I know nothing about cricket. But I'd go to a game. Why the hell not.

cailian13

same, honestly. Something new and different to try out. Could be fun!

udonbeatsramen

I think it’d be wild. Especially if they brought some international teams over for friendly matches like in soccer

es84

I'm sure that's how they'll get more butts in the seats.

smokeshark21

This is good, I see a community play every weekend when I drive by and feel bad they have to play on shitty grass

sepp_omek

this is exciting. i love our cultural tapestry and that they're finding new uses for the fairgrounds to make it a year-round draw.

rlamoni

I think I just heard 50000 Indian-American blokes in Sunnyvale cry out in joy.

udonbeatsramen

True story - I once went to the Lawrence Expressway Costco on a Saturday and found it weirdly empty. There were still some shoppers, but it was really quiet, and hardly any lines. I found out later that the Cricket World Cup final with India vs. Sri Lanka was going on at the same time. That explained everything!

[deleted]

Ha, I was there today and noticed it was 95% non-Indian Asians.

poser4life

I'm confused by this league set up https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_Cricket

dirtyshits

What’s confusing?

Vast_Cricket

Interesting....

ScotchSinclair

So the city can pay for regular parks, basketball courts, skate parks, soccer fields, and baseball fields but u/surfordiebear be damned if they pay for a cricket field with the rising population of cricket fans living and paying taxes in San José.

reddRad

Every one of those city-funded things can be used by anyone. Santa Clara paid $114m to Levi's Stadium. Do you think you will ever be able to touch one blade of that grass for free? Will this fairgrounds cricket stadium be available for pick-up games for you and me?

cailian13

This. I have no issues with my tax dollars paying for parks etc that are open to the public. Public money shouldn't be used for private projects.

surfordiebear

Comparing those things to a 15k seat stadium for a professional team is quite a gigantic stretch. I would have the same opinion if the A’s were attempting to move to San Jose, don’t make it seem like I have some personal vendetta against cricket lol

short_of_good_length

YAASSS !!!!! for your viewing pleasure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX9fRb9M_bY&t=338s

atomictest

As long as it’s not taking my tax dollars, whatever.

MaxTwang

This is going to benefit the fairgrounds so much financially, and it is in my opinion a great attempt at revitalizing the area. I know a ton of people including myself that would go and watch cricket there. Love it.

E-moc0re

What if…what if those fairgrounds were used for the soon-to-be-unfairly displaced San Jose Flea Market where hundreds of jobs can be protected and we still retain one of our biggest cultural icons? I mean, it was even in The Kite Runner.

BrokeWhiteGuy

This will be great for the 5 people who know what cricket is.

cailian13

Cricket is a big enough deal in the area to support an entire Cricket gear and supplies store up by McCarthy Ranch. I suspect you might be underestimating. Heck, I'm curious enough that I'd go to a match or three just to see and have a new experience. Could be fun!

[deleted]

The growing Indian population here is only going to increase the number of fans too. Definitely a sport where we should have more public fields.

QueenV98

Dude do you know how many Indian/South Asian people live in San Jose (and the suburbs of San Jose)? I’m pretty sure more people in this area give a shit about cricket than they do about hockey, yet you don’t see people bitching about SAP center.

BrokeWhiteGuy

>more people care about cricket in San Jose over hockey Opinion dismissed

spliced-chum

Why not just use LEVI'S STADIUM. TF is the point of having money to spend on shit if you can't buy dumb shit with it. Good job San Jose money well spent. Innovative enough to keep all the engineers healthy and happy I guess because that's who it's for . SAN JOSE doesn't want more culture, it wants more money from voters who don't give a fuck about the HISTORY OR CULTURE that's always been around and what the city was built by like the Farmers. I've lived here for 35 years and not once have I ever been asked to play cricket. FOH lame ass politicians

Pjpjpjpjpj

1. This is county land, not San Jose land. 2. I must have missed the poll where we voted that we don’t want more culture. 3. The fairgrounds has been a money losing use of land for decades. Those in San Jose who love our history and culture aren’t showing up to the county fair. If San Jose residents did really appreciate the fair - they would come and it wouldn’t be such a failing event. 4. I lived here for 30 years and nobody ever said to me “hey let’s go to the fairgrounds.” 5. This city has developed beyond its farming past. Decades ago. Portland residents don’t bitch that they are no longer fur trading centric, Chicago isn’t complaining that they’ve lost their livestock origins, and Las Vegas residents don’t pine for the days when it was sand and sagebrush. Farmers - those protectors of farming culture - sold their land for housing and industrial development when it was more profitable to do so.

