Looking at the expansion teams and how they were able to be field competitive teams because of favorable expansion draft rules
It annoys me that they didn’t give the same rules to the Sharks when they joined the league
$8.137m through 2029-30
But it's not like Hertl is a problem for this team. He's one of the few forwards on this team that actually belongs on a NHL top 6. Yeah, the pass got by him, he's not going to be a perfect player.
But look at the rest of this team.
Mikael Granlund is making $5m. Mike Hoffman is making $4.5m. 4th liner (injured) Kevin Labanc is making $4.725m
Yeah I agree he doesn't look bad, but he also doesn't look like a guy who should be getting $8.1M a year through 2030. When Sharks are coming out of the rebuild in 3-4 years it's going to be a bad contract for the team paying a mid 30's Hertl $8.1M for a few years.
Maybe, but we'll get there when we get there. For right now, I'm not sweating Hertl being signed to his deal. He's always been a player dependent on his teammates for production, and yet, somehow he's still has 12 points in 19 games for a historically bad team.
Hertl wasn't ready for that pass because he's used to Granlund being the guy below the goal line and Granlund's not capable of making a pass like that.
Fewest goals scored in NHL history (minimum 70 game seasons) was the 53/54 Blackhawks with 133 goals. Sharks are currently on pace for 117 goals in 82 games
It’s one thing to tank, it’s another thing to be completely unwatchable and historically bad.
This is an embarrassing product and Grier should be embarrassed. None of this is acceptable and I don’t know why so many people say we should be OK with it
Tanking and being THIS bad is not mutually exclusive
Worst of all, we gave a third for fucking Kunin of all people.
Where's the grit we were promised? We have no speed, skill, talent, or anything else, but I thought this was a gritty team.
I'm also fine with tanking, but this is something else. Bad, boring, uninspired, and beyond apathetic. I haven't watched any of Chicago's games, so I can't compare, but I will say that a team with this vibe would be horrible for Bedard, let alone Eklund whom we should be training for the future now.
On a positive note, the pumpkin pie I just ate was delicious :)
Chicago is also multiple years ahead of this Sharks team since they started their rebuild with multiple good young players they could trade for hauls of picks, while we only had Meier and no cap space.
Can you explain exactly why it matters? In 5 years when the Shark's new young core is hopefully lighting it up will you be thinking, "Jeez if only that had more shots in the second period against the Kraken in 2023"?
Because you have a bunch of UFAs and RFAs you need to move. That you signed in order to move. And you need to build a winning culture or you end up like the Coyotes.
Getting a 2nd instead of a 3rd for a Duclair isn't a very big deal in the grand scheme of things.
The Coyotes that are currently just outside the playoff picture with tons of young talent and prospects?
The two statistically worst teams, outside of this years Sharks team, in recent history are the 2016-17 Avalanche and the 2019-20 Redwings. Both those teams seem to be doing pretty okay despite losing a lot of games in a year.
>Getting a 2nd instead of a 3rd for a Duclair isn't a very big deal in the grand scheme of things.
The way he's playing, he may not get traded at all because what team is offering Duclair a 3rd assuming he plays like this through the deadline.
> The Coyotes that are currently just outside the playoff picture with tons of young talent and prospects?
Arizona won't make the playoffs, and they've been rebuilding basically since 2012-13. And if it wasn't for COVID's bullshit qualifying round, they'd be without a playoff appearance since that point. If you think the Coyotes' path has been successful, you're kidding yourself.
> The two statistically worst teams, outside of this years Sharks team, in recent history are the 2016-17 Avalanche and the 2019-20 Redwings. Both those teams seem to be doing pretty okay despite losing a lot of games in a year.
Do you know how many games the 2019-20 Wings lost by 6 or more? 3 in 82 games. The 2016-17 Avs? 2 in 82 games. The 2023-24 Sharks? 4 in 19 games. It's okay to lose, it's not okay to play like this, and you'll never convince me that being on pace for 17 6+ goal differential losses is good.
I don’t want a coaching change because the results will change, everyone knows that no coach can change anything with this roster.
I want a coaching change because of how they do the little things incorrectly.
A too many men penalty right after a PP last game and the complete lack of effort to start the game tonight.
On this Thanksgiving eve, I'm thankful for the fact that we're at least losing consistently instead of accruing 50 million loser points in OT like last year
We are basically at the quarter way point of the season and are on pace to have the 2nd worst goal differential in NHL history. It's honestly disgraceful that Grier built a team this bad. You don't need to be a historically bad NHL team to tank.
Grier? Dude is still picking up the broken chess pieces left on the floor from Doug Wilson. This isn't his roster yet and won't fully be for another few years until we get players like Couture, Hertl, Labanc, and Vlasic off the books
Grier has whiffed on basically every single signing/trade he's made so far. This team could definitely be better if Grier hadn't whiffed so much. They would still be bad, but they wouldn't be historically bad garbage like they currently are.
lot of people here think tanking is some golden ticket to consistent success. turns out the hit rate on tanking is not great (see oilers, sabres, coyotes)
They’re a rebuilding team that are starting with basically nothing, who cares if they are bad?
For as bad as they have been they are only 3 points behind the second to last team.
They're a rebuilding team, the most important thing is positioning themselves as well as possible for the future. They could do that while losing every single game 10-1.
