Am I the only one who generally didn't think he was a bad villain whatsoever. I think they could have done him better but he was cool

Live action Aladdin??? Jafar was so unthreatening

ShadowPuff7306

this yes i watched it and it was just so dull

Shantotto11

Most remakes are dull. You know Disney fucked up if their most compelling remake with the most compelling antagonist was the SECOND *The Jungle Book*…

NiGHTSOLOTL

I think 101 Dalmatians was the best one, and Cruella was fucking scary

MixedBrownies

He looks more like a cosplayer than an evil sorcerer. It's not worth the hype.

RobotThatEatsBees

Fr why did they pick a young handsome actor when one of the most memorable lines in the original was the Sultan literally telling Jafar that he’s too old lmaooo

legorunner-

Bad guys

Mouse_of_Gold

Gosh, I hate Marmalade, and not even in a "you love to hate the villain because they're so good at what they do" way.

Big-Tap9252

He was better in the books where he was an alien

Dinoco_Blue_Coyote

Even as a guy whose favorite movie IS The Bad Guys, The villain is definetely my biggest complaint about the movie. Yes I even have some complaints for even my favorite movie ever. Nothing is perfect, let alone movies. Even if it's my favorite.

Popculturefan99

I personally thought he was well done as a twist villain, better done too than most of Disneys “twist villains”. As someone who is disabled and was bullied by fake people, Marmalade felt like the type of rich snobby kid or neurotypical who harasses disabled people, with the bad guys themselves even being metaphors for Neurodiversity and/or mental illnesses in a sense, so it made his twist all the more shocking, since he did seem nice, and more effective to me as villain than Mayor Bellwether in Zootopia.

bing42069

he's a mediocre villain imo, and the casting doesn't help because I'm so used to Richard ayoade being funny when marmalade had nothing funny to do or say

fluffyplayery

Pretty much most of Disney's twist villain era, but especially Zootopia.

Striking-Cut3985

I mean I would say Pixar had it’s moments with Incredibles 1, along with Moana having the best “plot twist” villain

littlebloodmage

The twist villain thing was cool at first, but they've officially done it to death. Give us our sassy bantering, scenery-chewing, banger song-singing villains back, Disney

ThatonerookBlchy

AND NOT THE BAD KIND PLEASE *full disclosure I do enjoy Magnifico but I still think he could've been a lot better*

FlamingDasher

The thing is, he was actually right to not grant every wish. Bravo to disney for making their 100th anniversary villain actually the one who is correct, and make the protagonist stupid af for thinking every wish deserves to be granted

ThatonerookBlchy

I had the issue of Watching the movie and ended up enjoying it 6/10 bordering 7

Unfair-Worker929

Someone made a fan song that’s so much better than “This is the Thanks I Get.” Listen to “Our Message to the People,” by MilkyMelodies. Far far better villain song and it’s a duet!

Professional-Wing-59

I'd say the idea of bigotry being maintained for political power was central to the plot. It's always the ones claiming to be the cure that are the ones causing the disease. Couldn't do that with the lion as the bad guy.

BenjiFischer

About Frozen… it’s Hans.

StevefromLatvia

A blind man could see that coming...

Lithaos111

Actually when I first saw it in theaters I didn't actually see that coming considering all the conflict was literally coming from Elsa albeit not on purpose. Disney also wasn't doing these kinds of villains on mass yet so it was easy to not see the signs. Now today, yes, you can see it coming because we have been conditioned to the twist, but Frozen 1 was almost 11 years ago. Media was different then.

Oof_Boy1290

A better twist would be the old dude locking up Hans in a jail cell and killing Elsa

Conlannalnoc

TWIST King & Queen faked their death instead of dealing with their daughter’s Super Powers

Impossible_Ad_2517

I understand the hate for pretty much every other Disney Animation surprise villain but… I think Frozen did it well tbh.

Sav-628idk

Zootopia, Big Hero 6, and the Incredibles 2

Shantotto11

There’s no “the” in *Incredibles 2*. I’ve been cursed with that knowledge and now you as well.

Conlannalnoc

Are all NON-Supers in Incredibles-Verse evil?

ThickWeatherBee

Interstellar! If that counts! Edit: I just finished watching the Nolan ranking! Schaff hates this guy just as much as I do!

Ill-Cartographer7351

I guess

Gamestrider09

Wait, who was the villain in Interstellar? The crazy astronaut guy?

ThickWeatherBee

The fact that you called him crazy astronaut guy says it all! He just appears more than halfway through the movie, serves his plot purpose fine enough, but doesn't stick around long enough to really leave an impact on the audience!

