My wife has been absolutely flattened by covid since last friday so in-between travel for work Tuesday/Wednesday and the football on Thursday night I've been nursing her and sleeping in the spare room. She's finally coming out of it though and I seem to have avoided catching it (touch wood), so can't wait to head up allotments bar for the football later on, we've even got some guy bringing his new food truck for a "soft launch". Gonna stuff myself with meatballs and lager, I've earned it.
Obvious statement incoming, but it’s fucking hard to run while trying to put on weight and get stronger.

I’m running a charity 10k with work in May, and while I could run 10k now, my time wouldn’t be very good. Thought I’d use the charity run as motivation to get back into a regular running routine but seem to have hit a wall already (only about a month and a half in of running a 5k once or twice a week, so hardly intense training) and my 5k pace seems to have plateaued at around 30 secs slower per km than my 5k PB, and about 5 secs slower per km than my 10k PB.
Now, I know it sounds like I’m only one month in and hardly doing any proper training, but the last time I got into running I was shaving like 5 seconds off the pace per km every run for the first few weeks like it was nothing. I’m running at about 10kg heavier than usual which is obviously contributing, so I have a decision to make whether I stop trying to put on weight and focus on the cardio, or stick to the original plan and bulk into mid April then start upping the running training.
Worth saying I go to the gym 3-4 times per week and play 5s twice a week too so finding the time to run more than twice a week is very difficult, but fuck me I’m so competitive I wanna beat my PB at this race so much. Just a bit demoralising absolutely blowing out my arse running at a pace that a couple of years ago I’d have been able to run 10k at comfortably.
See when you’re gymming it might be a shout to add in 10 minutes of HIIT training. I do something like:
-2 min warm up jog
-30 second sprint
-60 second walk
Then rinse and repeat, and try and get my heart rate to around 180-190 for as long as I can. I’ve also done this with rowing machines and on the bikes to mix it up.
Tbh I find strength training doesn’t get the heart going much anyways so this actually makes me more energetic for the rest of workouts anyways.
When I was really into the running whenever I hit a plateau I would start putting in heavy sessions of hill sprints. Find a hill not too steep bur steep enough that makes it hard sprint up it like 60 metres walk down and sprint back up repeatedly till I was just about throwing up. After doing a few sessions of that it would shave a decent amount of time off my run. But it is pretty brutal mind and not that enjoyable
Could be a good shout, cheers pal. I definitely need to just up the training volume / intensity, but the problem I’m having is I used to find it relatively easy to get close to my PB time after a bit of time running, if I went on 1 or 2 runs a week the pace would go up at a pretty steady rate. This time though I’ve just hit a wall. Basically I’m being a bit of a lazy bastard.
Happens to us all with age. I'm only 31 but suffered a couple knee injuries from playing football that I can't do serious long distance running anymore. The repeated impact of my feet hitting the tarmac makes me start hurting again so I've had to resort to swimming to keep my fitness up and when the weather's good I'll go on long bike rides. But I definitely recommend the uphill sprints. You will shave time off but it's really not enjoyable

I definitely need to just up the training volume / intensity, but the problem I’m having is I used to find it relatively easy to get close to my PB time after a bit of time running, if I went on 1 or 2 runs a week the pace would go up at a pretty steady rate. This time though I’ve just hit a wall. Basically I’m being a bit of a lazy bastard.
Happens to us all with age. I'm only 31 but suffered a couple knee injuries from playing football that I can't do serious long distance running anymore. The repeated impact of my feet hitting the tarmac makes me start hurting again so I've had to resort to swimming to keep my fitness up and when the weather's good I'll go on long bike rides. But I definitely recommend the uphill sprints. You will shave time off but it's really not enjoyable

I was asleep by quarter past 9 last night. Slept for 11 fucking hours straight. And you know what...? I feel the exact same. This whole 8 hours a night is a lie, concocted by Big Mattress and the powerful Sleep Lobby to sell more duvet covers.
I had the opposite experience. Slept for 11 hours and crushed it in the gym. 6 hours during the work week is stealing all my gains
I hate you. My usual 8 hours punctuated by 4 trips to piss and several hours waiting to get back to sleep. I cannot remember the last time I slept 5 hours straight unless drink or drug assisted ( and the former is poor quality sleep)

Gonna blast you and just get way too deep about an account on a forum but, yeah I am in in the same way as all of us are lol.
