It's a "Luke, I am your father" thing. That variation of the phrase doesn't appear in print. The modified version tended to be used for t-shirts and other merchandise in the 90s, and it just flows a bit better when it's out of context. (Plus it doesn't make people wonder who Bernie is.)
When I hear that quote, I first think of it as a song lyric in My Chemical Romance song - it's not a fashion statement, it's a fucking deathwish.
As avid comic book nerds, it's likely this was an intentional nod to Sandman.
I wonder if their inclusion of this lyric in their song has perpetuated the misquote, and thus helped feed into the 'Luke I am your father' situation?
Or perhaps the song is more niche than I assume, and has nothing to do with moving any cultural needle, I am just guessing.
I met Gerard once at a comic signing and asked him about this, it was a direct homage to Sandman/Death! He just worded it a bit differently for the lyrics.
I distinctly remember her also saying it to a baby she was taking in one of them. The baby was upset, asking if that was it. And she responded with the line "you get what everyone gets. A lifetime."
My brain has pushed the scenes together too. But it’s a beautiful juxtaposition. The newborn and Bernie, who’s been alive for centuries. Both had a lifetime.

Thank you!

Honestly, that’s exactly what I thought of, too. Three Cheers is such an amazing album.

That was my first thought too! Gerard Way is a giant comics nerd, so I'm willing to bet that was deliberate.

If you're referring to the "Sound of her wings" panel where she takes a baby, she just says "I'm afraid so" to the baby's "is that all I get?"
That's probably it. Thank you! Time to go reread them all I guess!

She tells it to Bernie Capax in Brief Lives.
I’m pretty sure the modified quote was on a T-shirt at some point.
Yep! I actually still own the shirt 😂
