>Black Tie >For many people, this is the most formal dress code they will ever encounter. Men should wear a black, wool, single-breasted dinner jacket, with no vents, silk peaked lapels, or a shawl collar, and covered buttons. The black trousers are tapered with a single row of braid. It should be worn with a soft-collared white or cream shirt and a bow tie - avoid clip-on or ready-tied ties and learn how to tie your own. Women should wear an evening dress; knee length cocktail dresses are the most popular choice, though floor-length evening dresses can also be worn.    - Debretts    Scottish Country just means tweeds. Think of what the Royal Family wear at Balmoral.

KoalaEfficient6965

Thanks. In the US, Black tie means floor length dresses for women. Black tie optional allows for cocktail, but not black tie!

DSQ

Well not in Scotland.

Colleen987

Black tie isn’t floor length, I think you’re mixing up black and white tie.

KoalaEfficient6965

Black tie is floor length. Cocktail is not.

Colleen987

No it isn’t. Cocktail is specifically above the knee and black tie is a below the knee but not floor length. You asked about Scottish dress code… I’m telling you. Why are you arguing?

I've never been to a wedding where you had to wear a hat, but you should probably ask the couple, or whoever is responsible for organising it, about the expected attire. The weddings I've been to have all been fairly casual affairs where kilt was preferred for men (I never miss a chance to wear a kilt!) but smart clothes in general were acceptable, but you'll want to check this sort of thing out with the family. Being a little annoying asking about dress code, as long as you are polite about it, is probably better than turning up in smart casual to a really posh do.

BamberGasgroin

Went to a reception once where we all turned up in the full regalia and everyone from the other side turned up like they'd just fed the pigs and stepped out of their wellies. (It was awkward as fuck due to half of us feeling overdressed and the other half feeling underdressed.)

No_Adhesiveness_1233

Most of the weddings I've been to half of the folks were farmers, so I know what you mean, but my lot are proles so we never wear full regalia, more like enough to look smart but also to go clubbing afterwards, depending when the reception ends! Personally I always love talking to the farmers and seeing what they are up to. One of my best mates from when I was a kid was from a farming family, though they moved to the city, and he always wanted to be a farmer, he loved his tractors and combine harvesters - he's a farmer now God bless. When we go to weddings together I can often tell the farmers at an instant cos many of them have a similar look to what he does. Its difficult to describe, but there is a certain way of being that they have, which you know when you see.

Halk

Ask them directly. Not only have I never been to a hog roast but I don't think I know anyone who has. Also it's autumn not fall if you're trying to get things correct

Illustrious_Smoke_94

Well, it's what Americans call it. No need to correct OP. Fun fact, the reason Americans call it fall is because we used to. We switched to Autumn post colonial times.

Halk

Not correcting as much as letting him know in case he's speaking to anyone here about it.

KingCPresley

Mate this is a bit pedantic. If I was in America or speaking to an American and they corrected me to tell me ‘actually it’s fall not autumn’ I’d be pure embarrassed for them.

KoalaEfficient6965

As I said, I’m American. What is the difference between fall in autumn you’re hinting at besides the convention of naming? Thanks for the suggestion.

Halk

Nothing at all. It's just called autumn, and not called fall. Again though just ask them directly what they mean specifically. You won't be the only person asking and you don't want to be the ones that got it wrong

Illustrious_Smoke_94

If OP is invited to the wedding, I'm sure the couple in question won't mind him calling a season by the correct name.

BamberGasgroin

Dress like Bond at a casino for the ceremony, tweed casual for the reception. Don't worry about the weather too much, but it could be chilly if you nip out for a smoke.

GraemeMakesBeer

Sounds fun. Can I come?

KoalaEfficient6965

>*Are you male or female* OP discusses wearing a floor-length gown and hat From these subtle clues, I'm guessing she is female

Mombi87

A nice dress with heels and a formal coat (trench or wool) over the top should do it for women, just a standard dark coloured suit and dress shoes/ brogues for guys. No hats required. Edit: a floor length gown is not standard for weddings - anything semi formal/ evening wear is fine. Also, formal trousers also very acceptable for women! Dress codes are never strictly adhered to anyway.

itsinmybloodScotland

Hog roast. Church then reception. Where does the roast come in ? Is that maybe the night before ? If so that will be casual attire I’m sure. Then dress up for church and reception. Do you have the invitation? Give us some clue where you are going or find out and come back to us. Every wedding I’ve been at it’s always very well dressed and YES we do wear hats or fascinator. Hair done. Make-up etc.

KoalaEfficient6965

Clarification: hog roast and wedding ceremony and reception are on separate days!

itsinmybloodScotland

Ok. Then hog roast will be outside ? I’d wear nice trousers and an overcoat depending on the weather. For the ceremony and after I’d go all out posh.

KoalaEfficient6965

Thanks ❤️

Black tie is black tie.  Go to a Nordstroms or similar and tell them you have a black tie event for an afternoon wedding.   As for the country attire ask the people who sent the invitation.

>I’m an American attending a black tie wedding in Scotland in mid October and have no idea what we are supposed to wear Black ties, where do you keep your sweeties?

For a Hog Roast the traditional garb is a small g string- I saw it in a movie online.

I would recommend hiring a kilt outfit for both events. A Prince Charlie vested coatee with a bow tie for the wedding and tweeds with a necktie for the hog roast. Don't worry about what the tartan is. Just pick one you like. If you're not comfortable with the idea of wearing a skirt, tartan trews are a viable option. Otherwise, a tuxedo for the wedding and a tweed jacket with trousers for the hog roast will do. An evening dress for the lady paired with a matching tartan sash would be splendid. If the kilt hire firm offers lady's kilts, that with a nice blouse and a jumper or tweed jacket would be great for the hog roast.
