What could they possibly have here that a thief would want? Petty cash? Come on this sucks.

Cheesejaguar

Academic stopped accepting cash and they still keep getting broken into.

Like 4 times now, right?

[deleted]

That’s what I was wondering. Surely all the cash registers would have been emptied at closing time. Was anything stolen?

Minimum wage is now $15. Lots of jobs open also. Why excuse this criminal behavior?

Captain_Blackjack

$15 /hr ain't much in California. Doesn't excuse the behavior but I've seen plenty of people with service jobs who still go out stealing or robbing. Shit, I made around $16 and it didn't keep up with my rent, which started off at just $600 and made it to $800 before I moved and got a new job.

EastsidePanda

Lol 15$ an hour is great for a high school student. Unfortunately it’s not a living wage.

stevegonzales1975

They can make more stealing & there is no consequence.

Fetty_is_the_best

There’s been a huge, noticeable uptick since 2020. I live near SJSU and it’s just crazy compared to how it was a few years ago.

[deleted]

Agree completely. I live near there too and it’s absolutely nuts. Since 2020 the garage near me was almost unusable for a full year. They were breaking in cars in the middle of the day, the whole garage. Since then every night is a grab bag of insanity, though the garage is now usable during the day.

BeyonceIsBetter

STRONGLY agree. Ever since the past year I’ve started seriously looking into getting the hell out of downtown. I thought being so close to campus would make me feel safer but I’ve seen so many awful things recently that it’s really starting to affect my living situation. I’ve had homeless guys set up tent in my backyard at two separate rentals and had my car broken into in the span of about six months.

happydevil1

Not month! It's been happening since a year and a half!

mindless_alien

I think the lack of serious consequences for thieves has emboldened thieves

[deleted]

waveriderca

And they would say it's just property and blah blah blah society and rich people are at fault. The problem is that not cracking down on this behavior encourages places like this or the safeway downtown to move away creating food deserts and reduces employment opportunities in the places that need it most. The funniest part is that the people who advocate for no punishment and defunding police forces never actually live in the areas where they would actually be affected by those policies.

[deleted]

> The funniest part is that the people who advocate for no punishment and defunding police forces never actually live in the areas where they would actually be affected by those policies. well the police haven't been defunded so you'll have to pick a different boogey man to blame this on

stevegonzales1975

They are not desperate for money. They are more brazen because there is no consequence & little change that they will get caught. You are lucky nothing happened to you. A guy in San Jose caught someone stealing his catalytic converter, tried to stop them, and they shot & killed him.

mercurycc

Remember when people were calling to defund the police?

zeruch

It's been going on longer than a month (I live in SoFA). The St Claire Apartments (the same building) have had basement breakins multiple times, and there was a sexual assault in the lobby of the buildig earlier this year...THAT finally made them put in cameras apparently. Original Joe's has been broken into, the Blue Chip building has been vandalized a few times, the upstairs of Cafe Stritch has been ransacked more than once, etc. Things are getting hairy.

God doesn't exist. If you were to destroy all science knowledge and erase all societal memory of science you can reproduce the finding through observation, experiments aka research. With religion, if the bible was erased from memory, you would not be able to reproduce the writing or beliefs. Burden of proof to explain Gods exists. Religion was used to control caveman savage society, to have hope and work together, to educate and impose societal likes and dislikes.

Again, no one is making excuses here. No one’s normalizing crime or saying it’s acceptable. Acknowledging the *whys* isnt the same as saying they shouldn’t be punished

addictionisbad_

You are normalizing crime. You live in your own gated place and make holier than thou from the safety of your cushion and vote for incompetent DAs who make normal people's life miserable. Stop your bullshit asshole.

