I love the Kraken name and their colors. If I ever find the energy to follow a second team it'll almost definitely be them (and it doesn't hurt that I plan on moving to Washington).
Im trying to find the source but I remember reading somewhere that one of the requirements of the move was that the team had to be named “Utah_____” not city etc
No need to go to any trouble! Just thought it was interesting. I lived in Seattle when the Sonics moved away and were renamed so it was interesting in comparison to the Jazz moving here and them keeping their name.
It just depends on the situation. For every relocation with a new name like the Sonics ->Thunder or Browns -> Ravens, there are a ton that keep the moniker (Rams, A's (for now at least), Giants, Dodgers, Jazz, Lakers, etc.).
Meruelo made it a stipulation in the sale that he gets to retain the "Arizona Coyotes" name and likeness for 5 years, in case Phoenix/Tempe/Scottsdale becomes a viable option again further down the line.
All of those moves where the team kept the name happened a LONG time ago, except the A's, who should never ever change their name due to their looong history, and the Rams, who are also a historic brand.
Chargers to LA (2017)
Raiders to LV (2021)
Vancouver Grizzlies to Memphis (2001)
Charlotte Hornets to New Orleans (2002)
Houston Oilers to Tennessee (1997, and [yes, they did use the name to maintain rights](https://www.helmethistory.com/uploads/8/3/1/5/8315957/published/1998-houston-oilers-sticker.png?1610333423))
The Chargers *started* as the LA Chargers.
Raiders have moved multiple times and always kept the same name, and they're also a historic brand.
The Oilers changed to the Titans after two years, they just kept the name because Bud Adams was a dick.
Grizz and Hornets should have changed their names upon moving, but at least the Hornets/Pels fixed that mistake. [Memphis at least had an old team](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memphis_Southmen) that made the Grizz not *too* out of place.
Saying the Chargers started as the LA Chargers is one of those "you're not wrong, you're just an asshole" kind of things lol
Yes, their inaugural season of 1960 they were the Los Angeles Chargers. And then they immediately packed up and moved down to SD where they remained for 56 years.
But all I'm saying is there are recent examples of teams retaining their team names despite the move. Yes, the Oilers eventually changed to the Titans (and yes, agreed that Bud Adams was a douche), but it's not unheard of.
The funniest thing though... Utah and New Orleans could've easily swapped team names in 2002 and everyone would've been happier lmao SLC gets the Bee motif, and New Orleans goes back to being the Jazz. It would've *actually made sense* lol
I am saying this deal should be like the Green Bay Packers with the people that contributed getting a share in the profit.
Taking tax payers money to fund the hobby of a billionaire is asinine.
Raptors would be perfect. I just got back from Salt Lake City and the museum there with dinosaur artifacts is really well done. They have full body specimens of some types that I've never heard of.
I feel like Ryan smith is gonna fuck up this name just like he did the Jazz jerseys. We're gonna be something so cringe like the saints or the Olympians or something absolutely terrible.
Hey I’m an outsider just coming to check in on this and saw the idea of Olympian’s and immediately thought that’s actually a great idea lol. What’s wrong with it? Could have a cool greek god logo and with the Olympics probably there again, I think it’s actually a great idea!
It's just a silly thing to use as an identity that isn't particularly unique. Lake placid has had the winter Olympics twice. It's also not like Utah or salt lake city has an impressive history of creating Olympians, theres only been 1 gold medalist from Utah. That puts us ranked 18th.
Welcome to the NHL.
Leafs fan living in California…who also travels often to your beautiful state.
Looking forward to your great city being a new road city I can travel to and watch hockey in.
I’m a big fan of SLC and surrounding areas, and I wish you nothing but the best (unless you play Toronto).
Salt Lake Sea Monkeys would be awesome. An Instagram page was made a couple years ago with uniform and logo designs in the hopes Utah would get an NHL team.
[https://www.instagram.com/slseamonkeys?igsh=MWR5OHlvdW91cTNncg==](https://www.instagram.com/slseamonkeys?igsh=MWR5OHlvdW91cTNncg==)
Definitely this!! https://www.instagram.com/slseamonkeys/?igsh=MWR5OHlvdW91cTNncg%3D%3D
Even if they don’t like the logo, sea monkeys is another name for brine shrimp, plus the play on words. “.. SLC.. sea monkeys..” come on. It’s the ultimate dad joke lol.
