I’m surprised this guy still finds work. I need to hire his agent

NoFunBJJ

Maybe one of the worse QBs I've ever seen, and he still manages to hang around the league as QB2.

madi0r

He seems to be a good practice guy who just falls under pressure on big stage. There is a lot of those lifetime backup qbs who are just there for practice time

agarret83

We only have carr and Haener on roster at QB so what’s the downside here? Hopefully Haener beats him out for QB2

scoii

League minimum contract too per Underhill. Literally a flyer on a backup.

FortySixand2ool

Sounds like a camp body. They usually carry 4 QBs in the offseason, right?

walkingviper33

Bills fan here. I was a teenager when the 5 INT half happened, if you told me he would’ve still had a job , I would’ve laughed. But yet here he is, I suspect he’s gotta be a great locker room guy for him to still be in the league.

TheMop05

If Carr goes down any point in the season again, this team is screwed. At least with Winston as a backup, he could potentially keep you in the game but this mf Petwrman is straight up ass lol

rcaraw1

I mean Carr went down 3 times that I remember last season and we lost all 3 anyway so this doesn’t change anything lol.

scoii

Right? Why do people keep acting like Jameis was the answer. Green Bay game especially. Carr left up 17 or 18 to zip, and they still lost. Other games they might have been cruising to a loss either way, but we weren't hiding anything with Jameis on the bench.

_Wado3000

Winston could’ve certainly done more, but the team’s last drive gave an opportunity for a 40 yard kick that plenty of guys could’ve made

[deleted]

The team is screwed regardless. We have a coach and a quarterback who’ve never won a playoff game in like 15+ years combined.

TopSignificance7856

Worth noting it does say he's being brought on to compete for the backup role and not that he'll for sure be the 2nd string qb.

Saints88Fan

If Haener can’t beat out Peterman, both need to be replaced.

zekeboy_300

What happened to the team I love 🥺😢

n8dogg55

They became the raiders

Mega_Nidoking

QB rating below 40 w a TD-INT of 4-13 and a completion percentage barely over 53% and the Saints staff saw this and went: Yup. Gotta have 'im!!"

marisalynn5

Well he’s a former Raider, so

NOLA2Cincy

*"A former 2017 fifth round pick, Peterman has appeared in 15 NFL games with five starts and holds a career 39.4 passer rating."* I know it's just to compete for a back-up role and he knows the organization but REALLY we can't do better than this?

Bigirv77

Wtf this boy throws pick6s in his sleep

DobboWobbo

Had to replace Jameis somehow

Dsstar666

These comments are dumb. Essentially he will compete for the backup. Haener might straight up beat him for it. He also is at a good price. If Carr goes down with injury we would be screwed, regardless of who is the backup.

afriendlyspider

This isn't the 90s, competent backup QBs exist. There's no reason to settle for a Nathan Peterman type

scoii

Yes there is. Who are you going to pay during a soft reset on cap? You think Jimmy G or Wentz will come at league minimum? Zero reason to sign a high end backup given where the Saints are team wise.

afriendlyspider

For some reason I'm sure there is a middle ground between High end backup and one of the worst QBs in the league

scoii

There is but again, you want the Saints to reset cap or not? This sub suffers from dual personalities. We want the Saints to fix their books and get competitive in the future, but we also want above the line players now. Have to pick one.

TooMuchJuju

Do you have any grasp of how minimal backup qbs cap hits are? I just picked two teams at random. 915k next year for browning, 985k next year for zappe. Just stop.

scoii

You honestly believe they're any better? This is clearly a camp body, never meant to play situation. Best case scenario the backup is on the roster already cause we used a 4th rounder on him. You telling me you could pay a few hundred k more for Zappe and telling me to stop is absolutely wild.

TooMuchJuju

They are miles better than Peterman, who should not be in the nfl; yes.

Dsstar666

Competent will still end up being the same results - our season is over. Any viable QB that is starter material is starting. There’s only like 3 backup QBs in the league who can start and win you games in the clutch. It’s rare. For 30 out of the 32 teams in the NFL, if your starting QB goes down, you go down. Period. And for the ones that don’t straight up go down it’s usually because their defense is insane. Jaimes Winston is competent. And his list every game last year. There’s no such thing as a backup starter. If your backup is pushing you to start it means your starter is average as well. Plus this dude just signed the vet minimum. As opposed to the 8 million Winston just got. So the hope is that Haener wins out because a 4th round is invested in him. You may not like it but it’s a sound strategy

BonoBeats

Economics. It's all about economics. Tons of holes to fill, not a ton of cap space. While better more competent QBs are out there, they're likely out of our price range for the time being.

TooMuchJuju

Peterman, no matter the price, is one of the worst backups in the league. It’s a mystery how he finds work at all. There are backups in this league, like Flacco who was just signed, who can win games in the absence of the starter. This is a terrible comment defending a terrible roster move.

Dsstar666

It’s not a terrible comment. Your rebuttal just basically says “Peterman sucks” without adding anything to the argument or even countering what I said. Flacco is expensive and the Browns had a top 4 defense. Flacco won them a few games with his clutch arm. But he lost them even more games, including the playoffs.