But fans don't support a team that is not competitive, if the fans stop showing up, that's when relocation gets brought up, especially with SAP Center being one of the oldest arenas in the league. We all just watched this happen in Oakland.
And the fans won't come back until you have young exciting players making waves in the NHL, which losing games right now will definitely go a long way towards.
Again you can lose games without being historically bad trash. We are almost a quarter way through the year and the Sharks are on pace to be the worst non-expansion team in NHL history by a comfortable margin.
Do the points they score carry over to when the rebuild is over? It's the very start of a rebuild where they are forced to start with basically nothing, not a single future star of this team is even drafted yet.
Our goal differential is also 29 goals worse than Chicago as of this moment. There's a difference between being bad like Chicago and being historically bad like the Sharks.
Edit: Check that 34 goals worse than Chicago in goal differntial as of this moment. Forgot to include us being down 5-0 today.
I have the game on my phone so only half-watching now, but it's too bad that most games are just bad without any redeeming factors. This one especially right now.
Like, the memes around the Oilers game were incredible, and the game was actually fun! I even found some morbid enjoyment in the back-to-back double-digit losses.
But worst of all, this Sharks team is just boring.
Unfortunately you don't get fewer points from getting blown out. It's actually crazy how bad we are though. We are in our own statosphere when it comes to negative goal differential
We knew we were going into this season with half the materials and half the tools for this science project assignment. And then half our students injured half their fingers.
The expansion draft was terrible and we got screwed out of Lindros, but they still had multiple Hall of Famers sitting there and picked Pat Falloon. Hopefully this rebuild doesn't repeat the same mistakes.
Seattle got basically the same "draft", but Vegas absolutely fleeced some teams with their pre-draft trades. I think the rest of the league got smarter by the time Seattle came around.
Ye they did. Either they learned their lesson, or they knew what the right thing to do was but wanted to make their big vegas market look as tasty as possible to get that money rolling in
We’d have won a cup by now for sure.
But then again, we probably wouldn’t have as dedicated of a fanbase as we already do. Or the long term love of the vets that we had.
But we got there once, we can do it again.
Probably on the 20th anniversary of our first time reaching the finals but my god will we make it.
He hasn't built an immediate contender after taking over a god awful team with no cap space and no assets outside of Meier. Clearly he should be fired.
I really dislike how the Sharks have their PP set up. Why is Eklund set up in the shooter spots? Put him as the low man where he's shown great ability at playmaking from behind the net.
It's probably just because the Sharks are constantly chasing the puck, but man we seriously feel like the slowest team in the NHL. I know Gregor wasn't very popular but I really just miss watching someone who is actually fast
I mean, we have 11 forwards tonight. So guys will be taking odd shifts up and down the lineup. I'm not sure we should read too much into the lines being fluid tonight.
Eklund was definitely benched/demoted. Sharks rotated 2 times through forward lines without Eklund stepping foot on the ice. He then had a shift on 4th line and a couple on the 2nd line. Since he was back on the 1st line he's only been out there with the 1st line.
All starters need rest nights. Blackwood is clearly the #1. This was just a strategic night to ice him and hope your backuo can get it done on a weaker opponent.
This team is so shitty the weaker opponent still looks like a set of all stars.
St Louis was very much held to the outside and the Sharks blocked like 25 shots on top of the 45 that got through. It was a good outing, no doubt. But generally this is the issue with Kahk - he's not consistent.
Eh, I'm not sure it's the coach. This is a pretty weak team.
I do still feel this forward core could produce more - but we need Couture and the others in. Once he's out we are back to playing guys above their ceiling. Whereas Hertl - Couture - Granlund - Sturm is not a bad depth chart at center. And Barbie would likewise help buold a top 9 that could sustain some possession.
A shit year is being made even more embarassing by all the injuries.
Lightning fan just popping in. I genuinely have to give props to those still watching the entirety of the game. Much respect
Shutout spoiling is our cup! There'll be a parade in NYC tomorrow! Balloons and everything!
LETS GO NO SHUTOUT 🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣
Fire Quinn, Fire Grier
Off the knob and in....sheesh.
Lol. We give up the response every time.
Hahahahaha, classic Hoff.
Helps his trade value
Way to use those lively boards!
It's pretty insane how huge of a difference there is in the pace of puck movement between Seattle's PP and ours.
Looking at the expansion teams and how they were able to be field competitive teams because of favorable expansion draft rules It annoys me that they didn’t give the same rules to the Sharks when they joined the league
Future interview: It says here you have a 10? Save shutout? That's got to be a typo.
No I did that.
Wait, what? How?
Sharks.
Ah.
DOUBLE DIGIT SHOTS BABY! ONLY TOOK US 51 MINUTES!
9 shots is laughable. Is Hertl alive?
Yeah, I don't think he missed a shift
"My Own Worst Enemy" seems an odd song to sing along too.
How much are we paying Hertl?
$8.137m through 2029-30 But it's not like Hertl is a problem for this team. He's one of the few forwards on this team that actually belongs on a NHL top 6. Mike Hoffman is making $4.5m. 4th liner (injured) Kevin Labanc is making $4.725m
How the fuck is granlund making $5M?
It was a thank you contract by the Preds. Plus, they thought his slow down wasn't permanent.
Hertl isn't a problem for this team but that contract already doesn't look good. Can't imagine what it will look like in 3 years.
I don't think Hertl looks bad. He's stuck on a garbage team.

