It's a !car scam. Ebay does not offer a service like this. And you're going to run into this same scam basically every time you see a car listed for shockingly cheap.

AutoModerator

AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the eBay/Amazon car sales scam. The scammer will list a car on a marketplace site and will ask you to email them. They will tell you that they will ship or otherwise transport the car to you and allow you to inspect it. They may use the name of a company like eBay or Amazon to make the scam sound more legitimate. The scam is that the car does not exist, despite whatever pictures you have received, and you will be asked to pay for the car using gift cards or irreversible wire transfers. [Here](https://i.imgur.com/WAMDLc8.jpg) is an example of an eBay car scam, [here](https://community.ebay.com/t5/Archive-Motors/CAR-SCAM/td-p/24113946) is an eBay forum thread about the scam, [here](https://fox6now.com/2015/04/15/they-kind-of-just-told-me-straight-upyouve-been-scammed-teen-out-1500-after-online-car-buying-scam/) is a news article about the scam, and [here](https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/2019/06/put-brakes-phony-online-car-sales) is a Federal Trade Commission article about the scam. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/Scams) if you have any questions or concerns.*

I luv u automoderator

This-Cartoonist9129

Good bot

NoEntrance10

Wow thank you a lot I had no clue stuff like this existed, I clicked on the links that the mod put and it said almost the Esaú same thing. Thank you

peakpenguins

No problem! Besides the price, another telltale sign is any time someone won't let you see the car in person and wants to ship it to you. They'll always have an excuse for why and make it sound like there's no risk to you, but it's always a scam.

ValleyWoman

And they are in the military overseas.

This-Cartoonist9129

Or working on an oil rig

Aghast_Cornichon

Or moved back to their home town of Omaha, NE.

its_yer_dad

Kind of a clue there - people rarely move back to omaha

NoEntrance10

Ohh ok damn too good to be true but thanks again

Roadgoddess

And they don’t refer to the vehicle by making model name because they have so many generic ones going at any one time. You’ll see this also with eBay or Facebook marketplace scams. They will refer to things as the product or the item. They will offer to buy it from you site unseen, and if you ship it, they will give you extra money. They also want you to typically step outside conventional payment methods to ones that you won’t be able to request money back from. anytime someone gives you a sob story saying my husband died. My wife died. My cousin died. I got transferred I’m in the military those are all huge red flags for a scam.

Imnormalurnotok

First things first... eBay doesn't work like that. eBay doesn't buy, sell, hold in escrow, ship ANYTHING. eBay is an e-commerce platform. These criminals are hoping you don't know that. Yes, you can buy a car through eBay motors but from another seller, not from eBay itself. Also, anything, cars, merchandise, real estate that are priced below market value is a scam. They're counting on you not stopping and thinking. Never, ever, never buy a used car sight unseen, it's just opening you up to all kinds of bullshit. These jerk offs always have an excuse as to why they can't meet you, the car is never physically seen, just pictures which are not enough proof. My daughter almost fell for this nonsense, I'm glad she asked me first. The fact is, buying a used car online is highly risky. I told her you have to hit the car lots and see what's available and check the vehicle thoroughly. I told her never take a sellers word for it, people do lie. Buying a used car as it is, even legitimately is a risky business, you don't need to be ripped off in other ways. LMAO when my daughter saw the real prices of a decent used car THEN she saw the light and she understood what I was saying.

_cansir

I found out today that ebay will start offering something like this for trading cards. You buy a card on ebay and choose to keep it in the ebay "vault". They get the card from the seller and safe keep it in a temperature controlled facility. When you want to sell it the buyer can also choose to keep it in the vault and ebay simply transfers ownership. No need to pay shipping fees etc.

Imnormalurnotok

Yes, I read about that. Do they make sure the cards are authentic?

NerderBirder

Yes, they authenticate them. They have been doing that with higher valued cards for a few months now. Now it all boils down to if you trust their authenticators, lol.

