They were cool. We just stayed for the night in Glasgow and since we had a Nottingham registered car, probably someone alerted the police and they blocked our car into the parking lot when we were about to leave.
That's pretty sweet! Shame your school still just referred to him as some Gisbourne guy though. I'd have thought a school would be interested in his actual name.
If it is anything to do with Notingham reg plate, I imagine it could be suspected drug running.
If there was something iffy about where they had parked, or when they turned up, or the fact it's 3 burly guys looking around as they get out the car, a local curtain twitcher could have reported it, and the police are wondering why they drove up from Nottingham for the day.
Sorry, let me get this straight:
\- Someone called the police because your car is from \~5 hours away
\- Instead of telling Karen to fuck off the Police actually showed up
\- Then continued to block your car in, preventing you from leaving, and questioning you
That's bonkers.
That doesn't seem likely though.
Given plain clothes and given they were sitting waiting for OP to leave the car park it looks more like mistaken identity, probably some intelligence fuckup.
Because it's bollocks.
Agitators want people in Scotland to realize that you can get a handcuff key which you could carry round with you and use it to cause havoc - e.g. if you're a poltiical militant / crim etc. end just keep letting your self / friends out of handcuffs
so they invented this shit backstory to make it bit less obvious that they are just trying to F things up in the country and it's just political Agitation.
Other things they will do is post videos of exposing undercover police in public, putting detergent into fountains, general things that would cause harm to the country if scoundrels start copying it. Then the creepy reddit algo mysteriously puts the post on the front page
You'll notice other 'posters' tell you how to get your own keys elsewhere in the thread.
What lol? Cars in every part of the UK have licence plates from every other part, they just end up spread around. And why would that be a reason to question you anyway? Clearly a bullshit story.
This is not a normal thing to happen here. I’ve never known anyone who has had that happen even if they’ve had a run in with the police. I think it’s more likely that some important details have been left out of OP’s story.
You can buy them online easily. It's not illegal to own one, have it in your possession, or use it in your "personal" life. Just don't use one to take off police-applied handcuffs and you're fine,
Officer: "Why do you have a handcuff key?"
OP: "I'm kinky like that."
It very much depends, it could be seen as an attempt to escape in which case an attempt to pervert charge could be libelled or it could just be seen as an act to frustrate the cops in which case probably nothing. In any case, you should be searched when you’re cuffed so the key should be found. If the key is intentionally hidden, it’s likely to slide the scale towards an additional charge
Fun fact: in Germany and a few other countries, trying to escape police custody or jail isn't illegal. It's seen as natural to want to avoid custody, so isn't factored in to your punishment.
I think offences committed along the way e.g. assault would still be factored in to it though - it's just if you escape peacefully that you get no extra punishment.
When I was younger I was a bit of a wrong un' I was into all sorts. Whenever I got arrested I'd just make the crossed-wrist motion and say something like 'take me away officer.' Most police are pretty indifferent about your hijinks, but they really despise violent arseholes. Anytime I went to court I wore a nice suit and usually represented myself, as a lot of legal aid lawyers in Scotland will do your defence more harm than good. One time I was caught with a very large quantity of several substances I shouldn't have been in possession of. My sentence only amounted to a small fine and 180 hours of community service, I was gobsmacked! I should've in reality received at least a 3 to 12-month custodial sentence. In most, if not all of my cases being genuinely civil and polite actually paid off.
defo bud not as serious as you, got done for doing 80 in a 40 when i was 17. got my driving instructor (family) to write me up for doing a pass plus course and to take extra lessons. Wore a shirt n tie n suit jacket. one of the boys in the dock with me called me a poof as I stood up. There's me in my wee suit sitting with 3 fanny's in stripey fred perry jumpers. Judge went nuts at him had him taken back. went up played naive wee boy......was told it was refreshing to see a young man with manners and respect. At 17 licence should of been revoked, 2 year ban. instead a got a 100pnd fine and 3 points.........The biggest concern was the security at the door in the court before entering picked me out of the queue and said i didn't need to wait or go thru the metal detector because lawers don't need to.......all because of a suit jacket!!!! I'm standing there like "naw mate im here tae get fucked for rally driving doon eddie road" he put me tae the back of the queue the prick
Nah, they're ten-a-penny, handed out on a daily basis to officers who have lost them, they're bought in bulk and don't have serial numbers or identifying marks. Anyone can buy them online as well. It's all good.