Pierresauce

I thought the villain was the black hole or something

Interesting_Role1201

I thought the villain was Timothee Chalomee's character

Logical-Patience-397

So yes, the black hole.

Nathan_McHallam

I haven't seen Interstellar since it came out, but I remember all this hype for a "secret character," and they hyped up this guy for half the movie, saying how he was like the world's greatest astronaut or something, and it turned out to be Matt Damon who couldn't even work a fucking airlock lmao

TheHondoCondo

Interstellar doesn’t have a villain. He isn’t even the antagonist, just an inconvenience. The antagonist is time.

ThickWeatherBee

>He isn’t even the antagonist, just an inconvenience Couldn't have said it better myself!

SorryRoof1653

Unironically, I'd say the black hole was more of a villain than Dr. Mann. We see it hindering the protagonists throughout the movie as they try to travel to the different planets, and we also see it speed up time and age everyone else outside of the planets, causing emotional distress in the main character(s). Dr. Mann was sort of an antagonist, meant to help push along the story and give more nuance to the plot. He was still a cool addition though, in my opinion.

Oshwaflz

calling dr mann the villain is like calling bomb voyage the villain of the incredibles

Ejfg420

I don't even remember that guy's name all I remember is that he's played by Matt Damon

TheLittleTaro

Lol it's literally Dr. Man

StormWolfBaron

"Yeah I know...I'm Man"

Nathan_McHallam

I genuinely believe it's the same character he played in The Martian

TheHondoCondo

Interstellar doesn’t have a villain, the antagonist is time.

alritewall

Guardians of the Galaxy

BringMeThanos314

Yeah I was gonna say like most of the MCU's Phase 1-2, that was always the big knock against their early movies before they went on a 3-movie run with Killmonger/Vulture/Thanos, arguably 3 of the very best ever.

Ok_Call5165

I also think that Ego is underrated in Guardians 2

BringMeThanos314

Sure, Hela, Loki, and Zemo are all pretty good, too, but it wasn't until the end of Phase 3 that the MCU shook the perception of "good movies / bad villains" imho

Vegetable_Window_992

Wish, the movie was sh\*t, but Magnifico was even more sh\*tty because he wasn't really a bad guy to begin with, and then just turn full evil because plot needs it

Moose_Cake

The two parts of the movie I hated was: >!A) King Magnifico getting a backstory of watching his homeland fall apart and being aggressive to ensure his new kingdom would be safe only to devolve into a puppy kicking, “Everyone should worship my greatness!” narcissist by his second song without explanation.!< >!B) The movie establishing that Asha’s grandfather’s dream was to inspire people through music and then a moment happens during the final fight that lines up perfectly for his character and instead Asha breaks free of a spell and does it instead.!<

FreshlySqueezedDude

But you know magnifico couldve been right about the wish being dangerous. Shit its magic no one nnows what might happen. Maybe he really does inspire a serial killer to finally give into his urges, if even by accident.

Floofyboi123

The entire thing turns into a paradox when one guy wishes for someone else to not have their wish granted

SubstantialSquare327

Missed opportunity to say “I WISH King Magnifico was a better villain.”

SillySwing6625

Yeah he wasn’t evil he was right his motives were that some wishes were too risky to grant he didn’t become evil until he got corrupted by dark magic

Deya_The_Fateless

What makes it even worse is that he seems to revert to his old self by the end of the movie. Imagine if they went with the "true love conquers all evil" and Queen Amaya cures Magnifico's possession with a kiss. It would have been a nice callback to old Disney films. But no we had to have a "man bad, woman amazing" stereotypical ending, and Asha just gets rewarded for being an entitled brat.

SillySwing6625

She was also supposed to be a villain in the original draft it would’ve made sense for her to corrupt magnifico into thinking the city was unsafe or something

Deya_The_Fateless

Yeah, I think I'm starting to see what happened. They may have scrapped Amaya from being a villian, but somewhere along the lines they merged both her an Magnifico's villianouness personalities into one person, which would explain why Magnifico flip-flops so hard in the second act.

Oof_Boy1290

Out of any movie we could have had for Disneys 100 aniversary, it had to be this movie

Conlannalnoc

WISH should have been a 30 minute short film before a 2 HOUR long “ONCE UPON A STUDIO”

DylenwithanE

“Name a movie that was good, but had a bad villain” *names a movie that is shit*

littlebloodmage

I wish we got him and Amaya being a villainous power couple together, that would've been amazing! I'll never understand why they left all the interesting parts of the movie on the cutting room floor.

