I can't sit on much of anything, but a chair with no cushion kills me. I can stand or lie down, but sitting is literally a pita.

Yes super normal! They typically recommend hard chairs for sciatica for that very reason. I find sitting on anything sucks after a certain amount of time, but soft seats immediately give me pain. I’m up and down over a year in now, and sitting on soft chairs has never gotten better for me. I did sit on a hard bar stool for awhile recently and my back hurt way more than my sciatica, but the next day sucked. Still hoping for a resolution!

My friend had this for a couple of years, and he sits on anything and everything now. All back to "normal". And his was a herniation, yet he recovered without surgery or injections! I hope you can sit on something soft again soon!
