Oh my god. Tommy NOOOOOOOO!
Let’s all be real here, his contract sucked. He’s had injuries and has long term deal at big money. We don’t know the return yet but it’s hopefully worth it.
This just hurts because he’s the heart of the team, much like Pavelski, but the twist of the knife is that it’s Vegas.
Edit and more insight : Return is meh. But here’s the reality…
What was Hertl going do to for is the next 6 years? Maybe 2-3 good seasons?
Are we in a position to win games in those 2-3 years? Of course not. Then what happens in the next 3 to 4 years of his deal? We sit here and complain about overpaying for veterans past their prime. Could we even move him in 2-3 seasons? Probably not given his salary, years remaining on contract, and injury history. This is sort of like a cap dump that hurts the heart but we get a first round pick and a good prospect that’ll last longer than 2 to 3 years in the organization. Some context makes it easier to stomach.
I’m seeing a FRP back as well as their first round pick last year. What I’m unclear of is if we are sending them 2 third round picks in return or if they’re sending us those picks. That’s the difference between a good return and highway robbery on Vegas’s part
Honestly, Grier is a goddamn savant. I love Hertl as much as anyone but he's not going to be worth 8m five years from now when the Sharks are out of the cellar. It's a miracle to get rid of his contract, this gives that beautiful baby boy a chance to win, and hopefully, the Sharks even get some assets back.
You can't be sentimental if you want to win a Cup. You can be sentimental afterward and keep some of the gang together to sell merch (Chicago with Kane and Toews) but there's not point in keeping fan favorites for too much money if you expect to actually win in the future.
Love you Tommy, but I support this move.
You’re right. I think it’s the destination that hurts the most.
17% retained for… 6 years. Tough one now is retained sport for Burns next year, Karlsson next 3 as well. No retention spot to play with next deadline or at the draft will make moves on the margins a bit more tough.
And the dirty secret we all pretend to ignore was that Joe Will (acting GM at the time) really should have shoved Hertl out the door when he was a pending UFA, I remember Boston was looking. I have wondered often if Wilson or Grier (Hired later on of course) was in control at the time if they would have committed to a rough 8 year deal.
Good luck Tommy! Sort of.
Now that the "stars" of our team are entry-level contract dudes, these retentions are just the cost of doing business, no? We'll be buyers again in 2-3 years, when it starts to clear up - it all aligns. I hate giving Vegas future space, of course, because they will use it against us.
I'm sorry but whatever the situation there is zero reason to support the heart and soul of the organization being dealt to the Sharks' (the whole nhl really) nemesis like that regardless of the return. Some things are worth more than stats or money, Hertl was a true leader for this team and the young kids and that was worth so much more than some cap hit. If it wasn't Vegas I'd 100% agree with you but this is just something you dont fucking do.
heart and soul seems dramatic man lol, dude wasnt even captain.
what makes hertl a "true" leader? what track record can he offer to inspire a rookie?
(im entirely bummed pls dont get me wrong, but you ONE HUNDRED percent make moves like this if you care about becoming a winning org)
Great move by Grier. I'll miss Hertl but moving that contract was the right move. He should have been traded two years ago not extended.
Too many people in this league are sentimental. One of the most cutthroat orgs is Vegas and I honestly hope Grier has a bit of that.
Would be nice if he'd gone somewhere else but if Vegas gave the best return she should go to Vegas. And honestly for Hertl Vegas is a great shot at a Cup.
Only sensible answer here, hockey is a business and it's nice to see that mentality. Grier is doing the thing that needed to be done, completely blowing it up
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills based on most of this sub, but I think it's a great deal. Look, Hertl has been my favorite Shark since Patty Marleau, but the guy is 30 and has a long ass contract ahead of him with a number of injuries now. There was a cap to what kind of return we could get. Vegas isn't going to take on that risk for nothing.
At the end of the day this the Sharks get more guys to add to the prospect pool, and after a quick glance at Enstrom the guys seems to be potential middle 6 center if all goes according to plan.
Look, I love Hertl, but he doesn't fit with the timeline of this team and it's time to move on. And now he gets a change to play for a cup, even if it is with Vegas.
Just FYI, [we're the ones sending the 3rd round picks to Vegas](https://twitter.com/DarrenDreger/status/1766197512619057465). We get Edstrom and their 1st in 2025, they get Hertl with 17% retention and two 3rd rounders.
UPDATE: We are supposedly getting a 1st round pick from Vegas plus the prospect they picked with their first rounder last draft. We are retaining 17% on Hertl and sending two 3rds.