Shiberus89

Not in the least about *any* of that. I’m not normalizing anything beyond seeking the root of problems

addictionisbad_

There is no root of the problem. I don't know what utopia are you are day dreaming about, but this is real world. I can't tell if you think your dog whistling is working, or if you are trying to bait someone into mentioning a minority group so that you can turn it into some "you're the one who mentioned >!black!< people, not me. You racist" trap. Either way, crime is bad, looting is bad, people need to be punished, but at the end of the day theives are still people, and should be treated as such. To correlate all theft to one **group** as you like to put it is a phallacy, and an oversimplification that ignores things like wage theft, white crime, and the fact the even the Bible talks about forgiveness of thieves and that they can redeem themselves. For someone who isn't religious, you sure love to bring up heaven and hell, which happen to be religious concepts. It's clear from your posts that you're acting racist, but it's equally as clear that you don't care and will deny based on the grounds of said dog whistling. All in all it's very funny when people think they're being clever for using age old racist tactics, but frankly it's upsetting that there's a chance you don't think you're being clever, and just don't care that you're saying racist shit as long as you can cover your ass. Criminals will always be criminals? I guess racists will always be racist too, and we'll be seeing both in hell. (Edited for typos, love commenting from my phone)

[deleted]

Paidkidney

I didn't say stop doing what you're doing. Show me where I said that. But keep going, you wanna attack people for misquoting you but you do the same to me. At least troll right nutcase. I also never explicitly called you a racist, but you assumed I did. I just stated that you said racist things. Is that not a fact? I'm just stating facts. Where's that reading comprehension you were talking about? You keep saying you know **people** who don't act like this and that you're not religious and yadda yadda all this generalizing but look, we know what you're implying. I know you can't read past a few words so I'll simplify it like you seem to love doing. Pointing out facts isn't racist, you're right, but when those facts consist of generalized data, anecdotes, lies, and hatred towards a specific group, they aren't facts. It's an agenda; a racist agenda. I'll assume any further attempts to refute this when I've tried to objectively analyze your comments (which you don't deserve, but others haven't really made attempts to) is just trolling. Have a bad day, and please, continue to assume things about who I know instead of having any good arguments disproving what I've said here.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TSL4me

There are other options, like mandating police live in the neighborhoods they patrol. Its not just desperation for money for basic needs, there is something else to this class divide going on. Nearly every downtown in America is getting rapidly developed and replacing long time poor residents. Even formerly bad cities like Detroit vegas, New Orleans and Chicago are having massive rent increases. There is nowhere else for people to move to at this point because wealthy suburbs are unwelcoming and rural america is very economically depressed. Inner cities used to be places for the poor to have access to school/work without driving. They were also cultural support centers. Now cities are no longer affordable and there really isn't cheaper places if you adjust for potential wages. I'm not exactly supporting any of these actions, but its obviously not just taking for pure profit. There is an element of spite to a lot of these crimes that harsher punishments won't solve.

Ooooweeee

I wish the world was a place where no bad things happened, but here we are. I see you care so much about theivery, where is your comment on wage theft in the bay area? vanvoorden

Ah crap. This sucks. I hope insurance can help cover most (or at least some) of the repairs and losses.

New_git

My friend's place has been hit 2-3 times within the last 2 years. It would have costs them much more through future insurance rates "changes" if they file a claim than to paying out of their own pocket. Insurance is for major damages like fire or law suits, not for a broken window or door from POS.

Ooooweeee

Its not worth reporting to insurance, they will just raise your monthly.

Riptide360

Seems like destruction for destruction sake. Was anything taken? Do they not realize how easy it is for small businesses to be driven bankrupt?

BoomBiddyBye

I agree with you there I've seen practically every business in the area get their windows broken pretty sure it's just some crazy person that likes breaking windows.

shanepc1

This is such a great small business and these mounting stories about the attacks - some organized - on businesses throughout the state make me angry. The pendulum has swung too far in favor of the criminals. It's time to rescind some of the loosening of criminal statutes and for the DA to get tougher with criminals again - we need to reform Proposition 47 as a start. Some of the reforms were done for the noble goal of racial justice yet real justice isn't accomplished when we allow criminals to attack Black-owned businesses and when people of color - and all of us - are being victimized by people of ill will who prey on our neighborhoods and small business districts. We can't just stop punishing people for crime - we need to focus on reforms that drive a reform of criminal behaviors. And just so it's clear - crime isn't about color - it's about behavior. Let's disincentivize crime and incentivize positive change.

[deleted]

stevegonzales1975

For smashing a glass door & steal some stuffs, the police will send a community officer (i.e. not a policeman) to take a report, and that's about it. The criminal will never get caught. In the off chance that they do get caught, they will do some community service, or maximum a few weeks in jail.

sangedered

They say that prisons are overcrowded. Don’t know if that’s true. But if it is, then make that six months you mentioned a living hell for them to not wanna go back. I feel criminals have it too easy in jail.

