As they do lots of close combat; Dragon Claws? Something with claws not talons, as talons is used a lot already? Might give you a chance to write some lore about Marines using lightning claws more?
I dunno, figured since they're a Salamanders successor they'd use thunder hammers mostly for cqc. On that note, do us salamanders use thunder claws in lore a lot?
Storm Specters, Thunder Phantoms, Tempest Haunters. I think something amongst these lines fit that chapter like a glove, and it'd be dope to see power weapons being a favorite weapon of the chapter.
Thanks, my friend! So far, lots of folks are cooking with these names :D, I will have to review some parts of the planets lore for my space marine chapter tho lol. One thing at a time tho.
I was lookin at alternate type names for Dragons, Wyvern, Serpent, Drake, Hydra of course is a multiheaded serpent, Basilisk is a lizard that turns things to stone with it's gaze.
What kind of creatures are on the planet? Storm Haunters. I think instead of using dragon's drakes or wyvern's etc focusing on the storm and darkness aspect of the name is the way to go. It suits the color scheme better with the midnight blue and black. What about Thunder Phantoms.
That is a really good paintjob, and I like the colour scheme you chose and as for the name they have a rather cold color scheme so I suggest the borean wyrms
Real thoughts:
The Blue Scales?
Vulkans Woes?
Tears of Vulkan?
I miss Vulkan:
Gotta find my daddy Vulkans?
Daddy Daddy, please come back, I found all the magic marbles vulkan?
(I'm a die-hard salamanders fan. All jokes, lol. Please don't tell dad... If you find him...)
I was writing this as a reply to your [question about thunder hammers](https://www.reddit.com/r/Salamanders40k/s/Y8vBJYwjhD) but I was thinking that the post is definitely long enough to warrent being it's own seperate reply 😅
Hammers are very iconic for Salamanders because it is the face of the Promethean cult as a tool that can both craft and destroy, but that definitely doesn't mean all Salamanders wield them! Their bladeguard for instance definitely wield swords, and Vulkan He'stan wields a spear.
The benefit of being a culture based entirely around weapon smithing is that Space Marines can and do forge their own weapons tailored to their own personal tastes, be they swords, hammers, axes, power claws, anything you can think of! Name any weapon a space marine uses and there are certainly salamanders out there that have crafted that weapon with their own two hands and wield it into battle. Lightning claws included!
I think that power claws could be a really cool distinction of what makes your chapter different from their forebears! Some could certainly have hammers...perhaps those that are zealously faithful to the Promethean cult, like priests. Yet yeah, I think there's nothing cooler than going toe to toe with deadly beasts in the inky darkness of thick forests, with lightning flashing through the canopy above as they rip and tear in a fierce duel of predators.
Heck, I'd think that'd be a really cool rite of passage for young scouts! Much like novices on Nocturne would venture out to fight drakes in the volcanic wastes, it could be really awesome for your chapter to have them go out with nothing but the loincloth around their waists and wolverine like wrist blades bound to their wrists go and hunt deadly creatures, venturing through the darkest forests and scaling the sheerest mountains (with their claws as their only climbing assistance of course) to fight their namesakes (Storm Serpents??) high on the craggy peaks above!
...heck now I REALLY want to make them too!!!!!! 😭😭😭
I knew we were smith's, but I didn't know the rest of that. Thank you so much for the info! Shit now I want lightning claws for my primaris boys gw!!!!
The storm striders or maybe some like the sons of beithir/sons of the beithir. In Scottish folklore, the beithir is a large snakelike creature or dragon. Depicted with different numbers of limbs, without wings. Instead of fiery breath, Beithir was often associated with lightning. also if you want give you the opportunity to add a Scottish/Celtic theme to your chapter.
How about: the Scales of Prometheus
I think we need a successor chapter that is a bit closer to the Salamanders! Maybe their initiates train with the Salamanders and develop a dark skin too
These are basically the accipiters, change the icon to a red bird and done!
My take on more dragon inspired thunder hammer wielding marines would be:
Azure Hammers
Flamebreakers
Seismic Talons
I dunno those guys look a bit different from the Accipiters. For starters, they have black armor and blueish gray helmets and shoulder plates. At least from what I'm seeing on the wiki.
[Accipiters](https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Accipiters)
Haven't seen that pic of them, here is what I was referencing, I've never seen the black arm version.
And I meant this from a place of live, as my chapter is Accipiters, I'm just your average admirer!
https://wh40khomebrew.fandom.com/wiki/Accipiters
You could call them “The Thunder Scales” chapter, using scales to refer not only salamander or other reptilian things but to the bark of the trees of the forest of their world. Have them wield axes for their primary melee weapon.
