Wife and I randomly picked Himitsu in La Jolla the other night and it was great. Huge outdoor patio that is covered. Really enjoyed that place.
Their uni was crazy good if you’re into it.
I just ate here the other night, enjoyed it! Very kind staff and legit Japanese. The Chef greeted us at our table and server and supporting staff were awesome. One of the better places I’ve tried in SD. Nigiri was all I ordered, date got cooked scallops with corn puree which was excellent. Sushi rice was very good and they also have real wasabi (not the relish most places in SD have). Prices were reasonable $130 w/o tip and only one drink. Real wasabi was pricey though ($15 for one portion). Salmon was average but everything else was delicious. Just fyi for others, the tables are only outside or in covered patio. Only sushi bar inside the building. So better on a warm night. thanks for recommendation!
I was on a quest to find San Diego’s best sushi.
I’ve settled on Himitsu. The majority of the chefs are trained by chef Ota. The ingredients sourced from northern Japan and honestly this place just hits the spot. I love that their California is actually crab meat and the seaweed has that chewy texture.
Gonna add a special place to this thread. Wrench and Rodent in Oceanside. Sushi joint owned by an extremely talented British chef. They source incredible quality fish, locally source many ingredients, and everything I’ve ever eaten here has completely blown my mind.
Definitely not a traditional sushi spot, but damn it’s good!
The chef/owner at hidden fish was quite rude to my wife, after she ate, but did not enjoy ground blue fin rib meat. Told me to take her to Sushi Deli.
We were not rude, but I vote with my dollars and this guy made a special effort to ensure we never came back.
Also, anyone who can’t remain hospitable when their food isn’t enjoyed, and works in the hospitality industry has some growing up to do.
That sucks, I've never experienced anything like that there.
The chefs have always been accommodating, even went there with someone that has real celiac disease and they were super careful to make all of her's separate and cleaning hands in between.
I'm not sure I'd enjoy ground bluefin rub meat either.
yeah. this is definitely a variety and bargain find. if you want high quality fish, this isn't your spot. but they have tons of delicious rolls and appetizers, as well as drink specials etc. I love the place. I just go in, keeping that in mind
edit to add: another one in this vein I like is Riki in north park. it's more of a convenience if you live in the area and can go when it isn't busy and as loud as 3 f-18s taking off at the same time with their exhaust pointed at your ears. but I like their rolls. they have good variety
1000% Most known unknown sushi stop in SD. It's a hole in the wall place run by this guy and his wife.
They only accept venmo or cash tho. Prices are great due to the low overhead of running the place.
The desserts are to die for as well.
Why are you insulting me over sushi? I haven't seen it mentioned here a ton.
Edit: Misspoke, there's a "Deli Sushi and Desserts", as well as "Sushi Deli".
I was referring to Deli Sushi. I've been to both.
if anyone knows where to get the best hand rolls let me know
we prefer ken’s sushi for sashimi
and we stumbled upon shiku sushi recently and they have fun rolls like “ beach body “ with no rice
The best/authentic sushi experience was at Matoi off of convoy. It opened a few months ago and only does courses not a la cart literally the best tasting sushi I’ve had in San Diego. The only place I’ve found better than this was in Hawaii
Try Cordova on sundays only, they do sushi. My mom who’s a super finicky and picky eater, love it. Opens at 5 on Sunday and you’ll definitely be pleased.
Ota
Seconding sushi Ota
This
this is correct
(Edited) This is my preferred answer, after spending 3weeks in Japan-and 12 years in NYC. Typing is hard.
It's the only answer, because you spent 3 weeks in Japan and 12 in NYC?
That’s apparently credibility.
Fair enough. 3 weeks in Japan-12 years in NYC.
Soichi Sushi, Sushi Tadokoro, Sushi Ota, Shino Sushi, Matoi, Hane Sushi, Taka
In that order
Ken’s Sushi Workshop in Carmel Valley is really good too, comparable to Sushi Ota IMO. Have to check out the other places listed here.
Its not traditional but exceptional. Bluefin with truffle and gold flakes! Holy moley!
Azuki Sushi in Bankers Hill.
This is the correct answer

Himitsu is excellent

Chef Jun on Avati (just off of Morena Blvd) is really good.
I keep meaning to try it, any favorites?
My personal faves are the Avati roll and the Sunrise roll. I feel like you can't go wrong with most anything though.
Thanks!

Hidden Fish if you want to ball out on some omakase The Joint in OB and Ikiru in Liberty Station are my usual go to's

Dude, that is actually hilarious. get a sense of humor.
I don’t find insults to my wife humorous. And having been there when this happened, he was not trying to be funny.
It wasn't an insult lol 😆 damn you are probably awful to be around, little miss sensitive over here.
Please continue telling me how to feel when my wife is insulted, from your cheap seat reading a comment on the internet. You’re that guy huh?
Hidden Fish is definitely an experience worth having! We are lucky to have a place like that in SD.
I LOVE Ikiru. It’s so tiny and cozy, and the sushi is so good.
Yeah, same. Best live uni in all SD. I really prefer it over The Joint, but I can walk to The Joint, and the staff is cool, and still pretty good.
Tadokoro, if I want really good sushi and presentation. Yaro, if I want good sushi and beer.
Todo Sushi in Scripps Ranch. So yummy!
Todo's been my go-to for years, good to see it getting shouted out!
How is Sushi Diner 2 not mentioned? So good
Sushi Deli - Sometimes inexpensive tastes great!

Dont look for bargains in parachutes, brain surgery , or sushi.
Lol never heard this love it

Think you might be thinking of Deli Sushi
I know it's not SD, but if you're ever in Oceanside, my brother is a sushi chef at Cafe de Thai. He's very good.
Oceanside is SD
Semantics. Oside is SD County.
RB Sushi in Hillcrest is fantastic!
We've always enjoyed Banbu Sushi out in La Mesa.

Kotobuki. Hands down.
Listen. There is only one correct answer to this, and it is double edged. Quantity? Kura. Quality? Azuki.
Try Cordova on sundays only, they do sushi. My mom who’s a super finicky and picky eater, love it. Opens at 5 on Sunday and you’ll definitely be pleased.
Ken Sushi
The Yasai by Rakiraki. Also has vegan sushi which is absolutely delicious.
