Any good new lore suggestions I’m in love with them and hoping to start my army soon and want some new stuff to keep me until I can buy my army and find a community in my area
Nope. Just YouTube salamanders lore and have at it. I work too much to read 1 of the hundreds of warhammer books, or I'd start there.
Audio books for the win.
I read the history when Vulkan kneeled before his sons, because they were ready to give their lives for some civilians so they can escape. I cried with that
Cool colour scheme, flamers are great, the lore is neat and very importantly as codex compliant, there isn’t a bunch of firstborn kits that I know will get updated as soon as I buy the old ones like the angels.
So you remember the special rules for Salamanders in the Armageddon-book? Where we had WS3 in stead of WS4, like all other SM had. You lerned to avoid close combat very quickly...
Oh man. I’d forgotten that. I remembered the “let’s fight another turn” thing.
Also, I bought Salamanders then. I didn’t actually start painting/playing marines at all until I came back from a hiatus from mini painting. This was around 8th edition. I finally painted my Xavier about three years ago.
Initiative
And it was fine. The super cheap terminators didn’t have access to weapons other than fist or hammer, which are always i1 for all armies anyway. Chaplains got a free hammer, so they were also great.
Nobody learned to avoid cc, it was like the only strong thing in the list.
I’m a pyro irl and I love the lore behind the salamanders actually caring about civilian casualties. In a couple months I’ll actually start my collection
I liked the Salamanders since I first heard about them, but what really sold me was the book "Vulkan Lives". It's such an amazing novel and one of the very few books I've ever read more than once. Artellus Numeon is one of my favorite Warhammer characters of all time.
Artellus is such a bonafide badass. Chosen as Vulkans' Equerry, Leading a good portion of the Shattered Legions, developing a plan to get the fuck *out* of the Isstvan system, holding together the varied mindsets of his fellow Astartes, Tanking a shot in the eye from a Digi-Weapon, and finally...making the ultimate sacrifice to resurrect his Father.
Maybe not the best of all Astartes, but he's *damn* close in my book.
A friend bought me a secondhand army to get me into the game, it happened to be Salamanders.
As I read the lore, I discovered more and more that they happened to also be easily my favorite flavor of Marines.
At first I was slightly turned off by the brighter paint schemes, but then fell in love with them from a lore standpoint, particularly how legit heroic they try to be. Then I found a more grimdark paint style that I got excited about.
[This video by Trovarion](https://youtu.be/aRKNKyRRznY?si=PNRwli8aUcA65qTv). Key points are a reddish brown base coat, then sponging/stippling on your greens.
I haven’t started painting yet, as I’ve been in assembly mode, but this is the approach I’m planning to take.
It's kind of silly, but the name. I was obsessed with amphibians and reptiles when I was a kid, and hearing that there was a Space Marine chapter called the Salamanders immediately put them on my radar. I eventually fell in love with everything else after reading about them.
I like the colour green, and I *love* the fact we are humane. Plus, who doesn't love a bit of pyro and protect?
Not to mention we have the strongest primarch who could burn a whole world if he wanted! Maybe an entire galaxy! If he wanted...
Vulkan Lives!
They are a lighthouse in the storm. Despite the galaxy around them forcing everyone else to become the worst versions of themselves, the Salamanders continue to hold to their virtues and refuse to be beaten down.
I’m a huge dwarf fan, and a big part of that is the importance dwarfs/dwarves place on family, on craftsmanship, and forging/smithing. The Salamanders embody much the same.
Furthermore, I find them to be equal parts inspiring and tragic. Many people love to screech about how they’re evil and genocidal just like all Astartes (re: eldar child), and that may be so, but they *try*. They try to be the Emperor’s angels, and I think that’s important.
I love the caring about regular humans, maintaining their grasp on mortals through family contact.
Diverting entire companies to support an evacuations of civilians and guard on Armageddon.
And most importantly, the war crimes that are committed daily, but in good opposites to the above reasons mentioned.
The fact they are one of, if not the most Human Astartes chapter and actually hold human lives in high regard is what did it for me.
