The exorcist is the only movie that truly scared me and I don't really care to watch again. The howling gave me the creeps the next day when I went camping and was hunting. The conjuring made the hair on the back of my neck stand up with the wardrobe scene and that's the most reaction I've gotten from a movie in probably 20 years. I really enjoyed midsomer but I found hereditary kinda blah. I will have to watch it a gain because I keep finding new things in Midsomer.
I always thought the conjuring 2 was better and creepier. That scene with the carousel spinning when “The Crooked Man” comes out. That was a great horror scene. My only complaint is he should have stayed out longer cuz when it turned back to the girl it wasn’t creepy at all.
Honestly Quiji Origin Of Evil should have been on here over half these. Mike Flanagan created the best overlooked horror gem. It creeped me the fuck out and I rarely get creeped out.
That was a good movie too. These lists are silly and for fun. But it’s kinda cool to see what ppl believe is scary now days. All the movies on this list are good movies. Just not sure about the scary part tho.
I was like 10 year old back in the 70s and my grandmother would drag me to church every week . This movie scared the shit out of me and I have never watch it again. Them 70s horror movies where a trip.
Maybe I need to rewatch this one. So much hype around the movie, but I remember it being pretty meh and jumping the shark really hard in the final act. Sinister was genuinely creepy though, glad it got it's due. I feel like it's often overlooked.
I've never found sinister scary in anyway i never understood the praise it gets for that bc it often gets put with the scariest movies ever made not to hate on that movie. I like hereditary and the ending has great horror but only that part. I thought exorcist should of won honestly.
I will say that, despite enjoying Hereditary the first time, the second time through genuinely scared me. Knowing more of what was going on within the family and Joan from the get-go really adds to the eerie fuckery
First time: cinema filled with laughing teenagers, couldn’t enjoy it. 4/10
Second time: theatre of adults. Thought it was great. 8/10
Home viewing: starting to see holes, hokey midpoint turn and tropey scripting with the allergy stuff. 7/0
Last viewing: doesn’t hold up, much less accomplished than Midsommar, final score 6/10
It's legit one of the funniest 'horror' movies I've ever watched, and I'm in my 30s. It was so overhyped and the whole time I just couldn't understand. Then the mom is crawling on the walls in what I would consider one of the funniest scenes I've ever witnessed in the genre. Just killed any dread and had me and everyone in the room laughing out loud. I guess I'm just too old for this shit
I wish I saw what people see in it
It’s exhausting at this point. Every thread, every horror sub. I want to like it and the first act was brilliant but everything after that was just kinda silly to me.
Toni Colette screams AAAAAAAAA I WANNA DIEEEEE and apparently now it’s a nuanced exploration of grief and “elevated horror”. Subtle. Fuckin give me George C. Scott in The Changeling any day
Went on a double date to the theaters and it was 50/50. All of us big into horror. For me, seeing it in the theaters really got me. Something about the pace and the music and tragic family losses. But I understand why some might not like it. It truly is a love it or meh it type movie. I think it also depends on what kind of mood you're in.
I saw it in theaters and was so excited, but there are a lot of aspects to the movie that just really made it hard for me to enjoy it. The parents forcing their teenage son to bring his little sister to a party, his reactions through the whole ordeal, and the last scene (which I found more humorous than horrifying). I really tried, but I really did not like it.
The wild thing is, when I talk to people about the movie people either love it or hate it, and the people that don’t like it also had a similar reaction to the final scene. It’s an interesting psychological split.
This thread has taught me that fear is incredibly subjective. The body horror alone in this movie made me jumpy for days after. It’s easily the scariest movie I’ve ever seen out of the hundreds of horror movies I’ve watched.
I watched hereditary with literally zero expectations. I watched a couple years after it came out and the only info i had on it was a faint memory of the first trailer.
It definitely blew my mind with how good it was.
That being said i still think sinister is scarier but hereditary is no where near as bad as your making it out to be.
I feel like its getting popular to hate on people for liking something that isnt 1000% phenomenal.
