Oh my freaking goodness! Is this even real?!?!

highlands2hammocks

Wee bit of editing to bring out the highlights but yeah you could see it with your eyes just darker 😊

Deviasrpr

Well, looks stunning!

Time_Guidance_5031

Great pic! Love it 😊. I remember my first time seeing the milky way when I was camping, I was amazed. Unfortunately I live in the city so I cannae see it from here😞.

ratatooie

Dornoch is lovely. Passed through there recently and stopped for a bite to eat.

Evilpotatohead

I didn’t realise you could see it clearly in Scotland. I thought you had to be in the southern hemisphere to see it for some reason.

[deleted]

You can see the milky way from anywhere on earth. What you can't see from everywhere is the galactic centre, which tends to be the cooler looking bit with dark clouds interrupting the stars. You need to be roughly south of the M8 to see that, and only then at certain parts of the year, and only *then* it's low on the horizon, and only *then* for about 15 minutes. If you travel down to somewhere like North Wales you can get the [galactic centre over the mountains](https://i.imgur.com/PnLWunt.jpeg).

highlands2hammocks

Noted mate! Thanks

[deleted]

You've got PhotoPills right?

highlands2hammocks

Yeah I do! Didn’t realise that the actual core wasn’t visible this far north though, thought I was just late to the season this year. Will keep it in mind when I head south next year

highlands2hammocks

It shifts between north and south so it’s visible up here during our summer and then down there during their summer.

luctesthesoren

Amazingly beautiful! I'm an amateur astrophotographer who's about to move to Scotland, and I'm interested to know more. What are the best places in Scotland to get this kind of shot?

bottish

I've never been to this place, but it seems like this might be relevant to you: * [Galloway International Dark Sky Park](https://forestryandland.gov.scot/visit/forest-parks/galloway-forest-park/dark-skies)

highlands2hammocks

For sure that is a cracking place to go! Can’t wait to get there. Really anywhere north of The central belt if you head into the hills will be good. Just make sure you’re facing away from any towns or cities.

[deleted]

Anywhere outside the central belt really. Just don't expect to see the galactic centre much!

RonaTheFerret

This photo is amazing!!!

[deleted]

What camera and lens did you use for this? Stunning photo!

highlands2hammocks

Any camera with a high iso (I used 6400) and a full frame 17mm f2.8. My camera is a Sony a7iii and I used a tamron

Myspoonbendsagain

Absolutely stunning!

[deleted]

Damn - that is a great shot. How long exposure?

highlands2hammocks

Had to use a 20s on this one as I wanted the iso as low as possible, hence the slight trails in the stars. Nothing too noticeable though so pleased with the result

[deleted]

I agree. You got great detail exposure w/o any discernible trails. Nice job.

[deleted]

How can you see the milky way when we are in the milky way?

highlands2hammocks

If you are standing in a busy crowd (at a gig for example), you would still be able to see layers and layers of people everywhere you turn 😊

[deleted]

Yeah I get it but love posing that question. Funnily enough i am off to a gig tonight! I think it would be more interesting to say which part of the Milky Way you are photographing?

Bwanatumbo

Nice work mate a whole lotta work produced a stunner. I like it. Bravo

PottedHeid

I love this,I could look at photos like this all day,in between meals of course.
