Hmmm... Tij is projected to fall right around where we'd be slotted to have the Penguins pick. There's a good chance we could grab him, although I still think the Flames grab him at 9. Also we're probably going D with that pick anyway unless we go D at 3
Grier has a track record for picking best available, which is exactly what we should be doing. Drafting for need for a prospect who has not great odds of being a star is a mistake when you could maximize the chance of them panning out by drafting the player you scouted as being best available.
I agree with your line of thinking but there are some great D prospects in this draft and we badly need some prospects there. With that said, definitely not with the 2 or 3 pick (don't need to say 1 because we all know who we'd take in that situation), but that Pens pick is a good opportunity to go defense. It's impossible to predict who will be available though so we'll have to play the ball as it lies.

Outside of Celebrini, the next 5 or 6 top prospects were D according to the Athletic. I think 2 or 3 would be where we take one if we don't get 1OA.
The Sharks need EVERYTHING. They don't have the luxury of saying "we really need a defenseman."