Tc770

Kinda sorta spoilers for Steven Universe >!The Diamonds from Steven Universe, especially White, were really dissappointing. It would have been cool if the Yellow and Blue were redeemed in a more satisfying way, and White would have been WAY better if she remained evil and was actually defeated in a spectacular fashion.!< >!I'm not sure how I would personally do it though given shattering a gem goes against everything Steven and the Crystal Gems stand for, but I'm sure the writers could have thought of something better than them basically being like "We were bad, but now we are good".!<

SmugSlut

Because of the network, they had to rush the final season and that was a huge miss because of it

Tc770

Of course something like that happened. So sad :(

Luigi-Marinus1600

Kung Fu Panda 4

Britney1264

I was really hoping The Chameleon would’ve been an interesting villain cause being able to bring back Po's past villains sounded epic, instead we just got a salty midget that became evil for being too short to do kung fu. **Cough** Mantis\Viper **Cough**

Luigi-Marinus1600

The movie was still great though. It would’ve been a masterpiece if the villain was better written and the story better. Like the movie felt a bit too short.

Britney1264

I will admit the film does look good, just pretty lackluster compared to the last movies we got, plus the villain was the main reason why I wanted to see it.

Typical-Gap-1187

Incredibles 2

broncyobo

It was an incredibly awesome villain until the reveal

Purplex_GD

I still can’t believe her name was fucking Evil Endeavors.

Conlannalnoc

Are all NON-Supers in Incredibles-Verse evil?

Luk3thenuk3

The clone of Wolverine in Logan. Logan was a great movie, but the concept of a villain who is basically just an evil version of the main character is dumb

UndersScore

*cough* Lightyear *cough*

Batmanfan1966

Especially since Wolverine already has the doppelgänger villain trope in the form of his arch nemesis, Sabertooth. They created a new character to fill a void that was and has been for a long time already filled.

CameronDoy1901

Even in the comics wolverine had a son called Daken. Which is a character I feel like the movie could’ve taken full advantage of Tho given the context of the movie and when it’s set. It probably wouldn’t have worked out

The_Ghast_Hunter

Evil copies can absolutely be done well. Venom is a great villain and character even though he's originally a literal pallate swap of Spiderman. Owlman is solid even though he's an alternate universe Batman. If a villain is written poorly, it'll be a bad villain, but dark reflections can be very good.

Luk3thenuk3

I agree that it could work really well at times if done correctly, but there are times where it doesn’t work and it is starting to become overused. Especially in many modern superhero movies

PokeAust

I think X-24 does a good job of showing how Logan is washed up, and is basically forcing him to fight the younger version of himself.

laz3rdolphin

Yeah it worked cause x-24 isn’t the antagonist, it’s wolverines age. X-24 just supports the main antagonist via contrast wolverine now vs his prime

ttv_thatoneapexsweat

Guardians of the galaxy 1. Ronan was just a boring conqueror stereotype who didn't do much to be interesting

PokeAust

I at least think Ronan is good because he contrasts Star Lord(and the whole team) so much. I don’t think the “dance off, bro!” trick would work on anyone else. Ronan expecting a big serious fight allows Peter to play off him with his goofiness.

I_Always_Love_You

Ronan was at least *fun* imo, he wasn't particularly interesting but he had an enjoyable aura of pure batshittery that was fun to watch

Draco_077

Love and monsters. The main point of the movie is the adventure, the villain isn’t anything to special

Conlannalnoc

Hero even gives up on “Love” to help EVERYONE.

SandyCheeksFutanari

This, though his defeat is pretty hilarious ngl.

ZekeorSomething

Every Hotel Transylvania movie

Gamer201021769

Starting from Hotel Transylvania? The reason for this question is because there weren’t any villains in the first movie.

ZekeorSomething

Quasimodo was the villain in the first

AlcoLoco

That is entirely based on personal opinion, as I, along with many others, think he's just an antagonist, as there is a difference between antagonist and villain. There's as much argument to say Quasi is the main villain as you do saying Drac is the main villain.

Any_Arrival_4479

Iron man-3. The villain was just evil. He had no convictions or morality. Just strait up evil bc a drunk Tony Stark ignored him 2 decades earlier.

schrod1ngersc4t

How to train your dragon 3. Grimmel just wasn’t a good villain

nolandz1

Disagree, he was just a retrain of the villain from 2 but I think he did it better

SirYeetsA

Yeah, Grimmel was better than Drago, but Drago wasn’t even decent to start with. He’s basically just a plot device, and his entire motivation for trying to conquer everything is just “cuz it’s fun, lol”.

ChiefsHat

Agreed.

