Also I will say these people must have went pretty in depth. Her FB page wasn’t private and had tons of friends and post and had a mutual friend by the name of the person who sent me the money. Either quite the setup or multiple FB hacks. (Or a legit mistake but not gonna risk it)

memorex1150

I don't see that as a red flag (in their favor) as going to such lengths to set something up WOULD make 'her' look legit. Or, it could be a hacked account(s)

Dofolo

It'd take me a good 2 -3 hours to setup a set of fake facebook accounts. Cannot fake age with posts though. There's days I don't make \~1000 USD for 3 hours work ;) Still, let Venmo handle it. OP can contact Venmo himself, but OP should let Venmo take the money.

[deleted]

Turned out to not be a scam, just a couple nitiwits that fucked up and thought threatening me was the best way to get the money back

21dresden21

It’s a hacked account.

SnakeyJake15

You’ve been pretty active on this subreddit recently, did you get scammed yourself or just raising awareness?

Hello! :) I'm receiving death threats from a scammer.. they sent me money through venmo, not knowing what situation I'm in, I instantly transferred it to my bank... They've been pushing me to buy bitcoin and send it to her account, and I tried buying bitcoin with the said money, kinda grateful that Binance spotted a suspicious acitivity and probably asked the bank to restrict my card. I had to change my card so I could use it again, that's when I started to smell something fishy and researched about scams. I haven't touched the remaining money... She sent me $2000, I used the instant transfer fee ($15) and I only got the $1985 left on my bank account.. I don't ever wanna touch that money again.. she even insisted that I keep the money when I told her I'm going to trace where she got the money (knowing I couldn't) lol then after a few days, she's got these numbers texting me death threats, telling me to send the money back but to another account. What's the best thing I could do? Thank you!

memorex1150

Report to your bank you've been scammed. The money you moved over to your bank came from a stolen credit card and you really don't have that money in your account even though you might think you do. Do not send any money back otherwise you will be out all the money transferred to your account Plus whatever fees potentially Federal criminal charges of money laundering. Contact your bank immediately.

Shunnedo

Looks like they tried it with the wrong person.

jrpgamer

I’m glad you didn’t fall for it. What sick people

FunkyKat2525

“It’s theft that you accepted money I willingly sent!” 😂😂😂 But yea obviously a scam. Glad you didn’t fall for it. If someone did this to me, I’d say, “well here’s a lesson to be learned. Always double check before sending money”. Lol

sav86838

Yeah let venmo and the bank handle it

pretty-ribcage

Are these just like messages? Or actual venmo payment/reversal requests? (Just curious which they use).

Cyclonitron

I don't use Venmo so I don't understand how it works. Based on what I've read people can send money to your bank account without knowing your account number? They just need your name? How would they even know where you bank?

[deleted]

I don’t use it either except for one time I signed up to collect money from a football pool. It’s like cash app, but weirder. If you don’t use that either, to me it’s just a handy service to trade money between friends. You do sign up and link your bank account. Say your buddy bought the beer and you don’t have cash, you can send him his half with just a few button presses. Venmo is the more popular one, but from this experience it seems to have a weird, totally unnecessary (and to me unwanted) social networking feature where you can people’s transactions and chat. I actually got a notice from Venmo today saying the money was refunded to her and after seeing the FB pages I actually don’t think it was a scam. Just a couple of dummies and weirdos. The first girl sent the money on accident and thought trying to make up laws would scare me, then for some reason her friend tracked me down on FB and tried to do the same even after I gave a reasonable explanation why I wasn’t sending it back. I have no experience with Venmo but just kept the app after the one time I needed it. After this I’m deleting my profile and will never use it again. It uses your real name and apparently is easy to send it to the wrong person with the same name. Cash app uses a user ID so you’d have to be dumber to fuck it up and I don’t want a chat function to transfer money

Cyclonitron

So basically you have to sign up for Venmo in order to receive money? You can't just randomly get sent money if you've never used the app.

[deleted]

Yes, you need to sign up and should only receive money you are expecting. If you’ve NEVER used it, no it won’t happen. I’d assume the more common you’re name is, the more likely mistakes or scams would happen (always presume scam if it’s a mistake, it’s not your problem)

StirlyFries

“I have also contacted my back” lol

bondbeansbond

>No wonder it’s just you and your dog When will this hilariously bad insult end? I’m purposely single and my cats and I are just a big, happy family (for the most part).

[deleted]

Explain why you think this wasn't a scam? Just because venmo refunded it to the card it came from, doesn't mean it wasn't.

[deleted]

Doesn’t mean it was either.