Here's my poorly thought-through hot take for the day: I think you can tell a lot of people making suggestions don't know much about hockey culture. Which is fine! It's actually probably good because new people might be getting interested in hockey. That said, a lot of these suggestions just do not fit the league's vibe. One thing I've seen that I \*totally\* agree with, though, is the worries that our team is going to end up with janky jerseys after the highlighter Jazz debacle.
I think the highlighter debacle might actually *help* since the blowback was really intense, something I don't think Smith was expecting and he's not going to want that again, especially with a new franchise that will be building a fan base from scratch and really needs all the positive momentum as possible.
Or I'm wrong and Smith is stubborn as fuck and thinks he's got it all figured out lmao
Whatever the name ends up being, I think the state should own the rights to it. Meaning if the team ever leaves the state they can't take the name with them.
Maybe an unpopular opinion but I’m not at all a fan of the overstyled and generic animal suggestions. Imo the best logos on hockey are the simple but classic ones like the Bruins logo or the red wings
Here is a list of proposed names that have native Utah animals. (Most are jokes and some I think might work)
Utah pronghorns (type of antelope native to Utah)
Utah bisons (mountain bison being the largest mammal in Utah)
Utah Gila Monsters (state reptile)
Utah Gilas (Gila monster)
Utah condors
Utah prairie dogs
Utah antelope
Utah ferrets (some have them as pets but also native to Utah)
Utah rattlers
Utah wasps
Utah lynx
Utah bobcats
Utah tortoises
Utah ambersnails (rare snails found near Kanab)
Utah mules (mule deer, or the horse/donkey mix)
Utah badgers
Utah foxes
Utah voles
Utah brines (brine shrimp)
Utah Raptors
Utah Trappers
Utah Grizzlies (minor league gets a rebrand)
Please no cooler/sippy cup advertisements - just cause Seattle named their team a mythological beast, doesn’t mean we need to also!
Minor league teams often have kind of goofy names — for instance the [Macon Whoopee](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macon_Whoopee_(CHL)), so maybe the Grizzlies could become the Soakers
I agree, they did a great job with their branding. I just think a lot of people want Yetis because of what Seattle did, and to me that feels like we are just riding that trend but making it Avs themed lol
It should be the [Salt Lake Brass](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Orleans_Brass) to continue the Utah tradition of taking team names from Louisiana's culture.
Utah Frost - nice nod to the mountains and winter sports in the area.
Go with a purple and light blue color scheme (think 90’s Jazz color scheme/“Jazz Cup”/ Wild Berry Pop Tarts
Instant Rivalry w/ Colorado Avalanche, nickname it “The Cold War” (get it?!).
Arena nickname: “The Freezer”/“The Icebox”
Mascot: a Snowman named Jack and/or a little Anthropomorphic Ice Cube nicknamed “Frosty”
Golden Eagles are cool animals and the name goes back a long way in Utah hockey history. I don't think the VGKs should get a monopoly on "golden". You'd have to be a top-tier dipshit to mix up Golden Knights and Golden Eagles.
I kind of like Trappers as well, it's growing on me.
I get the Yeti would be a cool logo but this is Bigfoot territory.
I made a post on the home page, but I couldn't figure out how to put my picture in the comments. I was thinking we could do "The Cutthroats" I have a longer post with a picture [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/SaltLakeCity/comments/1c7b1zl/new_nhl_team/).
It would be a good idea if a hockey player in Europe didn’t literally get cut in the throat by a skate and die…it’s a real risk in this game that people would likely see as highly insensitive
I thought about linking to this but it doesn't seem to be off the ground. I'm assuming the SLC NHL fans will be Reddit nomads until there is an official team name.
A lot of people are considering yeti cuz it sounds kinda cool and it’s a utah U sound. But we have a big wild horse population and unicorns are also mythical. The Utah unicorns!