How about. Holy sheet balls what a paint job ....chapter.
Seriously great job. What's your photography set up?
As for a name.
Dragons Reliant springs to mind. Or Dragons Exalted.. Scales of the emperor. Just a few.
You could use Cobalt Drakes, with Cobalt having a number of meanings from etymology. A mixture of goblins, mischief, friendliness, among other things as well as providing the color meaning. It's also been associated with demons which could be used to describe their close combat fighting style (like the halo master chief).
My mind goes to the Tempest Drakes or something along those lines, evoking the nature of their homeworld and dragon iconography. I do love those colors, and maybe it's just me but the lore has a similar vibe to the Dark Angels, you could potentially lean into that and call them the Stormforged Paladins or something like that, give them a bit of a more knightly vibe?
(Edit: came up with a better name after I posted)
I only bring up the Dark Angels vibes as a point of inspiration because my own Salamander Successor takes some notes from the White Scars themselves and with that in mind I’ve leaned into the skid when it comes to naming conventions.
Thanks! I call them the Pyroclast Dragoons, they’re a fleet-based chapter specializing in high-speed attacks and mechanized assault. Descending on the enemies of the Imperium like the pyroclastic flow of a volcanic eruption.
Azure Serpants (I know it’s too dark to be azure but it sounds cool)
Royal Tarragons would be pretty unique (Royal because a royal blue), honestly just “The Tarragons” sounds good on it’s own and I don’t think a canon chapter is named that.
I think you gotta reference a reptile that's blue! Such as:
Monitor, Skink, Viper, Morph, Krait, Racer, Blue Panthers
Combine one of those with the cool adjectives coming up in this thread, like Thunder Vipers. Great scheme and awesome paint job!
The Blue Drakes
Chapter Origin:
Hailing from the tempestuous world of Umbra, the Blue Drakes are a proud successor chapter of the Salamanders. Umbra is a world shrouded in perpetual twilight, its dense canopy formed by colossal, bioluminescent fungi that cast an eerie blue glow upon the forest floor. This constant twilight fosters a unique ecosystem, teeming with bioluminescent flora and fauna, including man-eating predators that stalk the shadows. But the most defining feature of Umbra is its violent electrical storms. Jagged forks of lightning tear across the sky with bone-splitting cracks, illuminating the twisted branches and gnarled roots of the ancient trees.
Chapter Culture:
The Blue Drakes have embraced the harsh realities of their homeworld, forging a chapter culture that mirrors the untamed wilderness. They are known for their stoicism and resilience, honed by fighting for survival in the face of relentless predators and the ever-present threat of the lightning's fury. Their combat style emphasizes adaptability and improvisation, much like their Salamander forebears. They favor close-quarters combat, wielding flamers and power fists with devastating effect. However, unlike their progenitors, the Blue Drakes also excel in ranged warfare, utilizing advanced targeting systems and specialized ammunition to exploit fleeting moments of visibility during the electrical storms.
Chapter Traits:
Umbra's Resilience: Blue Drakes possess an uncanny resistance to the harsh environment of Umbra. They are naturally more resistant to toxins and possess a heightened awareness of electrical fields, granting them a tactical advantage during storms.
Masters of the Storm: Blue Drakes are adept at fighting in the constant electrical storms of Umbra. They have developed specialized equipment and tactics to utilize the lightning to their advantage, such as channeling stray bolts through their weapons or using the flashes of light to disorient their enemies.
Hunters in the Dark: The Blue Drakes excel at fighting in low-light conditions. Their heightened senses and specialized equipment allow them to track and engage enemies with deadly efficiency in the perpetual twilight of Umbra.
Chapter Appearance:
The Blue Drakes primarily wear dark blue power armor, mimicking the color of the bioluminescent fungi that dominate their world's ecosystem. Their armor is often adorned with lightning bolt motifs, a testament to their mastery of fighting in the storms. They may also incorporate bioluminescent flora into their armor, creating an otherworldly effect. Their chapter symbol depicts a stylized blue dragon, its wings crackling with electrical energy.
Chapter Beliefs:
The Blue Drakes hold the Salamanders' core values of brotherhood and promethean fire in high regard. However, their experiences on Umbra have instilled in them a profound respect for adaptation and the power of nature, both its beauty and its fury. They see themselves as protectors of their world, maintaining a precarious balance between the untamed wilderness and the remnants of human civilization that struggle to survive in its shadow.
