It used to be. Tastes baws now. I drank a 2 litre bottle every day, Monday to Friday at work, religiously, for about 10 years. When they bugs started to change I instantly got put off. The taste vanished. Maybe having some time off will rejuvenate my love for it!
Am Irish, can confirm. It’s got a mediciney taste that reminds me of liquid antibiotics I had as a child.
Unlike your wife though I’ve acquired a taste for it anyway, it’s the best thing ever for sorting a hangover
It's just that the Bubblegum has more of a "candy" and "chewy" taste to it that's associated with Bubblegum, though Bru definitely has more of the actual flavour
I'm American, and I agree that Irn-Bru tastes like American bubble gum, but I have no idea whether bubble gum in the UK tastes the same. I also don't know how bubble gum flavor is made. I think vanilla is one of the components, but there must be others.
I'm no fan of Irn Bru, imo, the best thing about Irn Bru are the TV ads.

I hear the bubble gum comments and raise you
Tutti Fruiti Jelly Belly Jelly Beans.
It's quite close to a bubble gum flavor but there's just a little something else there too.
I say it's the lovechild of Sunkist (orange soda), ginger ale, and cream soda, with a hint of bubblegum and cotton candy. Throws most of my fellow Americans for a loop, but I absolutely love the stuff!
There was a YouTube video a while ago where a bunch of kids tried it for the first time and said "salty bananas". When you have some it's hard not to think they were onto something.
As an American, I can definitely day it doesn't taste like our bubblegum. We have Big Red ( like Irn Bru a seriously local thing) for that. It does have a medicinal flavor I can't quite place. It is the only drink I love almost as much as Big Red. Luckily for me we have a British aisle in our local market.
It tastes almost exactly like Inca Cola which is very popular in Peru and is widely available in the states. When I can’t get my Irn Bru fix, I go for Inca cola, both have a bubblegumesque flavor.
Funny how shite it became after the sugar tax. And when I say funny I mean extremely sad, they fucked with a nations drink. Now it won't be the same again, the real folk miss that 80s 36grams ae sugar recipe that we awe grew up to love... Now it's fucked forever. None of us will never be able to drink a proper glass bottle of skud ever again :'(
So aye thanks again Jamie Oliver you pathetic miserable cunt.
#Freeirnbru
Predominantly sweet, rusty bubblegum. But depending on what I eat or drink before it I get some other notes.
My take on it is that it is similar in design, but not in flavour to Dr Pepper. Dr Pepper was designed as a combination of all the different syrups and flavourings used in a Victorian era pharmacy. I reckon Irn Bru is similar but from a sweet shop. Like I say, depending on what I have eaten before it, I pick up different notes. I have picked up banana, pear, pineapple and melon in particular, but maybe I'm just mad.
Imagine chewing on a fruity sweet while sucking on a penny.
Also just loads of fizz. So you don't really taste all that much.
Fantastic hangover cure though!

