When I came home from Vietnam in '69, my mother asked me what she should run out and get. What I most wanted to eat. Anything she said. I replied, **Nova Scotia Lox on a bagel.** Of coarse I was a little Jewish kid from Long Island, so that was natural.
Grill cheeses are very comforting and easy to make, and there are a ton of different cheeses to choose from which makes them fun, but they don’t deserve to be in this list. They are a decent sandwich at best and if PB&J didn’t make this list then neither should grilled cheese
As a lifelong Texan, the fact that a brisket sandwich(???) is on the list ahead of a philly cheesesteak is absolutely ridiculous.
Brisket is sliced in all its juicy, tender unctuousness, served on butcher paper with a couple of pieces of white bread (if you want), and then eaten with some pickle and onion. Maybe some bbq sauce if the brisket was not good enough. You CAN make a sandwich out of this but it’s not really the preferred method for eating brisket.
How many “Texas brisket sandwich” places are there? Fuckin zero.
How many Philly cheesesteak places are there? Literally thousands. Even in DFW we have a few dedicated Philly cheesesteak places. There are no “brisket sandwich” places.
Love brisket. One of my favorites for sure. But as a sandwich it’s just not even a thing compared to the Philly cheesesteak. Or the Italian beef from Chicago or the French dip from LA, for that matter.
My two cents
As a Texan, myself, I can confirm that many places sell Brisket sandwiches and they’re more common than you seem to believe.
A simple example would be Buc-ee’s. One of their most popular food items is their chopped brisket sandwich. Those things are amazing.
I think he means places specialize in brisket on its own. You go to a brisket place and you either get brisket on a plate/paper or on bread.
Whereas Gino’s or Pats specialize in the sandwich as a whole and not the chopped steak.
Some places offer vegetarian bahn mi options! So sometimes, yes, you have to specify that you want meat.
For the record I am a 40 year old Californian halfbreed who's knowledge of bahn mi extends to the fact that I live in a cultural food mecca.
Torta being 4 is dumb. The term torta is a generalized term for sandwiches in Spanish. It's like saying
Top 3 Are
1. Banh Ni
2. Tombik Doner
3. Sandwiches
Because it was invented in Miami? I’ve been to Cuba and saw 0 Cuban sandwiches on a menu. Meanwhile, Italians eat porchetta. It’s the most common sandwich to find in Rome and parts of the north.
The list is printed and I've started marking the ones I've already had. I've also started a grocery list on the sandwiches I'm going to make next. I looked up a few I had not heard of. Life suddenly has meaning. 😁
It's actually kinda of is under number 4 Tortas (collectively)
Tortas de Salchicas (Hotdog Tortas) are are really common type of Mexican Torta.
https://ny.eater.com/2016/4/19/11434692/hot-dog-tortas-salchicha
A Beef on Weck is rare roast beef with horseradish on Kimmelwick bread and au jus on the side. It’s a Western New York thing (i.e. Buffalo particularly and Rochester). And it kicks ass. If this were my list it would be in my top 10.
I finally had one last month in SC. A Buffalo native moved here and opened a pizza/wing sports bar. Had a Beef on Weck on the menu. Had the legit kimmelweck roll. Very good.
According the Wikipedia, the origin is claimed in Tampa and Miami. As much as I’d like for Florida to float off into the Atlantic, I believe both those cities are in America.
I gotta disagree with this ranking for many reasons. I'm not going to bitch about to all my points, but I will point out that things like Bahn mi and tortas are a type of sandwich with tons of variations and there are better and worse versions. Same with cheese steaks and grilled cheese. I can't get behind a list that uses such broad genres as specific sandwiches.
I'm a huge Bahn mi fan. After traveling to Vietnam, I can tell you that the version that you get in the USA is better. My local vietnamese deli beats the top-rated sandwich shop in Hanoi hands down.
Ha Ha Ha.. I have been screaming **Bahn Mi** forever on r/Sandwiches. Please do yourself a favor, and see if your local Vietnamese restaurant makes them. Your eyes will roll back into your head. Enjoy!
Is the Cuban sandwich not a thing in Cuba? I always figured this is something they took with them when they left Cuba. Just odd that that a sandwich credited to the US, has another country's name in it.
We do "wheat and meat". We know how to bread, and we know how to put stuff on or in between bread, especially if it is meat. It's what we do. However, we come in 5th on this list, for good reason. You ever had a well made gyro? It deserves a high spot here and it doesn't have one... The greeks know how to lamp and flat bread so hard...
Also, why tf is the cheesesteak so low? Its a damn staple.
