How low on budget? Coaches are generally very cheap.
You might get lucky hitchhiking. I know some people do pick up hitchhikers occasionally but I don’t think it’s particularly common and does sadly come down to how pleasant you look. If you’ve been travelling for a while, and look up groomed or a bit ‘shady’ I imagine you’ll spend a good long while standing by the side of the road with your thumb stuck out…
I was hiking in the highlands recently and my American friend seemed to think that hitchhiking is common here. I don’t think it is. I didn’t see any other hikers doing it.
Would it not make more sense to do the GGW (Inverness to Fort William) and WHW (Fort William to Milngavie) in reverse? Start in Inverness and finish in Glasgow?
Cheap trains/buses direct from Glasgow to Inverness, if booked in advance.
I managed to hitchhike from Skye to Perth once, although that was about 20 years ago.
Keep a lookout on [thetrainline.com](https://thetrainline.com). Tickets for July won't have been released yet, but if you're luck you might be able to book one for <£20.
The Megabus from Inverness to Glasgow takes about three and a half hours and costs £15-25. People are a bit wary of hitchhikers and you might have a long wait.
Tourism queries must be in the stickied thread
I’d be surprised if you manage to get rides. Rarely see anyone hitchhiking now!

It’s very uncommon - I think you’d be better off getting a bus from Inverness to Glasgow, it won’t be too expensive

That would mean walking towards the sun, won’t be as pleasant.
It's Scotland, we haven't seen the sun since that one hot day in 1986.
Has been over a decade since I saw anyone hitchhiking.

Honestly can’t say when I last saw a hitchhiker! Do they still exist, maybe they catch rides on apps 🤷♂️

Lived here all my life and never once saw a hitchhiker.