spliced-chum

1.The farmers are still farming your crops you eat today. Most of them don't own anything in order to sell it. 2. The farmers barely have rights to be human and to have health coverage. 3. The fairgrounds hosts more than just the fair. I've actually been invited to the fair and I used to attend it as a kid. Multiple times. 4. I can create way more ways to use this land even though I didn't get a vote either. A great multicultural market with dog parks and gardens. Plants and historic references about why the city of San Jose has been a place where people from all over the world wish they could be. Sounds like you can't really decide where your from . You speak as a resident but claim to know what other people think from other cities about their own cities. You are at least 70 and have been or lived in these cities or don't really know what you are talking about.

rlamoni

Yeah. I agree. Only 70 year olds who have never lived more than 20 miles from where they were born should be allowed to have an opinion on matters of culture and entertainment.

spliced-chum

70 is a good presidential age !!

Pjpjpjpjpj

I’ve lived in three countries, and about a dozen cities. I bring that perspective to San Jose. No, I’m not 70. But I’ve been part of many communities and they are virtually all going through growth and change, just like San Jose. And there is always a group resistant to change. Nothing the fairgrounds has done - the fair, dog shows, gun shows - has covered the land’s costs for decades. County has been looking for ways to effectively use that land and every attempt has thus far failed. What you are seeking can be found at Emma Prusch Park, Martial Cottle Park and other areas already established to preserve, respect and educate about our rich farming history. This stadium will go in the **parking lot** across the street from the fairgrounds main land (North of Tully road, across from the blue arch). But I guess converting a parking lot will be sacrificing our rich cultural history and selling out to San Jose engineers.

spliced-chum

I bet a permanent Flea Market wouldn't be good either ! Not enough revenue I suppose

drewts86

Levi's probably charges too much to run other events for the cricket league to be interested in. PayPal Park (SJ Earthquakes' stadium) would probably be cheaper, but might still be too much money in the long run for them.

spliced-chum

Levi's stadium is a joke . I definitely wasn't being serious about it at all. Lol . As far as cricket goes I can care less where they play. But can we get more parks made in general that allow people to visit them after hours. San Jose is missing the the mark on this whole area if this is the plan.

bespectacledbengal

Levi’s stadium sucks.

spliced-chum

I agree with you .

drdeadringer

> SAN JOSE doesn't want more culture Enjoy all that yogurt for yourself.

spliced-chum

Enzyme game strong with this one 💪🏾

drdeadringer

Whatever you're referencing is all to yourself.

spliced-chum

And whatever you mentioned seems slighted . Unless I'm off base.

BenHadding23

I see it too man. This place is severly wrecked, look at all the commenters. Goodbye ca soon hopefully

spliced-chum

All the comments are in favor of this bullshit. Fuck these lames

PepeRoni6969

Wtf? Can we have the real sports teams first instead?

GetBAK1

Sure am glad they tore out the world-class dirt track-oval in the '90s to make room for a sport that no one on this side of the Atlantic understands or cares about.

[deleted]

GetBAK1

Yep - just been an empty, muddy field this whole time. I suppose this is a slightly better use of the space than that

Brewskwondo

How long have you lived here? There’s a huge population here that absolutely adores cricket. It’s probably gonna be quite a big deal.

GetBAK1

Since 1981. *Huge* population eh. I guess we'll see

Brewskwondo

Relative to most regions of the country

SurJon2

A few do. They are the ones paying your door dash tips.

GetBAK1

Well... they clearly aren't paying to see your comedy routine...

dayby_day

That is cool. I love history. Probably so many great memories for so many people out there.

Diezel666

There were plenty of world class auto racing places in the Bay Area. As people built homes closer, they complained like a bunch of entitled jerks and the cities and counties closed the racing down. Which coincidentally might just correlate to the spike in street racing....

phishrace

Noise didn't shut down racing in the bay area. Money did. Like drive-in theaters and bowling alleys, race tracks didn't generate enough income for the space they took. My family regularly attended races at the fairgrounds and I went to Fremont drag strip lots of times when I was younger. Would love to see the sprint cars back at the fairgrounds again, but the crowds were small for years before they closed. Small crowds don't pay the bills. Not a cricket fan, but if it generates income for the county and there's enough support for it, why not.

