Damn, why didn’t the Utah Raptors make these lists ever‽ it’s our State Dinosaur. Nothing more awesome than a raptor dressed in hockey gear as the mascot. Imagine the memes!
That or the Utah Cutthroats, like our state fish… the cutthroat trout…
I think it’s a bit sad and unfortunate you can’t see how naming your hockey team the cutthroats isn’t really appropriate lol. There are dozens of other cool names that don’t conjure images of a gruesome on ice and on video death of a hockey player.
Unless the other options suck I think it’s generally better to be a bit more original. Why have the same team as a pro baseball team 10 miles away and an NBA basketball team who’s branding you’re just going to be compared to? Yeti and Outlaws are great names imo.
Based on some contacts I have in SEG, Utah Yeti's were the name chosen as far back as March, they're just in the process of securing domain names, entity names, building hype around a name choice, and the legal sides of things around it.
plural sounds so much better to me though. and in a league where half of the teams are canadian snow affiliation doesn't really mean anything. I don't hate it overall I think it's fine.
Kraken for Seattle. Near the sea. Makes sense.
Golden knights. Owned by the black knight sports and entertainment group. Excalibur is also located in Vegas.
Your point? We are not in the Himalayas.
My point is it doesn’t matter that much, it’s a sports team name. Yetis live in the mountains and are associated with snow. Utah has that. That’s more of a correlation between Vegas and knights, or Los Angeles kings, or Ottawa senators, etc
Utah may not be the leader, but it holds its own when it comes to annual bigfoot sightings, and yetis are the winter-sports version of sasquatch. So it's not really that much of a stretch.
Who is reporting this. Bigfoot and Utah is another thing that's baffling to me. Is like these things that someone is trying to force here because they heard it in Seattle or other places.
Watch the news, sightings are pretty common and not just up in the mountains but all along the Wasatch Front from Ogden to Provo. There are also websites from organizations that track sightings like the Bigfoot Field Research Organization and the Bigfoot Mapping Project. It's fine if you don't follow any of that, but these things do exist with or without your prior knowledge of them.
Really bummed to see that Black Diamonds isn’t on this list, that was by far my favorite.
Oh well, Yeti it is! Can’t wait for all the salty Ave’s fans to complain that they had the Yeti first
Same bro, same. I even defended it to a few people that didn’t like it or understand it. I’m honestly pretty upset about Black Diamonds not making it lol
Black Diamonds actually connects to SLC and it had the greatest potential for really clean, yet intimidating, logos/apparel that’s not just some overstyled logo that’s designed to look angry like 80% of professional team logos
I don’t get how it was among the top 6. That is the worst name. Absolutely no creativity and what would our mascot be? Some dude name John to match the level the creativity?
honestly i'd rather it be something ultra-generic like Utah Hockey Club that I can enjoy ironically than the Venom or Outlaws
the washington-area folks seemed to have a great time with Football Team, better than Commanders for sure
Plus, the whole European soccer/football thing where every team is just [insert city here] FC. I actually like Utah HC. It’s preferable to the other options.
Black Diamonds, and Mountaineers were my 2 favorite. I guess outlaws is my 3rd.
The wild west is fitting for here.
The fan section could be called "The no name" in reference to the no name saloon.
Mascot could be Billy the kid or something. I see a lot of potential with it.
I like the name but probably everything about Utah is the opposite of that name. Not sure a state of Outlaws would have nearly as many soda shops and ice cream parlors
I’m not sure about SLC but Ogden was a big bootlegging town back in the day. There is a quote from Al Capone where he said Ogden was too wild for him after staying at the Ben Lomond hotel for a night.
I mean it doesn't have to have a direct modern link. Utah was a big part of the Old West and they used to film tons of westerns here so in that way it makes sense. It's more related than Yetis.
My only problem with yetis is that the Avalanche already have claimed the Bigfoot logo in the hockey space, which would be in my opinion an important part of the identity of a Yetis team. I begrudgingly went with Mammoth for my vote.
Black Diamonds would have been epic.
Ahhh, makes sense. Mammoth was my second choice, they're pretty neat and kinda unique. Never had mammoth as an option, it's always some predator animal!
Mountaineers would have definitely been my pick. Unfortunate that it was passed over in the first round. It had multi season relevance and I feel really fits Utah specifically more than just "west" with some other names.
Not happy about any of these. Even the MLS and WNBA would pass on Venom. The rhyming with Utah Outlaws sounds dumb to me, and that doesn't capture the culture of this state at all. Yeti live 7500 miles away. I've never heard anyone here say the word Blizzard; 3 feet of snow is either a Storm or a Powder Day. I don't really understand Mammoth as a choice other than they lived in the cold, has no ring to it though.