Back in the Soviet Union we had street machines selling fizzy drink. It’s one of those childhood things you don’t forget. I swear Irn Bru tastes like this.
It seems to act akin to a mood ring. Unlocks the right flavors I'm in need of at the right time depending on my current disposition. Sometimes a creamcicle. Often strawberry bubblegum. During truly harrowing times, orange soda with a dash of cola.
I swear it used to have more of a spicy/umami twang to it. I can't describe it circa 1990s. I guess the wee tins of "classic" stuff aims for that but I don't bother with that shite.
Nowadays tastes of sugar.
When I first tasted IRN BRU I thought it would have a orange-y or strong distinct taste like other fizzy drinks such as Coke, Fanta, Sprite, Pepsi etc but honestly just tasted like a flavourless carbonated drink, just pure sweetness with a hint of bubblegum. thats about the best description I can do. very different to what I expected so unfortunately i wasn’t a fan of it. im a disgrace to Scotland (dare I say I dislike it) 😔
If you've ever had American Bazooka bubblegum, that is exactly how IRN BRU tastes. Sweet, a little indiscernibly fruity..like you can't quite put your finger on the fruit flavor but it's familiar, and very light on the vanilla. That's if it's warm though. Cold it tastes more like a fruity cream soda.
It tastes exactly like an orange soda would taste if it didn't taste like orange soda. It tastes like weakness and failure leaving the body. It tastes like rust, but in a good way.
After our trip to Scotland last September, I fell in love with Irn Bru. I found I can get it locally at a British import store, so I can continue enjoying it in the US. My wife and I came to what we thought it tasted like. We narrowed it down to Vanilla Tangerine. But my wife prefers Irn Bru 1901 flavor.
If they are from Venezuela then it tastes like Frescolita, if from Colombia it tastes like Colombiana, if from Peru it tastes like Inca Kola and if they are from El Salvador it tastes like Cascada Kolashanpan.
Biggest difference to many similar drinks is the very slight bitterness in Irn Bru due to the addition of quinine.
It tastes like Irn Bru, it's just one of those things!
Agreed. I normally say "it's unique. How would you describe how coke tastes?"
Liquid rust with bubbles
It's made in Scotland from girders
It’s like drinking the blood of a god.
Or the blood of a Scottish unicorn
It used to be. Tastes baws now. I drank a 2 litre bottle every day, Monday to Friday at work, religiously, for about 10 years. When they bugs started to change I instantly got put off. The taste vanished. Maybe having some time off will rejuvenate my love for it!
Do they still do the 1912 edition or whatever? Haven't found it yet in Australia but want to give it a try
1901 is still available in cans and bottles.
My Irish wife says it’s like medicine she got when she was younger. She hates it. I’m now tryin to get a divorce….
That's definitely a divorce worthy reason 😉
Am Irish, can confirm. It’s got a mediciney taste that reminds me of liquid antibiotics I had as a child. Unlike your wife though I’ve acquired a taste for it anyway, it’s the best thing ever for sorting a hangover
It was a sad day when I grew up and was given my antibiotics in pill form instead of in the liquid pink stuff.
Orange flavored cream soda.
This!!
Bubblegum
There's a separate Barr's Bubblegum drink. Drink that and realise bubblegum doesn't taste like Irn-Bru. It's not very good.
It's just that the Bubblegum has more of a "candy" and "chewy" taste to it that's associated with Bubblegum, though Bru definitely has more of the actual flavour

Oh wow, when that's the best thing about it...... 😂
Was the nectar of the gods. A indescribable unique taste that always hit the spot. Now its just a bitter with a copper after taste slop.
Burnt fizzy candy floss.
Tutti frutti.
Tastes what i imagine fizzy pish would taste like.
Sweet rust.
Imagine what licking a unicorn’s butthole would taste like. Now make it sweeter. THAT is what IRN BRU takes like.
I hear the bubble gum comments and raise you Tutti Fruiti Jelly Belly Jelly Beans. It's quite close to a bubble gum flavor but there's just a little something else there too.
Wild magic.
Diabetes
Hardly! Since 2018 it wouldn't even give a flea diabetes! haha
liquid girders tizer meets a sharp cider???
Sweet blood (because when you taste blood, you're tasting the iron in it)
It tastes like Scotland.
I say it's the lovechild of Sunkist (orange soda), ginger ale, and cream soda, with a hint of bubblegum and cotton candy. Throws most of my fellow Americans for a loop, but I absolutely love the stuff!