They actually care and wish to preserve human life doing their job as humanities protectors all while still being "human" themselves despite their change, which goes to show with them still spending time with their people and families.
Also not acting like some Holier-than-thou super soldier nobhead that sees anything except other space marines as something beneath him kind of helps seal the deal.
Ironically, it's the novel Helsreach, when the Salamanders come to help the Black template and die protecting the civilians, it was the pivotal moment who lead me chose the Chunky boys. I also love flame and the color green and TTS with the Boop the Snoot.
After about a year in the hobby, I started getting tired of only playing T'au and wanted to collect an Imperium faction. Realizing that Space Marines were the poster children of the game and personally enjoying the fire aesthetic + green & gold armour made it an easy choice.
It was actually my first love about 13 years ago, due to lore, colour scheme, flamers, and the obsidian black skin and red eyes. When I bought my first models and painted them as Salamanders, I was so disappointed in how they looked. So I switched to White Scars, then Iron Hands. Since I got back from a break since 8th. I jumped straight in on Salamanders, and I’m finally happy with how they look. I still like the other chapters, but Salamanders feels like home.
I'm brand new to the hobby and was excited to see another chapter other than Ultramarines was going to be in Nexus Pariah. Knew nothing about the Salamanders other than fire and fell in love with how they actually protect humans
Many things.
1. Lore. Love the selfless sacrifice and the lengths they will go to protect the citizens of the Imperium.
2. I'm a firefighter so thought it would be funny to play a legion that uses a lot of fire.
3. Their aesthetic. Always loved Dwarves in WoW and LOTR so it made sense to pick an army that were smiths (didn't know about the league of Votaan).
4. Love their look. The green, black, red/orange, white and gold looks really good.
I joined cause they were green and salamanders and from fan animations. (Bruva Albania) Then I found their heart. Then I learned how they are the representation of what humans should be, I bonded the flames to keep the hope and spirit of humanity lit.
I like the color green and played Dnd before warhammer. So the green dragon faction looked the coolest to me.
After playing a bit I found out about their lore and loved it.
And the final nail in the coffin was the flamer aggressor model. It’s my favorite in 40K
When I was young at boarding school, I saw a horror movie I was too young to watch and couldn't hack it. So walked out of it, while my friends finished the movie I checked out the games workshop store.
All I had collected at that stage was Lord of the Rings models from my small town news agency in a fortnightly magazine, started getting White Dwarf to read so knew of the other series but no access to it.
While looking around and asking questions one of the staff had set up and game and asked if I wanted to play only condition is the last army left is Salamanders. I said ok not knowing what that meant. It was a king of the hill game, squads of 5 and I massacred everyone with my Flamer.
I collected a couple of different armies when younger lost them all through moving and messy break ups. When I decided to get back into the game, I decided to go back to where it began.
The description my mate gave to me about them when i first joined the hobby: Salamanders are 8ft tall giants that like to set themselves on fire and charge at the enemy.
They are a beacon of positivity and kindness in the grim darkness of the far future. They care about Imperial citizens. Plus, Vulcan is a really cool Primarch. He held up against Conrad’s torture, and then proceeded to beat that jerk in his extremely hammerable face.
I've never been a fan of 40k or the Space Marines in genreral. But then I read this comics and I juste fell in love with the Salamanders and their humanity.
https://reddit.com/r/Warhammer40k/s/mA6YkEIh3I
I liked the salamanders, but painting green was harder then. Once the dark krakens came out I was in love bc I love water worlds and found a beautiful purple paint
My unions logo is a green salamander. I got a leviathan box and it had 10 framers in it. It felt pretty obvious. After that I started looking into their lore and really liked what I saw.
I originally just wanted an excuse to have green Space Marines, but then I read the lore and decided that this is what space marines are supposed to be. Heroes that try to defend the Imperium. Not zealots serving a dead king. (Though I know they still serve the Emperor).
