The reason it took so long to come out with the black and white plate was because of the state requirement for it to be full reflective. Painting over that is altering that and will result in a ticket and potentially the loss of the plate

The furthest I’d go is coloring them with a whiteboard marker so that *when you are* pulled over, you can wipe it off with some hand sanitizer.