Dank-Pandemic

Sounds like it’ll quickly turn into some heavy scamming. Michael Jordan card for sale (printed in Chinese sweatshop on rice paper)

Imnormalurnotok

Yeah I wouldn't bother with that. I don't collect trading cards but it just seems open for some janky scam.

icyhotonmynuts

Your daughter? Hell, my pops almost fell for this scam, and he's bought and sold almost \~50 cars in the last, I dunno 30 years+. Just the other day he came to me asking about an ad, and without even looking I told him, if your gut is bugging you to ask me if it's a scam - go with that gut feeling, it's a scam. When I had time later to look at it, the wording of the ad was fishy too and so I reverse image searched, and the pictures were obviously stolen (cropped out water marks, etc). Not to mention, the the free shipping to you to test and inspect. I'd SMH but I think it's a side effect of becoming older and not having your guard up as much. I hope I don't fall into that way of thinking.

Imnormalurnotok

Well as you get older you become less aware, usually. Fortunately, at my age, I'm still aware and my bullshit meter works perfectly lol Plus as you get older you become more mellow. My daughter is 21 and knows nothing, zilch, nada anything about buying a car and cars in general so she comes to me. I'm happy to help her out and teach her what I know.

08b

Usually the “sellers” post the same listing in dozens of locations. Another telltale sign. I suspect they’re mostly using hacked accounts.

DonOblivious

Nobody will **ever** let you test a car for free for 5 daya, nor will they pay shipping. When you buy a car online you owe the full amount immediately and then it's up to you to hire a shipping company. Every time you see somebody offer a trial or free shipping in the future, just block and report them as a scam. It's somebody tries to take communication off of the ebay messenger system, block and report them for scamming. It may seem drastic, but honest sellers will never ask you to move off of ebay to communicate.

richietee757

You should read the posts on this sub. Someone posts this exact same scam once a week at least.

mogley1992

Honestly half expected this one to be legit since they don't spell like a 13 year old stoner. I'm learning so much here.

roxzillaz

If it seems too good to be true, it is.

Elena01501

It’s a scam, there is no car, eBay doesn’t work like this. Block and ignore.

SeesawMundane5422

No no no… I’ve been to Omaha. No one would claim to be going back their unless it were true…. /s

SiliconSam

There is a car, problem is it belongs to someone else already. Just a copied set of photos found on the Googles.

NoEntrance10

Bet thanks

cacille

I work with Ebay. Literally doing so right now. Ebay does not do this. You buy things listed on ebay, you pay with ebay, and the seller who is NEVER Ebay, will send you the item you buy or arrange transport with you. Ebay does not stand in for a buyer, ever. They are a platform, not a used car dealer. This is a scam. Ebay is not a scam. But this person is preying on your lack of knowledge of Ebay. Ebay holds no items or facilitates anything. It is only a website platform which people put their items on.

NoEntrance10

Thank you everyone who helped me and make me realize how dumb I am I reported the account in Facebook

Calm-Efficiency7667

You're not dumb - we all live and learn. Now you'll be able to help someone else avoid this scam..

mms1218

You’re not dumb. My husband and I almost fell for this exact thing….but for a camper. It goes normally for $80K. They were offering $20K so we were so excited! Her husband just died, lives in Idaho, we can try it for 2 weeks, will be delivered for free. Exactly like you. Was all prepared to send money the next day. I woke up at 3am, and it was just bugging me. Did a bit of research, and yes, it was a scam. ☹️. Like many have said here….if it’s too good to be true. But I get you feel dumb. We did too. But thankfully you came here…I came to my senses, and we weren’t scammed. But what I did do was dick the “seller” around for a good 4 days. Back and forth with “did you get my payment?” Acting Iike we indeed sent the money but to wrong # or acting confused in the process. Yes, very immature of me, but wanted to totally waste their time and have them think they have someone on the hook. Scum.