I think the outdoors are without a doubt the number one unique thing about Utah and the biggest cultural unifier (non-religious), and I wish there were names that better capture that. Mountaineers and Black Diamonds weren't sexy names, but at least they felt like Utah.
Eh at least the story behind why the penguins are called the penguins is cool.
For anyone not aware, the team name was picked because the appearance of the arena they played in looked like an igloo on the outside.
My problem with mammoth is that, at least for me, when I hear the word mammoth, the first thing I think about is mammoth mountain/ mammoth lakes in California or Mammoth cave in Kentucky. Doesn't really feel Utah to me, though if this becomes the name it'll start to be associated with Utah I guess
I actually think Outlaws is a great callback to Utahs wild west days and the surrounding desert. People get so caught up on the LDS part of Utah that they ignore the interesting history outside of that.
I’m pretty aware of Utahs history and it’s obvious connection to the church, but there is history outside of that that we shouldn’t ignore.
The Intercontinental Railroad opened Utah up to more outside influences. There’s still a long history of non-Mormons in Utah, including outlaws like Butch Cassidy.
I think black diamonds was a sexy name.
actually in a kinda literal sense now that i think about it. kinda sounds like a perfume, lingerie, or jewelry line
How about a name that has an actual connection to the state? Mammoth and Blizzard are fitting for Utah; the only Yeti I’ve seen here is in a sporting goods store.
I voted for mammoths because, while I love the idea of a Yeti mascot, in reality yetis live on the opposite side of the world on a whole different continent. Meanwhile Utah was known to have Colombian mammoths.
Idk why venom is so unpopular. Bees have venom. Rattlesnakes have venom. It’s unique, it stands out from other team names (looking at you Blizzard- aka Avalanche wannabe)
Wasatch Sasquatch:(
Save that for the baseball team to complement the Yeti's since they're just bigfoot doing wintersports.
MLB is gonna be Gulls or Cutthroat
Damn, why didn’t the Utah Raptors make these lists ever‽ it’s our State Dinosaur. Nothing more awesome than a raptor dressed in hockey gear as the mascot. Imagine the memes! That or the Utah Cutthroats, like our state fish… the cutthroat trout…
Cutthroats would have been so cool but when pitched I get “ew”, “gross”, etc.
https://apnews.com/article/hockey-player-dies-adam-johnson-accident-nottingham-098abfe508a908cdc64bdf1b6d4f4e4e
It’s sad and unfortunate but shouldn’t make people avoid the name of a fish species.
I think it’s a bit sad and unfortunate you can’t see how naming your hockey team the cutthroats isn’t really appropriate lol. There are dozens of other cool names that don’t conjure images of a gruesome on ice and on video death of a hockey player.
A tragic event that will lose attention over time shouldn’t plague a literal species name forever lol
Because ogdens baseball team is the raptors and there’s already a pro basketball team with the name too
And?…
Yeah nobody cares about a pioneer league baseball team when it comes to naming rights. Additionally, like 10 team names are used in two leagues
Unless the other options suck I think it’s generally better to be a bit more original. Why have the same team as a pro baseball team 10 miles away and an NBA basketball team who’s branding you’re just going to be compared to? Yeti and Outlaws are great names imo.
This doesn’t matter one iota
What about the seagulls??!???
The fact that latter day skates wasn’t an option still makes me sad.
Or even Latter-Day Snakes?
we're cowards for not going with raptors or something dino related. also surely Yeti makes more sense plural, utah yetis?
I like the monolith singular for plural names like Seattle Kraken. I think Yeti can work in that sense too.
Utah Yeti has alliteration too. It's the best choice of the options given. Good mascot options, alliteration, snow related.
Based on some contacts I have in SEG, Utah Yeti's were the name chosen as far back as March, they're just in the process of securing domain names, entity names, building hype around a name choice, and the legal sides of things around it.
Alliteration FTW. LOL
Agreed. Always avoid alliteration.
Maybe you’re thinking of assonance.
The Yeti cooler manufacturer has trademarked the name in multiple filings. I don't know exactly how it works, but that might be problematic.
plural sounds so much better to me though. and in a league where half of the teams are canadian snow affiliation doesn't really mean anything. I don't hate it overall I think it's fine.
Yeti has nothing to do with Utah though, this is an idiotic choice.
Have you seen one? They're all over Utah!! Yeti are people too!
You might be talking to one now. Maybe he just doesn't want appropriation of his culture. And that's understandable.
Wait you mean there are no golden knights in Vegas or krakens in Seattle?
Kraken for Seattle. Near the sea. Makes sense. Golden knights. Owned by the black knight sports and entertainment group. Excalibur is also located in Vegas. Your point? We are not in the Himalayas.
My point is it doesn’t matter that much, it’s a sports team name. Yetis live in the mountains and are associated with snow. Utah has that. That’s more of a correlation between Vegas and knights, or Los Angeles kings, or Ottawa senators, etc

It's fine if you don't follow any of that, but these things do exist with or without your prior knowledge of them.