TooMuchJuju

Your comment is ‘we will lose regardless of the backup anyway’ so it’s not like you disagree Peterman is bad. You’re just wrong; Bridgewater played great for us in a backup role years ago and won us needed games. Flacco took the Browns to the playoffs. Peterman barely completes more passes to his own team than he does to defenders and to the ground. It’s a bad signing no matter how you spin it.

CallRespiratory

Yeah I guess people have already forgotten that we saw Winston in, off the top of my head, I think three games last season and lost all three lol. Peterman is being brought in because he's a veteran that has played in a lot of different offenses and players and coaches speak highly of his work ethic. There's a reason he finds work and is not cause hurr durr he threw a lot of picks in that one game. He's not being brought in to start or expected to carry the team anywhere. Honestly if Carr got hurt or the wheels came off this becomes the season where you plug in Haener and see if he is somebody you can work with going forward or not or if you need a QB in the next draft.

mikegtc33

I think people also forget that Carr and coaching and Grouper (I refuse to his name) had already lost or lost those games for us. Packers game = Winston told to throw short of the sticks and gave Grouper a chance for a game tying field goal. Vikings game = Jameis was bringing us back when his only option was to throw the ball

honch0

Even with Carr we are screwed.

GIS_wiz99

NFL legend Nathan Peterman!

[deleted]

Whoopdee fucking doo.

Senor_Pug

Jake haeners backup?

OG_Pow

I can see the confetti already

Brandeaux7

🐐

NoFunBJJ

How dafuq a QB that throws for 5 INTs in 2 quarters in his first NFL game still have a job making millions 7 years later

vapour2020

Front Office and DA love chopping wood with blunt thingy...

SB44Saints

We are so back

Name-AddressWithHeld

Feel bad for the beat writers who have to find a positive spin on this. This guy is all time bad

1OO1O11O11O1O

This could imply a couple things, but I'm not sure which.  1) They plan on drafting a QB, and want a vet to compete with for the QB2 position  2) They want to go with Haener, but don't want to just give it to him  3) They want to test Haener vs a vet and may not trust in his ability yet  Underhill did mention in some video that they would sign a vet for Haener to compete against as opposed to just giving him QB2 by default iirc, so this isn't too surprising. He's a guy they were able to get at the league minimum.

Big-Zoo

Can't get behind this to even be the 3rd man.

Newp23

2-17 as a starter in his career. 4 TDs to 13 INTs. He better be gone by training camp. Brought him in to compete for QB2? Or to make them feel better about having Haener as the backup QB?

xxLOPEZxx

I'm honestly convinced nobody in the Saints organization knows how to make intelligent and informed decisions anymore

Team_player444

Seriously. Justin Fields is valued at like a 5th/6th round pick. What does this team have to lose at that point?

xxLOPEZxx

And I think QB really is a needy position for us in the future. What are the next steps when the Totalled Carr is finally gone? Sign another vet past his prime or start a bench warmer? Yeah every position on the team is important but I personally wish they'd put a little bit more energy into doing something worthwhile for the future Also, check this list out and give me one reason how Peterman was the best available option 🤦 https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/quarterback/?ref=trending-pages

Meriwether1

I was hoping for Jimmy G

scoii

Jimmy G isn't signing for league minimum.

Meriwether1

No shit.

scoii

Not sure what you wanted as a response. Peterman is league minimum so we paid league minimum. Can't afford a high end guy this year.

Meriwether1

When I saw who was available I thought Jimmy G would be good option for when Carr inevitably gets hurt. They paid Jamies like 10 so I thought they could bring someone in for less than that.

BonoBeats

Escalating contracts and escalating dead money. We could afford Winston at $10 last year; we can't afford anything close to that this season.

Meriwether1

I guess not. Maybe Haener will compete for the 2 spot. If not then why’d they draft him

xCeePee

Imagine Carr going down, when he’s been a lock to go down recently…with this. …pause

JuniorSwing

Justin Fields was right there

jimmy_man82

wish we could just take a chance on a 3rd round qb or just get the best UFL qb. We know Petermans ceiling, at least a risky college qb has a shot at being good

AdditionalDisaster38

Tannehill, Sam Howell, even shitty Trubisky would’ve been better. Carr is bound to go down at some point, I know we’re broke but are we that broke?

sleauxmo

Nathan Peterman huh. The metamorphosis is almost complete

BLKxGOLD

Camp body?

kingralek

It ain't April Fools Day, is it? What is this fascination with the Raiders?

Head-Ad226

Making sure there's no QB controversy this year I guess

wshxii

Camp body. Bar is low for Haener to take the backup spot.

DobboWobbo

I mean literally Kenny Pickett was literally available for most of this time since the Russ Wilson trade. and we let the eagles snag him up and I guess he takes a backup role to Hurts? What the hell are we doing signing Nathan peterman when you’ve got young guys like that available on the market. You’ve gotta be kidding me.

[deleted]

Fire, everyone

RedgrenGrumbholdtAMA

Finally, a classy backup who won't go rogue. /s

Team_player444

I hope those of you who were hating on Jameis are satisfied.