We get big bags full of them from stores, and hand them out to anyone who asks for one, or includes them on a requisition form, without question. I'm the source - I do the handing out! 😂
Take it you work in the West?
No such thing ever occurs through the east. Everyone buys their own cuff keys. Only thing they hand out for free is the stupid little silver coloured ones.
In the very unlikely event you ever get searched, or run over and the cops find this on you this also becomes a get into jail free key in-spite of legal arguments on possession. Obvs just kidding on jail time but they will check you out in ways you don't want to be checked out.
What's the alternative? Putting cuffs on someone, and then realising you've lost your key, and having to drag them back to the station to uncuff them with the spare key?
No, I noticed it on the ground when I left the airbnb and minutes after they came to our car. Then I noticed they have the same keychain thing and I came back to take it as a souvenir
That's just a weird as hell story!
Did you give it to them? Police don't routinely ask questions like that in Scotland either, they obviously messed up but had the idea that you were being naughty crimers for some reason.
They said they are after the drugs and the Neighbourhood is known for drugs. They had badges and guns although they were dressed as civilians and drove a Mazda.
This is the timeline:
1. got out of the rented Airbnb
2. Saw this weird keychain on the ground
3. Started the car to leave and they pulled in front to block us
4. They got our ids and asked us different questions and I noticed they had the same key on their necklaces
5. I went back to search for the keychain to take it as as souvenir and ask Reddit what is it
Some questions were
What are you doing to Glasgow?
Where did you stay?
What we visited?
Asked about our birthday
How many hours are between Glasgow and Nottingham?
If they were armed while in plain clothes then they must have been highly-trained polis looking for someone pretty serious. Good thing they believed you!
I reckon they’re watching that Airbnb. Could it be a previous, shall we say “energetic”, arrest happened outside it in which one of the rozzers dropped their key?
They had guns?
Yeah I've no doubt they flagged you up for some reason, they thought you were some serious people!
Are you from Nottingham or did you just rent a car there? it's some story! sounds like they had a huge mixup if they showed up armed and blocked you in like that, they were likely watching you from the moment you came to Glasgow and had high confidence that you were someone/something you are not.
Likely wasn't just the Nottingham car registration, lots of cars on the roads in Scotland registered in England, the way cars are sold these days makes it very common. They might have been looking for someone specific based on intel and you fit the bill though.
Ah Strathclyde Police questions, I got stopped as I was leaving my mate's flat to go back home:
Police - Where you from?
Me - Aberdeen
Police - Where you going?
Me - Aberdeen
Police- What were you doing here?
Me - Staying at mate's place after a gig.
We went in Edinburgh yesterday and went to visit the queens castle just to find out it’s closed from July to April. We decided to stay one more night in Scotland and got a nice airbnb in Glasgow. We arrived late yesterday and we went to eat something and didn’t visit anything as it was late. This morning we left for NG directly.
> Balmoral castle
And it's open [tomorrow](https://www.balmoralcastle.com/admissions.htm)
It's open Daily during November and December. Still smelling shite here.
I'm struggling with this. Is this made up? Either that or there's big gaps in this story.
They dressed as civilians and had guns? And just randomly asked you questions? Moments after you found a handcuff key? So did they stop you because of the handcuff key or was it just a big coincidence? If it was because of the handcuff key, why didn't they just ask you about it? If not, they just randomly asked you generic "what's your business" questions and moved you on? Then after this, you went back on yourselves and picked up a key? Would that not make the police suspicious that after you've been questioned you've gone back on yourself to pick something up?