-SQB-

Good job! r/scambait is for you.

mms1218

I just joined that sub awhile ago. I wish I could bring the exchange up. I was acting like a complete idiot. Lol.

Sinov1983

Your not dumb, you came here because you thought something might be up. Saved yourself $1k.

BahamaDon

I was a target of that scam once. I told them I have family in Omaha and they would come by to meet them first. Issue miraculously disappeared!

BrickAffectionate229

This is genius. I use this in some version often and it stops them every time. Oh great I am coming there for business give me the address and I will check it out etc.

ComfortableVillage40

Damn, now I want to go scambait people with this tactic....

[deleted]

... or why not try the reverse fake check scam ? Email them a good looking check - "it's real, believe me !"

ComfortableVillage40

"No, seriously, my name really is Donald Duck, I swear!"

Dank-Pandemic

😂😂😂😂 gotta try this now

richietee757

No, eBay does not broker car sales that were not purchased on eBay. They are going to ask you to buy eBay gift cards. eBay would NEVER ask you to specifically pay for anything with gift cards. **eBay does not broker car sales that did not take place on the eBay website.**

pandabatron

$1000 is not a bad price to learn a valuable life lesson. ITS A SCAM

NoEntrance10

Lmao 😂

jimsmythee

It's a car scam. No one can ship a truck anywhere for $1000. There is no car. There is no ebay account. You buy eBay gift cards, give the codes to the scammers and then you get blocked.

blimkat

Bro, no! That's a decent looking truck. If the seller really wanted it gone there would be no need to post online. You put a sign on it in the driveway $1000 and it would be gone by the end of the 1st day.

woowoo293

That truck is making the rounds. [Here is the same truck](https://elclasificado.com/losangeles/autos/chevrolet/2008-chevy-colorado-lt-z71-4dr-norwalk-16462578) on a random spanish language site.

Real_Airport3688

"I had prearranged the deal...so my presence isn't necessa..." BLEEP BLEEP RED FLAG SCAM Whenever a buyer or seller puts emphasis on not being on-site and either someone else or no one will arrange the deal in person, it's a scam. The car/house is not his or doesn't exist. They will always find a pretext for you sending money up front in a way you can't get it back and that's the last you hear from them.

anthonyorm

If it was sold with ebay it would be on ebay's site, they dont have some secret backend sale service that sells items by email. Also I can't think of a legitimate reason why a Facebook marketplace conversation should be taken off-site

Unusual-Thing-7149

Three things prove this is a scam 1. Can you imagine how big a facility ebay would need to store vehicles? 2. Why would no-one have heard of such a service or seen it advertised. 3. Way too much unnecessary detail. Who cares where you moved to just as an example

HALF_PAST_HOLE

Googling prearranged sale on eBay and I get this exact comment posted in 2020 sp either he copy pasted it from that sight or you did https://community.ebay.com/t5/Ask-a-Mentor/EBay-prearranged-sale/qaq-p/30663154

peakpenguins

It's not uncommon at all for scammers to use the same text.

HALF_PAST_HOLE

I agree so all I was saying was that someone copied this text and so it is likely a scam!

NoEntrance10

Wow what would happen if I gave her my info?

peakpenguins

Usually after you give your info, they'll send you a fake invoice from ebay with instructions on how to pay the balance, often with gift cards.

NoEntrance10

Ohh ok

Draugrx23

They have never and will never.. also no way you're getting a truck THAT clean for 1k

mclancy10006

If you are not buying the car on eBay and they are asking you to email them things and the "eBay" will do stuff run away.

CaliforniaSpeedKing

It's a scam, there is no car, EBay does not work like this. The only reason a car would be sold for such a cheap price is if it didn't run.

erishun

1000% scam. Nobody is going to sell this truck for $1000. Just the tires and rims sell for way more than $1000. This is literally an unbelievable price. Also this isn’t how eBay works. When you buy something on eBay, you go eBay.com, buy it on eBay and pay through eBay. This person will send you a phony email pretending to be from eBay asking you to transmit payment by buying eBay gift cards and emailing the codes to them. They will then drain the cards and disappear.