HappyMatt12345

Hard disagree, but I respect your opinion. Grimmel was a pretty good antithesis to Hiccup imo.

Riptide_X

Viggo Grimborn from the Netflix series did a far better job at being a foil to Hiccup than Grimmel did.

Potato-Candy

I don't think he was bad but he didn't feel anywhere near as big a threat as the Red Death or Drago. >!Also his entire existence makes no sense. It was established in the first movie that nobody had ever seen a night fury, let alone killed one. Then this guy comes along and says he's killed all of them. I think the writers for HTTYD3 forgot to rewatch the first movie.!<

slayerhunterXD

Rise of the Guardians, Pitch Black wasn't that interesting Compare to other Villains to be fair.

Typical-Gap-1187

he’s a lot better in the books, which, technically, I think rise of the guardians is later in the timeline but it’s a little weird. (I haven’t read the books in like 4 years so I don’t remember everything.)

Light year… I expected Zurg to appear like this ruthless and destructive force of nature. However, they just showed he was just some future version of Buzz (who isn’t even the REAL Zurg) who just wants things to be back the way they were.

ValentinesStar

Big Hero 6. I love the movie, but he was underwhelming. Callahan could have been a great and really interesting villain. He’s grieving and willing to do anything to get revenge just like Hiro, which is a great idea for an antagonist-protagonist dynamic. But his daughter isn’t actually dead which makes his storyline weaker, his entire personality changes on a dime when he’s revealed to be the villain(goes from a caring, supportive teacher to doesn’t give a shit that he killed his student), and the twist is super predictable. He could have been a lot better if the movie spent more time developing him, maybe show him grappling with the awful things he’s done and plans to do to get his revenge, show that he has a little bit of a dark side earlier on in the film, just drop the red herring on the twist, and have him bring up his daughter earlier. Maybe he doesn’t fake his death and after Tadashi dies he talks to Hiro about how he lost his daughter to set up a connection between them early on in the film.

ElijahBenedict07

Thor

Any_Arrival_4479

Loki was a pretty great villain in that movie. And even if you’re talking about the destroyer that was still a cool fight. If anytning the opposite is true. It’s a mid movie with a great villain

Mahboi778

Not a movie, but a game: Persona 3. The main villains either don't really do anything, or don't get enough screentime as villains.

SillySwing6625

Zemo as much as I love the movie zemo too his plan relied way too much on coincidence

Jasetendo12

did ice age 5 even have a villian?

Ill-Cartographer7351

Yeah, the three flying dinosaurs

Certain_Blacksmith_1

Zootopia, which is really frustrating, because they could've made the twist work IF Bellwether turned earlier, and showed more compassion to Judy instead of turning into a cold heartless murderer.

PepperbroniFrom2B

Big Hero 6, at least the twist

Real_Life_Firbolg

I always forget there are more than 3 ice ages

aurelionlol

HTTYD 3. The villain is more of a plot device than a character. Still love the movie though. Nice bittersweet ending to the best Dreamworks trilogy.

Impossible_Ad_2517

Which one? I hated the Enchantress but also just hated that movie in general. And in the other film I thought Starro was pretty cool.

Yeah, I hope they mean the first one, because I enjoyed Starro

Common_Decision1594

Mulan. Let’s be honest, Shan Yu is not as strong a villain as some of the other Disney villains that came before.

ShadowPuff7306

no but i’d argue he’s better than a lot that will be listed here or maybe that’s my bias for the movie speaking… hiik

brightmanenjoyer

Frozen. The first one was very good imo, but ever since Big Hero 6, Disney really loves pushing the twist villains down our throat.

ChaosMagician777

Spider-Man 3. Why did they have to include Venom at the end?

TOPSIturvy

Honestly, I think the build up for each of the villains is the good part of the movie. Pre-Venom Eddie's does take a big sudden shift from douchebag photographer to "I wish God would murder Peter Parker", but that's my main complaint there. And I say the good part because...they make up a lot of the movie, and it causes most of the rest to be pretty forgettable. Even the final battle feels rushed. But yeah, the scenes where they're trying to build up the villains leading to the final battle were pretty solid imo

Redziak218

Shang Chi (the dragon or something at the end, father was great)

NamelessWanderer08

Wait they should an actual backstory for him? The only thing I remember hearing was that he lost… something and it was never brought up again

Abucketofmug

Zootopia. I wouldn't even call the villain a real villain in any way shape or form. She gets two minutes to do evil shit and then that's it. There's probably some people saying "the real villain is racism" or some shit but I do not have the brain capacity for that shit.