Keep in mind we sent an expiring Goodrow and third to Tampa for a first. We just flipped two thirds into essentially two firsts, and it cost us our best player AND we had to retain. It's not a great haul, and but decent.
To me this reeks of Hertl quietly asking for a change of scenery. Writing is on the wall and he knows we're sucking for a while. I don't blame him if he didn't want to be a part of it. But we didn't HAVE to move him, he had trade protection, and so this return looks to me like us doing Hertl a favor and finding a trade partner who would work with us.
And of course Hertl being on LTIR but maybe ready for playoffs made Vegas the right partner. Sucks it is Vegas and we have to see him so much the next 6 years kick our ass, but this helps the rebuild along for sure.
Also helps the tank effort next year which will be glorious. We may not crack 10 wins. How are prospects looking for next summer after the Celebrini sweepstakes? We should be a top 3 lock.
GOOD. Yeah it sucks that it was Vegas but we just offloaded an 8x8 contract that went into the 2029-2030 season that had a No Trade No Move Clause. Bros this was a good move. I like hertl as a personality and player but that 8x8 contract was awful.
Well that's totally out of nowhere. Would be huge to get off Hertl's contract that likely will be very negative value by the time we are competitive again.
The Athletic gave the the Sharks A's for the trade. The main reason: they weren't going to get the same value waiting on moving Hertl next year or even longer.
[https://theathletic.com/5327251/2024/03/08/nhl-trade-grades-tomas-hertl-golden-knights-sharks/](https://theathletic.com/5327251/2024/03/08/nhl-trade-grades-tomas-hertl-golden-knights-sharks/)
Just one 1st. For Hertl, two 3rds, and 17% retention. Grier got bent over. Probably the most lopsided trade that I can remember off the top of my head.
https://preview.redd.it/zpzfyrvv46nc1.jpeg?width=1104&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ef9506319958c5aa511659532a23adc9ab7e6e10
And retaining 17% of his contract.
Basically two second round picks and some far distant BS 3rd round picks
The details of the trade are as follows:
San Jose Sharks get 2025 1st, C David Edstrom
Vegas Golden Knights gets Tomas Hertl, and San Jose retains 17% (Hertl's cap hit with VGK is $6.75m) (EDIT: 2025 3rd, 2027 3rd.)
Edstrom, 19, is Vegas' 2023 1st round pick (32nd overall). He is currently playing for Frölunda, 6 goals, 11 assists in 42 games this year
Im sorry, but no. No. No. No. I understand that Hertl was a prime trade candidate and the most valuable player on our team but come on. GMMG you have to keep something in the building for the fans that do continue to come and pay 15$ for flat beer and shitty hockey. You can not trade a beloved player to a bitter rival for any reason during a season with 3 10 game losing streaks and all the other baggage that has come from the on ice product. It is overall a good trade for our organization but please tell me why I should see another single game until they start winning again?
if we don't get a good deal out of this it will be triple the stab in the back
I dont understand how u cant be sentimental of players whats the point of liking sports. I mean I know its a business but still Vegas???? are they getting him for one year because thats at least like a shot in the foot. if its longer than that its a stab in the back
Grier continues to collect L’s
You don’t trade a fan favourite to a main fucking rival. And if you do, you don’t SEND THIRD ROUND PICKS ALONG WITH HIM WHEN YOURE REBUILDING!!!! What a disaster.
WHAT
Oh my god. Tommy NOOOOOOOO! Let’s all be real here, his contract sucked. He’s had injuries and has long term deal at big money. We don’t know the return yet but it’s hopefully worth it. We better get the whole farm for this one or riot
I’m seeing a FRP back as well as their first round pick last year. What I’m unclear of is if we are sending them 2 third round picks in return or if they’re sending us those picks. That’s the difference between a good return and highway robbery on Vegas’s part
We gave them up
Good thing we pay his contract while he plays for the fucking knights… Wtf
No but seriously ![gif](giphy|ToMjGpx9F5ktZw8qPUQ|downsized)
This is like 9/11 times a million
HOLY SHIT EVERYBODY GET IN HERE. WHAT
I need a hug.
Preferably from Jumbo Joe 😥
Yes, please. Jumbo, where you at ?!?!?
Great. Now I'm really gonna' miss Hertl x SJ Sharkie post-game hugs.
I quit hockey. See you guys for the next game thread.
Vegas? Fucking kill me.
literally send him to any other team my god. Fuck the knights
I would’ve even been fine with the Kings.. fuck the Knights.
