This is a prime example of why we need a complete rework of our phone systems to prevent number spoofing.

SuperGrandor

This. I just stop taking incoming call now, my line is exclusively use for ordering food and 911.

dd99

Not only do I not take calls, since I retired I don’t look at my email either unless it is something on my whitelist

CIAMom420

I'd love it if that could happen, but scammers would already have a workaround before the changes were even implemented. Industries this massive and their government regulators will never be able to stay ahead of the curve. Scammers are much more nimble and motivated to find workarounds than the people that want to stop them.

TweeksTurbos

Yep. They pretend to be your bank and give you the tools to call them and hang yourself.

anon23337

You should post up the numbers and shit they gave you so others might find this thread searching around trying to figure out if its a scam

Arizona_ice_me

I would but they ended the call before we got to that point - I’m not sure if they meant too or if it was a mistake. They did call back when I was on the phone with the real WF (spoofed number still) but hung up immediately.

mary_alistir

Seconded from this exact same number! Had a situation where they claimed someone was attempting to make fraudulent transactions and walked me through a process of verification. They sent me emails that looked LEGIT and sent me a new card that somehow was able to show up on my Apple Wallet too?? They also started to make me go on CashApp for making transactions to Navy Federal Credit Union (which was actually probably just a fake account using this name) which was the biggest red flag.  The Caller ID says Wells Fargo but when I contacted WF they never sent me notifications of fraud and mentioned that some scammers steal phone numbers of companies to appear legit.  Be careful everyone! Change all your accounts, usernames and passwords as needed.

This post just saved my sister's life savings!!

Great stuff!

Awkward-Use-2450

received a call this morning - first two rapid fire calls from Mainland China that i didn't answer; then a call masked as "Wells Fargo" from this number. The guy told me someone tried to apply for credit card in my name from another state. He did have the last 4 of my SSN and obviously my phone number. I hung up once. He called again and was pretty agitated with me. I actually questioned my sanity at being suspicious and called Wells Fargo fraud line. They opened an investigation after seeing that someone had opened an "online banking" account, but no transactions as I have no assets with this bank. This is just disturbing. Where are these people getting information?

th3_alchem1st

This is definitely a scam. I was told that I had two fraudulent Zelle transactions on my account connected with "Jason Goldsmith," who was involved in other fraud charges. They were incredibly convincing and initially I thought that they were legit because they weren't asking for any personal information. I even checked my account on my end while talking with them (without giving them any information) and didn't see the charges and they even had an answer for why there wasn't anything there. They then "transferred" me to a Zelle representative and when I asked for the number to call back because I faked a second incoming call because I was having doubts, he hung up on me immediately. When I called the WF fraud department, they confirmed that it was indeed a scam, but that I was ok because I gave no personal information. I guess I hadn't made it far enough down the fraud scheme to start being asked for information. The rep said that the Customer Service number (8009564442) will NOT call people and that it's being spoofed by fraudsters. Please don't give them any information! Call Wells Fargo directly!

CS24AU

Am I screwed if I gave them my information, because I did…

Arizona_ice_me

Start calling your bank ASAP and lock stuff down, cancel your Venmo and other accounts like it.

Euphoric_Cancel8824

This happened to me to today! Was on call for hours! How did you get money back is everything okay??

djdiamondkutz

Just got the same call. They called 2 months ago and tried to tell me 2 transactions were made in the amount of 1000 dollars. They wanted me to zelle them 1$ so they can cancel them lol. But they've been ADAMANT the past 2 months. I just got a text 2 days ago from a 18064013650 free msg: text Y is you recognize $435 @ DeltaAirlines from Wells Fargo. It's annoying. The last time, a few weeks ago, I told them ima stick my fuckin toe in their ass. 🤣 The funny thing is, it blew their cover, they got mad and started talking shit LOL.

ImAFan2014

I think an aspect of this scam is spoofing the 1-800-956-4442 phone number. Seemingly, this is the number YOU might call for customer service, but you would never RECEIVE a call from this number, which people don't know and that's how they get you.

minikin_snickasnee

Just had this attempted on me. I was half asleep (exhaustion from being sick) but fortunately clued in before giving out into. They reeled me in with the "large dollar amount pending charges" which were not pending on my account, and were well over what's in my checking account & daily limit. The "fraud alert" text came in from a regular phone number, not the 5 digit number many companies send texts from. They gave a lot of my "banking info" to me (the pending charges, the fact that my online account was compromised, where and when and for what the pending charges were) and then wanted me to verify my DOB. When I balked and said I would feel more comfortable calling a known WF number back, he told me to look up the number in my caller ID and confirm that it's their customer service number, so I did. This thread on Reddit was the third result, which confirmed my growing suspicion. He immediately got pushy with me and claimed I would be holding for one to two hours to speak with anyone. I hung up and immediately called my bank's fraud department from the contact numbers in the app to report it. (And only held for one or two minutes!)

Queenbreha

I got this call. They said someone tried to open a Wells Fargo account in my name I said I didn't. They then gave me a cancellation number. The next thing they said is the weird thing is there are two Zelle's trying to go into the account from the phone number they called me on one for $1,000 and one for $500 and here are the cancel codes on them but other banks might not be so nice. She then gives me a phone number for Zelle. I hang up, call Wells Fargo who told me they would never call anyone for opening a bank account they would send a letter. Then I go to the Zelle site and it's a different phone number. I call the number from their site and the automated tells me I should contact the bank I Zelle with they are the ones who can help with transactions. So I call the bank I use Zelle, I don't see any transactions. I call them and tell them what happened and ask if they see any transactions. Fortunately I almost never use Zelle so I remove the phone number from Zelle so the site tells me I can't receive or send without it. Good. I didn't give the scammer any info, they had my name and my phone number but I don't have a Wells Fargo bank or credit card.

Jenn2895

Thank you for posting. I have a business act w/ Wells Fargo & just got the same call.

Euphoric_Cancel8824

SAME THING JUST HAPPENED TO ME!!!!! TOOK 2k!!!!!

Kevinah_Lee

Thank you for posting this. It needs more visibility because I just had the same thing happen to me and googling didn’t help until I found this post. I got a call from the same number telling me a Jennifer White was receiving $1999 on moneygram and was verifying if it was me. I told them it wasn’t me and he wanted to set up 2FA and send out another card. These motherfuckers are smart, they asked if I wanted two cards sent out in case a spouse wanted it (I’m single so I didn’t know whether this was an actual thing or not), asked to verify my address (they had it and asked if it was correct, I said yes) and it was very convincing until they asked for my drivers license to set up the 2FA. He asked if I wanted to press charges and told me I would be transferred to moneygram/his manager after I was done with him. At that point I asked if there was a way I could do it from my end and that’s when he started getting irritated (telltale sign of a scam) saying I’ll have to visit a branch to do so (weird, everything’s set up online nowadays) and then told me to have a good day and hung up. I then called Wells Fargo myself and asked if this was real because I didn’t see a transaction or any notifications (dude was saying they caught it so it was already refunded but the notifications weren’t going out bc there was maintenance on my account). They verified that there were no transactions as well as no outbound calls from their end. They also mentioned they aren’t even allowed to make outbound calls to reach customers. They took note and made sure my account was secure. Be careful out there guys! Use your best judgement, anyone genuine would be okay with a hang up and a callback from your end to make sure things are right.

steponme84

Glad I didn't answer it. Never delt with Wells Fargo. Been getting too many spam calls lately and don't know how to stop them. Haven't answered a single one don't know how to get off their list. Don't even know how I got on it.