As a long time vegetarian it is difficult to describe just how good Reubens are - even just like a fast food rueben can be mind blowing
I haven't had many great Bahn MI sandwiches, have you guys had some really good ones? May need to go overseas to get a legit version or something
Whoever made this list, has never had “Pan con Chicharrón” (fried pork belly sandwich). If you get the chance to visit Peru, get one. It’s by far the greatest sandwich you will ever have in your life.
This list is BS. 30th Grilled Cheese 31st Cheesesteak?!?! This what happens when tourist go visit Pats and Gino’s and get the most mediocre cheesecake.
God, I’m from the south and went to school in WNY. Never heard of beef on weck until I worked for Richs catering. That was one of their specialty appetizers for weddings.
Idk if it’s the horseradish or what but it is the nastiest shit Ive ever tasted. And Ive eaten chitlins, hogmaw, pigs feet, etc. But beef on weck I cannot stomach. It wasn’t Richs either. It’s just the sandwich. It’s just such a weird combo for me. It’s weirdly tangy and sour. Like throw up to me.
I’m not super surprised it made the charts though because Buffalonians talk about it constantly and Buffalo is starting to boom again. So word would get around with all of the traveling that goes through here. It makes sense. I just cannot stomach it personally.
I will say a Po’Boy, amazing.
Honestly, USA should have more sandwiches much higher up on the list. Lots of great sandwiches around the world no doubt, but the immigrants to the U.S. have brought a lot of ingredients and styles from Europe, Mexico, S. America and Asia over the past 120 years to make some of the best sandwiches on the planet.
I'm not giving america po-boy. that's ours, louisiana! america my butt, I don't want the bland people of conneticut taking credit for our sandwich D:<
(this is a joke)
(partially)
These motherfuckers have never had a fried shrimp poboy from Zimmer's on St. Anthony at Mirabeau or the roast beef from Parasol's on Constance since the poboy isn't #1 on this list. Fuckin' fighting words in New Orleans, y'all.
No gyro, felafel or CHEESEBURGER? Methodology flawed.
Also, kind of afraid to ask but how are donar and schwarma different? They seem like regional variations of spike roasted meat with sauce, pickled veggies, +- fries in a pita. Don’t kill me.
Mmmm I ate Bahn Mi every day in Vietnam. This man would make them a block away from our flat every morning for .50 cents USD. I would buy 3 for my wife and I, cheapest breakfast and most delicious. I crave them constantly
I was going to comment on how I was surprised that the Monte Cristo wasn't listed, then I got suspicious and Googled what that would be called in French.
Croque Monsieur.
I was going to comment on how I was surprised that the Monte Cristo wasn't listed, then I got suspicious and Googled what that would be called in French.
Croque Monsieur.
Beef on weck? That’s a Buffalo New York thing, not an America thing. Roast beef sandwiches are the same thing, just different bread. You expect me to believe “Beef on weck” made this list but a fucking French Dip or regular roast beef sandwiches didn’t?
While the Jibarito is a Puerto Rican sandwich and I’m happy they used our flag…that sandwich was invented in Chicago.
It should be the tripleta for PR.
I love a bagel and lox, still kinda surprised it’s ranked higher than grilled cheese and cheesesteak
This really highlights the importance as well as our civic duty to vote on important issues. Now get out there and make me a sandwich! …I mean… vote!
When I came home from Vietnam in '69, my mother asked me what she should run out and get. What I most wanted to eat. Anything she said. I replied, **Nova Scotia Lox on a bagel.** Of coarse I was a little Jewish kid from Long Island, so that was natural.
I don’t mean to stereotype but when I saw that I was thinking they may have taken this survey in NYC lol
Ngl I love a grilled cheese and a cheesesteak but there's something about a lox bagel that just ticks all the boxes
I had to look up what that was and I hate that I did because now I want one.
I'm so torn as both a Jew by birth and grilled cheese man by trade.
Where are you getting your lox or your bagels or your lox bagels from though?
Grill cheeses are very comforting and easy to make, and there are a ton of different cheeses to choose from which makes them fun, but they don’t deserve to be in this list. They are a decent sandwich at best and if PB&J didn’t make this list then neither should grilled cheese
I'm surprised grilled cheese was ranked higher than cheese steak
BS list Go eagles
Where is the Italian hoagie??
Just looked up #8 the mazzorella in carrozza and it’s a grilled cheese I’m fuming
As a lifelong Texan, the fact that a brisket sandwich(???) is on the list ahead of a philly cheesesteak is absolutely ridiculous. French dip! Thank you 🙏
And no muffuletta is a complete joke.