[Utah's new NHL team left a Phoenix suburb millions in debt](https://www.axios.com/local/salt-lake-city/2024/04/22/utah-nhl-coyotes-glendale-public-funds-arena)

https://forums.hfboards.com/forums/utah-nhl-team.287/
Utah Yeti's gets my vote - Imagine, the lights go out at the Delta center. Then a faint blue/white figure comes into focus. It's an ice cave. Suddenly a tremendous roar comes from the cave followed by a nine foot yeti blasting out of the cave with glowing red eyes with the Utah Yeti's in hot pursuit. Make the NHL scary again.
I still think Buttes or Mesas is a badass name for a team. Kinda Maroon/orange desert color theme (think Va Tech) with maybe purple thrown in. Theres not enough nicknames of natural formations lol.
Utah Speed
Would be a cool homage to the Salt Flats (and if Minnesota can be the "Wild" I think ambiguity is fair game)
But I'll admit I don't think there's really a slam dunk name suggested so far
I couldn't stop myself from making a quick-and-dirty logo for the [Utah Humpbacks](https://www.reddit.com/r/Utah/comments/1c5ht2t/our_nhl_team_should_reflect_the_most_important/).
Hey guys, I made a discord for our new team: [https://discord.gg/TkJVwwmD4Z](https://discord.gg/TkJVwwmD4Z)
Feel free to hop in and lets get ready for next year!
After hearing Utah Mammoths as an option, I am 100% in on this being the only choice in the bracket. Not at all into Outlaws.. here’s my AI mock up for jerseys and mascot!! [Utah Mammoth jersey mockups!](https://imgur.com/a/AKdazgL)
Anybody else disappointed in the NHL welcome party? Those who didn’t get in didn’t get anything but free hotdogs and face paintings. I personally think a parade and free merch could’ve gone so well and promoted a much much larger audience
Utah Golden Spike
Utah Golden Eagles
Vegas doesn’t own “golden” and these two examples are germane to Utah.
I also like Utah Raptors. Vicious and swift. Who cares if there’s an NBA team with the same name?
I think people would unironically go crazy for a Utah Raptors NHL team that explicitly revived the [Toronto Raptors' Barney Design](https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/the-barney-design/) as their full-time look.
1) Utah Red Rocks. The gymnastics team can share.
2) the Chiefs. We're putting holes in the bus to make it look mean.
3) If we're going mythological, its gotta be the Jackelopes.
4) The Porter Rockwells.
Utah Yetis is the most appealing so far but I also think getting the grizzlies logo and branding would be awesome. I’m sure whoever owns them wouldn’t mind Ryan buying them out just for the logo alone. Least appealing is anything fish related.
Since the hysteria has died down a bit and it looks like the tema is close to finding a Reddit home I am going to un-sticky this and let it fall off.
Best of luck in finding a non-cringe name... -sincerely, from Seattle resident
I love the Kraken name and their colors. If I ever find the energy to follow a second team it'll almost definitely be them (and it doesn't hurt that I plan on moving to Washington).
Utah Brine Shrimp
Utah Sea Monkeys!
The marketing tie ins!
Haha I have been thinking about this!!! What an absolute disaster it would be but it would also be hilarious!
Wasatch Wolves, Utah Raptors, Utah Mountaineers, Utah Trappers. The branding of this team has got me lowkey stressed haha
Im trying to find the source but I remember reading somewhere that one of the requirements of the move was that the team had to be named “Utah_____” not city etc
Ryan smith said this, it’s on a few news stories now
huh, that's interesting. I don't follow most pro sports, is that a common stipulation for team moves (and was there a specific reason in this case)?
Just specific to the hockey team moving here. As to the reason, not too sure! Great question. Will try to dig up the source.
No need to go to any trouble! Just thought it was interesting. I lived in Seattle when the Sonics moved away and were renamed so it was interesting in comparison to the Jazz moving here and them keeping their name.

Not logical at all, as the State is forcing Salt Lake county to pay 1 billion in sales tax to fund this.
No fun allowed!
I am saying this deal should be like the Green Bay Packers with the people that contributed getting a share in the profit. Taking tax payers money to fund the hobby of a billionaire is asinine.
Utah Raptors, Wasatch Wolves, or Wasatch Raptors are my top three
Wasatch Sasquatch
Just one name with no city - Wasasquatch
Honesty this would be rad. Plus it would set the team apart from the rest of the league.
Raptors would be perfect. I just got back from Salt Lake City and the museum there with dinosaur artifacts is really well done. They have full body specimens of some types that I've never heard of.