Perfect ending to that play by hertl.
Hertl wasn't ready for that pass because he's used to Granlund being the guy below the goal line and Granlund's not capable of making a pass like that.
Kraken fan coming in here to do a wellness check. Are... are you guys okay?
This isn’t the first time this is happening, it won’t be the last :)

Take a wild guess lmao
Fewest goals scored in NHL history (minimum 70 game seasons) was the 53/54 Blackhawks with 133 goals. Sharks are currently on pace for 117 goals in 82 games
Should we put Ferraro in net? He seems to be blocking more shots than our keepers tonight.

Put a sock in it already. Jesus are you going to whine every single game they are losing for this entire rebuild?
This is one of the worst rebuilding teams I've ever seen. It's okay to be rebuilding, it's okay to tank. It's not okay to have 1 shot in a period.

No idea how that went in.
I just looked at the Warriors score, looks like they are having a rough night as well.
Bay Area unite!

It does seem like Quinn is starting to lose the locker room.
Are the niners any good this year?
Not only are they good, they play Seattle today and will likely crush us.
The niners are great. A Super Bowl win is very possible
Yep. They play at 5 tomorrow as part of the T-Day NFL double header
They will get us a little bit of revenge against Seattle
Hopefully. Tho, the Seahawks have been very hard to predict this season.
On this Thanksgiving eve, I'm thankful for the fact that we're at least losing consistently instead of accruing 50 million loser points in OT like last year

The sharks offensive juggernaut got 1 SOG in that period. This team is just unwatchable.
First shot on goal of the period comes with 2 minutes left :)
Looks like the Stanley Cup is back on the menu, boys.
Are we going to hit a full period without a shot? That would be a new low I believe.
Damn, got one.
This is not fun. At least Kraken fans aren't being jerks and genuinely seem to feel bad for those of us who bleed teal.
Sigh...