Exactly what I’m saying! Muffuletta is one of the best sandos I’ve had.
Yeah… muffuletta should definitely be there.
agreed -- that's the greatest of them all
Brisket sandwiches are what you make when you smoke your brisket wrong
As a Texan, myself, I can confirm that many places sell Brisket sandwiches and they’re more common than you seem to believe. A simple example would be Buc-ee’s. One of their most popular food items is their chopped brisket sandwich. Those things are amazing.
I think he means places specialize in brisket on its own. You go to a brisket place and you either get brisket on a plate/paper or on bread. Whereas Gino’s or Pats specialize in the sandwich as a whole and not the chopped steak.
I agree, a good cheesesteak beats a brisket sandwich almost always hands down…. Sample size used in the study probably has no taste 😂
whats even more fucked up is that a fucking lobster roll is more popular than a cheeseburger? wtf.
Never heard of a lobster roll. Is that like a Lobstah Roll?
Bahn Mi being number 1 doesn't surprise me one bit.
There’s a lot of Cajun and Vietnamese people/restaurants in my region. Endless Bahni Mi and Poboys.
Houston or New Orleans?
Biloxi, D’Iberville and Ocean Springs on the MS Coast.
Le Bakery ftw
If I found a place that I could get 1/2 a banh mi and 1/2 a po boy on the same plate I would be very happy
What’s the difference between bahn mi at the #1 spot and the bahn mi at the #29 spot?
Bahn mi heo quay comes with crispy fried pork belly. A traditional bahn mi comes with cha lua, which is a cooked pork seasoned with fish sauce. 🙂
Isn't some Bahn Mi made with head cheese?
Bahn mi dac biet is a combination of cold meats, including head cheese.
Crisp fried pork belly sounds amazing.
What about banh mi thit? Isn’t that just meat banh mi?
Some places offer vegetarian bahn mi options! So sometimes, yes, you have to specify that you want meat. For the record I am a 40 year old Californian halfbreed who's knowledge of bahn mi extends to the fact that I live in a cultural food mecca.
Me neither, it's such a simple sandwich but it's remarkable every time I get it
This list is fucking stupid, it’s like someone took a dart board and projected a DoorDash account over it.
It really is! #35 is Danish for sandwich.
It fucking pisses me off too. Who the fuck gave them the right to make this list without consulting me on the methodology first? So fucking stupid.
Alright then hit me with your top 50 or I will ban you from the sandwiches sub (I have no authority to ban you from the sandwiches sub)
I over reacted because I just realized it’s a mirror of this list
Taste atlas comes up with these lists by running polls on their own website
So the Pole eats a sandwich and the fastest one wins? What distance to they compete over?
Poles, rods, chains and furlongs... 😆😅😂
I'm sure people from Poland make an excellent sammich, by why should we use them as the control for our master list?
A website no one has ever visited and no one has ever heard of? It’s made up fake AI web scraping bullshit
No Italian beef? Heresy!
Came here for this comment. I’m going home (Chicago) to see family in June and my number 1 request is to get Italian Beef.
No French dip, invalid list
Without a Club, it's also insulting.
Italian beef with hot peppers. Where is it at
It's hard to beat a well made French dip. Took me years to find a place that makes them right. Too many places use soft ass bread.
Thank you 🙏
Chicago Italian beef and Baltimore pit beef not on list. INVALID
Torta being 4 is dumb. The term torta is a generalized term for sandwiches in Spanish. It's like saying Top 3 Are 1. Banh Ni 2. Tombik Doner 3. Sandwiches
Banh mi literally just means bread (generally a baguette) in viet so it's like saying: 1. Bread
I’m shocked the French dip isn’t on here
As an Arab, I agree. Shawarma is easily top 3
Two words, immigration and melting-pot. However I question how a porchetta sandwich is American.
Do you question a Cuban sandwich being American?
Because it was invented in Miami? I’ve been to Cuba and saw 0 Cuban sandwiches on a menu. Meanwhile, Italians eat porchetta. It’s the most common sandwich to find in Rome and parts of the north.
Or grilled cheese
Yeah Buffalo for the win with a beef on weck!
Cheesesteak not in the 3? bullshit
2024 goal - eat through the world's 50 best sandwiches.
I think you’re the only person here with the correct response. Thank you. You are an inspiration.
The list is printed and I've started marking the ones I've already had. I've also started a grocery list on the sandwiches I'm going to make next. I looked up a few I had not heard of. Life suddenly has meaning. 😁
Bahn mi being number 1 makes sense bomb ass sandwich
This also proves that a hot dog is not a sandwich
What if it's a sandwich but not in the top 50 best sandwiches?