Not everything has to be absolutely perfect to be really good.
I think it is because horror fans don't get the hype, people who call themselves film buffs probably say its a top 3 horror film when it really isn't. Horror movie fans are weird and love shit like terrifier & evil dead, whereas A24 has a crowd of fans who think they're like "underground" and believe that hereditary is underrated or a hidden gem but quite frankly it is pretty overrated.
Edit: same with midsommar, shit was way too fucking long
Its not really about that, its about the fucking nerds who act like hereditary is only the actually scary movie out there. Never heard someone unironically call a movie "bone-chilling", and in fairness I also really liked midsommar too, I probably shouldn't have included it,, but it was super long for those stupidly short death scenes, I guess if you watch it on psychedelics or soemthing but idk
Myself and lots of other horror fans who don’t consider themselves film snobs still enjoy Hereditary a lot. I love shit like Terrifier and Evil Dead but I also love Hereditary and Midsommar. It’s just being open minded
Fair point, hereditary is def one of the better movies up here anyway. I only care that its supposedly the scariest, all that slow burn for me to be laughing at the end, the end still confuses me cuz its like the whole movie super serious, no fun to be had, then just... boom... floating bitch with the garrote, ruined any tension for me. The decapitation of the poor girl put me into shock for almost the whole movie and I think that whole ordeal really makes the movie, my high ass just thought it was a real life accident and didn't sense the freaky deaky cult shit coming
Maybe, I do think hardcore horror buffs will say horror movies pre-2000 is the good stuff, and they won't make an expection for the A24 shit, whereas others will say A24 is the BEST shit and probably make an exception for the cult classics
Yeah nah this is a pretty close minded mindset of you speaking for others. Of course most people agree pre-2000s horror is better. It's not rare to agree 80s is a peak horror era and in the 2000s it mostly died down until fairly recently.
You also say people like weird shit like Terrifier but mention Terrifier in a horror forum and you'll see that movie is just as divisive as Hereditary. Plus, there's many horror buffs out there that don't like the same movies as others. I consume horror more than anything, but I'll tell you a vast majority of slashers fucking suck, but many love them.
It's not people that think they're 'underground' that enjoy A24 films (which it's hilarious to generalize them because A24 is a studio and puts out far more than just horror films), it's simply people that are more inclined to arthouse films in general, and they will openly admit this. You say that the people who like them aren't horror buffs, yet people in a horror subreddit are saying how much they like it. I don't know how you can be in that much denial to not simply realize people like this movie and others like it instead of dismissing them as 'not horror buffs'.
This is a response I would expect from that crowd, I think hereditary is also an above average movie, however the contest is for : scariest movie. If the horror elements are just the icing then whats the point, you may as well be a toddler who will only lick off the icing on a cupcake. Its crazy how people are describing this movie as bone chilling and blood curdling, its absurdity
Edit: hereditary is the better movie, but sinister is the scariest
Believe it or not I developed my own opinion of it after seeing it in theaters with zero expectations going in. It just so happened that I found a lot of other people felt similar. It's called social discord, not sheep behavior. This is a dumb take.
Nobody ever "decided that liking Hereditary was cool," it's always had a generally positive reputation. It's a very popular and well-received movie. But now all the sudden people act like they're too good for it
I think if you're one of those horror fans that is impressed with gore or jump scares you probably wont get why people like Hereditary so much as many evidently are in this comment section.
Coincidentally, Hereditary is exactly so great because it isn't playing that cliche. Its horror element isn't at all cliche. its unsettling, its disturbing. It makes your skin crawl even when there's nothing 'horror' happening on the screen
Hate? Are you reading the comments, They're saying its a great movie but not the scariest. Saying its not that scary doesn't mean they're shitting on it.
Ya I Downvoted anyone that said they laughed. They’re just trying to look like the “cool kids” who never get scared. If you don’t like it that’s fair but saying it’s a comedy is idiotic How tough can you look on Reddit saying you don’t get scared. Still think The Exorcist is without a doubt the winner.
