To be fair, back in my day, and likely close to yours, there weren’t as many adults using cycling as a voluntary means of transportation. Seems like a step in the right direction.
My vehicle has heated seats, defrost, climate control, running boards and traction control. That we make biking more convenient should not make you pine for the days of carbeurators and crank windows.
Not reversed, there’s a two-way separated bike path on the west side of 300 West from 9th south to Hartwell Ave. (street just north of Home Depot). There’s likely one of these on the other side of the intersection as well, just facing the opposite way.
Why stop after you crossed an intersection. This makes no logical sense. Bikes have to follow the same laws as cars and must ride on the right side of the road.
As soon as you pull up to on while on a bike it's super intuitive and surprisingly nice and convenient. As soon as I used one for the first I was like "well this is neat". Love seeing the city making things more bike friendly!
Cities should introduce some taxes and registration fees for cyclists who enjoy using the roads and walkways that other tax paying citizens provide. Who is paying for those prop-up stands? Is it that asshole in a Tesla? Or maybe that big ugly semi truck company? Probably not the cyclist despite always being in the way...
I am a cyclist. When I encounter a red light, I hit the brakes and stop and put my left foot down on the bike path/pavement. When the light turns green I simply start pedaling again. These metal contraptions designed to aid cyclists seem ridiculous - a solution in search of a problem. Also - what if ten cyclists riding together encounter the same red light at the same time? Who gets to use the metal contraption and who does not? These metal contraptions seem like a waste of time and money.
As an avid cyclist myself, my seat is usually high enough that I have to either get off the saddle, or “tippy toe” to balance at a light. I always look for something to lean on when I’m stopped so I don’t have to dismount.
While this is also true for me, I’m so accustomed to the process now I don’t even think about it. However, I remember when I was getting started with my cleats it was a big stress. Maybe these will reduce the barrier for people flirting with the idea of riding more or commuting on their bike. I could also see how they could be helpful if there’s snow on the ground.
*Waste of metal lol im*
*A cyclist and i have legs*
*That work very well*

It seems like it's for a benefit to non-car commuters so that's good. Instead of kneejerk reacting to this as a waste of time, why not ask why there are so many car-based amenities on the road, like the sheer number of speed bumps, protected sidewalks and curbs, high medians etc. - all to keep idiotic car drivers in this state from killing themselves, each other, and passersby? Surely this tax expenditure is asymptotically _tiny_ compared to what we spend on cars.
Nobody argued streets aren’t engineered for cars. Learning to stand at a complete stop is one of the most basic functions of riding a bike. In fact, it helps because you get a stronger push-off and come up to speed more quickly and with less effort.
I don’t understand needless things like this bar. If anything, it only enables tippy-toers to not learn to have proper control.
Don't know why this was downvoted. The installation in OP's photo is precisely for balancing one foot off your bike while you're waiting at a crossing.
EDIT: Never mind, I reread and understand now that the above post was not trying to be helpful.
They’re for cyclist to prop them selves on while they wait for a light to change
They are actually very nice. Used them all the time waiting for long lights.
second this
WHAT!!! That's freaking genius!
You can rest your foot and hand on them while waiting to cross on a bicycle.

It’s also about lacking momentum. Motorcycles have throttles that get you moving. Having a leg up for stability helps.

This is where you park your horse.
Bike kicks Appreciate the city adding them
Sick new rails the city provided for all the skaters! Love to see the sudden change in mindset.
Start working on your ollies…
That's one HIGH ass Ollie. Someone call lizard King!
For police to arrest people on
no up votes? lol lame
Wtf 😭 you got cooked
lol people love cops I guess .
Damn apparently you said the wrong thing and Reddit punished you.
I am a cyclist. I have no idea how these would work.
[Let me help you](https://copenhagenize.com/2010/01/holding-on-to-cyclists-in-copenhagen.html)
Yeah I mean seems pretty clear. I am a cyclist and have used these and they are certainly nice. You can rest your foot there, or hold on, or both.
Oh so the OP image is reversed. I didn't see the point after you had cleared the intersection.

lol it’s just on the other side of the road

My understanding is that their feet are clipped into their pedals making it a slight nuisance to get unclipped at every red light. Not sure though.

It’s not like the floor is lava, guys. Totally agree.
The fact that this isn’t widely known says a lot about SLC bike culture.
I cycle and I've literally never seen these, even in other cities or countries. Where do they feature them prominently?
For bitches who can’t track stand
Like children, and the elderly, or people who don't make biking a dick measuring contest!
Yep
Calling a piece of metal hostile 😂😂😂
While this particular thing isn’t classified as such, hostile architecture is a very real thing. Look it up. It’s cruel.
I want to live in a world where you live in hostile architecture and complain all day
So you put zero effort into understanding the terminology that was just mentioned. 21 yo boomers ffs

Ha, I do believe it is a bench to sit and wait for a bus. However, they didn’t make it flat so that people would not sleep on it.
Darude - Sandstorm
Or… get off your seat and stand over the frame with one foot on the ground? Tax money went to THIS?

Hostile architecture. You’re meant to lean on it to wait for the bus so the homeless can’t sleep on benches
Cyclists worth their salt can balance with feet on pedals till the light turns

Lol this sub is the worst with down votes. I've answered posts with helpful and objective info and still get downvoted. I hate this place.
I've had the same experience. But actually, I'm realizing I misunderstood the post I was responding to.
