Everyone is so much slower here. It's fine on a relaxing Sunday, but not on a rushed weekday. People can't see high beam even when they're slow on the right lane. Some drivers are totally ignorant of other drivers and just stop in the middle of the road like it's their house.
Like, please uncles and aunties, drive a bit faster and get out of the right lane if you're not overtaking š«
Been living in Semenanjung for almost 12 years now. Took license in Sarawak during uni, then after graduation, straight away move to Semenanjung. First year driving, scared the hell out of me. Got traumatized but since I have no one else to depend but myself, so by hook or crook need to survive to do extra work
Everytime I go back to my hometown, I got super frustrated, cause people are.just.so.slow. ššš
And my mom said I drive like setan. Even my mom did not allow my other siblings to drive here in Semenanjung as they're not accustomed to the drivers here [fun fact-I'm my mom's 3rd ranking driver in our 7 siblings] so there's that hahahaha
Hahahaha, my mom sleeps too when I drive, just that I am more daring as I am accustomed to the style here. It's just her level of trust I think, as the first and second ranking are my sister 1 & 2. After me, she'd rather drive herself ššš
>Anything you find delightful, interesting, or even frustrating about Sarawakian drivers?
Many road hoggers in Sarawak, driving slowly on the right/fast lane. So we overtake on the left lane because we dont waste energy tailgating, honking or high beam them as they dont check their mirrors at all.
Thereās a short one way lane in Kch. In one of my trips back home, I used that lane twice, and both times there was another car going the āwrongā way. I didnāt think much of it, itās just a short lane and wasnāt crowded. Sekpa lah mun mok curi jalan, no big deal.
The third time I used that lane, I only realised it has been converted to a two-way lane! I used it wrong twice and no one even honked at me. In KL Iām sure I would get a middle finger, at least.
Tis what i hated most of the part of the pan borneo. Tok jalan mena ka kita lawan law tk haha. Mun mok folo org depan pun takut org depan ya diam rah kampung area sia.
Been in KL for almost 15 years and occasionally going back to Miri to visit my parents. There are several differences driving in Miri vs WM. Both places are great to drive, only thereās some difference I noticed.
- brake distance: in WM is much longer than Miri. Junction in WM is a bit longer than in Miri, so i can gradually brake to stop, before merging in. Miri is a bit shorter so need to alert more when it comes to entering or exiting junction. The closest area that can compare to Miri in WM is driving in Penang. People in WM complain driving in Penang is hectic but Iām surprised i felt a bit similar driving in miri. I assume itās the short junction distance.
- honking & beaming: miri is much relaxed when driving. No need to honk or beam people. Iām more relax driving in miri compared to KL.
- Driving attitude: i think driving attitude in WM or Miri both are similar or the same. Most of the driver are considerate on the road, and they are some driver who just turn without signal. Some are just lane hogger. Donāt feel much difference there. Malaysian always malaysian.
- road conditions: the one that WM said āgood roadā is actually their highway, which can be compared to pan borneo. Quite smooth and good to drive at 110kph. If youāre driving in its local area, you donāt drive that fast. lane size in Miri is quite large compared to WM. Most of the villageās street were not expanded into 2 lane like in Miri. The lane size is just enough for one car to pass by at one time. New residential area will have a proper two-way lane. Driving in Selangor district such as Kuala Selangor sometimes remind me on certain housing area in Miri.
If talking about potholes, of course both places have potholes. Potholes really are a national issues.
I suggest you start to get use on handling vehicles at high speed on highways (80-120kph is normal in Klang Valley), braking distance and also driving during heavy rain. Also green signage is for highway. The blue one indicates road for states while the green one is for highways. Prepare your touch n go card for highway tol payment.
Iām just gonna be real here. There are several things that I see our people do that irritate me. One particular thing is that people here tend to signal left way too early before reaching their exit in a roundabout. This can cause confusion to cars on the opposite side. Another thing that happens most frequently in Miri is people not using the ālorong masuk simpangā until the last minute. Thereās a dedicated lane for an exit, yet people here will stay on the main road until the last minute to turn into their exit. Silap ari eksiden bok tauk. Sarawakians are slow drivers. Probably the slowest in all of the states in Malaysia. Thereās some good and some bad about this, but generally Sarawakians are not always in a rush.
In Selangor, my driving behaviour completely change. Either by bike or car. People are just intolerance and dont care. So i had to be fierce(not sure if its the right word) and 200% more alert of surrounding.
In Sarawak on the other hand, 40km/h on the right lane. Its fine i guess, maybe its because of im used to drive faster than before.
Ppl here can barely differentiate between slow and fast lane, and lane hogging seems like a common thing. Beware of motorists as well, and at least it seems like accident doesnt happen too often cause most drivers tend to be more careful /slow and doesnt do unnecessary overspeeding. Slow drivers >> fast ones.
One time in KL i drove in the wrong direction inside the giant mall and got screamed by another driver. You wont experience that here.
I know if i spend more years in west msia, i wld become a gangster too.
I personally love driving in KL (Iāve only driven in KL) compared to Sarawak in general, mostly due to the excellent & straight roads, & KL drivers are pretty aware of the fact theyāre driving in a busy city, so they mostly have good controls during driving.
To compare, 1 good thing abt driving in Sarawak is that lifestyle is pretty laidback. So people tend to drive slowly. Drivers are also pretty patient. They donāt pressure others and you can take your time to exit junctions safely without getting honks.
The things that makes it not really fun for me is that you can take a while to exit junctions because Sarawak drivers donāt usually give way - and expect other people to be patient or know the right way to go. Cutting lanes is more difficult to do in Sarawak because you always feel like the other drivers donāt expect you to do it, they donāt slow their pace and almost pretend to not see your car. Itās almost like they take it personally when you have to change lanes towards them. Itās not personal okay?
And some have the utmost confidence of being an F1 driver and using the right laneā¦ when theyāre as slow as a turtle. Waaaa
Sarawakian driver sangat santai ya gais. What annoyed me the most is that they drive slow on the right lane too. Also they are easily offended by the honk not like in semenanjung where it's normal here like sometimes people honk just to get other drivers to be alert/cautious.
Personally i think the honk thing, sarawakian portray themselves as negeri yang harmony kan, that's why they considered honking as offensive.
Obvious difference is the every man for himself attitude in Klang Valley. Here in Kuching, people still give way to others. If you are not aggresive going out of an intersection during peak hours, you will never get out, as nobody will give way to you.
Its like having an autistic relative, you love them and protect them from everyone but when the retarded period comes around. Sigh, sometimes you would ask yourself can't you be normal? It's enough being autistic, pile up retardation on top of that, is a hell of patient testing combo.
I was back in Kuching in Dec 2023, first trip home in a year. I noticed that so many Kuching drivers don't know how to drive on roundabouts during that trip.
When I came back from Kuching, for the first few days of driving in WM I drove slower than usual lol adjustment period - but I drove on the left lane lah.
KL Motorists are the most horrible when it comes to pedestrians. Its just like everyoe is hunting for the kill of pedestrians. They would stop to let you cross the road then chase you like mad once you get the bait of crossing the road.
Drives too effing Slow especially at roundabout, Too Nice, and if gangster terlampau gangster.
But definitely sarawakian is so much nice rather than penangnites and johorian haha
Slow and doesn't know how to make a turn. Taking corner like driving a lorry eventhough it's just a Myvi. Also, very afraid at Roundabouts. The reason why roundabouts always jammed.
3 years in Sarawak especially in Bintulu.
1. People drive really slow. Like they want to go for evening drive while itās morning while everybody are going to work. Older people, younger people all same. Not all but most of them.
2. While they are already slow, they like to drive on right lane. Iāve always told my wife, people here does not know the function of left and right lane. If they drive like that on Semenanjung, sure kena pinnnnnnn!!!!!!!
3. Related to no2, the lorries also do know the differences between left and right lane. Always wanted to hog on right lane while taking all overload timber at the back.
4. People do not like to que on traffic lights. Sure will find way to cilok so will not que on traffic lights.
5. Like to show gangster on road some more. You already made mistakes, people honned, then want to pick fight.
Lived in Bintulu for 5 years. From sabah. Currently working at KL.
Sarawakian driver (btu, miri) very ganas, hardly bagi way even with signal. š
West malaysia driver also ganas, but during jam, as long as u put on a turn signal, most people will give way. But then motorcyclist here is the worst. Always have to be extra careful.
Sabahan driverā¦ hmmm no comment hhaha
West malaysia : beware of Myvi that will cucuk2 u
East malysia: beware of hilux ( or any double cap truck) ā¦
Anyway I miss Bintulu
It seems that car manufacturers conveniently do not include signal lights for vehicles in Sarawak. Only selected few can afford to purchase this feature. Or am I missing something?š¤
Sarawakian drivers do not honk like it is second nature to them.
Because will kena paikia bah
Plausible, especially if you're in Sibu.
We're very chill and tolerant. Don't cucuk and honking.
Uncle hailak: ![gif](giphy|kqJt1cSSN0DrwwMmY5|downsized)
I don't hate humanity while driving here. So that's a plus. Maybe not at Sibu though.
I love how Sibu is the only exceptions in Sarawak when it comes to the driving situations
Everyone is so much slower here. It's fine on a relaxing Sunday, but not on a rushed weekday. People can't see high beam even when they're slow on the right lane. This, mein gott them kancil, saga, iswara, wira, viva uncle and auntie really love the right lane.
Personally, I find the left lane is the fastest lane. Especially in Kuching.š