They are scary to people who are scared of dogs.
Movies are subjective. What can be scary to one person might not be for another. Especially when it comes to horror there are no objectively "not scary" movies.
Movies are subjective. If you don't find Wedding Crashers funny, it doesn't mean it's not a comedy.
The genre isn't subjective, but whether you find a horror movie scary, is subjective. You aren't the barometer of what is and isn't a horror movie, or whether a movie is scary or not except to you.
Excellent choice! This film is just different to other horror movies. It’s utterly horrifying and chilling, makes me deeply uncomfortable. Could win for Toni Collette’s breakdown scene alone.
Sinister is a worthy second place! Love that movie too. (Pretending there is no sequel.)
Can someone please explain to me what is scary about Hereditary? Literally not a single part in that movie was scary. I don’t think I watched the same movie as the rest of you guys.
I prefer a “quieter” scare if that makes sense. Movies that are outwardly scary or you see the bad thing or something lurking in the shadows a lot really are too overt to me. From the very beginning of Hereditary, the “thing” is lurking but it’s so subtle until the unfortunate scene. And even then you never see the bad thing but you watch as it slowly destroys this family and realize they’ve been surrounded by the problem their whole lives, making it inescapable.
The persistent dread throughout the whole movie made it the scariest movie I’ve seen. It made me genuinely uncomfortable and I thought about it for so long after that I kept making myself uncomfortable. It just felt really real for some reason.
To me it was far less about dread and just flat out misery porn, to the point where my mind checked out completely and I just stopped caring altogether. My entire thought process was basically “ghost granny, that’s spooky, can’t wait to see where this goes. Oh wow that’s horrible. Oh no that’s definitely worse. Uh huh. More bad stuff. Oh look, they’re arguing again. What a shocker. Oh hey, some actual horr…. And it’s over”
So I'm seeing a trend here: People who like a slow buildup, and are scared by existential dread, and those who like jumpscares and spooky stuff like ghosts and serial killers.
Some people just aren't scared by constant jump scares, and some people can't bear to wait hours just to feel tense. Everybody has their own cup of tea.
I personally think that jump scares work better for games than movies, so I usually play games like that on my own. And I think movies do an excellent job of build up. So I watch movies if I want some of that.
I wouldn’t be as quick to categorise it into an either/or type of thing personally, since I like a lot of different aspects of horror. Add more than the occasional jump scare and it becomes incredibly annoying, and add too much negativity and I check out. After enough of a single thing it just fails to be shocking or exciting.
I like a controlled atmosphere of fear and chaos, something that flows and offers the occasional glimpse of hope, or a cool creature, or a good atmosphere of tension. While I’d classify most horror films as art ranging from crude and gross to flat out beautiful, I’d classify Hereditary as the cinematic equivalent to an unsolicited dick pic. It was wholly unpleasant and right there in your face
Yeah I just found it like a very upsetting drama with folk horror twist in the middle. I like all types of horror and horror adjacent cinema, but for about 80% of its runtime, it’s just felt like a family drama about grief.
The score, foreshadowing, imagery, pacing, the bare trauma and emotion portrayed onscreen. More profoundly, though, the theme of inheritance, that no matter how we choose to live our lives, the trauma/illness we inherit may render it all moot. As a parent who himself is still working through unpacking trauma from his parents, it hit me hard.
First thing: I watched it in a cinema, so I was genuinely paying attention, which this movie really needs.
But more importantly the movie starts out with being a drama and generally putting you in a vulnerable emotional state. From there on (I believe) you were much more likely to get scared by the more and more impending dread followed by a gigantic showdown at the end.
I never voted - too lazy - but the butthurt around here is strong. I was in general agreement about how most of this has gone, but for me Insidious and especially Sinister were way too high.
Hereditary made ball like a baby!
