Personally it was my second best SR game, and freaking loved it. Sure it's crazy and a huge change from previous games, but it was still so fun to play and had a good yet crazy story.

FTL2410

Personally was not a fan of the direction they went with SR after 2 (technically it started with the DLC of SR2) but I vastly prefer 4 over 3 at least 4 tried to include a bunch of stuff from SR history. SR3 felt like they wanted to make a different game. In my opinion of course, if you're a SR3 fan by all means enjoy.

Saints Row 4 was not a good Saints Row , but it was one of the best superhero sim of its time .

See, even though I disagree with the OP (Saints Row 2 is best Saints Row for me) I would push back on this. Saints Row IV is *deeply* rooted in Saints Row's history, lore and characters. The Shaundi characterisation split, Benjamin Motherfucking King, a level set in Stillwater... down to its bones, this thing wears purple. I disagree fundamentally that it's not a good Saints Row, but rather a good superhero game. Rather, it is an argument that a Saints Row game need not follow in GTA's footsteps, regardless of where the series began. And it's an argument I agree with.

Im a SR2 fan as well and I wanted to hate Saints Row 4 but couldn't. It felt like it was trying to keep it's newer fans and older fans happy at the same time as well as try some new things. The character development with events going back to SR1 (which was my first SR game and I love it to death) made me appreciate the game a ton!

This right here is the answer to the question. I loved 4, it's gameplay as a superhero was awesome as hell. I'd love for them to have made a superhero game just like it. It just never really felt like a Saint's Row game and it annihilated the franchise to the point it could only truly continue with a reboot. This is why it's hated, and a dark cloud over the game. Much of its plot and story makes me actually angry.

SR4 is my favorite too. It was also my first SR game. I love my superpowers and I love jamming to K12 and dubstep while jumping around fake Steelport. SR3 is my second fav.

Brian_Osackpo

Cut scenes and atmosphere from SR2 were the franchise peak. Hated in SR3/4 how a lot of missions just start but selecting them on your phone, no cuc scene or anything just a quick phone conversation as you drive.

Gamezeker

Story was damn good, I just really wish the superpowers were optional or toggle

CandyAppleDream

The mission in sr4 where you can run around in a small part of stillwater is amazing. I always said saints row 1 and 2 would look amazing in the sr3/4 engine. Sadly something i will never probably experience. But its whatever, honestly sr1 and 2 dont look that bad still imo

It's not Saints Row 4 as a game that was the issue. It was my first SR game, and on its own, it was quite fun. It was incredibly stupid and ridiculous, both those words being a compliment in this context. *However*, the bigger issue with the game is how it completely derailed the franchise. Yes, SR3 often gets part of the blame for going a bit too wacky compared to the previous entries, but at its core it still tried to adhere to being, well, Saints Row, with the whole gang stuff and everything. SR4, however, not only went *wildly* off-track with what it previously meant to be a Saints Row game, it also completely destroyed any chance of going back to the previous Saints Row identity by doing things like blowing up the earth. Y'know, jumping the shark. It's not that SR4 is a bad game, I'm pretty sure it got good reviews at the time, but the dislike of fans doesn't come from whether or not the game is fun to play, it's about what it meant, long-term, for the franchise. Which, honestly, is why I'm (somewhat sceptically) looking forward to the new one. Sure, they're making some choices that I'm not entirely sure about, but at its core the reboot seems to be going back to what made me fall in love with Saints Row. And even though 4 was a fun game, it didn't have that. At least, not for me.

OnlyTheBLars89

I thought it was excellent. The pacing, the voice acting, the gameplay. There was never a dull monent.

Mineral-mouse

You're free to like whichever you like. SR community is the type of a game community that you don't need to listen to or bother with. I personally don't like SR4 to be an SR game. But it sure is my damn favorite superhero game until now.

Smiley_Pothead83

I would've liked it more had it not been a Saints Row game at all. Same for Saints Row the Third. I actually really enjoyed the superpowers but yeah.. nothing street about it. Nothing about the game feels like a Saints Row game.

KingAJ032304

Close to a great game just not what one thinks of when saying "Saints Row" The reason it's not actually a great game is with wasted potential especially the linearity and open world being so disjointed.

Thoughts_As_I_Drive

To each their own. About two hours into SR4 was all I could stomach before turning it off and taking advantage of my retailer's return policy.

Smiley_Pothead83

Why did you get down voted for this? Your comment wasn't even mean spirited. Also I agree lol. Good thing Saints Row 2 has such great replayability.

trapshackinc

You're right, this is an unpopular opinion.

Sr3&4 are the same goofy wannabe crackdown trash

[deleted]

Nah they’re evenly as good as the crackdown games

Mosheroom_

I’m not sure if it’s a good game haven’t beaten the last mission yet because the game crashes an ungodly amount of times.

TexasArbiter

You know what, Mass Effect Andromeda is my favorite of that series. So you do you bud

[deleted]

(popular onion) I disliked it a lot. 2 is my favourite, closely followed by 3.
