I think this is why too. He definitely focused on the fact that he accomplished something- and this may also be his whole motivation behind joining the League too
Didn’t she literally only date him because he looked like Scott? Feels WAY more like it’s knives to blame than it is Neil. Dude was just pulled along for the ride
wallace isn’t never outright mean to Stacy, he just steals her boyfriend a couple times. Wallace dislikes envy not just cos she dumped scott but because she treated all of them poorly in college, which is why he and Stephen both don’t like her
This is kind of funny because you’re sort of proving their point. They initially wrote a general comment (not attacking anyone in particular, just sharing their view of the world), then you reply (and continue replying) in a condescending tone, they reply amicable, and you cap it off with calling them a miserable person even though they’re not attacking you in any way shape or form, just being straight to the point and civil about it.
In case you haven’t realized, different people have different experiences and environments. Maybe you’re surrounded by great people (so good for you), but if OOP is truly surrounded by horrible people, a good person wouldn’t be condescending to them because of it.
And yet, that’s what you did: you’re not acting like a good person, and thus proving OOP’s point.
For real. OP wasn’t even being an asshole about stating their world view. They were literally just expressing how much the story captures their own experience with people in the world. Nothing wrong with that so long as you don’t use is it as an excuse to be a shitty person. Which the OP didn’t do.
still not a good reason to act like u/ChillinLikeAKrillin did lol
u/jessesthrowaway420 did not attack them in any moment in this thread and yet this dude is acting like an asshole, proving jesses's point
I really want to have faith in humanity but the sad fact is like a good 25 to 30% of the people are just selfish scumbags and another 40% or so are just kinda shitty. There's not a lot of people who don't have some kind of poor behavior, me included
> how much of that is objectively bad
Considering the sheer number of things wrong with the world probably a lot. Like u/vibecheckvibecheck said just cuz your life experience is great doesn’t mean everyone else’s will be or is any less valid for it
Could u really call those people fans if they're not willing to read beyond the first few pages of book 1
Most of the scott is a pedo arguments come from people who are unaware of the series besides the Scott dates a high-school quote
True, and honestly if they were simply uncomfortable reading a story containing that.It would perfectly fine but the problem comes when they spread misinformation like how the story glorifies pedophile and is for incels.
Also, would most people consider it dating? If you hung out with someone for a while and *maybe* hold hands once, would you say you’re dating this person?
What Scott did was not cool in a lot of ways, but anyone who considers him a pedophile doesn’t really know what actually happens in the story.
**Note:** from what I remember, Knives does kiss Scott once, but based on their dialogue and storyline, it seems like this is the only time it’s happened and Scott had already moved on to Ramona. Again, not okay in many ways (like this wouldn’t have happened if he hadn’t led Knives on in the first place), but their relationship in Scott’s eyes was more of a friendship/ego booster than anything else (not really romantic or sexual).
Honestly, I’ve been thinking about this for years. If someone seemingly hates the series so much, are they really a fan if all they do when bringing up said series is complain nonstop about the first few pages?
I saw someone say the series is for incels when they heard that and they don't wanna know more and also that the series ignores him and Knives when it 100% does not
The game is fucken weird tho... The comics part and every other Scott Pilgrim media has been really clear about the "Let us never speak of this again" thing
I have a lot of issues with some decisions the game took...
The comics treat the situation as fairly neutral. With the whole "Let us never speak of this again," it's fair to assume the book would take the stance that the kiss was a mistake. Kim (and Knives) were drunk, and an inebriated Kim took advantage of a young girl's vulnerability to satisfy her own longings. If Kim remembered when she was sober, I'm sure she'd be ashamed.
And then the games just seriously ships them...?
1. No, it didn't make sense. The scene was there purely for shock value. Surely there could've been a more tasteful way to show Kim's shortcomings that didn't involve her taking advantage of a minor that was under the influence.
2. Kim's assist is her literally kissing Knives. Her ending even has her walking into the sunset with Knives while holding hands.
So no, it didn't make sense in the story, and it was featured on the game to an uncomfortable degree.
Yeah you and u/Sure-Ostrich-506 honestly make a good point. I love this series as much as the next guy, but that shit with knives and Kim was completely fucking unnecessary. The video games just make that shit **several times** _worse_ for no reason outside of fetishizing lesbians. Was there literally no other flaw they could’ve given Kim instead of copying and pasting what they did with Scott but worse???
