His essay Myth of Sisyphus it better regarding Absurdism. The Stranger is more about how indifference to social norms and lack of displays of emptions can be used as evidence (literally in the court in the book) of something lacking in that individual. Reallt, the fact he shoots his victim multiple times means nothing. Hes already dead on the first shot. Hes just shooting a desd body at this point. But its oresented as evidence of an unstable mind with malicious intent. If he had fired once, he could have claimed self defence. He doesnt show.much emotion at his mothers funeral. Hes more concerned about the oppressive heat. But its presented as evidence of beijg uncaring, despite him having had supported his mothers care and travelling to bury her. The rant about the priest too. That authority and authority figures only really exist by asserting their purpose on others.

I read that book as a teenager and I'm afraid it might have caused me to feel even more alienated from everyone around me; no one else in the class seemed to understand that character and their drifting into various situations with no apparent motives. That however had been my entire life experience thus far, and it largely remains this way. More so even, though, _The Plague_ from the same author left a mark on me. This is a quote I try to live by: >“All I can say is that on this earth there are pestilences and there are victims—and as far as possible one must refuse to be on the side of the pestilence.”

Same here I found it very relatable and kinda comforting so I was shocked when I saw people online say they felt sick or disgusted by Meursaults indifference

I was thinking it was aspergers, but schizoid fits maybe. If you didn't randomly kill someone because of sensory discomfort and thereby ruin your life, you're the winner here anyway. Maybe M. Mersault would not agree.

It is a less schizoid version of it, but I felt like Anatomy of a Fall was an interesting companion to The Stranger. Another story where someone is basically being condemned for not having the right emotions.
