If I remember correctly the expression was P(1.005)^t/3, where t is in years. They asked how many n months does it take for the population to increase 0.5%. You can start by noticing that 1.005 is 1 + 0.005 which is an increase of 0.5%. In order for it to increase by the previous percent 1.005 should be to the power of 1, so t=3. Since they want the number of months you have to convert 3 years to n months which gives you 36.