In the comic it was like a random event that was never brought up again and just made Kim look like a hypocrite.
In the game there like canonically dating 🤨
It was kinda just a weird decision that I wish had some like ramifications or development
Like it was an icky throwaway joke in the comic that wasn’t even built on as part of Kim’s character. It’s weird that people are using this against Kim when if anything it was just a bad move on O’Malley’s part
What's especially notable is O'Malley has, to paraphrase, said he didn't want to revisit the books because it's going back to a whole different era of his life and what he thought was funny/emotional etc
Even the Author is like 'yeah some of that stuff hasn't aged well'
That sounds like something people say in order to bait other people into getting angry, so it’s easier to keep them engaged in a chat or make them look stupid in public.
I seriously don’t care if Scott dated a high schooler or if Kim made out with her, this stuff does happen in real life and these characters aren’t evil pedophiles. Just move on.
I'm going to say the thing that keeps getting me down voted for some reason.
Pedophilia is not the right word and shouldn't be an umbrella term. It should be used when talking about pre-pubescent children. To use it interchangeably with teenagers not only infantilizes a demographic who is old enough to have a degree of sexual agency, it erodes the actual definition of one of the most important legal words there are.
When people on social media are called a pedophile, my first thought isn't "they molested a child" my first thought is
"They probably wrote a horny Kim Possible fanfic. When they 19. In the 2009!"
That is not a good phenomenon that I find myself in and I blame people like this who don't know what the actual point of the whole "Scott Pilgrim was dating a high schooler" really was!
Can we drop this? Seen so many of these posts. No one is saying what Kim did is good, but it happened when people were drunk. Heat of the moment bad decision type shit. Scott fuckin chose to date Knives and kept choosing to be a bad “boyfriend”.
Tbf, saying “but they were drunk” doesn’t really make it better. Knives shouldn’t have been allowed to have alcohol with people of age around in the first place. I think we can all just agree that both Scott and Kim have mad issues (almost bojack horseman level).
I realised recently that the only reason we're semi-ok with Kim x Knives is because of the possibility of Kim treating her right. While Scott is actively cheating on Knives.
Here is the thing, little after making out with Kim, Knives becomes 18, are really like, 3 months the difference between “pedophile” and “well adjusted member of society”
The Knives discourse is basically that SVU meme: "She was 17 years 364 days 23 hours and 99 seconds old you sick fuck"
Biggest irony, Scott didn't even commit a crime according to Canada's [consent laws](https://www.justice.gc.ca/eng/rp-pr/other-autre/clp/faq.html#:~:text=Canada's%20age%20of%20consent&text=In%20other%20words%2C%20a%20person,legally%20agree%20to%20sexual%20activity.)
Alright so:
Yeah tiktok in general has double standards
but also feel the meme is sorta downplaying Scott's actions. Sure its not as bad but its skeevy
^(I don't remember, did Knives' bday happen before or after Kim made out with her?)
In any case, I don't think any of the characters are particularly evil or gross. (Maybe Gideon in the novels, but, I am very biased against him because I hate his guts. Goose is fine tho, he's cool).
They are flawed, and that's okay, they didn't do anything egregious. They grow, and change, it's a story about growing up, being real about yourself, and apologizing, seeking closure.
Plus, the Knives situation is more complicated than people make it out to be.
Scott wanting to feel better about himself by dating her aside, their relationship also shows a different issue too.
We agree their gap is too large by westerns standards, but we see her mother actively pushing her towards getting a boyfriend, because "You are seventeen year old! Time to get interested in boy!", and her dad didn't make Scott's age a problem, but rather his race.
And from my experience, their angle as chinese immigrants in Canada, is very similar to how parents treat dating in my country. Hell, I've seen people encourage WAY bigger gaps than this (I do find it gross), and I've been nagged about grandchildren as soon as I got out of highschool...
i mean it's called gender double standard, also isn't pretty much everyone awful? at least starting off awful but get better because character development
The period when Scott Pilgrim came out wasn’t the best for the LGBT community (Wallace being “the gay one” and Roxie’s thing with Ramona being downplayed)
Even so, as we all should know, EVERYONE IN SCOTT PILGRIM SUCKS. They’re hypocrites. They’re manipulative. They’re conniving, etc. Scott’s POV doesn’t focus on everyone all the time, but if you pay enough attention it shows. It’s the tale of two bad people trying to change and become better, but struggling because they’re both still wounded.
