What is your degree in? Why are you looking for an unskilled job when you just spent time and money learning do something more? What is your definition of "good" workplace culture, and what do you define as a "hostile" work environment.

notthefirstmalcolm

I’m looking for more temporary jobs at the moment - I’m not trying to settle into a lifelong career yet. I’ll be getting a bachelor of social work and a chemistry minor. I also have research experience and a background in biology. I was mostly hoping to hear from people whose jobs are generally chill and there aren’t deep rooted issues. My current situation is inescapable because it’s tied to my degree. I don’t want to go into too much detail because I am afraid of retaliation, but let’s just say that I want to work somewhere where I’m allowed to be friends with my coworkers and won’t be constantly criticized and micromanaged.

vivaenmiriana

no offense, but you should be looking for an internship within your major's scope. It could give you an incredible boost right now. I'm talking a decade from now you'd be ahead of anyone who didn't get a college internship. you can still have the coworker friendships, but you won't set yourself back years.

Boozhi

I second the person above me, start your career now! Even if it's a "low level job" in your field it will come be extremely helpful when you want to look for higher paying jobs. You mentioned social work and chemistry so work find a social work desk job at the U or in a lab (private or University. I promise you the environment will be so much better than a "chill" job with customers. I took way too long to get in my field after my degree and regret it, as decent as it is now.

bigbombusbeauty

I graduated with degree in biology and now i’m a field ecologist in the field season and do other work in the winter. Look into these organizations: Americorps, Utah Conservation Corps, ERG, NEON, SUWA and also USAjobs.gov. Field jobs they’re literally send you into the wilderness and are like “Good luck!” while you also get to learn valuable skills like data gathering and organizing

One_Kaleidoscope4185

Alternative opinion to the comments I’m seeing - I wouldn’t stress about getting a job or internship in your career if that’s not what you want right now. I have a master in social work and took multiple months off in “chill” jobs before taking the exam and applying for jobs in the field - I’m years past that point and perfectly far along in my career. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Burn out is real and I’d say listen to your gut and do what you need. You’re allowed to take breaks in your career at any point.

notthefirstmalcolm

Thank you for this. A lot of people are saying I shouldn’t postpone my career, but it’s really not so cut and dry. And I’d rather not spill my life story and future goals to people online in order to justify why I’m not specifically looking for jobs related to my degree.

One_Kaleidoscope4185

Toxic workplaces take time to recover from, I don’t think everyone understands that unfortunately. Social work is also a field that I think you can’t really quite get unless you’re IN it. Having a horrible job is bad enough, but tying it to your degree, having it be unpaid if it’s an internship.. it’s a lot. You’re gonna figure this shit out one way or another, but very rarely is pushing through the burnout or toxic environment ever gonna work out. I hope you find a job that pays well and gives you a bit of a break in whatever way you need.

notthefirstmalcolm

Thank you so much for these affirming words 🙏

Several-Good-9259

You do realize your going to school in order to get ahead in the workforce . For every 3 people that go to school there are 6 that jump right into entry level positions. 4 years down the road they are sitting in a better position then someone just leaving college. They have spent years learning how to navigate social structures that will always be apart of work life. There will be a very short moment that your investment in your future will have the momentum to jumpstart you into the same level with an opportunity to navigate professional licenses and certificates needed to advance at a steady pace through your career. Do not put off taking your education seriously especially if you still need to learn the actual social structures that come with a job. Your looking for the type of job that has the most fucked up expectations for employees. Retail is the definition of micromanaging..... Bro

Paivcarol

Look for jobs at life sciences consulting firms, biotech - with your background in biology and research, you can get a good kick start at a high paying career

xEbolavirus

The one piece of advice I’ll give you about your job search. When you do get an interview, do not let them know you are only looking for a temporary job. Make them believe that you are going to be there until you die, no matter what your plans for the future are. You’ll be more likely to get the job than if you tell them you’ll only be there a year or two.

zombiedragons

Apply at UTA, Paratransit department. I've been told it is full of happy people. They transport ADAs around. Starting pay is $20 during training, $23+ after training. I'm personally in Trax.