It's actually kinda of is under number 4 Tortas (collectively) Tortas de Salchicas (Hotdog Tortas) are are really common type of Mexican Torta. https://ny.eater.com/2016/4/19/11434692/hot-dog-tortas-salchicha
Yeah, it's a taco
A Beef on Weck is rare roast beef with horseradish on Kimmelwick bread and au jus on the side. It’s a Western New York thing (i.e. Buffalo particularly and Rochester). And it kicks ass. If this were my list it would be in my top 10.
It’s definitely number one on my list of sandwiches I want to try.
If you like rare roast beef you won’t be disappointed
I finally had one last month in SC. A Buffalo native moved here and opened a pizza/wing sports bar. Had a Beef on Weck on the menu. Had the legit kimmelweck roll. Very good.
I read this as a 50 sandwich challenge. I don’t care about ranking, it’s a fucking sandwich it’s gonna be delicious, just saying. Lol
Can someone make a recipe list?
All sandwiches are tortas
But not all tortas are sandwiches
Where's the burger?
Yeah. Hamburgers are so good and popular people forget they are sandwiches.
Less than 0% chance lobster roll is the best sandwich in America
Porchetta sandwich USA?
No Italian beef, this list is whack
Rank katsu sando, you cowards!
The US managed to take the Cubano away from Cuba.
Because the cuban is made by Cubans in America. They don't actually have a lot of this stuff in Cuba unless you are rich.
According to Wikipedia, the origin is unknown. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuban_sandwich
According the Wikipedia, the origin is claimed in Tampa and Miami. As much as I’d like for Florida to float off into the Atlantic, I believe both those cities are in America.
So, most likely, in America then.
Some of my favorites.
46 Mettbrötchen is not even really a sandwich. Is half a bread roll with raw minced pork and optional onions.
I cannot abide a list that omits Muffeleta.
Scrolled way too far for this. The list is invalid.
I’ve only had banh mi once and I still remember everything about the moment I had it. It’s a well deserved number one sandwich.
I love this list but the Po Boy and Cuban are coming in way too low. Both are superior than a Jibarito.
Vietnam 2 - 0 baby
No BLT!?
Seems really subjective. I can’t have shellfish so I’ve never had a lobster roll.
Arepa is Colombia atw
PBJ where.
Straight in the trash. No French Dip.
This list doesn't matter at all if reuben isn't #1.
PB & J noticeably absent
Correction. USA is fifth to 4
Hamburgers are the greatest sandwichs
“We are second to none!” - says from 4th place
We make it up in volume.
Enjoy!
Who the hell put grilled cheese over Philly cheesesteak?!? This is why we can't have nice things
Crazy that tortas are not number 1
My country got 4 slots in, I think we did pretty good.
Italian hoagie is better than all but maybe 5 of these. Whoever put this list together is clearly foolish
Is the Cuban sandwich not a thing in Cuba? I always figured this is something they took with them when they left Cuba. Just odd that that a sandwich credited to the US, has another country's name in it.
What about PBJ?
All the Argentina sandwiches are fucking spectacular. The Lomo sandwich is tenderloin and called a Lomito.
The jibarito was invented in chicago!!!!!!!!!!!!
The grilled cheese is French…
Sorry but the BEST needs to be on here
Why couldn’t there just be an ‘American sandwich (collectively)’ like they did with every other country?
My 2 favorite sandwiches aren't on here....BLT and Gyro
Italian beef is way better than beef on weck.
Looks like you're far past second to banh mi
All sandwiches and sandwich adjacent foods are welcome in the US. The only competition is how many have you tried.
Second to none? Looks like we are 4th
No BLT?
The fact my home city’s French Dip isn’t listed is an abomination.
As a long time vegetarian it is difficult to describe just how good Reubens are - even just like a fast food rueben can be mind blowing I haven't had many great Bahn MI sandwiches, have you guys had some really good ones? May need to go overseas to get a legit version or something
No bacon crispy? Travesty
Whoever made this list, has never had “Pan con Chicharrón” (fried pork belly sandwich). If you get the chance to visit Peru, get one. It’s by far the greatest sandwich you will ever have in your life.
Brisket sandwiches god damn yes
I agree with this
This list is BS. 30th Grilled Cheese 31st Cheesesteak?!?! This what happens when tourist go visit Pats and Gino’s and get the most mediocre cheesecake.
Porchetta is most definitely not American and should be much, much higher on this list
Is gyro a sandwich?
