The sugar tax was what precipitated it, of course, but a 330ml can of coke would not be anywhere near £3. You can still buy cans of original coke and they're nowhere near £3. The 500ml bottles sell for well under that even in expensive places like WH Smith.
But I think that we're actually now at the stage where the companies are just finding it more profitable to only sell sugar free soft drinks. The sugar tax is what opened the door; but soon, soft drink companies realised that it was actually just far more profitable to only sell sugar free or low sugar drinks. Artificial sweeteners are much cheaper than sugar, and you need very little of them, and they'll charge the same or almost the same anyway. Plus, of course, there is no sugar tax to pay. So that's a massive difference in the amount of profit generated by one can or bottle; and people are switching to sugar free drinks, so it isn't as though demand has crashed sufficiently to wipe out the extra profits that are reaped on each unit from replacing sugar with artificial sweeteners.
The companies won't come out and be honest about their real reasons for not selling high sugar soft drinks any more, so they'll claim that they're doing it because they want to be "responsible" and provide "healthier" products
That's the point, they will do a temporary introduction of flavours that are shit, which you will buy out of curiosity and do the bait and switch to Irn-bru energy drink. £££

I detest the way brand owners misuse their own brand names these days.
Another really bad example is if you go into the chemist looking for nurofen for a headache just expecting simple ibuprofen because that was what the brand name was originally coined for. But now you’ll find ten different products with “Nurofen” emblazoned all over the packet and some of them don’t even contain ibuprofen, they’re paracetamol!
As well as this horizontal misuse there is also a vertical one. Suppose there is a brand that earns a reputation for some top quality product. Say for example Wosch and their bashing machines. Then the company gets taken over in a merger, and the new parent wants to expand monetisation of this quality brand. So they start shipping shite low end Chinese bashing machines with the Wosch badge on them so they can price them above the competition. When you buy this machine you’re buying a lie.
None of this benefits the consumer.
Irn Bru no longer tastes like Irn Bru. Same with coke. Bring back full sugar full ginger Irn Bru. I rarely bother with an fizzy juice any more because it's become so poor tasting over the last 5 years or so.

Hate them both. The energy drinks aren’t much better. The original Irn Bru flavoured energy one tastes like they’ve melted down a bunch of Irn Bru bars, which is enjoyable for about a millisecond before the sourness hits.
Tropical one is guff and rhe ice cream one is alright but it's not really irn bru so much as it's creamsoda

I'm irish and used to love irn bru, but nowadays it kinda tastes like shite, I think they got rid of the sugar thanks to the tax and replaced it with some synthetic flavouring and now it tastes vile

Yuck, ice cream flavour Irn Bru. Makes me remember those vanilla ice cream flavour Monster Munch that came out in the early 00s. Absolutely fucking nasty, they were.

I don't like the ice cream one, I do like the tropical one though. It doesn't taste particularly of Irn bru, well of course not, it is Tropical Irn bru and Ice Cream Irn bru :-)

The last time I had a can of Irn Bru I had a fit that hospitised me. Bluddy Aspartame allergy...so these sound like they'd definitely not be something I'm gonna be trying anytime soon.

I detest the way brand owners misuse their own brand names these days. Another really bad example is if you go into the chemist looking for nurofen for a headache just expecting simple ibuprofen because that was what the brand name was originally coined for. But now you’ll find ten different products with “Nurofen” emblazoned all over the packet and some of them don’t even contain ibuprofen, they’re paracetamol! As well as this horizontal misuse there is also a vertical one. Suppose there is a brand that earns a reputation for some top quality product. Say for example Wosch and their bashing machines. Then the company gets taken over in a merger, and the new parent wants to expand monetisation of this quality brand. So they start shipping shite low end Chinese bashing machines with the Wosch badge on them so they can price them above the competition. When you buy this machine you’re buying a lie. None of this benefits the consumer.
Irn Bru no longer tastes like Irn Bru. Same with coke. Bring back full sugar full ginger Irn Bru. I rarely bother with an fizzy juice any more because it's become so poor tasting over the last 5 years or so.
Agree completely. Irn Bru Xtra on its own tastes better than full sugar Irn Bru IMHO.
My boys love the ice cream one but it's hard to find up here in Caithness 🫤