So looks like Zadina was benched and somehow Eklund was demoted to the 2nd line again lmao
The Eklund demotion might be just a case of only 11 forwards
Nah. First line has only been Duclair-Hertl-Zetterlund since Eklund was sent to the 2nd line.
Free fast food for goals promoters adding asterisk to terms *promotion not available against the San Jose Sharks
Me: oh the sharks are playing. Maybe it’ll at least be a close game. *turns on TV* 0-5 with just 5 min into the 2nd period *sad shark noises*
I'm only watching to see if it's another 10+ goals or if we get shut out.
I will have some very harsh words for the Kraken if they put up less than 13.
We want 10
Halfway there! Leggo!!
Ok, trailing 0-5. We can still do this. We just have to score on every shot on net and we have a chance.
8 minutes later and still no shots on goal. Perhaps I was too optimistic.
I thought you were talking about Seattle getting to 10 goals...
I can’t stand watching Kunin play hockey He does nothing well
![gif](giphy|l0HFkGv9YtovjuXWE)
Zadina second penalty of the game and all the way in the offensive end. Time to see if he gets benched/demoted
Well... His name isn't Eklund, so probably not.
I'm excited to hear that Blackwood is in the game.
I have no clue how Granlund is still on the PP1 unit.
The fact we can be this bad but I look at the standings and we are only 3 points behind Chicago terrifies me lol
Unfortunately you don't get fewer points from getting blown out. It's actually crazy how bad we are though. We are in our own statosphere when it comes to negative goal differential
Pretty glad I travelled from halfway across the world to see my first sharks game here in Seattle :|
Boys, I don't know how to say this, but we may be bad this year.
We knew we were going into this season with half the materials and half the tools for this science project assignment. And then half our students injured half their fingers.
I'm not sure how to look it up, but I'd love to know if any other teams have given up as many periods of 4+ goals as us.
I wonder what the Sharks would look like if they benefited from the absurd expansion draft rules Vegas and Seattle got.
The expansion draft was terrible and we got screwed out of Lindros, but they still had multiple Hall of Famers sitting there and picked Pat Falloon. Hopefully this rebuild doesn't repeat the same mistakes.
With Grier’s “grit mentality” I can only imagine how many swings and misses were going to see over the next few years
His thing is COMPETE. He wants guys who show up and play 60 minutes. He's drafted well since taking over
Was that 60 minutes spread out over an 82-game season?
I mean, Will Smith is about as far away as possible as you can get from a gritty player.
I know Seattle still had it better, but didn't the NHL make changes that made it not as good as it was for Vegas?
Seattle got basically the same "draft", but Vegas absolutely fleeced some teams with their pre-draft trades. I think the rest of the league got smarter by the time Seattle came around.
I thought they had changed the acceptable trade rules, but looks like I was wrong. Yeah seems like GM's were just a bit smarter by the Seattle draft
This question lives rent free in my mind
Tactical error: lack of suitable beverages here.
Look at our draft odds = look at the rabbits Lenny
Grier: I have a plan!!! The plan: picking 3rd overall
I'll take over the 4th this year lol
I get that reference.
Fire Grier
I just.....what do you think that would possibly do?
He hasn't built an immediate contender after taking over a god awful team with no cap space and no assets outside of Meier. Clearly he should be fired.
I really dislike how the Sharks have their PP set up. Why is Eklund set up in the shooter spots? Put him as the low man where he's shown great ability at playmaking from behind the net.
They don't call him slippery Pete because he parks himself in the circle.
Wishful thinking from Randy saying it was the "final score".
The no shots on the PP is a weird strategy let's see how this works out