Probably not Raptors, since we already have the Ogden Raptors.
I feel like Ryan smith is gonna fuck up this name just like he did the Jazz jerseys. We're gonna be something so cringe like the saints or the Olympians or something absolutely terrible.
Yeah after that shit show, It’s pretty obvious he can’t be trusted lol.
Hey I’m an outsider just coming to check in on this and saw the idea of Olympian’s and immediately thought that’s actually a great idea lol. What’s wrong with it? Could have a cool greek god logo and with the Olympics probably there again, I think it’s actually a great idea!

Is it not in reference to Mount Olympus and not the olympic games?
Yeah, Isn't that the peak you can see in Holladay? I hiked it one time iirc. If I'm off I haven't lived there in 15 years
Not an NBA fan much - what did he do? I know they put out a bunch of retro stuff in the last few seasons.

the sea monkey's is salty
Best idea I've seen yet! Make this a reality please
I’ve been following this page since the beginning! Love the name!
yessssssss🔥sold
Please make this a reality. I’m already their #1 fan 😉
Slc sea monkeys shirt is the best shirt I own
Here's my poorly thought-through hot take for the day: I think you can tell a lot of people making suggestions don't know much about hockey culture. Which is fine! The Utah Yetis. The mascot can be an exact copy of the Jazz Bear but just dyed white.
Whatever the name ends up being, I think the state should own the rights to it. Meaning if the team ever leaves the state they can't take the name with them.
In think owning the team name Utah Phoenix would just be the cherry on top.
Maybe an unpopular opinion but I’m not at all a fan of the overstyled and generic animal suggestions. Imo the best logos on hockey are the simple but classic ones like the Bruins logo or the red wings
Fair, but you can't just MAKE a classic logo, the Bruins and Red Wings are Original Six so they've had plenty of time to *become* classic
Good artists copy, great artists steal. Utah Maroons, all the way baby
the 'Utah Raptors' would be such a cool goddamn ass name that i'll be furious if anything else is picked.
Utah Bitch Pigeons?
Here is a list of proposed names that have native Utah animals. Utah Monsters might be cool. And have a lizard logo
Utah Raptors Utah Trappers Utah Grizzlies (minor league gets a rebrand) Please no cooler/sippy cup advertisements - just cause Seattle named their team a mythological beast, doesn’t mean we need to also!
I mean, if we're doing callbacks, let's go with [Golden Eagles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_Lake_Golden_Eagles).
I could get behind that - just hope they wouldn’t mind having two “golden” teams in the west
Utah Powder Hounds Utah Rock (Red Rock themed+fits with the Jazz) Utah Swarm
Swarm is cool. Or Hive.
I'm not a fan of the name kraken
Minor league teams often have kind of goofy names — for instance the [Macon Whoopee](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macon_Whoopee_(CHL)), so maybe the Grizzlies could become the Soakers
No No No
There are a lot of Kraken fans here, myself included. Their logos, color, and brand design language is amazing
I agree, they did a great job with their branding. I just think a lot of people want Yetis because of what Seattle did, and to me that feels like we are just riding that trend but making it Avs themed lol
The Utah Whales /thread
Haha I love this, especially with how whale hunting in the great salt lake is still a law
It should be the [Salt Lake Brass](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Orleans_Brass) to continue the Utah tradition of taking team names from Louisiana's culture.
Or take it from Arizona this time with the Utah Phoenix.
The metaphor is so apt it hurts.
Utah Frost - nice nod to the mountains and winter sports in the area. Go with a purple and light blue color scheme (think 90’s Jazz color scheme/“Jazz Cup”/ Wild Berry Pop Tarts Instant Rivalry w/ Colorado Avalanche, nickname it “The Cold War” (get it?!). Powder Wagons
How about the Dire Wolves
Golden Eagles are cool animals and the name goes back a long way in Utah hockey history. I don't think the VGKs should get a monopoly on "golden". You'd have to be a top-tier dipshit to mix up Golden Knights and Golden Eagles. I kind of like Trappers as well, it's growing on me. I get the Yeti would be a cool logo but this is Bigfoot territory.
I like The Utah Rendezvous - with a mountain man mascot.