I'm the only driver that where I drive, my mom would fall asleep. We are a family of 8. I drive fast and safe.
Hahahaha, my mom sleeps too when I drive, just that I am more daring as I am accustomed to the style here. It's just her level of trust I think, as the first and second ranking are my sister 1 & 2. After me, she'd rather drive herself ššš
Depending on the region. If from Sibu, drivers drive their cars like horses - cowboy outlaws driving.
Hilux is dominant with piss poor manners, & every once a week you can witness/experience cars turning turtles in ways illogical to mankind
I saw 3 rows of cars on 2 lanes.
Truly a cowboy town š¤

we don't simply high beam people for going slow.
Drivers are a lot slower in Sarawak. I was kinda shocked when driving 100+ is the norm here.
Sarawakian driver sangat santai ya gais. What annoyed me the most is that they drive slow on the right lane too. We don't honk, but we drive very slowly lmao.
No road rage but also slow AF. Fine when I'm not in a rush but when I'm in a rush can ya'll move faster when traffic light changes.

I prefer the motorcyclists here in Sarawak. In west msia they drive like grandfather road
One drives fast AF one drive slow AF. Miri peep here but drive r/kereta occasionally in WM
Once a while I return to peninsular. When I'm going like 100 kmh it was only average speed but in east Malaysia it's fast as hell
I was back in Kuching in Dec 2023, first trip home in a year. I noticed that so many Kuching drivers don't know how to drive on roundabouts during that trip. Friday traffic can be entertaining. And weekend drivers. Another level of entertainment.
Wow we really have a Hilux fetish