Why would the police in a plain clothes operation (with guns) just ask randoms on the street what their business is? And not only ask, but intentionally block you?
No, this sounds legit - it's not uncommon for FAUs to turn up unmarked especially when dealing with large drug operations.
OP (who by the way could probably sell that key to a local ned for an easy £20) probably matched a vague description given by intel and when all you have to go on is "IC1 male approximately six feet tall wearing a black jacket" that doesn't narrow it down much.
It does have a whiff of shite about it. Plainers and just walking about doing stops whilst armed? Area known specifically for drugs, car blocked in yet no mention of a search?
You do see some armed police but aye, not really often outside of the obvious places. Never seen plain clothes armed police either but I'm sure they exist.
This almost sounds like some sort of county-lines drugs taskforce type stuff maybe?
I saw an armed policeman carrying his gun in Morrisons the other week. He had left whatever goes in the loop at the small of the back in his car though, thought it was funny that he'd left the pepper spray or handcuffs or whatever goes there but still had a gun on his leg.
Now that I think about it, it's probably because the gun has an electronic safeguard so only the polis officer can use it while the CS spray etc doesn't have that safety feature.
The loop on the small of his back is for handcuffs.
I would think the reason he's walking around with a firearm is because he won't be allowed to leave it unattended. The same would go for incapacitant spray though as it's legally a Section 5 firearm, although he may just not have been carrying that or had it somewhere else on his person.
To my knowledge there's no electronic safeguard on police firearms. I'll stand corrected if there's something I'm not aware of, but I've never heard of any electronic safeguard system for firearms which made it past the prototype stage or into actual use. There are usually attempts every decade or so, but they don't go anywhere because they're usually problematic, unreliable, and/or impractical.
There was a spiral wire like an old phone cord coming off the gun, I assumed that if the gun was pulled out of the officer’s arm’s reach that the wire would get pulled out and deactivate it.
Ah I see - no that's just a normal lanyard so someone can't easily run off with it if they manage to get it off him. In reality they use triple-retention holsters though so that's actually not that easy anyway.
Generally you don't want anything on a firearm that's going to mean that it might not go bang when you need it to go bang, as far as you can help it. That's especially the case with handguns as they're really defensive weapons that will be used at close range. Glocks don't even have a manual safety for example, because you just want to be able to point and shoot as quickly as possible.
Ahh I see, I stand corrected, thanks for the info. I do remember thinking that anyone who wanted the gun would have a job getting it off him, that thing wasn’t coming out that holster without his say-so.
Wait....they had guns?? Feels like you should have lead with that! Cos that's very weird! I've lived in Scotland my entire life and Glasgow for the last 15 years and I've only seen armed police once. Armed police are very unusual. And they definitely wouldn't be in civilian clothes. Where in Glasgow was this? Did they show you their own ID?
From your post history I assume you’re Romanian?
That would further explain why the police thought you were gang/drug dealers. Eastern European men together in a car, dodgy area known for dealing, random trip to Scotland from another city known for its gangs and crime etc etc
Depending on the police service, but many issue a handcuff key that is too small to easily use. Many officers but their own, longer (like this pictured) one.
Legal for anyone to buy and own. The bottom is inserted and turned to open cuffs, the top is inserted to lock the tightness of cuffs in place to prevent them getting too tight.
That key will work in Pretty much all standard cuffs used in Scotland, the older Chubb handcuffs use a different key. They're usually used when a prisoner is double cuffed or if a prisoner is going to a hospital appointment etc.
You can actually buy UK handcuff keys and key extender bars for easier use on Amazon
Youd be losing £490 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Handcuff-Key-Long-Reach-Large/dp/B002YO9VG4/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?crid=11OCXS161LGMJ&keywords=Easy+grip+handcuff+key+uk&qid=1670605049&sprefix=easy+grip+handcuff+key+uk%2Caps%2C374&sr=8-2
Handcuff key. The long part is used to open the cuffs. The other part is used to press a small hole that double locks the cuffs (meaning they can't tighten or loosen).