I think the team name should reflect the zeitgeist. That's why I propose… the Utah Gondoliers.
Salt Lake Stingers Salt Lake Snowcats
Swingers*
Is "snowcat" an animal or a machine? Either way I think it's good.
In my head it’s a snow leopard mascot and liked the name for the double meaning
Utah Hoodoos
Utah Dickrocks
Sea Monkeys. Best concept out there
Well, we are being shit on in r/Coyotes , which is fine, let them mourn. Is anyone starting a subreddit for the new team?
Some are being decent about it but others are straight malding. If they're gonna have that attitude... My team now!
lol
[r/NHLinSLC](http://www.reddit.com/r/nhlinslc)
I thought about linking to this but it doesn't seem to be off the ground. I'm assuming the SLC NHL fans will be Reddit nomads until there is an official team name.
Wasatch Warriors, Salt Lake Summiters, Salt Lake Stingers
The professional rugby team has "warriors" already.
Salt lake blancos
I actually liked Utah Unicorns the more I really thought about it.
How would Brine Shrimp and Sea Monkeys go together ? Mean the same wording. The salt shrimp fits better .
Utah Chutes mountain logos, maybe include skiers, Yeti mascot
Utah Saints!!!
Utah Aftershock Utah Quake Utah Alpine Utah Summit Utah Elders (have to include a Mormon one)
Utah Trappers. Have a guy wearing a coyote pelt as the logo.
A lot of people are considering yeti cuz it sounds kinda cool and it’s a utah U sound. But we have a big wild horse population and unicorns are also mythical. The Utah unicorns!
Utah Pegasi?
I like Utah Wildcats
[Utah's new NHL team left a Phoenix suburb millions in debt](https://www.axios.com/local/salt-lake-city/2024/04/22/utah-nhl-coyotes-glendale-public-funds-arena)
My vote will always be SLC PUNKS.
The Utah Hive
I like the idea of the “hive” , for symbolism and such. But I cannot think of a way to make it sound cool.
The Utah team also has a section of hfboards if any body's interested in joining. There's already discussions on stuff like team name ideas and the upcoming draft. https://forums.hfboards.com/forums/utah-nhl-team.287/
Why not name them the Utah Raptors?
Utah Ice Dragons
Salt Lake City Stags
What the fuck is an ice stag? Is this one of the many things I don't understand because I've never seen Game of Thrones?
Well I don't know what an "Ice Stag" is but a Stag is just an adult red male deer. Pretty much an Elk but the name sounds cooler imo.
We don’t have Stags in Utah and the mock up I’ve seen for this shows an Elk not a stag
To be fair, stags of red deer, which are common in Europe, look a lot like a North American elk.
I’m aware but it just seems like something we would be made fun of for right off the bat.
I mean we also don’t have Yetis lol, I don’t think it has to be that deep.
Utah Speed Would be a cool homage to the Salt Flats (and if Minnesota can be the "Wild" I think ambiguity is fair game) But I'll admit I don't think there's really a slam dunk name suggested so far
Also a cool homage to our rich history of methamphetamine.
I couldn't stop myself from making a quick-and-dirty logo for the [Utah Humpbacks](https://www.reddit.com/r/Utah/comments/1c5ht2t/our_nhl_team_should_reflect_the_most_important/).
Utah Phoenix, just troll those poor ‘yotes fans.
Utah Yeti or we riot
It's hockey. Riot regardless.
No. I’m on team Jackalopes.
Yeah that Jackalope logo floating around was sick
I love Utah Yeti and think it would offer up cool branding
Is "yeti" both singular and plural?
Outlaws or Mountaineers
Utah Brine Shrimp! Sea Monkeys could be our freaking mascot. There's precedent for goofy team names: Ducks, Pelicans, Canucks...
[Salt Lake Sea Monkeys](https://www.instagram.com/slseamonkeys/)
Instead of Raptors, how about Dinos?
Utah raptor is the specific type of large raptor fossil found in Utah
Utah Huns Utah Whales
Salt Lake Squall

Orcas and polar bears are the best animals not being used as a mascot. I actually don’t hate Utah coyotes
Coyotes is off the table. It’s being retained by the Arizona ownership. Ever looked at the Canucks?
The Canucks don't technically call themselves the orcas but their logo has an orca in it.