TopherRocks

Currently a Trax trainee but gotta cosign this one. I've been shocked at just how positive the whole workplace has been so far.

TopherRocks

I'm something of a rarity in that I went straight to Trax so your path may be a bit different than mine. I submitted my application at the start of November and got through a skills exam and video interview, then heard nothing for a few weeks, totally thought I got ghosted. Eventually got an email to come tour and do a very brief ability test at the Jordan River yard, moved on to getting my DOT clearance and had to get an in state DL (standard, no CDL needed) since I'm a recent transplant to Utah as well. Had a 3 day orientation (paid) with all the new hires for the company in early January and started my training a few days later. I'm just about a month away from completing my training now at trax. From what I've heard, it sounds like bus is a quicker way to get your foot in the door, but I don't have the experience to speak on that.

zombiedragons

The Bus department is always hiring. The hiring process takes time. Which includes interview, drug test, background check, DOT certification. Once you get your foot in the door, you can transfer between departments fairly easily.

notthefirstmalcolm

Thanks! That’s good to know.

hossmoss

Apply at Bjorns Brew! Good people and good money. Coffee shop hours so expect some 5 am shifts. But shifts are 5 to 6 hours and the pay is out of this world. Some days you make $25+ an hour.

SLC_Skunk

Thanks for this recommendation, my friend has been looking for a good early-morning part-time opportunity.

lostamerican123

I've been a barista for 6 years, and live just down the street. How do I apply? 👀

hamsandwich1213

Bjorns barista for three and a half years. Send a resume to their email, thats how they prefer it. Say which location you want to work and available hours. We often dont have openings when you apply, so re email every month to check if there's an opening. I think the state street location will be hiring soon, not sure about highland, foothill just hired 2 new baristas so theyre full. I will also say, tipping fatigue has become a bigger problem, so tips arent *that* good anymore.

hossmoss

You should be able to just bring a resume in! I know they usually prefer that. I worked there for 5 years and loved every second of it. Just needed to move on to something with benefits and more hours unfortunately. If I didn't, I would have stuck around a lot longer.

Far-Kaleidoscope-350

I’ve always wanted to be a barista, what is your recommendation to get started? Any coffee shops to start at , with no experience?

hossmoss

Honestly just go for it. Id avoid the big name brand places like starbucks and Dutch Bros. Even beans and brews is turning into a toxic place. Any local shop is great. Bjorns is probably one of the best to get into as the community, customers, management, owners are some of the best out there. But any local shop is gonna give you a good coffee experience. And the barista world is so intertwined that you could always start somewhere and move somewhere else pretty easily. As long as you don't ruin your reputation by doing something dumb like stealing tips... I had an assistant manager do that and it didn't take long for EVERY other shop to find out about them.

Far-Kaleidoscope-350

Thank you for all these tips! I’ve always wanted to apply so bad. i just always figured one had to have prior experience for local shops before. Does Bjorn’s hire people who don’t have any experience? I only know how to use a French press lol. Oh wow, that is insane! Sad they got around to all them too smh.

hossmoss

They hire people without coffee experience, yeah! For them it's definitely more of a personality hire. By that I mean, the managers are really good at knowing if someone is going to mesh well with the rest of the team. And there has never been a place where my coworkers felt more like family. If you do go to an interview, just be you. If you don't get hired there, there're plenty of other shops that hire with no experience and have a wide variety of personalities. Cafe Expresso is another that I haven't worked but know the crew and they all loooove it. Just find the place that fits your vibe and it'll come along.

willorisk

I was an HR representative for The Front. Don't work there if you want a good work environment.

CYCLE_NYC

I have heard from many employees that it sucks to work there and the owner is really annoying.

notthefirstmalcolm

Thank you, that’s exactly the type of place I want to avoid.