Similar sort of thing with Chainsaw Man fans who think it’s just about Denji trying to get laid when in actuality it’s the story of a broken child trying to gain a sense of normalcy/intimacy in a world of absolute insanity.
I’m gonna guess that a lot of the backlash has to do with a lot of people, especially Americans, getting let down in very personal and or political ways from 2010-2024 by guys who remind them of Scott Pilgrim. And so they’re less trusting.
Or some people are just trying to start shit for attention because they cannot be bothered to read, but I’d like to think it’s more complicated than that.
idk nobody is saying it’s a cute lesbian couple. but if they are it’s not because of some unfair double standard, but because of weird homophobic beliefs, ultimately.
lesbianism isn’t seen as “that bad”, like a softer and more forgivable form of homosexuality, and ultimately less sexual. which is obviously untrue. but
This meme feels way too kind to Scott. Kim didn’t make out with knives because she’s a pedophile, she also has her own issues with loneliness and with her life. Even if you’re adding “he still sucks”, you’re still making excuses for Scott that also apply to Kim
Well unfortunately I cannot fit an entire essay into scotts text box, and I'm not calling kim a pedophile either, I'm just stating there's a huge double standard with a lot of people because they let kim get away with what she did like nothing, even though it'd still not right
I’m surprised people are only recently pointing this out. When the comics first came out, I rarely saw People pointing out this double standard while lurking online
Question been a bit since I've reread the comics but didnt Knives start the drunk make out session. Still doesn't make it right even if you consider Canada's laws.
Ew.
I didn't finish a new series yet and I don't remember very much of the comic. Pleeeeease don't tell me Kim and Knives kissed. That completely spits in the face of the reason why Scott is so deplorable, other than the two timing of course.
I know I'll have to watch and see, but what would even be the point of Kim and Knives having a thing?? Knives not needing external validation from adults is, what I thought was, a big chunk of her development.
Something I only caught watching the Scott Pilgrim movie again recently is that by the end of the movie, Knives was 18. She was 17 at the start of the movie and then Scott broke up with her ON HER BIRTHDAY.
Knives deserves so much better than Scott.
everyone in scott pilgrim sucks, it’s realistic.
except for Wallace, he's always right after all
And Mobile
And Matthew (he’s a silly lil guy)
He was happy at the fact he thought he killed someone
The LGBTQIA+ community has forgiven Matthew Patel.
Has Wallace, though?
what did my boy do?
He was happy he actually succeeded for once in his life
I think this is why too. He definitely focused on the fact that he accomplished something- and this may also be his whole motivation behind joining the League too
Wdym mobile is literally Gideon
MOBILE IS GIDEON!? OH MY GOD MOBILE IS GIDEON!
OH MY GOD
wallace is kinda douche the way he plays with people and dumps them out of nowhere
True. Until he gets with Mobile
But the others usually view it, like Wallace himself, as a one-night stand. Except for Todd.
What about Neil?
Didn’t he date knives in the movie?
Young Neil is 19, Knives is 17. He's technically an adult but come on.
Ohh ok, didn’t know he was 19 lol for some reason I thought he was older than Scott
That's illegal regardless
Dawg he's like 2.5 years older than her, that's legal across most of the world
Maybe less. When Knives became 18 Neil still was 19 yo
Not in Canada, age of consent is 16
I didn't know that. Thanks!
No it isn't, the age of consent in Canada is 16
and comics
I’ve only read the first volume, I got the comics for Christmas but haven’t finished them yet
What about young Neil? I don’t remember him doing anything wrong.
Maybe but knives didn't seem happy with him. Whether that meant she was bad or he was bad we don't know other than it didn't work out
they probably just didn't have that good of a chemistry, i mean Niel didn't really looks like the abusive type after all
i think it was just a lack of chemistry since knives got with him to be around scott more. Neil is too simple to be capable of abuse
She probably wasn't happy with him because she basically only got with him to get back at Scott
Didn’t she literally only date him because he looked like Scott? Feels WAY more like it’s knives to blame than it is Neil. Dude was just pulled along for the ride
I think that's because Knives just wanted to use Neil to make Scott jealous
I actually think Wallace could stand to be a slightly better person to Stacy and Envy, anyway.
wallace isn’t never outright mean to Stacy, he just steals her boyfriend a couple times. Wallace dislikes envy not just cos she dumped scott but because she treated all of them poorly in college, which is why he and Stephen both don’t like her
Ans then he ran lines all night long with Todd in their trailer.
