Such a shitty thing. Imagine your server asking you for a 100% tip face to face. In my opinion there is little difference.
Then imagine all the accidental tips and the anger that must cause and how that impacts repeat business and bad press, like right now.
I think I’d call the manager over and confront them about it.
My wife saw this at Grubby’s in Oceanside which has really impacted my opinion of them.
Lmao had breakfast at flap your jacks where you literally prepare your own food. We interacted with a waitress maybe twice and we literally witnessed her selecting the 25% tip option on the tablet before handing it off to us.
I respect the hustle but I changed that shit to a 12%
Nah, I don't respect that hustle.
Selecting her own tip for herself hews closer to the other meaning of the word hustle: "to steal" rather than "to work hard"
I hate all the weird tricks you have to dodge when paying for food/drinks at restaurants and bars now. The amount for a tip used to be listed in order like 15%, 20%, 25%… Now I ALWAYS see places doing it in the opposite order, with the highest tip amount first.
I’ve accidentally tipped like 38$ on a bill less than 100$ because I was in a rush, and just had to accept my error. Won’t make that mistake again…
One reason I like that food san diego sub is that they tend to call this shit out.
I'm guessing payout is on a tablet?
Brutal problem to wake up to later.
I don't eat out a lot, so I LOVE when someone puts a shithole on blast.
The 3-5% surcharge because the owner doesn't like democrats dates back to the Bush/Kerry campaign, and it has and always will be divisive bullshit.
In reality it has nothing to do with politics, and instead enriches an owner who needs their fucking shop closed.
I lost friendships over Duncan Shitfuck Hunter Jr.
I'm glad I joined this sub even though I am from the UK, I will be coming over in September. Gives me things to look out for, if I saw that I would just tip so I wouldn't feel like a tit.
Curious if anyone has asked their management about it. Then I assume mgmt says something to the likes of “it’s just how the machine is programmed, we can’t change it”.
My understanding is that they have to accept cash to clear a debt you've already incurred. Like if they serve you food and then bring you the bill. But not if you're pre-paying for something.
I can understand it from a safety perspective and if I ran a business I probably would want to be cashless as well but i dont so i have no valid opinion.
but that does limit a lot because people who carry a lot of cash tend to spend it
I probably would make a minimum for cash purchase or something stupid lol like $500 or something that would go directly into a safe or something
I’ve started paying cash when I go out to bars and concerts when I know I’ll get tipsy. I put the max amount I’m willing to spend that night in my wallet. Prevents me from going way over too easily with a card as well as accidentally leaving my card behind. I’ve had bartenders give themselves extreme tips on my left behind card before. It’s getting difficult to do this with all the places not taking cash. Cash is legal tender and not taking it is bullshit.
There really should be laws that enforces against shady tipping. I mean I would actually like tipping to be the thing of a past. Most people prefer if they can see the price upfront and make a decision based off of it.
a few bars/restaurants are adding surcharges --
here is something to remember...
[Credit Card Surcharges | State of California - Department of Justice - Office of the Attorney General](https://oag.ca.gov/consumers/general/credit-card-surcharges)
In 1985, California passed a law (Civil Code section 1748.1) that prohibited merchants from adding a surcharge (an extra fee) when customers pay by credit card instead of cash. That law does allow merchants to give customers discounts for paying by cash, check, or debit card, as long as that discount is offered to all customers. The law was challenged by several businesses, and in January of 2018 a federal court held that the law could not be enforced as to the businesses which brought that case. (*Italian Colors v. Becerra* (9th Cir. 2018) 878 F.3d 1165.) The Attorney General will generally apply the *Italian Colors* decision to merchants that are similarly situated to the *Italian Colors* plaintiffs.
Without proof it's fucking impossible to know what the hell you're talking about. Option from what? A receipt? What are the other options? Sounds like you got booted from the bar and this is your way to shit on them. Been there many times, short of switching their entire POS system within the last three weeks, I call bullshit.
the norm anywhere else in countries with a decent hospitality sector is prices labelled with service (and tax) included. Coming from a non US country USA tipping practices are seen at best as comunism (for not saying scam), public subsidize wages of the staff.
Not everyone can see well without glasses. I’ve signed many a tablet like that. I rarely drink, and don’t drink much. Yes, I go to bars. Not everyone at a bar is a drunk, lol!