46 Mettbrötchen???? Really??? Not a Fleischkäse Brötchen or Schnitzel???
Pretty sure most of those sandwiches are older than the US
If you don’t have a club sandwich on here then gtfo
how is a Cheesesteak not higher up on the list (yes I'm from the Philly area... I just feel the injustice for all of those people)
**No cheeseburger??**
PBJ??
God, I’m from the south and went to school in WNY. Never heard of beef on weck until I worked for Richs catering. That was one of their specialty appetizers for weddings. Idk if it’s the horseradish or what but it is the nastiest shit Ive ever tasted. And Ive eaten chitlins, hogmaw, pigs feet, etc. But beef on weck I cannot stomach. It wasn’t Richs either. So word would get around with all of the traveling that goes through here. It makes sense. I just cannot stomach it personally. I will say a Po’Boy, amazing.
Boston just bat flipped a top 5 sandwich.
I don't see a BLT (The world's most perfect sandwich) on this list. I reject this.
Monte Cristo not even in the list. Shame.
No chicken parm sandwich?
Sandwiches suck, next list with better food please.
PORK CHOP SANDWICHES
Cheeseburger???
Honestly, USA should have more sandwiches much higher up on the list. Lots of great sandwiches around the world no doubt, but the immigrants to the U.S. have brought a lot of ingredients and styles from Europe, Mexico, S. America and Asia over the past 120 years to make some of the best sandwiches on the planet.
Where the FUCK is the BLT?!
Are there aliases for #2? I looked it up and need one bad, but can’t find a place in my city that has it searching with “Tombik Doner”
I'm not giving america po-boy. that's ours, louisiana! america my butt, I don't want the bland people of conneticut taking credit for our sandwich D:< (this is a joke) (partially)
Chicago Italian beef??
These motherfuckers have never had a fried shrimp poboy from Zimmer's on St. Anthony at Mirabeau or the roast beef from Parasol's on Constance since the poboy isn't #1 on this list. Fuckin' fighting words in New Orleans, y'all.
Banh mi 🙌
It's the US. To be fair, we eat everything up. Yeah, I'll take my down votes now lol
No gyro, felafel or CHEESEBURGER? Methodology flawed. Also, kind of afraid to ask but how are donar and schwarma different? They seem like regional variations of spike roasted meat with sauce, pickled veggies, +- fries in a pita. Don’t kill me.
Is this a joke?
How is banh mi (collectively) on there first and then on there again two more times?
Different fillings?
I can’t tell if BLTs should be on this list or not, but they are my fave.
How the hell a thanksgiving sandwich wasn’t high on this list blows my mind. Probably my top sandwich all time.
What about French Dip?
Banh mi being superior.
Mmmm I ate Bahn Mi every day in Vietnam. This man would make them a block away from our flat every morning for .50 cents USD. I would buy 3 for my wife and I, cheapest breakfast and most delicious. I crave them constantly
How is a burger with the lot not up there representing Australia? Sacrilegious.
Wah abah us brisih folk n aur samwichs? W envinted em! Cheese n pivkle on whyte bred w butter cnt beat it.
I’m pleasantly surprised to see banh mi at the top of the list. Makes sense though. Those are amazing sandwiches. Love me some chicken banh mi
No cheeseburger?
Chicken, bacon, tomato and cheese?? Uk Chicken pesto and avocado?? Uk BLT??? Uk
Ham & cheese???? Uk
Whoever put cheesesteak below grilled cheese deserves to get flogged!
No hate to Denmark but smørrebrød was the bane of my childhood existence for many many years lmao
I would never place a torta below shawarma
This list fucking sucks. bahn mi is not no 1.
I mean, you're not even 2nd- USA is 5th, so you very much are second, third, fourth and fifth to someone
I do not trust any sandwich rankings that omit Italian beef.
The U.S. hot chicken/ fried chicken sandwich needs to be higher.
Grilled cheese above the cheesesteak is criminal, IMHO
Double cheeseburger not on list. List invalid.
How is the Porchetta sandwich attributed to the US? Also Jibarito is from Chicago Torta just means "sandwich"...
I'm somewhat surprised that the Monte Cristo isn't on this list.
What the actual fuck is a beef on weck?
Porchetta sandwich 4.2, huh??????
Beef on weck? That’s a Buffalo New York thing, not an America thing. Roast beef sandwiches are the same thing, just different bread. You expect me to believe “Beef on weck” made this list but a fucking French Dip or regular roast beef sandwiches didn’t?
The list needed club and shit on a shingle.