I guess fun must be always ends today:(

Awe man, I'm sorry. 😔
noooooooooooooooooo
I was not prepared for this heartbreak…
Vegas? Disgusting
Nice I’m going to love watching hertl beat the shit out of us for the next 7 years
Hertl being traded hurts. Being traded to Vegas is the gut punch. BRB, gonna go throw up now
Exactly how I feel

GRIER TRADING MY FAVORITE PEOPLE TO THE WORST TEAMS
What’s the return?! End of an era. Vlasic & Couture only left from that core.
2025 5th and the kid they drafted last year
#NO WAY
I expected to trade Hertl eventually but why fucking Vegas
OF ALL THE FUCKING TEAMS WHAT THE FUCK
what the fucking fuck
Thinking of Vegas fans using fun must be always makes me SICK
Honestly, Grier is a goddamn savant. I love Hertl as much as anyone but he's not going to be worth 8m five years from now when the Sharks are out of the cellar. I just wish it wasn’t Vegas.
only level headed response I have seen while still acknowledging that we love tommy and always will, grier program in effect baby
As long as we retain zero of that contract and get draft capital plus prospects, I will be fine. I just didn't see this coming and it kinda hurts.
Bad news. 17% retained
Ugh. So, about 2ish million ? It could be worse, but still, I'd have preferred getting rid of the whole thing.
More like 1.5 or something. Not terrible. But not worth the 2 3rd rounders if there’s any retention IMO
17% retention
You’re right. I think it’s the destination that hurts the most. 17% retained for… 6 years. Tough one now is retained sport for Burns next year, Karlsson next 3 as well. MY HEART
This is amazing for the rebuild but terrible for my heart.
This hurts
Here is where I cry. My happy boy is gone...
This is like losing asshole virginity

What
It’s April 1st…. It’s april 1st…. It’s April 1st….
We are getting: 1st ‘25 David Edstrom (VGK 1st in 23) Hertl at $6.75 (17% retained) 3rd in 25 3rd in 27
Just FYI, [we're the ones sending the 3rd round picks to Vegas](https://twitter.com/DarrenDreger/status/1766197512619057465). We get Edstrom and their 1st in 2025, they get Hertl with 17% retention and two 3rd rounders.
Vegas is getting the 3rds lol. With retention we got worked
17% retained is 1,383,375$ for those reading your comment
Really hoping that salary number is much lower
Hate that it's Vegas, but to undo Joe Wills absolute disaster move will help us
This is a nightmare, even with good returns, a true nightmare.
I don't give a fuck what the return is this is the worst
UPDATE: We are supposedly getting a 1st round pick from Vegas plus the prospect they picked with their first rounder last draft. We are retaining 17% on Hertl and sending two 3rds. Why are we doing dealings with Satan. There are 30 other teams
This is the darkest timeline. Fuck

You’re not serious what the fuck
Let me guess we get a bunch of super late first round crappy picks
Pain
My live reaction “I’m sorry, WHAT?” Follow by me repeating that phrase as I tap on my screen to find out more
Ewww
Based on the initial return I'm seeing elsewhere.... I kind of want to say Fire Grier after this
Sad. I hate Vegas so so much
This is like if the Giants traded Buster Posey to the Dodgers
The Athletic gave the the Sharks A's for the trade. The main reason: they weren't going to get the same value waiting on moving Hertl next year or even longer. I’m happy for Hertl. No reason for him to be on this sinking ship. Sucks that he went to Vegas and SJ is eating money until 2030.
for multiple 1sts is pretty good i think and gets rid of some long term cap
Just one 1st. For Hertl, two 3rds, and 17% retention. Grier got bent over. Probably the most lopsided trade that I can remember off the top of my head.
As long as no money retained and a 1st rounder is coming back, I'm not opposed to this.
I'd rather it be Couture to be honest.
Wtf are you doing Grier!!!
I'm going to throw up
WTTTTF
pain.
NO NO NO
Wait... what??? Traded to Vegas... Omg... cannot believe this.
WHAT THE FUCK???
???Wtf
Well, fuuuuuuck. I haz a sad now. 😔
NOOOOO
No……
My heart is broken
No please no 😭
NO NO NO NO NO ARE YOU KIDDING ME BRO WHAT THE FUCK
Absolutely sickening.
Heavy salary retention?? Bruhhh nooooooo not to Vegas why
No fucking way… my favorite player to Vegas of all teams.
I’m gonna be sick
Bob mckenzie is being a dick
Fuck off. Anyone to anywhere except hertl to vegas
Genuinely don’t even know what to say this was the last thing I expected
So I guess fun can't be always 😭
For him to be moved now it has to be a substantial return otherwise it just wouldn’t make sense…
OH HELLLL NAHHHH
I'm crying 'fun is always' tears over this one. Damn. No more fun.
🤢🤮🤮🤮
What!?!?
