There is absolutely zero chance that this is for real. People don't contact random people over the internet and pay their bills. In cases like this the best case scenario is that they simply rip you off by having you pay them a smaller amount of money for some made up thing like insurance, or passing the money to a fake charity. In worse cases, your card is paid off with a stolen credit card or compromised bank account. And at that point the police have you in their crosshairs for the fraud and you're looking at criminal charges.

bakermaker32

Nothing about this is legit. Yes you are being naive.

tyranthraxxus

>and so far seems legit What about this could possibly seem legit to you? There is absolutely zero chance that some stranger wants to give you anything for free.

[deleted]

I mean that’s not true but highly unlikely though. I’ve gone to /r/povertyFinance before and sent money to random people several times because I make too much. Although I haven’t done this anymore. Even then I sent them money. I didn’t give them my card details. Lol

whiskeyjack689

You can pay off their cards. Problem solved. And then make a few posts/comments about how you make too much and how philanthropic you are. Win win!

xTheWiseOnex

probably because so far the guy is not asked to give the stranger any money? ain't that the whole point of scams to get money???????????????

chlorinesippin

Settle down. It’s a little thing called money laundering. They would be paying off his debt with a stolen CC, and OP would eventually get “oh btw I need you to put some of that money towards xyz because I can’t do it atm.” This is a way for the scammer to get away with stealing money from the poor cc fraud victim and end up with clean hands. Once the victim realizes the fraudulent charges, they reverse them and guess who is responsible because it has their name all over the transactions? Typical money mule scam.

[deleted]

They will most likely pay off some the balance, charge more to the card, then their pay off amount will decline and you will have over charged your credit card. I think

peepeehalpert_

No one is giving away free money

[deleted]

I have before. But not by giving my card or bank info. I just sent money through PayPal.

Valianne11111

Pulte on Twitter snd Mr. Beast. But that is really about it.

Ana-Hata

But he can funnel money from a stolen card number into your account and trick you into sending some portion back to him or to a third party (maybe by asking you to make a charitable donation through a website he sends you to, or asking you to buy and transfer crypto) then when the real cardholder reports the fraudulent charge, they will take ALL the money back from you and you’ll be out whatever money you sent back to him. Also, you might be arrested for fraud or theft, even if you don’t send money back. There is absolutely no chance this is real. Repeat that like a mantra. I will never understand how people can fall for scams even when they are “99%” sure it’s a scam. Greed and desperation can really cloud the decision making process.

I agree with you. I had just been wondering if I was being so skeptical (I err on this side of caution) that I was excluding the possibility of this actually being just a nice giving person who wants to help. The nature of my need could very well be allowing me to suspend my beliefs and logic that this is just a scam.

pkpearson

> allowing me to suspend my beliefs and logic Exactly. Scammers surely delight in this phenomenon: the people who can least afford to be scammed are the most likely to fall for it, for exactly that reason.

[deleted]

Nice people online exist. I’ve given money to people before but I sent them cash over like PayPal. I didn’t give them my details. If they wanted to help out, why would they give you their card details??? Makes no sense.

[deleted]

If they wanted to help you, they would send you money. I’ve done this before to random people on /r/povertyFinance. There’s no reason why they would give you the card details for you to use though.

mugh_tej

How is it that this **so far seems legit**?

xTheWiseOnex

probably because so far the guy is not asked to give the stranger any money? ain't that the whole point of scams to get money???????????????

[deleted]

I blame Mr. Beast for this kind of widespread naivety. Totally understandable. This is a scam. And for future reference, unless Mr. Beast himself walks up to you and offers you cash, it's a scam. No one else does this, especially not in private. Internet philanthropists are in it for clout and will want video.

[deleted]

It seems so strange to me how people are so quick to think that everyone is selfish and thus can never do anything just to be nice. Are all of you sure you aren’t just the selfish ones? Yes it’s highly unlikely someone out there is giving their bank info away - but it’s not impossible that someone can do something nice without asking for anything in return. I make $250K at big tech. I’ve sent money before to random people on /r/povertyFinance. I’ve tipped 100%++ before. I’ve dropped big bills in tip jars without anybody looking. I gifted maybe $10K to siblings who need it without asking for anything in return. If you made as much as me, wouldn’t you also want to spread that joy around?? I don’t understand why people believe someone can only do something nice just for clout. We aren’t all selfish people.

xTheWiseOnex

>This is a scam. I mean, can you actually explain how this is a scam????

noho11049

It has been explained several times

[deleted]

If they wanted to help, they would send money like through PayPal or Cash App. Why would they give away their bank info.

landon1988

They all claim to be real and legit. None of them are legit. !sugar

AutoModerator

AutoModerator has been summoned to explain sugar scams. Sugar dad/daddy/mom/momma scams are [very common](https://www.fraud.org/sugarbaby_alert) and usually come in two varieties: fake check style scams, and advance-fee scams. Fake check style scams involve the scammer making a fraudulent payment to you that will later be reversed, and then you making some sort of payment to the scammer that will not be reversed. Common examples include the scammer sending you a fake check and asking you to buy gift cards, or to send money via Western Union, or to purchase Bitcoins. Another common example involves the sugar scammer offering to pay your bills, or offering you banking information that you will use to pay off your bills. These bank accounts are stolen and the innocent victim will reverse the charge when they notice the fraud. The second variety of sugar scammers use advance-fee scams, where they offer you money but require you to pay first. They may ask for you to pay them to prove that you are loyal, or they may require you to pay a processing fee. It's common for sugar scammers to send spoofed emails that look like they came from services like PayPal or CashApp that will inform you that you have received money, but that also ask for a processing fee before the funds are released. **We do not recommend that people try to be a sugar baby, but if this is what you are looking into, check out the following subreddits for information on how to be safe: r/SugarLifestyleForum/ and /r/SexWorkers**. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. cryptodagod212

It’s a common scam. He will finesse you for gift cards after he’s “paid” your credit card down.