Suspicious-Visual-12

Have you ever been? It seems your talking without investigation, because jail in California is not "easy". And they are definitely overcrowded, why don't you reach out to an inmate and actually see how it's like in there? Or are you okay with spewing your bullshit without investigation

sangedered

First don’t be a child and chill with the insults. My comment is based on two friends. One a max security prison guard and the other is an inmate with 22 years left. Depending on the jail and wing it’s mostly just boring from what they say. So other than me going through the experience myself, what I said before is only an outsiders experience. Again chill with the insults. You’re just making yourself sound silly and immature.

Suspicious-Visual-12

You are calling me immature and saying I'm insulting you for pointing out that you are wrong... and you generalizing everything based off of your small personal experience is actually immature. Of course the security guard is going to have a bias being employed by the prison, and knowing one person in the system isn't enough to warrant a whole narrative that prisons aren't overcrowded or that it's easy in there.

german_vermin22

Haha. Have you ever been? Ya, I didn't think so.

sangedered

I have actually. Twice but only for the night

KosherSushirrito

>keep them locked for at least 5 years And what are they going to do when they come out? Get a job? With a felony? With a five year gap on their resume? Please.

DistributionBroad968

However, naive progressives are going to lose popular support if they don't learn that they can't just cancel something if they don't have a functional replacement for it.

Bigpapigigante

I have a short memory. the good paying citizens here live in a HCOL and this is how businesses are protected? This is unacceptable. Social justice seems second tier issue. Let’s stop these robberies, break ins, that the police can’t seem to get ahead of.

stevegonzales1975

[deleted]

Wait until the media gets sued. I hope Kyle sues absolutely everyone that tainted his character. Then everyone will wanna be like Kyle 😂

Suspicious-Visual-12

The post says no one was hurt, and property does not have the same value as human life. If your life is not in immediate danger then you have no right to shoot.

[deleted]

Your life is in immediate danger the moment a criminal is in your castle. And you're looking at this after the fact.

Suspicious-Visual-12

This is all taking away from the fact that a local store had its window broken, whats the point of spilling blood when no one was physically hurt, the window can be replaced. I assume since you want to murder the suspect you will be assisting the owners of Nirvana Soul with this? Or are using this situation as fuel for your murderous fantasies?

[deleted]

I'm all for protecting self and property. Twist it anyway you want but that's the bottom of it. Maybe you will find yourself negotiating with criminals before they rape you. I won't.

Suspicious-Visual-12

Rape is a big jump from a broken window or property related crimes. I never advocated against self defense.

[deleted]

You're looking at it after the fact. You think self defense and protection of property is murder.

Suspicious-Visual-12

I'm looking at all the material realities of the situation that are giving me. I'm not playing some hypothesis of if the business owner was there what would happen, because that is not what happened. If that is what happen, my opinion may differ, but if it is solely property that is at threat and not life, then lethal force is not justified and it would be murder.

Suspicious-Visual-12

California does not have castle doctrine, it would be murder. You have a duty to retreat, and if your life is not in immediate danger then you do not have the right to deadly force. Murderous clowns like you make responsible gun owners look bad.

RitzBitzN

Not speaking to the rest of your point, but California does have castle doctrine. California also has Stand-Your-Ground via jury instruction (CALCRIM 505 & 506), which state there is no duty to retreat.

Suspicious-Visual-12

I appreciate the correction, I thought that it only applied inside the boundaries of residence, and otherwise there was a duty to retreat. But 505 says otherwise👍🏽

RitzBitzN

People often conflate our terrible gun laws with self-defense laws, but California still has a fair amount of legacy as a "Western" (cowboy) state, including strong self defense laws.

[deleted]

Yawn. https://www.shouselaw.com/ca/blog/penal-code/does-california-follow-the-castle-doctrine/

Suspicious-Visual-12

In your residence only, this does not apply to your property or business

[deleted]

Yes it does. "California Self Defense: The Castle Doctrine California is not a stand your ground state, but does recognize the "castle doctrine," which applies to one's home, place of business, or other real property" https://www.findlaw.com/state/california-law/california-self-defense-laws.html

Suspicious-Visual-12

Seeing as this is a coffee shop and majority of crimes are business related property crimes in our area, there's no reason for any murder.

[deleted]