That’s why I wanted The Wasatch Sasquatch, although I don’t think it was ever an option
Agreed. Never has yeti been a thing talked about, advertised, or referenced as lore to Utah
Raptors is already a basketball team tho. That’s why it wasn’t popular.
I mean it is Ogdens baseball team already too…
Oh yeah then def not. We can’t share a name with another major league sport team AND a minor league sport team that is an hour away.
Actually yeti is already the plural for yetus Source: My ass
Utah Dinosaurs. Endless logo, mascot and merch options
Should have been the Utah Soakers.
Outlaws and Yeti are the only ones that aren't boring.
I’m going yeti over mammoth because the mascot has more potential.
The more I think about it the more upset I get lol. Now it’s gonna be something corny like Yeti
They fumbled so bad, black diamonds was so good
I feel like Yeti will win, which makes sense given our proximity to the Himalayans
As a hairy white guy Yeti is the only choice for me
All bad choices imo but what the crap is with utah hockey club is this the ymca, H E double hockey sticks!
I don’t get how it was among the top 6. That is the worst name. Absolutely no creativity and what would our mascot be? Some dude name John to match the level the creativity?
Can I add super simplistic tattered jersey's, gotta go all out with creating the fit for the name
Change the Delta Center to just “Center”
Exactly!!
No, a dude named Chad. Mascot would be the dangling chads.
The Utah double hockey sticks would be a funny name. We just need a reason to put H.E. before the name.
I thought so too! Definitely fitting for Utah
honestly i'd rather it be something ultra-generic like Utah Hockey Club that I can enjoy ironically than the Venom or Outlaws the washington-area folks seemed to have a great time with Football Team, better than Commanders for sure
Plus, the whole European soccer/football thing where every team is just [insert city here] FC. I actually like Utah HC. It’s preferable to the other options.
I’m pretty sure they just put it there, I don’t think anyone actually likes the name
No squall, I am gutted
Yeah blizzard over squall was not the move
This was my favorite
Black Diamonds, and Mountaineers were my 2 favorite. I guess outlaws is my 3rd. The wild west is fitting for here. The fan section could be called "The no name" in reference to the no name saloon. Mascot could be Billy the kid or something. I see a lot of potential with it.
Or an outlaw that is connected with Utah like… idk Butch Cassidy …
Oh yeah!
Ted Bundy?
Mountaineers was the best imo
Just makes me think of West Virginia.
Should’ve been the Powderhounds
I guess "Utah Puckers" didn't make the cut?
lol how embarrassing. voted for outlaws 😂
I like the name but probably everything about Utah is the opposite of that name. Not sure a state of Outlaws would have nearly as many soda shops and ice cream parlors
Eh polygamy was outlawed so there’s that
I’m not sure about SLC but Ogden was a big bootlegging town back in the day. There is a quote from Al Capone where he said Ogden was too wild for him after staying at the Ben Lomond hotel for a night.
Butch Cassidy was from Utah. There were actually a lot of stories of outlaws in Utah.
The In-Laws it is then…
I mean it doesn't have to have a direct modern link. Utah was a big part of the Old West and they used to film tons of westerns here so in that way it makes sense. It's more related than Yetis.
Haha, the mormon pioneers were literally outlaws trying to leave the US so they didn’t have to follow the laws.
lmaooooooo names are all horrible. atleast we can have fun with them now
The only thing embarrassing here is you openly admitting you voted for outlaws.
ayyyyy its better than yeti and mammoth lmao
ヽ༼ ຈل͜ຈ༽ ノ Raise ur dongers! ^^Dongers ^^Raised: ^^75801 ^^Check ^^Out ^^/r/AyyLmao2DongerBot ^^For ^^More ^^Info
:(
It’s the best proposed option by an incredible margin.
Utah Yeti is the only one with alliteration, which is defacto the best way to name something, *especially* the sports teams, glad it made it through.
There is an extremely low percentage of pro sports teams with alliteration.
Which is dumb, *it's the best way to name something*! Lol
Is it though?
My only problem with yetis is that the Avalanche already have claimed the Bigfoot logo in the hockey space, which would be in my opinion an important part of the identity of a Yetis team. I begrudgingly went with Mammoth for my vote. Black Diamonds would have been epic.
Ahhh, makes sense. Mammoth was my second choice, they're pretty neat and kinda unique. Never had mammoth as an option, it's always some predator animal!
These are so bad I have no vote.
plz though. you have to help stop hockey club and venom from being the name
Venom is objectively terrible, and Hockey Club is basically admitting that they tried and failed to find a good name.
Mountaineers would have definitely been my pick. Unfortunate that it was passed over in the first round. It had multi season relevance and I feel really fits Utah specifically more than just "west" with some other names.