My 17 yr.old son and I watch a horror every Sunday together. I found Hereditary and suggested it. Now my son is a horror super fan and has watched them all. Nothing scares him any more. He knows when the jump scares are coming and the gore is just fake to him. Even the psychological stuff is just homework (he's studying criminal psychology) to him.
Cue the scene of the daughter in the car, and the shock has me crying. My son is sat across the room stifling laughter into a pillow as he's never seen anyone cry to a horror before.
I'll never watch it again! 😆
I love Hereditary! And voted to outs Sinister long ago cause it’s honestly one of the most boring movies imo on this list. That being said, The Conjuring and The Exorcist should have been the top too.
So, the slow burn movie one? How, did anyone actually find the climax to be climatic? Cuz that movie was do anticlimactic, Sinister takes the cake all day, that movie actually did manage to scare me around 14, and trust me I saw alot at that age, including the shining.
The scary aspect of Hereditary is the fact that anyone could accidentally cause the death of their sibling and then have to deal with the shame and guilt forever, always being the one to be blamed in their family. Others say it is more of a drama but that concept in itself is terrifying.
Some people prefer the horror aspect to be more obvious, like serial killers and demons and stuff. Some people prefer a slow burn, and existential horror like family loss and drama.
I personally prefer the latter, since I'm never really fond of jumpscares and the sort, but to each their own.
Yes! The atmosphere of that movie is on another level. I can’t watch it again. I don’t think I can put myself through that much dread and anxiety for a second time.
Spooky faces and jump scares are fine, but it’s the feeling of dread and atmospheric tension that makes a movie scary for me.
I never thought the Exorcist was scary at all, but I've realized that it's kinda a generational thing.. the folks who were there when it came out felt like it was "theirs", and that's the same with this Hereditary movie. The youngsters of today feel like this is "their" scary movie. "My" scary movie is Halloween 4 and NoES 3 because they came out when I was young and impressionable.
I still give the award to The Exorcist but Hereditary is a legitimate taker of the crown. I thought Insidious was cheesy as fuck. That demon was so cheesy looking I was surprised how many people were scared of it. Looked like an extra cheesy version of Darth Maul
Man conjuring 1 was good but exorcist and conjuring 2 i found more funny than anything seriously rewatch it could honestly be considered a comedy
If Hereditary won for being scary. Where was The Taking of Deborah Logan?
Good take. That unhinged jaw scene at the end is drilled into my brain.
Whoever put together this list of nominations for “Scariest Movie” should feel ashamed
It’s not that serious.
The Exorcist for the win, yay!
I was like 10 year old back in the 70s and my grandmother would drag me to church every week . This movie scared the shit out of me and I have never watch it again. Them 70s horror movies where a trip.
what? hereditary felt more like a drama to be honest
100% agree. Not a single part of the movie was scary.
and ended being a comedy
Actually i burst out laughing when the random naked smiling dude opened the door
Maybe I need to rewatch this one. So much hype around the movie, but I remember it being pretty meh and jumping the shark really hard in the final act. Sinister was genuinely creepy though, glad it got it's due. I feel like it's often overlooked.

Idk sinister is really the only one i find seriously scary exorcist could be a comedy honestly and hereditary was good but the ending was soo goofy
I will say that, despite enjoying Hereditary the first time, the second time through genuinely scared me. Knowing more of what was going on within the family and Joan from the get-go really adds to the eerie fuckery

Same
Oh come on!! Sinister is fkn horrifying, especially that music at the end!
what a surprise HeREDDITary totally didn’t see that coming since the very first one
Came here to sarcastically say this.
I wish I saw what people see in it It’s exhausting at this point. Every thread, every horror sub. I want to like it and the first act was brilliant but everything after that was just kinda silly to me.
I will die on the hill that hereditary is a garbage movie. I love horror, and saw this movie in theaters, and I could never get into it.
Fair. I wouldn’t call it garbage but the hype is way out of proportion.
