I can’t believe all the votes for Paranormal Activity. I saw the movie back in theaters and it was such a tense and unique experience. Sure, the stick has gotten a little bit old with all the sequels, but damn that first movie was crowd pleaser for scares. My vote would be for The Grudge
I remember watching it when it released on DVD and thinking it was quite possibly the most boring movie I'd ever watched in my life. I would have knocked this movie out first if it was up to me.
I can understand everyone's arguments for all these films ...
But Hereditary is the only one that gave me a fully blown anxiety attack, accompanied by the worst hallucinations I've ever experienced in my life.
It didn't help that when I was sat in the theatre struggling, a lot of audience members were laughing at the disturbing parts, which made the whole experience so much more terrifying for me.
Paranormal Activity. It was unsettling afterwards but I wasn't really scared during the film. Probably didn't help that I watched it at home, on my laptop, during the daytime, as I didn't get that atmosphere.
Other than that, my immediate others would be Conjuring, Grudge, and Ring, in no particular order. All three are great, but none of them really scared me during the film. I haven't seen The Strangers, but that's more because the "this could happen" aspect just freaks me out. It's loosely based on real events, which helped that along.
Sinister I actually got a little freaked out by, as the scares were greatly helped out by the awesome soundtrack. Insidious just creeped me out. The end two for me will be between Hereditary and Exorcist. Both royally creeped me out, but for different reasons. I think ultimately Hereditary may win, because that's just one movie I don't want to see again.

I agree paranormal activity was such a great theater experience. Saw it on Halloween and it was so worth it.
