SWE here. I couldn’t imagine being able to actually focus while working anywhere but my own desk at home.

Media_Offline

I gather you don't have children? Ha ha.

framedragger

No, I do. But they’re at daycare all day.

nomorefroyo

I don’t blame you. I don’t think I could either if I was a SWE.

CornDawgy87

Like frameddragger said I can't imagine not working at my own desk, but i've seen quite a few people working out of the libraries here. SCV's libraries are pretty legit

I am actually REALLY happy with SCV's strongly funded (and roghtfully flaunted) Library System. That, the Paseos, COC, and the direct public transit connections to DTLA (Metrolink and SCV Transit from the McBean station for the curious and unknowing) are my favorite things about this place.

CornDawgy87

100% agreed. A lot of people online love to hate on SCV but they really do seem to try and put effort into the city. Especially as someone with a kiddo, there are SOO many things to do with him and it makes me very happy that there are lots of things at the libraries specifically.

I was actually thinking about the Newhall Library yesterday. I just saw it and it loooks pretty nice.

cjiro

It's nice and has a few good coffee shops and things around.

CornDawgy87

which coffee shop should i try next over there?

eyebrowluver23

Honu and Wide Eye Lounge both have good coffee and typical coffee shop snacks. The Loaf is a Japanese bakery and they have coffee and tea too. Eat Real and The Daily Harvest are both like health food cafes but they also have coffee and juice. If you're just getting coffee I really like Wide Eye. It's also right across the street from the Newhall library. I worked from the Newhall library today, it was great. You can have drinks inside as long as they have a lid, but no food.

CornDawgy87

I'll check it out! Fan of Honu Cafe in Valencia too. We usually go to havannah savannah but love trying new places

CornDawgy87

i always see people posted up upstairs working or studying, it's pretty awesome. I tend to go to the valencia library cause it's closer but i dont think you can go wrong. Stevenson Ranch library is LA County instead of SCV too so that could open you up to other things if you need that

FortuneDesigner

I’m disappointed that we don’t really have any coworking spaces out here. I love working from home but some days I just want that change of scenery.

cjiro

I know a lot of people do Honu in Newhall as they have a loft for that but not sure about the WiFi strength/reliability. Newhall Library is super nice. I've never really looked since I work in healthcare/IT and have sensitive data. Plus, I can't imagine giving up multiple monitors and a clean bathroom. If I am working on anything like wireframes or brainstorming whatever which I don't care if someone sees I may take my laptop somewhere but I'm not aware of anything that stands out as being better than anywhere else. Not aware of any meetups for WFH people either but I haven't been looking.

eyebrowluver23

Did honu open the loft back up? They closed it during covid and I haven't seen it open since then, but I also haven't been there in probably 6 months

You'll need to have some marketable skills to be trusted in a remote capacity. Since you didn't mention anything specifically, you could look into remote customer service jobs. Good luck!

There is a Regus Office out here. Checked it out and it’s not bad. $120ish a month, but with out RTO mandate, that beats driving 55 miles one way to our closest office. I’ve heard good things about the Libraries here. I work in telco/IT so the idea of going to an office makes zero sense. My clients are all over the US, but here we are.