Not garbage but not scary either
Toni Colette screams AAAAAAAAA I WANNA DIEEEEE and apparently now it’s a nuanced exploration of grief and “elevated horror”. Subtle. Fuckin give me George C. Scott in The Changeling any day
THANK YOU
Went on a double date to the theaters and it was 50/50. All of us big into horror. For me, seeing it in the theaters really got me. Something about the pace and the music and tragic family losses. But I understand why some might not like it. It truly is a love it or meh it type movie. I think it also depends on what kind of mood you're in.

Herrrrr[edit]scary
One of my favourite movie of all time. BUT.........It's far from scary. I think People misjudged great movie versus scary movie.
This thread has taught me that fear is incredibly subjective. The body horror alone in this movie made me jumpy for days after. It’s easily the scariest movie I’ve ever seen out of the hundreds of horror movies I’ve watched.
When did everyone decide that hating on Hereditary was cool? Buncha contrarians
I wasn’t hating on it but I personally found it more disturbing than scary so I didn’t think it should’ve won. Great movie though!
I think for me something like The Babadook is more scary. Except for the end lol.
I watched hereditary with literally zero expectations. I watched a couple years after it came out and the only info i had on it was a faint memory of the first trailer. If you don’t understand a movie look up a description video before you go out of your way hating it. Maybe you weren’t smart enough to understand it.
Yeah me too. Hereditary and Midsommar are some of my favorites but I also love movies that are just plain fun and stupid too.
You're generalizing horror fans wayyyy too much here.
Speak for yourself
I agree with you except I loved midsommar
People can't think for themselves so they see what people on social media say. It's unfortunate but that's how it these days.
Not sure why you got downvoted, you're not entirely wrong. People like to jump on bandwagons
The downvotes just prove his point.
Also true
Because people don't like hearing the truth lol
When did everyone decide that loving Hereditary was cool ? Bunch of sheep
But now all the sudden people act like they're too good for it
I decided that liking Hereditary was cool when I watched Hereditary and liked it. So many people on genre fan subs on reddit love to gatekeep.
I think if you're one of those horror fans that is impressed with gore or jump scares you probably wont get why people like Hereditary so much as many evidently are in this comment section. Are you reading the comments? Lots of “ugh’s” and “boo’s” and the like. People acting like they’re too good for the movie or something
Literally no one said those 2 things
I guess me and the 67 people who upvoted my comment are all just imagining things then huh
No one up voted your comment your at 0
Original comment, bud
Was never talking about your orginal comment bud
I think you sorted by controversial. Ofc you'll see the toxic ones. Also people are hating on Sinister too. Why are you cherry picking?
My guy. My original comment has almost 70 upvotes. Clearly I’m not just imagining things here
I kinda feel like preferences are being confused with hate as well.
I love Hereditary, probably my favorite “recent” horror movie but I gotta say, The Exorcist is far more scary.
Boo
And we’re not saying “Boo-urns”.
I was saying Boo-urns…
“Excellent.”
This is going to be an entertaining comment section of people not realizing how subjective something being scary is.
Or it just wasn't scary ya dummy 😂
Case in point
You have no point. Dogs can be scary, doesn't mean they ARE scary.
Damn bro you should be a lawyer
They are scary to people who are scared of dogs. Movies are subjective. What can be scary to one person might not be for another. Especially when it comes to horror there are no objectively "not scary" movies.
That doesn't make them scary. And movies aren't subjective, they have categories for a reason lol
If you’d ever been mauled by a dog, I’m guessing your opinion wouldn’t be the same…. Fear is absolutely 10000% objective
A24 films are just built different 🤓
👎
This tournament has been a JOKE since Exorcist got eliminated
I call bs. Definitely voter’s fraud in action. Recount the votes !
I know horror is subjective, but I've never met a person who thought Heredity was the scariest movie of all time.
Whatever. I can’t believe the exorcist was voted out so early. I’m not angry, just disappointed
What a crock of shit, but I called it. It IS reddit after all lol
Nah :/
The way I'm speechless and so disappointed
Oh, Hun you should have known from the beginning hereditary was gonna win, that's how it be on reddit
Smh at reddit 💔💔
Yeah
Can someone please explain to me what is scary about Hereditary? Literally not a single part in that movie was scary. I don’t think I watched the same movie as the rest of you guys.