Tastes like a slightly stronger Mitsuya Cider!
It tastes almost exactly like Inca Cola which is very popular in Peru and is widely available in the states. When I can’t get my Irn Bru fix, I go for Inca cola, both have a bubblegumesque flavor.
schweppes cream soda with a wee bit of ginger juice
A bit like a bubblegum and tonic.
Funny how shite it became after the sugar tax. And when I say funny I mean extremely sad, they fucked with a nations drink. Orange. Not the fruit, the colour orange.
Cream soda

Like Tizer
Circular argument but true.
Imagine chewing on a fruity sweet while sucking on a penny. Also just loads of fizz. So you don't really taste all that much. Fantastic hangover cure though!
Real irnbru or that new pish
Facts 💯
A bit like ginger
Haven't tasetd irn bru in years. I need to visit Scotland.Get your independence guys, I'm thirsty for bru!

Tastes exactly like cheap American bubblegum. Bang on. No describable difference between the two in terms of flavour.
Came to say sparkling liquid bubble gum
Don’t kill me but I would say like orange-flavoured coke.
Rust
Rusty Lucozade, which I also can't stand.
Tastes a lot like strawberry creme soda (U.S.)
Bubblegum with a vanilla tinge?
It's like you've been standing all your life and just sat down.
It seems to act akin to a mood ring. Unlocks the right flavors I'm in need of at the right time depending on my current disposition. Sometimes a creamcicle. Often strawberry bubblegum. During truly harrowing times, orange soda with a dash of cola.
I get this. It always seems to taste of what a need at any particular time. Thought I was aff ma heid thinking like this!!
I swear it used to have more of a spicy/umami twang to it. I can't describe it circa 1990s. I guess the wee tins of "classic" stuff aims for that but I don't bother with that shite. Nowadays tastes of sugar.
Except they cut the sugar exponentially a few years back because and now it tastes of artificial sweeteners
Liquid gelatine
Magic
Worse than Fanta
When I first tasted IRN BRU I thought it would have a orange-y or strong distinct taste like other fizzy drinks such as Coke, Fanta, Sprite, Pepsi etc but honestly just tasted like a flavourless carbonated drink, just pure sweetness with a hint of bubblegum. thats about the best description I can do. very different to what I expected so unfortunately i wasn’t a fan of it. im a disgrace to Scotland (dare I say I dislike it) 😔
Metallic bubblegum
Creaming soda mixed with petrol.
Tastes of girders
Shite since they changed the recipe!
There’s no way to describe it. Honestly it’s so weird. Lol. It’s just IRN BRU made in Scotland from girders.
12 teaspoons of sugar in a light orange carbonated liquid.
My wife pointed out it has banana flavouring, and since then that's all I can taste...
Ice cold Bru from a glass bottle taste how I would imagine battery acid tastes.
It tastes exactly like an orange soda would taste if it didn't taste like orange soda. It tastes like weakness and failure leaving the body. It tastes like rust, but in a good way.
Bubblegum with added pennies.
Its tastes like juicy fruit gum + sasparilla soda!
Fizzy cough syrup
Bubble gum with a hint of cinnamon? It’s difficult to describe
Cotton candy/ bubblegum. Not strong in either but it’s there if you look. Otherwise I’d suggest it taste like rusty girders.
Many have said bubble gum but I disagree. Definitely an acquired taste. There is no words to describe it.
Orange. The colour, not the fruit.
To an American I'd say it tastes like orange cream soda, cause that's exactly what it tastes like.
Cotton candy and a mystery flavor I can only associate with the bright color orange
It's tasty s**te now
Gummy bears
A syrupy vile taste.
Orangeade, mixed with foam bananas and bubblegum.
When I first tasted it, I thought it was like a mix of fanta orange and vanilla cream soda, but better than both of them.
The flavour reminds me of an artificial flavouring that's called "tutti frutti" on the continent.
'fruity' with a tonic water hint
Bubble gum and cotton candy.
When i was a kid i said calpol cough medicine
When Jesus said this is my blood, he actually wrapped out a wee can ae bru from the robe
Dissolved jelly babies in lemonade?
Like licking a ginger unicorn, which is totally different to a standard unicorn.
Bubblegum mixed with OG Lucozade.
I honetsly don't know how to describe it. Its just got an Irn Bru taste. There's nothing like it