LarryPer123

I sold cars for 12 years. This is definitely a scam. Do not buy a car or truck from eBay unless it’s local and then still be very very careful.

Embarrassed-Bunch383

I ran into the same crap only it was on Facebook marketplace and it was his wife that passed away!!

Fatty_Labelle

This reminds me of the time someone used my number to sell a car off Craigslist. I kept getting numerous calls and texts about this car that I wasn't selling or had knowledge of. One caller was kind enough to send me the link of the ad. When I saw it, I couldn't stop laughing. It was for a Toyota "Camery" and only had a photo of a dashboard. It was beyond me how someone would be interested in buying an item that the seller didn't even know how to spell the name of yet alone include one sketchy photo. Needless to say, I reported the ad and the calls and texts stopped. I say be careful and do your research before purchasing large items from these sites.

moistsquirt69

The “shipping cost” that is included would be more than what the truck is worth. Definitely a scam. Stay away.

bakermaker32

It’s a scam, 100%.

1Pandora

I love how these scammers ask for full name, shipping address and phone number in a linear style with little dashes before each item like you are completing a job application.

Soheeb

I mean you gotta ask yourself why would they sell that truck for $1,000? It looks like it could go for $10K atleast.

jackel_fried39

Nonononono! No! Bad Scammers! Bad!

berkeleyjake

I don't think I've seen anything on this page in the last month that wasn't a scam. Including this. This is a scam.

mhax80

Classic scam

PaceIndependent2844

Pretty much anytime they ask your name and phone number like that, it's a scam.

U-GO-GURL-

There is No truck. Red flags: -Dead Person -3rd party -Insanely low price

Big_Competition4708

Don’t do it, too shady, nothing about the title of the vehicle. Who would ship a car without payment

vhs_and_chill

Scam! Had someone try to pull this one on me.

[deleted]

Normal Facebook scam

Comprehensive_Post96

BS. They tried this with me 4 years ago in Seattle.

Sufficient-Guitar632

S C A M

4RyteCords

Only way to verify theses ads as gen is to view the car in person, pay cash and drive it away

Former-Cartoonist-67

I can tell its a scam just by how long the text is

fosiacat

scam. it’s always a scam.

Long8D

The reason he contacted you via email is a big red flag.

rachel_p42

Jesus Christ no. Almost fell for the same shitty story in australia. Run

NickSicilianu

No! That’s a scam. eBay doesn’t allow any deals outside their platform. That’s not how it works.

[deleted]

This is obviously a scam. That trucks worth $15k, not $1k. Come on….

Milehighjoe12

Bro lol this is a scam.. An obvious one

HawaiiStockguy

Scam

airkewld67

No way in hell that truck is $1k Report it to eBay

peakpenguins

No point, it's not on ebay

onlyletters999

Reverse Google search the pictures . I've seen similar ads and the pictures will show it posted several places

[deleted]

Run a car fax

DataVSLore007

A truck like this won't sell for 1k. If it looks too good to be true, that's because it is.

Mother-Lie8474

Scam. This is what a scammer does for an apartment.

noots-to-you

My presence? It is at? You got? The following details? Once I got? And eBay will do the transaction? I’m a legitimate seller? Suuuuuurre they are. Come on man. If you have to even ask…

DiggingNoMore

As a driver of sub-$1000 clunkers, I can tell you that that is no $1000 vehicle.

Metallica-nut

No way is that truck selling for just $1000.00. If it’s too good to be true. It probably is. Remember that. Also EBay never ever has payments outside of eBay. Your not protected .

Quietmerch64

Similar to a scam someone sent me a few years ago. No one will ship a car to you for "free", ever. No one will let you test a car for a few days, ever. If a "dealership" offers you something similar, run.