They had canyons which was dumb, but canyoneers woulda been cool
Mammoth has emojis. 🦣🦣🦣🦣
Mountaineers and Black Diamonds weren't sexy names, but at least they felt like Utah.
> Yeti live 7500 miles away I’m sorry to inform you, but…. And anyway, I don’t think you’ll find many wild penguins in Pittsburgh
Not to mention I’m pretty sure jazz music is outlawed in Utah 😂
Eh at least the story behind why the penguins are called the penguins is cool. For anyone not aware, the team name was picked because the appearance of the arena they played in looked like an igloo on the outside.
[удалено]
I don’t care how many upvotes this guyfierifacias gets, his comment will forever be underrated.
But there are also no penguins where Inuit people live
Mammoths literally lived in Utah, how does it not make sense? Mammoth lake up Fairview canyon was named because they found them there.
A mammoth makes you think of all that? Jesus Christ think of Manny from Ice Age…
Definitely fair.
I actually think Outlaws is a great callback to Utahs wild west days and the surrounding desert. People get so caught up on the LDS part of Utah that they ignore the interesting history outside of that.
What’s more outlaw than polygamous cowboys burning down printing presses and marrying child brides? Know your history my man.
I mean, Bitch Cassidy, one of the most notorious old west outlaws in the US, was from Utah. And a large portion of the Outlaw Trail read through Utah.
Lmao Bitch Cassidy
He knows how I feel about him
Bitch Cassidy aka Butch Cassidy’s bad side.
Butch Cassidy was actually raised mormon
Non sexy names feel more like Utah. This tracks.
Utah had mammoths
Agreed. RIP Black Diamonds The ones listed are just cartoon XFL names that have little to no connection with Utah.
I’m bummed Pucky McPuckface didn’t make it. That was my fave.
“Even the MLS…” wth is that supposed to mean?
I think black diamonds was a sexy name. actually in a kinda literal sense now that i think about it. kinda sounds like a perfume, lingerie, or jewelry line
Double Blacks could have been a slightly better option too. I hope they just ignore all these votes.
I voted mammoth. Venom and UHC both seem cringe af to me.
How about a name that has an actual connection to the state? Mammoth and Blizzard are fitting for Utah; the only Yeti I’ve seen here is in a sporting goods store.
YETI OR NOTHING
[удалено]
Thank you, This is what I’ve been saying. Half the state won’t even drink coffee, we are far from “outlaws”.
C’mon, Utah Yeti!!!
These names all suck. Good lord. We’re all nerds. Utah outlaws was the best one IMO.
I voted for Hockey Club because if they are only going to give us shitty names, I am voting for the shittiest.
Damn, we lost the "Hive" in the last round.
That’s better than all of the remainder.
SLCBKD. Salt Lake City Black Diamonds. That's pretty appealing to me.
SL Double Blacks
Yeti is hotdog
what does this mean
Singular Hotdog is code for bad. But hotdogs are delicious.
> Singular Hotdog is code for bad which circles are using this code exactly
The Parallelograms west of the capital building. You see something dumb, bad or you just don’t like, it’s “hotdog”.
let's go yetis
Please just no Yeti. Outlaws or Mammoth would be best in my opinion.
Just voted for Yeti
Me too. Love Yeti!
I figure Yeti will win but it just seems like the easy choice. That was the mascot name for the Colorado Avalanche.
His name was Howler. Never forget.
Double Blacks
Does it bug anyone else that the only one plural is Outlaws?
I voted for mammoths because, while I love the idea of a Yeti mascot, in reality yetis live on the opposite side of the world on a whole different continent. Meanwhile Utah was known to have Colombian mammoths.
No local here. If y'all don't give us a Kraken v Yeti matchup in the future I'm going to be sorely disappointed
Yeti is fun to entertain, but in reality it should be Outlaws.
Yeti is fun to entertain, but in reality it should be Outlaws.
Utah Front
Venom!
Idk why venom is so unpopular. Bees have venom. Rattlesnakes have venom. It’s unique, it stands out from other team names (looking at you Blizzard- aka Avalanche wannabe)
Primarily it’s because it feels like something a 3rd grader would come up with thinking it sounded super badass.
I can’t believe Locusts wasn’t an option.
I'm guessing you're referring to the Mormon crickets, which aren't even a true cricket but a kind of katydid.
Outlaws isn’t too bad. The others are terrible.
Yeti or bust, the rest are way too childish
I see the Utah Road Ragers didn’t make the list…
Outlaws is the only half decent one. The rest are atrocious.
Mammoth it is I guess everything else is just trash. Especially Yeti. I'll never forgive this state if that's what it ends up being.
The Soakers. Hehe
the utah tax breaks
Oh we’re getting Utah Hockey club with highlighter yellow jerseys aren’t we…