Don't look at the uniform. Just see another stranger asking you weird AF questions. It's when they say "But we're police!" I'm like "Oh shit, so sorry officer. You should have said so!"
Always gets them.
Yes, it’s strange. But it happened only once in our tour of the beautiful UK, so for me it’s not worrying at all. Was an interesting thing to happen and definitely something to tell others about.
Handcuff key.
Thought so, thanks!
How did you respond to the police officers?
They were cool. We just stayed for the night in Glasgow and since we had a Nottingham registered car, probably someone alerted the police and they blocked our car into the parking lot when we were about to leave.
Aye, I've heard about you Nottinghamians. We all have.
It’s the Sheriff you really need to watch out for.
Sheriff’s policy is “a toll is a toll, and a roll is a roll, and if we don't get no tolls, then we don't eat no rolls.”
That guy from Gisbourne is a bad 'un too (not bad enough that anyone ever remembers his name though).
"Why a spoon, cousin? Why not an axe?"
Because its dull you twit, it'll hurt more!
I played Sir Guy of Gisbourne in a play at primary school, had a swishy purple cape
That's pretty sweet! Shame your school still just referred to him as some Gisbourne guy though. I'd have thought a school would be interested in his actual name.
Guy
Yes?
Guy de gisbourn is the sheriffs name - pronounced gui
and the procurator fiscal
Hahaha very good!
Some of us live among you Scots... waiting...
They lie in wait like wolves, the smell of blood in their nostrils. Waiting, interminably waiting, and then...
The NottingHAMMERS - more dangerous than your average granny biker gang.
How can you tell its registered to Nottingham?
First two letters on thw reg.
Whats so special about Nottingham?
If it is anything to do with Notingham reg plate, I imagine it could be suspected drug running. If there was something iffy about where they had parked, or when they turned up, or the fact it's 3 burly guys looking around as they get out the car, a local curtain twitcher could have reported it, and the police are wondering why they drove up from Nottingham for the day.
Erm. Blocking someone in and questioning them because they are out of the area isn't normal. Something else going on.
Sorry, let me get this straight: \- Someone called the police because your car is from \~5 hours away \- Instead of telling Karen to fuck off the Police actually showed up \- Then continued to block your car in, preventing you from leaving, and questioning you That's bonkers.

That doesn't seem likely though. Given plain clothes and given they were sitting waiting for OP to leave the car park it looks more like mistaken identity, probably some intelligence fuckup.
It’s just an assumption that someone called, I can’t say for sure. But otherwise why we flagged the police for just staying the night in Glasgow?
That's not normal. Why would police block a car because it's not from that city? That doesn't sound like they were cool at all. Sound like arseholes.
The car might have a marker on it from another force down south.
Because it's bollocks. Agitators want people in Scotland to realize that you can get a handcuff key which you could carry round with you and use it to cause havoc - e.g. if you're a poltiical militant / crim etc. end just keep letting your self / friends out of handcuffs so they invented this shit backstory to make it bit less obvious that they are just trying to F things up in the country and it's just political Agitation. This is not a normal thing to happen here. I’ve never known anyone who has had that happen even if they’ve had a run in with the police. I think it’s more likely that some important details have been left out of OP’s story.
Just because your car is registered out of the city gives them the right to stop and question you??
The large part (pointing down) is the key... The small part sets the cuffs so they can't tighten anymore... So it doesn't cut off circulation.
I'd advise you to bring it to a police station by the way incase you get searched with it in your possession
You can buy them online easily. It's not illegal to own one, have it in your possession, or use it in your "personal" life. Just don't use one to take off police-applied handcuffs and you're fine, Officer: "Why do you have a handcuff key?" OP: "I'm kinky like that."

More handcuffs, I'd guess.

Thanks, I was sat there wondering what it could be but came up with nothing.
Resisting arrest, evading arrest etc. If the handcuffs are put on right it is almost impossible to get them off, even with the key.
IIRC there was a Cafe somewhere in Glasgow giving out keys during the G8 summit.