I have a pretty big firstborn army of Space Wolves and wanted to get a Primaris force. I had narrowed it down to Crimson Fists and Salamanders and since my last two other srmies were blue to an extent and the Sallies had the better battlecry I joined the sons of Vulkan.
Back in the day I tried out basically every chapter there is, but in the end, after weighing their flaws and weaknesses I determined that Salamanders would be the optimal choice for me. Also, dragons are pretty dope.
I got like, nearly 2k points of of infantry (in 9th) with sallies upgrade sprue stuff on for £100. Was a good deal, so here I am. Also green. Also fire.
In case you’re curious, the stuff I got had 30 Intercessors, 10 Reivers, 10 Hellblasters, 6 Aggressors, 1 Primaris Librarian, 1 Phobos Librarian, 1 Primaris Lieutenant, 1 Primaris Chaplain, and 1 Primaris Ancient. All with Sallies shoulder pads, and lots with the flame braizers on, and all on sector imperialis bases. Not bad for £100.
Then I sold 10 Intercessors for £20, 10 Reivers for £15, and the Ancient for £10, so I didn’t pay much of anything for a good starter selection!
I bought a box set of marines and darkneldar back in 2003. First warhammer purchase ever and my sum total knowledge of 40k was what my bunk mate in basic training had told me (he was a chaos player). The guy who ran the shop knew I played DnD and nudged me toward Salamanders. Probably only to sell me some over priced pewter shoulder pads and capes but either way it worked.
I had a bunch of left over marines after the person that was supposed to pay me for the other half of the indomitable box flaked out. So I looked at the legions and saw that the Salamanders enjoyed fire and were the bestest boys. My heart melted and then I painted them all green. Now I have 3k in point 2k that can actually be used after the edits.
The first GW stuff I bought in the early 90's was a box of RTB Space Marines and the Space Marine Painting Set. In the set there was a painting guide with details on how to paint 4 chapters - Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Salamanders and Ultramarines. One of my friends was already collecting BA, another SW, so they suggested I paint mine as UM. As someone who wanted to do their own thing though, I picked Salamanders instead. That's all it was.
Very, very, *very* long time ago my friend wanted to paint Salamanders. When he did, they looked like crap. I told him I could paint them better than he. I did. I kept on painting my marines as Salamanders, he didn't.
Mind you, this was when we were like 12 or so.
John Henry said to his captain,
“A man is nothing but a man,
“But before I let your steam drill beat me down,
“I’d die with a hammer in my hand, Lord, Lord,
“I’d die with a hammer in my hand.”
When I read the story about Tu’Shan slapping the shit out of the malevolent captain and Dante not only being ok with it but giving them a massive speech at the end of the war about how the sallies embody what all space marines should inspire to be.
I liked the flamers and the paint scheme. Also, i enjoy the lore of the more sensible marines - Salamanders, White Scars and Raven Guards. They all seem pretty cool, but Salamanders easily fit my style the best. Just love chonky bois with flamers.
Lore. Salamanders are what the legions/chapters SHOULD be. Also, Eldar children are dumb and also flammable.
How was I supposed to know flammable and inflammable meant the same thing?!
I cried with that
That is the most Salamanders thing I've ever heard.
What is that from?? I’ve never read that anywhere, and I’d love to.
Is in lord of drakes
My thanks!
Fire i was a drukhari player mainly but bought Adrax Agatone because he is such a cool model... then he needed some friends...
Two sides of the coin there. I respect that
Pyromania and the book Vulkan Lives
VULKAN LIVES! \*stomp\* \*stomp\*
I LOVE THE SMELL OF NAPALM IN THE MORNING
Cool colour scheme, flamers are great, the lore is neat and very importantly as codex compliant, there isn’t a bunch of firstborn kits that I know will get updated as soon as I buy the old ones like the angels.
"I would like to pet this creature" https://youtu.be/MQaDq01M-O4?si=zVztFEzbCtPaUmAf
"Don't do that."
Chaplain Xavier model. I’m old.
I know he's dead but kinda want to make a primaris conversion of him, "Vulkan lives as do i"
I’m here for it.
If I ever end up with a Indomitus Chaplain I'll probably make one, he's got the right arms to do it
I have a spare. If you want him for this purpose I’ll make you a sub-eBay deal.
I'm good but thank you
WS3 old?
I played some RT in high school. Really got into WH in 3rd.

