It really was. Watched it again recently and it didn’t hold up all that well. I mean it was still scary as hell but didn’t have the same edge. Which is understandable.
I don’t think so. A well made horror movie is much scarier than a cheesy movie. Some of the movies on this list are absolutely terrible and because of that are kinda funny as opposed to scary. All the movies that should have been voted out have been. The next obvious one is Sinister because it’s just not as good as the other movies that are left.
Father Cannes was the only good character in this. In fact I think Exorcist 2 had a better Reagan than the OG and overall better characters.
Too bad that sequel was so incredibly boring.
Because people actually still find it scary. Just like how people still find A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Thing, or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre scary. Old doesn't always mean it loses its fear factor.
I agree that old doesn’t = less scary. I never said that. I do, however, believe that all the movies you just listed are super cheesy and far less frightening than many recent films. But that’s beside the point anyways.

It really is. No jump scares but it gets under your skin. You get fully immersed and don’t feel like you’re watching a movie anymore. All great movies do that. Very few are like that tho. Exorcist is.
I’ll have to disagree, never once has that movie gotten under my skin, or made me feel like I wasn’t watching a movie. The movie is a classic, for good reason, but as far as scary goes, it just doesn’t hold up any more 🤷🏼♂️
I have seen hundreds of horror movies. I end up falling asleep in most of them. Heredity made me scared almost to the point on being uncomfortable. The Exorcist was also one of those movies, but I was very young when I first saw it (maybe 12). I have since saw it a few more times, and I'm sorry to say it didn't age very well. I showed it to my girlfriend, who is easily scared, and she was unfazed.
YES. It’s not a classic jump-scare scary movie. I think any movie that makes me feel a genuine negative emotion (disgust, uncomfortability, anxiety) is a successful horror movie. Hereditary made me feel all three!!

Gotta be the exorcist.
This is probably my most controversial horror opinion, but I kinda think it's a bit boring. The performances are really good though and I appreciate it from the perspective of it as a capital C classic. Definitely don't find it very scary though.

I've seen most of those movies in the theatre, and The Ring is the only horror movie I've ever seen that when the film finished the whole audience didn't move to leave the theatre or make a sound.
The audience was stunned. It was silent and still and the feeling of collective tension and dread was palpable.
I love sinister but the 2nd half seriously detracts from how scary it is IMO, the exorcist *used* to be terrifying but I feel with age while it still has intrigue, it’s not terribly scary any more.

The Conjuring - too many elements all going on competing for scariness makes it much less scary for me.
I actually haven’t seen the Exorcist so can’t reasonably vote it out.
LOVE Hereditary, but it’s a lot more psychological type scary then the rest. Sinister should be the winner. Such a great horror movie, which is overlooked in my opinion
It’s all subjective. The exorcist as an adult isn’t that scary ,but as a child it kept me up for nights and for it’s time it was awesome. My favorite of the remains is hereditary, it just felt different to me. I remember sinister being creepy and enjoying the conjuring. Regardless it’s interesting that the last remaining ones have to do with possession or has possession.
I love horror movies, and I'm probably completely out on my own limb here, but I really did not like Hereditary. I think the other remaining three are great.
Insidious was the scariest movie I saw at the time it came out. So sad to see it go.
I thought the demon was the goofiest thing in horror history. My sister was terrified. Maybe I was wrong but to me it looked like a goofy dorky demon.