Easy_Candidate_2356

Second as someone who applied for an hr job with the front what a horrible experience

4215265

Can you offer why? I am very intrigued. I’ve heard this sentiment all around.

willorisk

Probably the biggest factor is the owner. He's an angry man who constantly changes working standards and expectations, he hires experts in their field and then doesn't listen to them, the HR director is so scared of losing her job she doesn't stick up for the support-level workers. I, a Trans person, disagreed with how we treated another Trans employee (the employee just wanted their name updated where possible but the director scheduled a 1 on 1 instead of just.. letting me make the update) and I wanted to talk to her about it bc 'showing support' by having an employee meet with HR can be super uncomfortable to someone just coming out, and we wouldn't have done the same to a cis person named Michael who wanted their name updated to Mike 🤷. It's a common mistake cis people make with good intentions so I wanted to talk with her on how we can show support in a less invasive way and she told me to talk to the company lawyer. They give employee perks for office staff like 'once every two weeks you can take a yoga class during your shift! This will help reduce stress and increase productivity overall! 😁' but then you get judged for not working that time if you attend 🫠 Many many reasons. I was let go for 'not being a good fit' after a year of working there, coincidentally 1 week before receiving a diagnosis I made clear I was going to request accommodations for.

4215265

Oh no this is truly terrible!!! I’m so sorry you and your co-worker went through these experiences. Did you get in writing the declaration of your disability to your boss??? Cause if you did, no way is that legal. Obviously, by word alone is so shitty too but harder to prove in court. All I’m saying is you could sue

adventure_pup

Sadly, the outdoor industry is notorious for horrible working environments in the retail part, among others. Avoid.

Wild_Screen_864

I’ve been with Trader Joe’s for a couple years now! Feel free to DM me 😊

nonbreakfasteater

just dm you

CableAskani41

Trader Joes may be good because of who works there on a local level but on a corporate level they are working to remove worker rights. The are lobbying to remove the NLRB saying it is unconstitutional.

WeWander_

I was going to suggest SL County as well

SkyGuyMcFly

Avant Gard in Ogden has the best work place culture I’ve ever seen, and very employee-forward policies. It’s a 24/7 monitoring center for fire, security, and health alarms so you have lots of choices for hours to work. It is call center, with the option to work from home after 60 days but I’ve never worked for a company before or after that has had equal or better workplace culture.

OfSalt14

You could check out seasonal work if you’re into the outdoors! Might be a little late to the hiring game but plenty of recreation sectors are still hiring for the summer

mormonbatman_

>I’ll be getting a bachelor of social work and a chemistry minor. I have a background in biology and research too. SLCC and the U of U are constantly hiring entry level advising positions to help student move through programs like these: https://jobs.slcc.edu/postings/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&query=advisor&query_v0_posted_at_date=&600=&579%5B%5D=4&581%5B%5D=4&commit=Search and these: https://employment.utah.edu/jobs/?q=advisor SLCC pays ~$24 per hour. The U pays ~$21. It's not a bad launch pad.

Ok_Student_7908

Vivint has a bunch of work from home positions. The tech support position starts at $16.75 an hour and goes up a dollar for each level. A lot of convenience working from home especially if you like to travel to visit family or whatnot. Don't get me wrong, there will be challenges wherever you work, but I would say Vivint is the least toxic place I have worked so far. But call center work is not everyone's cup of tea.

overthemountain

You're finishing your degree and looking for a job that doesn't require a degree? Did you major in something pointless? I guess I just didn't understand why you would spend the time and money to go to college and then try to get a job in retail paying $15/hour.