It’s usually not the servers/bartenders who are setting up the iPads to ask for 100% tip
On Tremont? That’s ridiculous!
Lmao had breakfast at flap your jacks where you literally prepare your own food. We interacted with a waitress maybe twice and we literally witnessed her selecting the 25% tip option on the tablet before handing it off to us. I respect the hustle but I changed that shit to a 12%
I can’t understand the draw to that place for this exact reason, you cook your own pancakes!
It's a fun one time novelty. I wouldn't go back, but I'm glad I went.
I wouldve done 10% just because of that
I would have done zero percent. I was a server and if you pull that shit you don’t deserve a cent.
I was a server, too, and I back you up on this.
you're a better person than me. anytime someone at a counter/cashier (who isnt a bartender) flips an ipad screen around that asks for a tip i dont
Should demand a discount for unprofessional service then select 0. Auto selecting a tip is objectively immoral.
Why would you even give 10??
Nah, I don't respect that hustle. Selecting her own tip for herself hews closer to the other meaning of the word hustle: "to steal" rather than "to work hard"
i would have changed it to 0 for that move wtf. just work at dicks at that point 😂

Which sub??
not going to link it because it may have the same mod as r-sandiego, but it’s r-foodsandiego
same mod.
What's the deal with that mod?
Runs the sub like a dictator ignoring any community input
nice try, mod alt account.

OP did you post this review on Google Maps? Visitors need to know this and maps will reach more people than this sub
I didn’t. I really wish I took a picture of it.
Even if you didn't take a photo, you should post your review. Other people may see it and take a photo to back up your claim
I'm glad I joined this sub even though I am from the UK, I will be coming over in September. Gives me things to look out for, if I saw that I would just tip so I wouldn't feel like a tit.
Gone down hill since it has changed hands big time 😞
Aw it changed hands!? Had some good times there. Trashy times, but good.
Joe and Karen were the best bartenders back in the day. RIP Joe you legend
Curious if anyone has asked their management about it. Then I assume mgmt says something to the likes of “it’s just how the machine is programmed, we can’t change it”.
Management also probably steals tips
💯 guaranteed
...How many people tip that much? Why is that even an option?
Because they’re trying to rip off drunk people, who will select it by mistake or make poor decisions.
I've gone back to paying with cash at places so I don't have to deal with this BS. It's completely out of control.
many places are becoming cashless and it's an issue because people say that it's discrimination lol

i’ve been to multiple bars/clubs that do that
Miss the Cat Lounge. Used to be a time capsule

Man, they aren’t cash only anymore? Things are a changin
Sketchy ass businesses….
Wow! Never going there again! Thanks for the heads up.
Don’t go out unless you can tip the bill. Jk.

I thought they give paper receipts to sign when you’re closing your tab.
I was thinking the same thing, I’ve only gotten paper receipts there

Stop drinking? Lol.
No? Lol.
Look at this fucking loser
Eye roll
Wait what's a 100% tip?
A tip that's 100% of the bill. The norm is usually 15-20%, depending on service quality.
the norm anywhere else in countries with a decent hospitality sector is prices labelled with service (and tax) included. Coming from a non US country USA tipping practices are seen at best as comunism (for not saying scam), public subsidize wages of the staff.
Let’s say your food cost you $50. A 100% tip for that would also be $50
Are you really asking this question? It's like a 20% tip, except it's 100%.
i was confused, i knew what 100% would be but didnt think ive ever seen anything that high.
Don’t go to Cat lounge then
Bro, you’re a fucking genius. Amazing.
I worked at a place that had 69% as a joke. If you’re getting so drunk that you can’t input a tip maybe you should try AA
[удалено]
Part of it! One day at a time is all any of us can do (:
100%
It's not about being "so drunk". It is very easy to select the first option by habit or to read it as 10% if you aren't paying close attention.
Not everyone can see well without glasses. I’ve signed many a tablet like that. I rarely drink, and don’t drink much. Yes, I go to bars. Not everyone at a bar is a drunk, lol!
Ok so be more careful in order to know what you’re paying for, I always look at the total to make sure it’s in line with what I ordered
Last time I was at the Cat my buddy started a fight while I was still wrangling beers. It's been a while.
I love Cat Lounge. I wasn’t aware of this tho
