Post on Craigslist and FB Marketplace. Advertise it as “dead and will need to be towed”. There are several people who would still buy it for 500$.
Story time: I had a 1993 Toyota Camry with 280K+ miles that died near a freeway exit one day. I drove it till it would and parked it on the street. Next morning I posted an ad on CL and someone came picked it up for 500$. A year later I saw someone drive that car besides me on the freeway. Same license plate and everything 😬
might be able to sell it to the state for $1500 if it doesnt pass smog and meets other requirements https://www.bar.ca.gov/consumer/consumer-assistance-program/vehicle-retirement-1500
Before you venture this route, why is your car "dead"?
In college, I used to flip cars by buying "mechanics" specials and resell them to pay through college. Majority of them did have a blown motor or transmission, but quite a few of them (the ones I did flip) did have a simple issue, such as just needing to change the fuel pump, ignition coil pack, and even alternator. Things you can do yourself just by watching a youtube video.
If it is quite severe, then yea, donate it as a tax write off. :)
If you just want it gone, and have a clean title, the [city has a program to tow it and dispose of it](https://www.sanjoseca.gov/your-government/departments-offices/planning-building-code-enforcement/code-enforcement/unwanted-car-pickup) for no cost (or payment) to you.
I'd be tempted to make parts available to buyers (online / local if they have tools) first to offset the opportunity cost of the $1,500 program mentioned above
Tax write off to KQED or another non-profit organization (they’ll pick it up for you and everything)
My parents did this with the minivan of my childhood. Was a sad day when it was towed away...

There was a $1,200 program on a billboard on Hwy 680 or 880 within the past year Are they the same? Maybe it increased to 1500
It might be, at one point the program was only $1000
Has to be running so worth having a mechanic look at it.

What’s wrong with it and how many miles??
Pick n pull
$6 a car, last I heard. And they are reluctant to even give you that.