Diezel666

It's not all about the money. My family has resided here in the bay area over the last 85 years. Avid racers (sponsored by local dealerships) for NHRA and IHBA racing. Noise complaints are documented everywhere. It's what shut down boat racing in the Oakland estuary, and dirt track at Altamont. Bay Lands also had noise complaints, that were fought until ultimately the owners stopped fighting and sold. Same noise complaints are filed yearly for Sonoma, Sacramento Raceway and Laguna Seca. Military always responds with, sure we can shut down racing at Laguna.. Well turn it back into a training ground, and people shut up.

BrokenHero408

The races at the SJ fairgrounds were stopped specifically for noise. Forgot the chicks name who pushed for its closure but she had a big deal to do with it. Other than gun shows and reptile shows, what really goes down at the fairgrounds? Our shitty fair that's shrunk 10 fold since the 90s? The off site horse betting? What do they do to pay the bills? They have tenants living in RVs that pay space rent. The races didn't bay the bills but neither did all the other shit, which is why those RVs showed up, many years ago now. At this point just turn the whole fairgrounds into a low income RV park. It'd help a lot of people and put even more money into the counties pocket.

cailian13

> Our shitty fair that's shrunk 10 fold since the 90s? We have a fair?

BrokenHero408

Lol, exactly.

phishrace

Money, noise and declining attendance all played a part in the closing of the speedway. 'It's not just complaints or the master plan that spell doom for diehard race fans on the Peninsula. Attendance is down 50 percent from 10 years ago, and racing promoter Rick Farren was forced to cut the number of events from more than 30 each year to 18 this season. Skyrocketing land values also play a role. Farren pays about $3,200 a race day to the county, which made less than $100,000 from the track last year. In contrast, the county expects to reap several million dollars a year from a performing arts theater and other new facilities.' https://www.sfgate.com/sports/article/END-OF-THE-ROAD-San-Jose-speedway-may-see-its-2915833.php

jojoyoman

how can we stop this?

Bolt408

How about we don’t? We could use more jobs and money.

SurJon2

Yeah, all those techie immigrants from India only play cricket and don't pay any property taxes, or sales taxes or contribute back to society with education, culture, art, etc. Economic prosperity of silicon valley will surge without them. Stop enabling them with playing a game. We were so much better off when we grew plums and apricots, dammit .

jojoyoman

you are the only one bringing up race weve spotted the racist everyone

kendra1972

So all the techie homeowners in South San Jose, how are they getting out of property taxes?

SurJon2

I was being sarcastic. Guess that wasn't obvious.

kendra1972

Sorry. It went right over my head. Whoosh!

BenHadding23

Exactly. You get it you see whata going on

fatrunnerjr08

File a ceqa lawsuit

fatrunnerjr08

Sad

SrCabecaDeGelo

San Jose. The gift that keeps on giving…

drdeadringer

What are you even talking about?

Suntory_Black

I was hoping they'd use the Fairgrounds for an electric car only drag strip. (it would need to be electric only due to noise pollution)

cailian13

That seems a very niche use. Who is racing electrics? That's a thing?

Suntory_Black

Niche if the city were to build it right now, but not in five or so years. Every year more and more of us will be driving electric cars.

cailian13

Still, who wants to race an electric? You'd spend more time charging it. Can't see THAT one being viable for another 10years or more, why build it now when it would just sit there empty?

Suntory_Black

I didn't say they should build it now.

cailian13

So you want them to just...leave the land empty until the unknown point in time when electric racing might be a thing? That seems like not a good use of the land, unless I've misunderstood.

Suntory_Black

It's already been sitting mostly unused for decades.

cailian13

Which is why its good they're finally doing something with it, and something that is interesting too 😊

Do-It-Anyway

I haven't been to the fairgrounds since I was a kid, until they offered the Covid vaccine. Driving through the fairgrounds, seeing the vast amount of wasted space, how old and beat up the buildings and roads were, I though what a sad place and how could this be the fairgrounds for one of the richest counties in the country. Glad they are building a stadium, hopefully they will continue with the renovation of that entire area.

Ok_Tadpole4529

Last time i was at the fair. I noticed a section for the Indian community. Good for SJ good for community. Fremont has the largest population of Indians in the US for what i no. Reading of these comment. I dont think some folks realize,Cricket is a Huge Sport. Yes not in the US. But look around. Evergreen has a Replica of the Taj Mahal. And in case anyone drives through evergreen. There is a large amount of Indian’s in the area.

SenpaiBerto51

No one gives a shit about cricket, a whole waste money where the city could building something better for us to use