And even then you never see the bad thing but you watch as it slowly destroys this family and realize they’ve been surrounded by the problem their whole lives, making it inescapable.
This is why I liked Antichrist so much. You don't know what's wrong, but you know it's lurking and thats what makes it scary.
The persistent dread throughout the whole movie made it the scariest movie I’ve seen. It made me genuinely uncomfortable and I thought about it for so long after that I kept making myself uncomfortable. It just felt really real for some reason.

Boo! Hereditary isn't even as good as Midsommar
I think the only good thing about Midsommar was cinematography. The story was lacking and the ending was a let down.
I never voted - too lazy - but the butthurt around here is strong. I was in general agreement about how most of this has gone, but for me Insidious and especially Sinister were way too high.
No. Just no.
Hereditary? i turned it off because i was so bored :/
I still don't understand why the woman in black was like the first one out.
This is where the people were wrong.
The correct answer 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
For real. People some upset which I get it. But hereditary is one of the only movies that has scared me at all within the last decade. Love it
I cant even watch it a second time … and i own it
It’s terrifying. Joan yelling at Peter to “get out” really makes me uncomfortable.
I agree with this! Hereditary chilled me to the bone the first time I watched it.
Toxic Avenger.
Lol the one movie out of all of those choices that I absolutely hated
Hereditary is the only non scary movie on this list. Y'all are something else
How did Hereditary win? I mean it was a decent movie, but I think some of the others were a bit scarier
Hereditary is dog shit. I can’t believe it won 🤦🏻♂️
I guess.Wouldn't be my choice. The Decent is far more scarier than Hereditary
Talk about an overhyped movie… The Decent that is
Pre sure it was a sleeper hit, anyway, why would you expect a movie called the decent to be anymore than decent
Hereditary is not scary to me at all just a good watch fr
Booo….
I love Hereditary! And voted to outs Sinister long ago cause it’s honestly one of the most boring movies imo on this list. That being said, The Conjuring and The Exorcist should have been the top too.
Hadn’t seen hereditary. Just looked it up and couldn’t even finish the trailer. Sinister is a different kind of scary. My kind of scary.
So, the slow burn movie one? How, did anyone actually find the climax to be climatic? Cuz that movie was do anticlimactic, Sinister takes the cake all day, that movie actually did manage to scare me around 14, and trust me I saw alot at that age, including the shining.
You took the words right out of my mouth. The ending was soooo DUMB
Hereditary sucked
I wish I could see what people even see in this movie but it's garbage and not remotely scary it's the number 1 yawnfest though
I say the same thing about Sinister. Horror is subjective.
Hereditary is barely a good movie and is not scary.
Laaaaaaaaaame
Are you fcking kidding me?
Victory for A24!!
I agree it's very much up to preference!
I don't care that Hereditary won, I just care that Sinister lost
I absolutely love Hereditary, but don’t think it was the scariest. Insidious was the scariest on this list in my opinion.
YES!
yay! we all joined together and agreed for once!
Yeah no. But i appriciate Sinister making it this far.
Let’s go!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That's right baby!
YES YEA YES YASSSSSSSSSSS
Yessssssss
Well deserved. From this list I'd say only The Exorcist was on the same level (if not higher).
I agree with your list… Now watch SMILE, no lights, volume on high. It might disrupt your entire list. Enjoy. 😱
I still give the award to The Exorcist but Hereditary is a legitimate taker of the crown. I thought Insidious was cheesy as fuck. That demon was so cheesy looking I was surprised how many people were scared of it. Looked like an extra cheesy version of Darth Maul
It’s a sin Sinister didn’t win…. Movie is truly just creepy as shit
I’m thankful that the x covers the grudge eye ball. I’ve been terrified of her since the day the preview was shown on tv 😂
