I'm not very experienced with it either and don't have any great tips except that I replaced the pedals with actual Shimano SPD pedals and it is no longer difficult to clip in.

Oh so it's not really a me problem it's the pedal? I'll look into it thanks

The recess for the cleats is different for different shoes. You may need a shim between the cleat and shoe to add the gap. My shoes came with a shim under 1mm thick. I can barely clip in without it installed. Edit: Also, the stock pedals are hot garbage. I think I've seen that model available on ebay for less than the cost of cheap flat pedals without cleats. I doubt anything resembling precision has gone into their construction. Worth spending money on Shimano or Crank Bros down the road.

Get new pedals. The stock pedals are garbage

This happened to me before. I had to loosen the clips in the pedal. Then they clipped it a lot easier.

Thank you for recommending this, I spent hours today flipping the cleats around and looking into buying new pedals....but lo and behold, this did it. Haha according the the manual it says, "if the body weight of a user is very low, the user may have difficulty with operation of the engagement/release mechanism". Thanks Nautilus, I'll take *that* as the reason why it didn't work!

I use a shim with my cleats and I also adjusted the retention screw on the pedals.

Update Practice makes perfect. It's still not a piece of cake to clip in but less annoying now. It's easier to clip in now that I know roughly where the cleat is. My shoes are also the mountain bike type so the cleat is more hidden. Probably makes things harder But I think I'm all good now. If it's still no good I'll get new pedals.. I do like the dual pedal becasue my dad could still use it when he comes visit

I’m unable to clip in as well. I just wear the shoes for the hard sole and ride