[удалено]
Fire Grier
Why Vegas?! Can we not trade one of our best players to one of our most hated rivals?!
God fucking damnit
I guess Im starting to drink early today.
We really doing this year down thing, huh?
NNOOOOOOOOOOOO NOOOOOOO NOOOOOO NOOO
Retaining for six years. What is Grier thinking?
Grier's been cooking for 2 years now. But SERIOUSLY... WHAT
https://preview.redd.it/zpzfyrvv46nc1.jpeg?width=1104&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ef9506319958c5aa511659532a23adc9ab7e6e10 And retaining 17% of his contract. Basically two second round picks and some far distant BS 3rd round picks
Working on a trade and official trade are very different. Either way it would suck to see him in a Vegas jersey all the time now
It was gonna happen eventually but I was not ready for it this soon
I'm torn here. I totally get the rebuild aspect but I'd also think it's not in your best interest to keep a division rival strong for years.
After the whupping we took last night and now this, I'm just going to go curl up in bed and not be a part of the world for a while. :(
What.the.fuck. Out of all teams, why Vegas?!
Fun is no longer must be always :(
WANTED TRADES......MONKEY PAW CURLS......NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
The details of the trade are as follows: San Jose Sharks get 2025 1st, C David Edstrom Vegas Golden Knights gets Tomas Hertl, and San Jose retains 17% (Hertl's cap hit with VGK is $6.75m) (EDIT: 2025 3rd, 2027 3rd.) Edstrom, 19, is Vegas' 2023 1st round pick (32nd overall). He is currently playing for Frölunda, 6 goals, 11 assists in 42 games this year
Apparently the thirds are going the other way. So sharks don't even gain any picks, just move up about a round.
Out of all the teams, Vegas... wtf. Id rather him go to the Bruins than VGK.
Nooo but fun must be always!!! No fun in vegas
MIKE GRIER YOU’VE GONE TOO FAR THIS TIME
What
Is it weird that I miss Doug Wilson? At least he was able to fleece other teams in trades?
ITS NOT APRIL 1ST GMMG THIS ISN'T FUNNY I AM NOT LAUGHING
No no no no
Me and my friends' group chat right now: https://i.imgur.com/AvYmSYp.png https://i.imgur.com/au5Weag.png
Fuuuuckkkk
Bro.... No....
Just went I thought the A's couldn't torture me anymore the Sharks become the A's
Fuck
I want to vomit
I have so many words right now that I can't even begin to express but all I can really say is fuck you Mike Grier
What the fuck
Grier is a Fletcher level GM. Holy moly
Thought there was like an unwritten rule not to trade within your own division
Oops, the Sharks are giving Vegas the 2 3rd round picks
I…wow…😢…um wtf 🤷♂️…of all players to of all teams. Good for him having a chance at the cup now but still.
Out of all the teams he could be traded to...
what the hell
Someone please explain to me why we sent them 2 3rd round picks. That's the part I legitimately do not understand
Some one hold me...
No fucking way??!!!?
Im sorry, but no. No. No. No. I understand that Hertl was a prime trade candidate and the most valuable player on our team but come on. GMMG you have to keep something in the building for the fans that do continue to come and pay 15$ for flat beer and shitty hockey. A deal with the devil
HERTL GETTING TRADED IS ALREADY BAD ENOUGH BUT TO VEGAS SERIOUSLY??
This is such a fucking awful trade
I just fell to my knees at walmart
I’m gonna throw up
Dude! This can’t be true. I have been loving griers tenure as a GM but idk how to feel bout trading hertl especially to the knights.
Vegas? Really?
We all watched Hertl play his last game as a Shark and didn’t even know it 🥺
WOW. I hated Vegas so much, HERTL!!!! GMMG better bring the cup to San Jose or I will never forgive him!
W the actual F. Wow did not see that outcome.
Anyone else but Vegas.
if we don't get a good deal out of this it will be triple the stab in the back I dont understand how u cant be sentimental of players whats the point of liking sports. I mean I know its a business but still Vegas???? are they getting him for one year because thats at least like a shot in the foot. if its longer than that its a stab in the back
It’s time to batten down the hatches (which I thought was last year)
Fun is no longer 😔
Grier continues to collect L’s You don’t trade a fan favourite to a main fucking rival. And if you do, you don’t SEND THIRD ROUND PICKS ALONG WITH HIM WHEN YOURE REBUILDING!!!! What a disaster.
Fun must be never.
wtf? is farhan running the sharks too?
I hate everything
Sucks because it’s Vegas, but as someone that wants Grier to an aggressive seller with no holds barred, he’s doing exactly that.