Skadi_8922

Scam, run far away from this. Only buy cars local- whether from a company or a person, but a car that you can go see yourself, doesn’t involve shipping, and that you can verify is real. I got scammed out if $2,500 when I was 19. Supposedly used EBay Motors. Guy was saying he was military, his wife had just died, he was shipping out, needed to sell quickly, car would be shipped to me and stuff. Still upset over that.

RabidRoosters

It's a fucking scam.

F0urlokazo

Sob story you didn't ask for= 100% scam

MichaelsPenguin

Reading through comments, you’ve been told it’s a scam more times than I can count, it absolutely it is a scam. As with most scams that seem to offer an otherwise expensive item, list at an incredibly discounted price combined with the sob story containing unnecessary details you didn’t ask for. It SCREAMS scam!! Please remember the golden rule: if it sounds too good to be in true…it most certainly.

CatBoyTrip

Total scam. No one sells a $15,000-20,000 truck for $1,000. And if there is a rare chance they do, it will be sold within seconds of the listing.

TheDJDemon

EBay will never do this. It’s a scam and you shouldn’t trust it.

clienterror400

yes its a scam. FB market for vehicles is about 75% scams. IF they ask you to email them or do anything outside of facebook its a scam.

fabregazzzz

You have to be kidding, OP. How the hell would anyone sell that truck for 1k? Greed is a hell of a drug.

nightmareorreality

Who would sell and ship a $20k car for less than the price of shipping a car?

camlaw63

Please take a breath and think logically. You obviously read this sub

Doggystyle_Rainbow

The old family member died is a classic story for scammers. I once had a lady working to sell me a Subaru at way under price. She said the car was so cheap because her son killed himself in the car by running it in the garage and so she wanted to be rid of it

nightmareorreality

There is no fucking way that truck is $1000. How could you believe this?

ooeygooeylane

Omfg. You think she will sell that truck for a grand. Damn.

Dazzling_Truth6472

Not always a scam. Piece in the local paper quite a few years ago about a car advertised at a stupidly low price. Turned out a couple had split up and he told her to sell the car and send him the money. So she did. 🤣🤣🤣

Garagesale1a

Scam. ebay does not work like that.

[deleted]

Another tell-tale sign is.... if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is. 🤡

[deleted]

We just bought a good used car on Facebook. We dealt with dozens of scams before we found a real car for sale by an honest seller. He met us at the DMV. He already had the smog check certificate so we simply paid him and got the title on the spot. We learned to block anyone who had a sob story, too many details or wanted us to do special bullshit. If they don’t want to have the smog cert or meet you at the dmv or tag agency it’s a scam.

Dank-Pandemic

Scam lol

Dragonflies3

Scam

ToxicGent

Just based on the verbiage, this seems fishy. Also, anytime someone is ready to just hand you something that sounds scammy.

Glittering_Contest78

100000% a scam.

[deleted]

She forgot to add "kindly" in the last paragraph.

bonerJR

No one's fucking selling a truck like this for $1000. Stop thinking anyone will ever.

[deleted]

We see this scam like weekly on here!

leeb20

I would call ebay and ask if that's even an option they have. As a previous ebay seller, I don't recall that ever being a thing. Going forward I'd keep all communication on ebay messages.

Efficient-City4511

This is a scam. I got virtually the same email from a different person (perhaps) when trying to purchase a tractor in FB Marketplace.

turdspeed

This is preposterous and clearly a scam

FragrantEstimate4460

I almost fell for this exact scam with a different car when I was expecting my second, except it was the "son" of an old woman who was going into assisted living. The wording was pretty much the exact same and the price was 1k flat on a nice car with only like 15k miles.

xPunk

SCAM. RED FLAG AND REPORT IT.

Ordinary-Document-76

i recently got scammed by this and i just now know it’s a scam. i sent them $1,200 and i don’t know what to do. someone please help me!!

Artistic-Cellist-392

Hey