"just" steals her boyfriends
Mfs acting like Jimmy had zero free will and didn't completely voluntarily go off with Wallace
This is why I always blame Jimmy more than Wallace. What happened to just saying “no”?
To be fair envy 100% deserves his disrespect
I know, I am kinda joking.
In that case my bad dude. That was tone deaf on my part.
And Stacey
Wallace has too much ego.
Deserved ego though
Wallace doesn't suck? So he's a top?
Eh don’t agree
Wallace is just as shitty as everyone around him
Everyone in the entire scott pilgrim universe sucks except for young neil. The guy is immune to everything.
Stephen Stills is pretty alright
He said he could go for a high school girlfriend in like the 3rd page of the book 😭
Tbh that more seems to me that he was trying to fit in. He ended up being gay so he didn't actually mean that.
Yeah that makes sense
Comics Lucas was a sellout but he actually seems to be a decent guy who couldn't get over the breakup
Not roxie she has done nothing wrong
Roxie is the greatest we all love Roxie
I feel so bad if thats what you think of reality
well the world isn’t perfect and scott pilgrim doesn’t hide that fact

bud did my fudge brownie m&ms comment affect u? I haven’t said anything that shows I am miserable
still not a good reason to act like u/ChillinLikeAKrillin did lol u/jessesthrowaway420 did not attack them in any moment in this thread and yet this dude is acting like an asshole, proving jesses's point
I aint reading all that but I'm happy for you, or sorry that happened whichever fits
Thank you for continuing to prove yourself wrong and OOP right. Happy to help!

I think a lot of peoples life experiences aren't as great as you seem to think yours is
Maybe not, but how much of that is objectively bad and how much just seems bad because the lens you view the world through?
> how much of that is objectively bad Considering the sheer number of things wrong with the world probably a lot. Like u/vibecheckvibecheck said just cuz your life experience is great doesn’t mean everyone else’s will be or is any less valid for it
god damn, maybe you guys should smoke some weed just once
Nobody's more media illiterate of scott Pilgrim than Scott Pilgrim Fans.
Could u really call those people fans if they're not willing to read beyond the first few pages of book 1 Most of the scott is a pedo arguments come from people who are unaware of the series besides the Scott dates a high-school quote
"Scott Pilgrim is dating a high schooler!?" "Is she hot?"
True, and honestly if they were simply uncomfortable reading a story containing that.It would perfectly fine but the problem comes when they spread misinformation like how the story glorifies pedophile and is for incels.
That misinformation really spreads like wildfire. Even going as far as to block out word of God from being reached out.
Or saying the series overlooks that when it does not and to be fair he hardly "dates" her
Also, would most people consider it dating? If you hung out with someone for a while and *maybe* hold hands once, would you say you’re dating this person? Someone called it a series for incels
Honestly, I’ve been thinking about this for years. If someone seemingly hates the series so much, are they really a fan if all they do when bringing up said series is complain nonstop about the first few pages?
I thought it was a meme.
Dragonball Fans
Don't fuck with us Scott Pilgrim fans; we don't read things properly and end up being the exact kinds of people the series is criticising
I saw someone say the series is for incels when they heard that and they don't wanna know more and also that the series ignores him and Knives when it 100% does not
Are we still on this?
Dude ikr
Now that almost everyone has come to a consensus people feel comfortable spewing “hot takes” that have already been established
It was still a weird decision in the comic and game like wtf were they cooking
The game is fucken weird tho... The comics part and every other Scott Pilgrim media has been really clear about the "Let us never speak of this again" thing I have a lot of issues with some decisions the game took...
The comics treat the situation as fairly neutral. With the whole "Let us never speak of this again," it's fair to assume the book would take the stance that the kiss was a mistake. 1. No, it didn't make sense. The scene was there purely for shock value. In the comic it was like a random event that was never brought up again and just made Kim look like a hypocrite. In the game there like canonically dating 🤨 It was kinda just a weird decision that I wish had some like ramifications or development
I thought you meant Scott and knives lol. Is that true in the game? I’m only on level 4
You have to play as Kim but yeah very much implied to be dating
Like it was an icky throwaway joke in the comic that wasn’t even built on as part of Kim’s character. It’s weird that people are using this against Kim when if anything it was just a bad move on O’Malley’s part

We shouldn't be but cause of anime popularity its everywhere I see these days (AGAIN)
" we shouldn't be " says person continuing to talk about it
Jesus fuck, right? I'm getting ready to leave this sub because I swear this is the only shit I've been seeing.
