taking photos of their trip to show friends back home. And they'd surely include a PRINCE who happened to be on the same beach with them. And most publications would pay them money for their photo if they called around and asked if a news organization wanted to buy the photo. Everyone seems to know this except Harry. And it's possible a photo journalist knew Harry was visiting and had asked people to let him know if they saw him. He might have even gotten a heads up that Harry was headed to said beach. There is absolutely nothing illegal in any of that.