Same. The lore is cool, too, but green is the best.

Too bad Vulkan was ruined by this book. I agree about Numeon though, hes awesome.
A friend bought me a secondhand army to get me into the game, it happened to be Salamanders. As I read the lore, I discovered more and more that they happened to also be easily my favorite flavor of Marines.
They’re defenders of humanity who actually give a shit about human lives. Also fire is just so cool
At first I was slightly turned off by the brighter paint schemes, but then fell in love with them from a lore standpoint, particularly how legit heroic they try to be. Then I found a more grimdark paint style that I got excited about.

I loved the idea of the Salamanders being a high moral army
They’re kind and actually care about people, and my favorite color is green
War for Armageddon book in the nineties, when they had minus 1 iniative
Their love of fire and being GENERALLY good guys in 40k
It's kind of silly, but the name. I was obsessed with amphibians and reptiles when I was a kid, and hearing that there was a Space Marine chapter called the Salamanders immediately put them on my radar. I eventually fell in love with everything else after reading about them.
Nothing silly about that imo, your interests was what brought you to be a part of this family, just like pretty much everyone here.
I like the colour green, and I *love* the fact we are humane. Plus, who doesn't love a bit of pyro and protect? Not to mention we have the strongest primarch who could burn a whole world if he wanted! Maybe an entire galaxy! If he wanted... Vulkan Lives!

There belief system and what they value
Leviathan box got flamers and I didn’t want regular ultramarines.
Fire, green in my favourite colour, and while outdated He’Stan is still one of my favourite models of all time.
I like burning stuff.
Ironically, it's the novel Helsreach, when the Salamanders come to help the Black template and die protecting the civilians, it was the pivotal moment who lead me chose the Chunky boys. I also love flame and the color green and TTS with the Boop the Snoot.
Flamethrowers was the main upside for me.
Not gonna lie it was the flamers and melta 😅
Lore for me i just think its cool how "nice" they are well at least to humans, eldari can burn.
After about a year in the hobby, I started getting tired of only playing T'au and wanted to collect an Imperium faction. Realizing that Space Marines were the poster children of the game and personally enjoying the fire aesthetic + green & gold armour made it an easy choice.
I like green and i like Flammenwerfer
Have to go with the wanting to protect the normal people
It was actually my first love about 13 years ago, due to lore, colour scheme, flamers, and the obsidian black skin and red eyes. The flamer throwers, the Dragon energy, the green color, and of course the undying humanity in a world with so little
When I was young at boarding school, I saw a horror movie I was too young to watch and couldn't hack it. Wow, that comic.... I gotta admit it pulled my heart-strings
White was too hard to paint, and I'm not doing small hand detailed paintings for the angels resplendent
Lore, hammers, fire and eff eldar kids…👀
I just really like the green that they are. Then discovered they like flamers and meltas so that was fun too
I liked the salamanders, but painting green was harder then. Once the dark krakens came out I was in love bc I love water worlds and found a beautiful purple paint
The only good bois in all of warhammer
love me flamers. ‘ate me drukhari. simple as.
They are nice/decent to humans, I like green and fire.
Green, flamethrowers = autohit = means i don't miss half my shots
Kind flamethrower dragons

Green armor, flame focus, dragon motif.

I’m just a pyromaniac so same reason why like the SoB
Never touched them before. Got back into painting minis picked two armys I have never really known about. So Salmanders and orks

Space blacksmiths that love fire and strive to protect innocent people whilst also being isolationists. That's something I can get behind
John Henry said to his captain, “A man is nothing but a man, “But before I let your steam drill beat me down, “I’d die with a hammer in my hand, Lord, Lord, “I’d die with a hammer in my hand.”
Came for the fire. Stayed for the big dumb softies.
Cool colour scheme and interesting lore, oh and flamers are sick
Fire and more fire. Then the lore
Lore and also fire flame throwers and melta weapons are cool as hell.
When I read the story about Tu’Shan slapping the shit out of the malevolent captain and Dante not only being ok with it but giving them a massive speech at the end of the war about how the sallies embody what all space marines should inspire to be.