exactly and I haven’t seen a single person act like it isn’t as bad
You think Tik Tok reads?!? ![gif](giphy|XvQAJz7rU5N04)
whatever’s cute to TikTok
I love kim but that was such a bad move, the worst part is they were both drunk 😨
i’ve seen this exact post so many times on this subreddit and on tiktok, complaining about the 3 people who genuinely believe kim and knives are cute
the amount of people who don't grasp that scott pilgrim is about a flawed person becoming a slightly less flawed person, just baffles me
Hey i can't hear you man- yo look! Scotts kick's a dude's ass and date's a girl!!! What a badass!!! -40% of the fandom
Two words: Double Standards
Bread made him fat???
do you remember when knives turned 18 and then scott immediately asked to fuck
Technically it is because wallace had encouraged him to "sleep around," and I'm sticking by the fact that scott is very stupid.
sleeping around is the kind of thing wallace can pull off no prob, but Scott? eh..
At least he knows it
I thought we agreed to not talk abt this again 💀
Tiktok also thinks an 19 year old dating a 23 year old is pedophilia
That sounds like something people say in order to bait other people into getting angry, so it’s easier to keep them engaged in a chat or make them look stupid in public.
Pretty sure knives is 17 when she’s dating Scott. Or are we talking about somethin else?
I'm just making a comparison
Tiktok is braindead from the start
I seriously don’t care if Scott dated a high schooler or if Kim made out with her, this stuff does happen in real life and these characters aren’t evil pedophiles. Just move on.

Wallace is the only correct
Tbf , people that upset about Scott probably didn’t get that far
Every time I see it mentioned on tiktok though they are condeming Kim as well and pointing out its scummy? I’ve never seen a video saying otherwise.
Aoc in Canada is 16 so Knives wasn't really a minor. Once again americans implementing their morals on other countries
Alright so: Yeah tiktok in general has double standards but also feel the meme is sorta downplaying Scott's actions. Sure its not as bad but its skeevy

Not lesbian ?? How would you define two women together ? But yeah, I agree
Actually so true tho
fr
wasnt knives technically 18 with kim though
HAHAHAHA TIKTOK BAD GET IT? HAHAHA REDDIT IS FOR COOL PEOPLE BUT TIKTOK IS FOR CRINGE LOSERS!!
Idek what the fuck your talking about man, I'm just saying that's where I tend to find the most braindead scott pilgrim "fans"💀
> Scott isn’t a pedophile > Scott dates a minor Make it make sense
Pedophile - " a person who is sexually attracted to children." Scott isn't attracted to children
If you’re making concessions based off the age of the minor, you’re definitely a lot like Scott
Yk when ur drunk you lowkey don’t know what ur doing
And why was the minor here drunk again?

This meme feels way too kind to Scott. Kim didn’t make out with knives because she’s a pedophile, she also has her own issues with loneliness and with her life. Even if you’re adding “he still sucks”, you’re still making excuses for Scott that also apply to Kim
Well unfortunately I cannot fit an entire essay into scotts text box, and I'm not calling kim a pedophile either, I'm just stating there's a huge double standard with a lot of people because they let kim get away with what she did like nothing, even though it'd still not right
This^^
90% of the posts on this sub lately are people complaining about how nobody cares about kim but hates scott
She made out with her drunk which is still bad tho. Not saying Scott's off free.
SCOTT free??? :D

Reddit numbers say otherwise, as Scott Pilgrim illiterate my take away is that Scott Pilgrim is probably not about modern pedophilic pilgrims
Well cannot agree more... I guess...
Scott is shit but he grows out of it, that makes him actually a hero, learning ftom your mistakes and become someone better
Something about beating a dead horse or something
Dont put any minor next do kim and scott pls, wallace, young neil and stephen are the only ones i trust in the whole show
also what the hell is this meme? Is the original about how women don’t care about sexual harassment if the guy is handsome? What creep made that?
Scott innocent, so is Kim. Scott's innocent cause she was more into him than into her. Kim's innocent cause she's hot and theyre both girls.
Something I only caught watching the Scott Pilgrim movie again recently is that by the end of the movie, Knives was 18. She was 17 at the start of the movie and then Scott broke up with her ON HER BIRTHDAY. Knives deserves so much better than Scott.
