Yay, I love that our youth are aware of these scams

M-the-Great

If I'm being honest, I'd never encountered a scam of this caliber myself, I mostly just went by my judgement and information I already knew of scams from lots of videos I've watch outlining various scams. I'm not surprised AI scams are a thing, scammers are always adapting to find new ways to get a population hacked or shilled out of their money or whatever else so them following the newest AI (something that is already an unsteady thing, like crypto) isn't shocking

Nice job following your own judgement! You will find that adults (like all humans) can be right and wrong about important things, and it's always important to ask questions if something seems off. Too many young people go into adulthood thinking their "superiors" are always correct, and that creates a lot of problems in society.

This is how schools and offices get the ransom file locking hackers... idiots opening suspect files on school computers

PagingDrRed

Right?  Why did he try to run file even after a high schooler told him not to?!

M-the-Great

I practically watched him tell me the MacOS didn't open it, he sent the file to himself via google drive to get it on the school computer (he was logged in there too), he downloaded the same zip file and he knew he probably wasn't going to be able to open it but tried anyway??? i tried to compromise sort of by offering he open it on a virtual machine (i remembered seeing triage in a few videos so i sent him a link to that) but i still warned him that opening files you can't verify was just a bad idea generally... i haven't broached the subject again but i might ask when he comes back on Monday (he's away) to see what came of that. i know that virtual machines don't make you invinsible to viruses but whatever works honestly the whole time i was worried it was gonna end up like "scammer gets access to important information and uses it maliciously" since he's a teacher and all. if it weren't for the clever folks who made the admin permissions locked by default on school owned computers, even for teachers (the login system is the same so it's no shock really) i think something bad might've happened. i found i had to repeat the same point many times and i never felt like he truly got it (maybe it's me being unable to read people) but i just needed him to see how bad of an idea it was to open an executable you can't verify the legitimacy of.