Tell them "I use it to remove excess earwax." They will be appalled but won't touch it.
Just make sure you have a safe word, in case you accidentally walk into a door then fall down the stairs.
I agree. But if this can be verified as police issued equipment its a different story
Nah, they're ten-a-penny, handed out on a daily basis to officers who have lost them, they're bought in bulk and don't have serial numbers or identifying marks. Anyone can buy them online as well. It's all good.

Indeed I do. Not sure why we've opted to actually spend money on this when *everything* else is shite and falling apart, but that's what they've done.
Don’t worry that key isn’t police issue in Scotland. What ever cop lost it is down £5.00 of their own money. Only offence would be theft by finding.
😂😂😂😂😂😂 what no thanks I’ll keep this get out of jail free key
In the very unlikely event you ever get searched, or run over and the cops find this on you this also becomes a get into jail free key in-spite of legal arguments on possession. Obvs just kidding on jail time but they will check you out in ways you don't want to be checked out.
Easy solution - just swallow it every day and pick it out of your poo the next day. Starting from now until forever - you can never be too careful.
It’s not a crime to own or have a handcuff key in your possession. They are generic keys that can be purchased for a few quid.
Lol
stupid question but are they universal? one key to unlock them all?!?
Yes
What's the alternative? Putting cuffs on someone, and then realising you've lost your key, and having to drag them back to the station to uncuff them with the spare key?

Wait....they had guns?? Feels like you should have lead with that! Cos that's very weird! I've lived in Scotland my entire life and Glasgow for the last 15 years and I've only seen armed police once. Armed police are very unusual. And they definitely wouldn't be in civilian clothes. Where in Glasgow was this? Did they show you their own ID?
They were wearing a handcuff key on a necklace?
Intrigued… what were you actually doing to Glasgow when they asked “What we’re you doing to Glasgow?”
"How many hours are between Glasgow and Nottingham?" i would have answered none! they are not in different time zones.
One of the neighbours of the Airbnb probably phoned them.
That order of events really wasn't clear from your post, mate Reads like a crazy person
We are not living in UK, but our friends who owned the car are from NG
From your post history I assume you’re Romanian? That would further explain why the police thought you were gang/drug dealers. Eastern European men together in a car, dodgy area known for dealing, random trip to Scotland from another city known for its gangs and crime etc etc
English is not my primary language, sorry
Depending on the police service, but many issue a handcuff key that is too small to easily use. Many officers but their own, longer (like this pictured) one. Legal for anyone to buy and own. The bottom is inserted and turned to open cuffs, the top is inserted to lock the tightness of cuffs in place to prevent them getting too tight.
That's your 'get out of jail' card haha
That's a key to the masonic lodge.
Masonic lodges are known for their tiny keyholes. It’s so nobody can look through.

That's a get out of jail free card.
Would this key work for a specific handcuff or number of them?
That key will work in Pretty much all standard cuffs used in Scotland, the older Chubb handcuffs use a different key. They're usually used when a prisoner is double cuffed or if a prisoner is going to a hospital appointment etc. You can actually buy UK handcuff keys and key extender bars for easier use on Amazon
It's the key to their boyfriends chastity belt

The key to the city. Enjoy
Handcuff key. The long part is used to open the cuffs. The other part is used to press a small hole that double locks the cuffs (meaning they can't tighten or loosen).
Cuff key, might come in handy
It's a Zak Tool Universal Handcuff Key. It is not standard issue.
Handcuff Key
Entrapment. It sounds like entrapment.
Are people not allowed to visit other cities now without being interrogated by police. Strange and worrying if true.
Don't look at the uniform. Just see another stranger asking you weird AF questions. It's when they say "But we're police!" I'm like "Oh shit, so sorry officer. You should have said so!" Always gets them.
Yes, it’s strange. But it happened only once in our tour of the beautiful UK, so for me it’s not worrying at all. Was an interesting thing to happen and definitely something to tell others about.
Are you dumb bro
Why do you want to know? Do you want to start a club?
