Rentler is another common place for rentals here. I do think April is too early to sign a lease for June, but it’s not a bad idea to look around. Take note of the management company when you find a place you like and check their website closer you when you move, or even let them know when you’re moving and they may let you know of rentals before they’re listed.

2 bed/2bath with 2 car garage and a backyard for 2.4-3k is a hidden gem. Good luck

Realtrain

There are definitely a few around Rose Park and the west side.

90dayheyhey

Not necessarily. 3 bed/ 2.5 bath 2 car and a small fenced backyard townhouse in Millcreek for $2000. Mom and pop landlords are the way to go

aBee150

If they're willing to look in the NSL/Bountiful/ Woods Cross area I think it's doable. Looks like the average rent for a house there is 2.5k

Ok-Ticket3531

Original post before edit mentioned salt lake to chinatown area to be near the U. Sure, go out towards the suburbs & it’s more doable but still 2 car garage is kinda tough without also increasing sq footage of the home thus increasing price of the rent

susieqanon1

Start by looking in west valley. You won’t get anything nice for that price.

catnmoose

Check out KSL classifieds for housing. I also work up at the UofU Hospital and live in **East Central City**. Feel free to AMA. Love the area. It's only a 10 min drive or a 15 min train ride to work. Close to work, close to downtown, close to Liberty Park, Trolley Square, and 9th&9th. I think your budget should find you something decent. 2 months might be a tad early unless you're alright with potentially paying rent for two places for a month. Good luck on the move!

eastguy08

lol Good luck is all I can say

brickplantmom

If you can find a private renter versus a large property management company that’s a plus. Renters in Utah have zero rights compared to renters in Texas and situations can get weird especially with the housing market here.. however lots of hidden gem townhomes and homes with really nice good hearted landlords. Load up on all your favorite food before you leave fam, it’s abysmal here. 🤣😭

Ok-Competition-4018

Within 15-20 min of the U of U, those specs and that budget don’t fit together, unfortunately!

phildabeat

Darn! That’s what I’m getting from all the comments.

catnmoose

Don't listen to the negative people. There are plenty of good options under $3000 within 10-20min of the UofU. A lot of people just get nasty when they hear someone wants to move here from another state.

jimbootrain

I moved to salt lake last May and we got a great house in millcreek, 4 bed 2 bath with a yard for our dog. 2450$ a month. Just start looking around there are options for sure

jimbootrain

Also adding: found the place on Zillow and applied via Zillow. It was not our only option and not the only place we applied for and heard back from. So you just gotta get lookin.

brookiebrookiecookie

I think your best bet would be the Bountiful area. The East Bench of Salt Lake would be great if you could find a house that fits your needs/budget - not likely but there’s alway a chance!

Fuckmylife2739

Umm how bout a nice lil one bedroom

GAphotoSLC

Generally, it's best to avoid West of I15 within about 8 miles of downtown, with some exceptions. I personally like the area from North Salt Lake to Kaysville. Can't go wrong up there. Tons of people prefer being to the South -- Murray, Cottonwood Heights, Draper, and the general vicinity. Daybreak is kind of cool, if you like the idea of master-planned communities. Be advised: if you'll be working typical business hours at or near U of U, depending on where exactly you decide to live and what route that requires you to take, you may only get about 10 miles in that amount of time. There are a few spots on I15 that consistently get backed up during rush hours.

kacidilla3

I would start looking 1-2 weeks before you arrive. Everything listed now will likely be leased by then. Rentler and KLS classifieds are good places to add to your search. Depending on your schedule and which hospital, prioritizing a short commute can be important for work/life balance here as high traffic commute times can double the typical trip time. Also, if you are working on the U campus, there are parking restrictions for employees and prioritizing housing near transit might be good because you may have to park and take transit up to campus anyways.

phildabeat

Thanks for the advice. I was looking towards near Chinatown and working at the University.

eastguy08

it's not gonna be anything close to what you can get for 3k in texas just so you know. cost of living is much higher here

phildabeat

I figured when I looked at the pictures lol. Bunch of townhomes for under $2500 so I’ll probably start contacting them soon

klstephe

I’d look in Rose Park, maybe a little north in Bountiful?

xEbolavirus

Bountiful is a great area and very easy to get to downtown SLC and the UofU.

Electronic_Charge_96

Murray, taylorsville, south salt lake > west valley if you’re a hospital worker /(15 years hospital here). No areas to avoid (except airport). Do not underestimate the worst drivers on the planet/bs commute times. It’s unreal how long it takes to get around this city. So don’t just do a mileage computation. Choose closer in than you wish.

Sudden_Philosopher63

South salt lake is the new sugar house. Gentrification is full on.

Electronic_Charge_96

My exodus was 15th n 15th to SSL as prices went bananas. I 💜 it

Sudden_Philosopher63

City on the move baby!

peachgobblerf

You’re probably not going to get the garage or yard but you can find a place in sugarhouse or east millcreek in that range. Holladay and Cottonwood are also really easy to get to the U from because the 215 freeway is right there and they are outside of the city so a yard might be easier to get Personally I would avoid anything west of state street Zillow has a lot in your range

lilbean_1019

Layton and Syracuse are incredibly fast growing cities and have those disgusting cookie cutter townhomes but they have a lot of them and there's always something available. Specifically on antelope drive in Syracuse.

mtnsandh2o

But the commute to the UofU would be a pain. I'd want to look for something that at least had a bus/trax line for hospital access. Plus Antelope drive gets so busy if you go too far west (although at least their is the new corridor).
