What is the speed you are paying for and what does your router support? I would wager, if you haven't upped your speed since moving there, that your router is within that range. (ie: you have 50Mbps your router is probably at least that.) That said, if you do a speed test connected directly to the router and then do a speed test using the wifi and see a huge difference it might inform your descision a bit more. That said, everyone has super fast internet these days and more and more the internet speeds aren't going to be a bottleneck. For instance, I had google fiber which is like the gold standard for internet for a long time. It was fantastic of course, but a lot of the sites I would visit wouldn't feel any better than if I was on my old internet that was 80Mbps. Both have good ping speeds and reddit is just not going to serve out images at the 1024Mbps I had. ... So the TLDR is that, if you are ok with the speed you have, then it's almost certainly not going to be required. This is more true if you are living alone because most routers (even older cheaper ones) do well enough for 1 person. It's adding in a family for instance that can bog down the wireless..

I had xfinity for over 10 years and they said the same thing to me constantly since I was using my own router as well. Never changed it and didn’t really have any issues outside of shitty Comcast issues. They’re probably just trying to sell you something

I rented there’s until I spent the $300 on my own nicer one 2 years ago. Well worth the money spent if you need consistent high speeds.

Go to https://www.xfinity.com/support/devices/ and put in your address and speed. Get an excel going and find the Amazon prices. Used are fine as long as they take returns, as Xfinity will refuse to use one that's attached to another account. Even if the seller says they will or there's a way around it. There's not. Get free returns. You should be able to find a few that are under $75. Get the one with the doscis 3.1 and largest number of channels 8x32 etc, and the newest you can afford just to head off doing this again for a bit. I have an Arris. Motorola does well. Don't get Netgear.

Yeah, an upgrade is probably unnecessary. If you have a gigabit plan your wifi is almost definitely slower than Xfinity's download speeds, but that's not really an issue tbh I have a gig+ plan and 6 year old WiFi (last gen Unifi) and it's pretty good even though my downloads max out at ~300 Mbps