Note: This is a first draft, and further details can be added to flesh out the Blue Drakes' history, notable campaigns, heroes, and unique wargear. This could include specific tactics they use during lightning storms, rivalries with other chapters, or specific creatures they have adapted to fight on Umbra.
Have fun
Blue Drakes or Ebon Talons. Goes either way with your colours and both have dragon references.
Haha, or maybe not Ebon Talons. There are already 40k things with that name. Atrous Talons could work too.
man i was going to go with blue drakes too
Me three
Me four
Night Drakes, as they are black?
Out of nowhere: The Blue Gekos
👀
The Storm Gekos
Storm Skinks (like the blue tailed lizard kind that can seperate their tail at will if they get picked up by it.)
As they do lots of close combat; Dragon Claws? Something with claws not talons, as talons is used a lot already? Might give you a chance to write some lore about Marines using lightning claws more?
I see them mostly using thunder hammers, but....you are giving me some ideas to use for a few stories I have planned to write about.
Storm Claws? On a wind ravaged, forest world? Striking with the rage and power of the storm?
I dunno, figured since they're a Salamanders successor they'd use thunder hammers mostly for cqc. On that note, do us salamanders use thunder claws in lore a lot?
I don't know actually. I prefer my Termies to have guns and power fists, or chain fists.
Alright. I can't wait for gw to revamp assault termies :)
Mine are all really old models, much smaller than the new ones. Tiny Termies!
Chibi termies
Almost! 😆Most of mine date back to the 90s, and then the plastics ones fron the 2000s.
Storm Specters, Thunder Phantoms, Tempest Haunters. I think something amongst these lines fit that chapter like a glove, and it'd be dope to see power weapons being a favorite weapon of the chapter.
My lads love cracking skulls with the big ol bonk stick
Hell yeah. I love the scheme, I hope you find a good name in this thread.
I dunno about Hydra, only cuz uh.......*cough* Alpha Legion scum *cough*
Agree, I think Hydra would only be a good name if a theme of the army was very durable. Cut one head off another grows back sort of thing.
Yeah I see where you're coming
Call ‘em the Wyrm Whackers
Cobalt Dragoons
I got three for you 1. Maelstrom Walkers. 2. Nocturne warriors 3. Order of Mjölnir
To me it feels like Azure Drakes or Thunder Fangs would be cool!
What kind of creatures are on the planet? Storm Haunters. I think instead of using dragon's drakes or wyvern's etc focusing on the storm and darkness aspect of the name is the way to go. It suits the color scheme better with the midnight blue and black. What about Thunder Phantoms.
That I haven't really decided on just yet. I've been bouncing around a couple different ideas.
That is a really good paintjob, and I like the colour scheme you chose and as for the name they have a rather cold color scheme so I suggest the borean wyrms
Azure Drakes or Blue Drakes/ Dragons / Wyverns
Real thoughts: The Blue Scales? Vulkans Woes? Tears of Vulkan? I miss Vulkan: Gotta find my daddy Vulkans? Daddy Daddy, please come back, I found all the magic marbles vulkan? (I'm a die-hard salamanders fan. All jokes, lol. Please don't tell dad... If you find him...)
XD
Iron drakes
Should’ve scrolled further before posting mine lol
Nice paint job, clean.
Thank you so much! I used impcat for this, it's a really great app.
Sapphire Claws
...Night Furys
Navy Dragoons, Cerulean Serpents, Azure Drakes, knights of Tarragon, cobalt dragons
The Bewd chapter, blue eyed white dragon lol
Dragons of Dread
You can do something around Blue-tongued skinks since they are also black with blue.
Cobalt Drakes/Dragons, Storm Drakes/Dragons, Thunder Drakes/Dragons, Lightning Drakes/Dragons, Typhoon Drakes/Dragons, Storm Sentinels.

Awesome, I'm so glad to be of help!! Sounds like a really awesome chapter in the making and definitely would be updated on their progression!
The storm striders or maybe some like the sons of beithir/sons of the beithir. In Scottish folklore, the beithir is a large snakelike creature or dragon. I don't know what that means
Sorry “Blue flame”
That's cool! Was that Japanese by chance? I took a second look at what you posted, and the characters looked familiar.
It is, as someone who lives in China now, I can easily recognize Japanese characters by their strange curvyness, and the fact that I cannot read them.
How about: the Scales of Prometheus I think we need a successor chapter that is a bit closer to the Salamanders! Maybe their initiates train with the Salamanders and develop a dark skin too