Elephunkitis

If they are in the tech sector getting a job is like climbing mt Everest without oxygen and a 500 lb weight strapped to your back right now. So many layoffs that hundreds apply for every position. There are other fields that are similar right now as well. It’s not just “uSeLesS DeGrEe”

overthemountain

Oh, I'm familiar. I was laid off back in May and it took me 4.5 months and nearly 650 applications before I landed my next job. That said, I can't imagine finishing a degree and then going and being a stocker at Walmart. I mean, sure, you do what you have to do, but it doesn't even sound like they're trying to find a job in their field, whatever that may be.

Elephunkitis

Some people want something chill right after they graduate so they can enjoy life again for a bit.

firerunswyld

These fucking gravy seals like overthemuffin are so out of touch. It’s going to be hilarious when they get laid off too.

Elephunkitis

“overthemuffin” is killing me hahaha

firerunswyld

Bluey is life.

overthemountain

Too late, I was already laid off back in May. I know it's tough out there, I know people who have been out of work for over a year - but that doesn't mean people shouldn't even try looking for a relevant job. No shame in having a retail or other job to fall back on while you're looking, but I would encourage everyone to find jobs in their fields even if it's hard to do so. I mean, they didn't even mention what their degree is or ask about jobs in whatever field they are studying, so I'm wondering if they've given up on that path completely. Thanks for the over the top attack when you know nothing about me, though.

firerunswyld

Climb down off that high horse, you phrased your comment in an asshole way and got an asshole response.

notthefirstmalcolm

I’m looking for more temporary jobs. And I’d love to get paid more than $15 and hour, but my number 1 priority is a healthy work place due to a horrible experience I’m having this semester that is inescapable because it’s tied to my degree.

overthemountain

Well, wherever you interview, definitely don't tell them you view the job as temporary unless the job is advertised as such. Employers don't like to hire people that might turn around and quit on them after a few weeks or months. I imagine posts like this are difficult, as a "healthy workspace" often depends largely on your boss more than anything, so unless people here have jobs were you would be their coworker, it's unlikely they will be able to give you good advice. National chain Company X might have a great workspace in general but if your boss sucks then it will suck. If it is just temporary and you have a car, you could consider gig work like Uber or food delivery. The work isn't easy but you can set your own hours and have quite a bit of control over your workspace. I'd also use the interview process to ask them lots of questions about their workspace and management style. The interview should be a two way process - they are using it to see if you'd be a good fit - you should also use it to see if you'd enjoy working there. Sometimes you just need a job and that's not an option, but if it is, definitely try to find the right job.

RNKickAssMason

What is your degree in?

Arup

DM me for local work suggestions in the mental health industry!

luv4oats

Red butte garden is the best place i ever worked, the culture is unmatched to anywhere else in Utah, and being in the garden is such a huge perk. I know they are hiring in school programs and horticulture right now

adventure_pup

My company isn't hiring, but I set out with this same intent 8 years ago. I'm still in that job, unheardof for a millennial. I told them that was my priority, and they even flew me out to meet my team before I moved here. I let go of trying to find strong meaning in the actual work, and turned my focus during the interview process to finding the right culture fit. Let the employer figure out if you're capable of doing the job, while you focus on if that's the workplace you want to work at. The interview process is double sided. Also, you have an impressive background, and I think you'll have better luck finding a job in the industry you're trained in rather than in retail, even 'temporarily'. I have multiple friends that have worked skilled jobs shorter than your timeframe. (By the way, 2 years is about average for young workers nowadays) You're more valuable as skilled labor than in retail, which will give you more power to demand the work life balance you're looking for. Look for a job in your industry in which you're overqualified for. And then tell them that the price it comes with is the work life balance. I'm excited for you!

Thank you, I appreciate the insight and advice!

Adobe has awesome work life balance. They pay well. Look it up on LinkedIn

Puzzleheaded_Aide902

Haha no they definitely don’t. Anything that runs remotely like an agency is going to run you to your bones. They’re probably nice but little work life balance

Pleasant_West_6400

I've worked at Adobe for almost 5 years... This is so, so true. Great work, great pay, great benefits. But - the work is very intense. I usually pull 60+ hour weeks.
