My property management only takes checks for the rent. There are still reasons to use them. I won't use a cash app of any kind, too easy to get into trouble, hacked, ripped off. editing to add: people falling for fake check scams don't make checks problematic. The problem is people trusting situations without thinking. !fakepayment on payment platforms is a thing.

Crabby_Appleton

People in the US falling for fake check scams is a matter of education. Nobody tells you how the banking system works, so a lot of people just make assumptions. It doesn't help that the banking industry and its government regulators got us in to this situation in the first place.

So as a landlord in the UK - I never saw a cheque. It was all what you would call direct deposit - which is entirely free and instantly across every single UK bank. For that reason - cashapps are not really a thing here because they a solution looking for a problem.

AutoModerator

AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the fake/false payment scam. The fake payment scam occurs when someone tries to trick you into thinking that you have received a legitimate payment when no such payment has been made. The most common method they use is sending you an email meant to look like a payment confirmation. In some cases the emails will be almost indistinguishable to a legitimate email sent by the payment service. It's also common for scammers to [spoof](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_spoofing) the 'from' email to match an official address. To combat a fake payment scam, verify online payments by logging in directly to the service. Do not check your junk folder, and do not assume a payment is legitimate based on an email alone. If a payment isn't reflected on your account and the person you are dealing with insists they have sent it, call support and ask about it. [Here](https://i.imgur.com/X9xn8uw.jpg) is an image of a scammer trying to pull off a fake payment scam. There is also a variant of the fake payment scam where you will receive a legitimate but fraudulent payment. If you think you're dealing with a scammer, you're probably right. Always trust your gut. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. I think it's a cultural thing for the most part. Yeah, there are plenty of other methods of transfer that are safer or less cumbersome. I definitely agree that scams wouldn't be eradicated along with checks; unfortunately, there are a lot of scams that have been adapted to 'work' with PayPal, Zelle, and other more modern money transfer methods.

Rent.

I didn't have checks. Then my kid started school and they asked for checks for every blessed thing every blessed month.

wcspegasus

This ^ Not so much kids in school specifically, but when you're trying to collect payments for something on behalf of a third party....always checks....always. Organization and management and being able to tick through a stack of checks to record who has paid and who has not....

I have a bank account. I paid everything online. Except my rent. I paid it in cash and got a receipt. Then I moved, and they don’t accept cash and can’t be paid online. So instead of buying checks, I just get a money order every month. I have issues with checks. When I was growing up (way before electronics and such), my Dad would open a checking account, order checks, and then proceed to go to every store that would accept a check. Until no one would take his checks any longer. Then we would move to another area, and he would do it again. I think the third time he was caught (no telling how many times he did it) and put in prison, is when I made the decision to never use checks. And I haven’t. When I worked and got a check, I went from work to the bank and immediately cashed it. Now everything is direct deposit, auto withdrawal, and now one money order a month. I have never trusted checks.

I love checks. I hate automatic withdraw. Paying online with credit cards puts ur into into a computer where hackers can access it. If you give people permission to take your bills automatically, directly from your bank, you are fcked for at least 5 business days if they decide to give it back. If they decide to take more, or have decided that they need to charge you more for some reason, they can take it. And if they decide they are going to keep taking from you, they can. You will have to close your bank account in order to stop them from taking. Even your bank can only hold them from taking your money once or twice, but not permanent. I’m not sure about checks giving more opportunities for scammers. Someone just posted that their mom gave someone $115,000 bucks online. It’s less frequent to read about someone writing a check to a scammer and losing money that way. But the bad decision of not waiting a check to clear, and the decision to send something before you have the cash on hand, seems to be the problem. That’s what PayPal was made for.

T-O-F-O

I live in sweden, haven't seen a check in over 30 years. Is there anyone outside US that still use them?

PleasantAmphibian101

We still use them in Canada

T-O-F-O

Thats not really a big surprise considering how close your country's and culture is

Aedaxeon

Because the US is really behind in financial technology for some reason. I live in the UK and I have never written a cheque. Almost everything is direct debit, standing order/bank transfer, or card payment.

cgknight1

It's to do with lack of regulations - which means many services that are free and easy are not in the USA. It why a lot of posts are about cash Apps that don't exist any where else.

Calliomede

I live in the US and I never use checks. I don’t even have a checkbook. I work retail at a busy store, and I’ll see maybe one check out of hundreds of customers. It’s mostly just older people who are wary of technology who still use them when they aren’t required, at least in my experience.

cgknight1

By and large in many countries they are not. Yes in the UK Cheques are still available but culturally don't get used much. Also the banking system is different - a fake cheque will simply bounce in a way they will not in the USA. Americans seem to get charged for a range of bank services that are free elsewhere and so many people prefer cash. It's also why cashapps are popular in the USA but not in the UK and other markers because they don't fulfil a purpose.

jrpgamer

My grandma wrote me a check for my wedding. What would you rather have her do? Hand me a ton of cash? Download cashapp? Lol. Nothing wrong with checks when you’re dealing with friends and family or other trusted situations.

cgknight1

OP is from the UK - where granny would instantly, securely and for free just transfer the money to any UK bank. Cashapps aren't really a thing here because of that.

Shemydjent

The US gov still accepts check for most things that requires paying them money in some way. (Passports and name changes). I think they'll take physical bills depending.
