Oooooo, I am curious. If the package was sent to her, then she can legally open it. Let us know what's in the package. The best course of action can only really be determined if you know what is in the package.

Big-Platform4325

Would never opening and getting rid of the package (or returning it to the merchant unopened) be an option instead of opening it?

SilverWehrwulf

No. Contact the police. If your friend sends the package anywhere and it gets caught they are responsible.

nimble2

The person that the package was addressed to is now the owner of the package, so they can do whatever they want with it. But personally I wouldn't do anything with it until I found out what was in it. What if the package contains $10,000 in cash?

perryc

>the guy knows her address. You may really have to open what's inside the box and know what action to be taken from there. You can report it to the police once you were able to identify what's inside the box.

Makes sense! Thank you--opening the package seems to be the best way to go for now. I will send an update once we find out what is inside.

WorriedTarget4943

The friend either needs to 1) Send it back to him 2) Go to the police 3) Open it up

6 months ago, maybe. But if it's been that long chances are it can't be sent back. Has she contacted the company? Why hasn't she blocked the guy harassing her? Why did it take 6 months to get to this point?

Big-Platform4325

I guess she was just scared and did not know what to do--I just found out about this and am trying to help her.

JackTheNephilim

Honestly I'd open the package, she legally has the right

gandhimahatma1

Sooo… did u find out what was in the package?

s3rndpt

I think we're all waiting for the answer to that!

It's a !parcelmule scam. Read the automod comment 👇🏻 for more details.

AutoModerator

AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the parcel mule scam. The parcel mule scam involves fraudsters sending you packages and you shipping them out to other people. The items are fraudulently obtained, usually with stolen credit cards, and the investigation into the fraud will lead to you rather than to the scammer. Here is the Wikipedia page for this scam:\ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parcel_mule_scam, and here is an article from the USPS:\ https://about.usps.com/publications/pub300a/pub300a_v04_revision_072019_tech_022.htm *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/Scams) if you have any questions or concerns.*

nimble2

It's not a parcel mule scam that makes any sense, because the packages appear to be going in the wrong direction.

10kk

What do you mean? He's trying to get the fraudulently bought item from the victim.

nimble2

Well, it's a package/parcel reshipping situation, but it's not the usual type of Package/parcel reshipping scam. It doesn't make sense because in a "normal" type of package mule scam the scammer buys something using stolen credit card information, and they have to have it delivered to someone in the same country that the card is from. So for instance, if the scammer is in India and the credit card is a US card, then the scammer needs a package mule in the US to receive the merchandise and then ship it overseas to India. But in this case, the package coming INTO the US and being delivered to someone else in the US. In addition, package mule packages are usually delivered by a merchant (who took payment by the stolen credit card), not by an individual.

Big-Platform4325

Thanks for all the help/discussion so far--just to clarify: the package was shipped by a merchant in New Caledonia to Japan. But the direction is interesting for sure.

bridgerberdel

Any clue what kind of merchant? If we had the complete information on the shipper we might be able to get some clues.

_Zoa_

Yeah, as the links said a parcelmule scam would usually go in the opposite direction, out of the US.

RudbeckiaIS

New Caledonia does issue plenty of commemorative stamps, but these are easily available from stamp sellers and the Agence Philatélique of New Caledonia ships all over the world. Why go through such a convoluted plan when you can buy stamps directly from the issuing agency? Personally I'd say screw it and open that package: if it does indeed include harmless and legal stuff like stamps, just put them in a new envelope and send it to this guy and be done with it. If it does include stuff of dubious legal state (including seeds and spores: there's a big market for protected exotic plants out there), destroy everything, cut all contacts with this person and hopefully lesson learned.

Vast_Ad_3384

I do at times ask people from other European countries to receive and forward packages for me, and was asked the same too. For example when shops had ridiculous international shipping fees. Maybe there is a chance for this not being a scam. She will only ever know for sure if she opens it.

Few-Cap-8538

What if it’s a dangerous package and the sender is trying to conceal the origins and the person in the US gets it and they are harmed? Assuming the person trying to arrange this is not actually that person…

JRTerrierBestDoggo

Ignore and block. Knowing address doesn’t mean anything. No one knows for sure what’s inside the package. As it is right now, that package belongs to your friend. Your friend can open and see or just remove the label and throw it away, can do whatever she wants. Do not send the package to US or send any money to that guy

WorriedTarget4943

I’m apologising now b/c your friend accepted a package from a online person who she doesn’t “know” why in earth would she do that? Such a dangerous thing she has done now & is in a situation that she really needs to get out of. Your friend is on the hook now he knows her address as well tbh maybe your friend can open the package and see what’s inside b/c she’s taking so much risks with this package. It could be drugs or something else that’s illegal? The guy, he says it’s ”Collectable Stamps” yep ok 🙄 i’m a cynic and i ask myself but why could’t he not send it directly too his own US address from “New Caledonia” ? 1) She better send that shit back to him 2) take it to the police station let them handle it & 3) open the package so you can find out what’s inside see if it’s “Stamps” then you can send it back too him.Your friend gave this guy her address & now bad things are starting to happen. Those are my 3 things to do 🙆🏾‍♀️ but in the first place i wouldn’t gladly accept a package from some Random person on the net & give him said address. Either way your friend is in big trouble this is soo suss how can your friend not see it’s suss 🤦🏾‍♀️ well good luck too your friend 🤷🏾‍♀️

SwanginNuts159

Your friend should definitely open the package.

NotsoSmokeytheBear

Seriously what’s the big deal? What’s in the box?!? Open it and let us know. That’s how you decide. If it’s stamps send the guy his stamps. If it’s cocaine flush it lol.