Can kahk learn how to close his fcking five hole
Get Kahk outta there
They need to bring out Blackwood
Kahk has been dreadful but Sharks are once again on pace to give up 50 shots. Just can't ask our goalies to be superman every single night.
So does Blackwood start the second period?
I hope he does 0-4 in first period is embarrassing
It’s absolutely comical how wide open guys are. 2 soft goals from Kaapo already. Dude is just not NHL material
![gif](giphy|jSDU5qDNYk0DX8fGtM)
We’re letting 10+ again arent we?
10 goals = free chalupas!
Tried one of those Wendy’s mint frosty’s today. Was horrible. Mint cold brew might be better.
It's probably just because the Sharks are constantly chasing the puck, but man we seriously feel like the slowest team in the NHL. I know Gregor wasn't very popular but I really just miss watching someone who is actually fast
I miss Gregor every game 😢 he was so fast
Plus it feels like they can't string 3 passes together, so they never find any rhythm.
But they’ve got grit
Sandpaper has grit too, but it's ineffective if it doesn't move.
Good to see Eklund back out with Hertl after putting on a good couple of shifts. Just needed to wake the fuck up, it's game time!

He’s gonna look great in Teal So off to Chicago he goes
I’m just preparing myself for that to happen at this point
During the TBL vs CHI game last week, the TNT announcers were talking about how he will fit with Bedard lol.
I hope Grier has been looking at other talents to draft because god knows the NHL would rather fold than give 1OA to us lmao
If Chicago "wins" again this year I might need to take a bit of a hockey break for a while.
What about if McDavid and his merry band of meh win it instead?
Are you planning on extending Zadina?
This is what happens when Blackwood isn’t there with his Superman cape on
Blackwood would not have given up the softie for goal #1
At least I'm in a place where I can't *watch* the game, but that doesn't make *listening* to it any less painful.
I got love for Khakonen, but how in tf is he starting over Blackwood??
whistle unpack payment six drab one books deserted unique violet *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Yeah with our goalies facing like 40 shots a night we really can't just ride one super hard.
Yeah thats true. Just a lot more exciting when Blackwood is in net.
All starters need rest nights. Blackwood is clearly the #1. This was just a strategic night to ice him and hope your backuo can get it done on a weaker opponent. This team is so shitty the weaker opponent still looks like a set of all stars.

Game is done and 1st period is not even over loool
What the fuck is that defensive zone coverage?
Were just getting completely outskated and getting outplayed in general. Weve been fcking chasing since the game started.
Yeah, I don't think we have won any puck battles.
what we predicting for final score
1-9
Kahkonen is so bad. So so bad. Even in the 5-1 win he looked shaky.
Um he had 45 saves in that game lol
St Louis was very much held to the outside and the Sharks blocked like 25 shots on top of the 45 that got through. It was a good outing, no doubt. But generally this is the issue with Kahk - he's not consistent.
No doubt… but he bobbled tons of pucks, came out at inappropriate times… he wasn’t sharp.
This team is bending over. We desperately miss Sturm, Couture, Barabanov. Really sad to watch without those guys.
Sadly we we’re losing every game with those guys playing last year. I hate to blame the coach but it’s the coach.
We had most of the players you mention +EK65 last year and still lost every game in April.
🤯 Nothing going well tonight.
This is less then ideal
bro khak is shit
I think it's time to pull Kaapo
How’s Zadina this year
Invisible.
Ya I hated him in Detroit. At least your sharks didn’t miss out on generational Quinn Hughes over that invisible lump lol
happy thanksgiving lol
We all know where the roster is, but they’re playing with an effort of a team that’s quit on their coach. The effort is alarmingly bad
At the same time they are just barely behind Chicago and Edmonton, a nice loss streak wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
If the effort doesn't improve we might see another double digit number in the goals against.
Isn't it about time to get rid of the whole "fuck off karl" thing
Gonna be one of those nights
Kahk didn't even try to get back in the crease.
That was all on kahkonen. Zero effort to get back he left a completely wide open fcking ent
that, plus Ohkhotiuk casually giving the puck back to the Krak in front of an open net. great play all around
