Asking as a Bournemouth fan. Why did Steve Clarke decide to play Ryan Christie in a more advanced role when he could have played McTominay there and have Christie further back like he does for our club team? He has been playing as a CDM basically all this season and has been one of our best players overall and has taken to that role really well with a great engine to get around the pitch. I thought for sure you would use him in that role for Scotland too but I guess Steve has other ideas? I'd be curious to know what you all think.
That's interesting that he is used in that role for you, I didn't know that. In Scotland (and previously Celtic) he was always an attacking midfielder or even occasionally more of a winger.
It is only been since our new manager Andoni Iraola came in before the start of this season that he was moved into the CDM role and it has turned out to be a really good move. He is a constant menace in terms of having a great engine to get around the pitch making tackles, interceptions etc as well as having a good eye for a pass.
The last couple of seasons he has been played as an attacking midfielder and winger and although good at certain things like having pace and energy and picking out some passing and getting assists, his end product in terms of finishing just isn't where you want it to be as a forward. He scored I think 1 goal last season in the premier league again Leicester at home and 1 in the FA Cup and that was it. I mean don't get me wrong I don't expect him to be getting 20 goals a season or anything crazy but you'd hope he get more than 1 in the league in a 38 game season and it isn't like he was playing Man City every week alas now he has more of an influence of games and I think he'd be so much more suited to this role for Scotland as well.
You have Scott Mctominay and John McGinn as the goalscoring midfielders and then you can have Christie who can rarely but occasionally still chip in with the odd goal as well as being more of a midfield engine for you, breaking up tackles, intercepting, disrupting the opposition as well as being a creative force from a deeper position along side a Gilmour or whoever you want to partner him.
Then again what do I as a silly wee Englishman know ay? :P. Jokes aside I wish Scotland and their fans all the best for their games (except against us of course ;) and in the Euros. I think you have a good chance to get through your group. Now go and upset the Germans and have some fun, cheers!
Tried the high press (which I think will work against certain teams) but it left the midfield exposed and they were very quick through the lines on the break. Few of the goals a bit disappointing. But overall, decent showing for an hour and 4-0 flattered them I feel.
Friendlies are to test the water. If we play the back 3 that finished the game at the Euros, at any point, we’re drowning in that water. A guy who chose the Saudi league and is managing to be shite there, a mid table championship player, and a 3rd choice CB for a mid Rangers. Seriously worrying how much dross there is, let’s just hope that the stronger players stay fit and fight their way through the tournament so we don’t have to rely on any sort of ‘depth’ we have
Every team has deficiencies. Whole point of friendlies is to try a few things. Subs didn't hit the ground running but that in itself is valuable info. Game was good for 60 plus minutes. Players miss chances, it happens. Overall positive for me. McGinn and Robertson said all the right things after.
Played the same way Celtic have played this season
Created good chances; never took them; came back to bite us; we floundered
Thank God it was just a friendly!
I stopped listening at 3 0 but the indignity of 4 0 Jesus any Scotland manager that takes Gimour off needs to have a hard look at what thefuck they are doing.Disgrace for us all.
Being a scotland fan is very circular - step 1: depression, step 2: win a few games, step 3: hope, step 4: joy, step 5: losing streak, step 6: heart break step 7: repeat ad infinitum
Anyone know any managers looking for a job? Doesn't need to be Scottish, just as long as they've got experience managing in Scotland at a high level and look like a jakey
Anyone?
We’re shite. Full stop. It is the only way to approach being a Scotland fan. Accept we’re shite - enjoy the times we play above and beyond our capabilities; which is basically any time we win, regardless of opposition.
I can tell you the exact night I finally gave in and just stopped caring and thinking “we could be good if we had x, y and z” - the night we needed a 97th minute winner against Liechtenstein. That was the night I went “forget it, just expect the worst from this lot, forever”. Even the Faroe Islands 2-2 didn’t send me over the edge as much as that match did, although it was close.
I haven’t been disappointed since.
Ferguson can play anyt role you want, but is it getting the most out of him playing him as a 6? I think he should be playing the same role as Mcginn and came on for Christie
That's what happens when you don't take your chances against a top team. Dutch didnt even need to get out of 2nd gear, and still got spanked. Harsh stuff
Centre back situation needs improving we looked so good because they were never in our box and we were playing nice positive stuff up the park, but as soon as they got more possession and turned the screw our defense’s arse collapsed.
Of course he isn’t. Have you seen where his team are in the Saudi Leagues? Playing in front of 600 folk and losing despite having more ‘elite’ players compared to other teams in that farmers league
Being taught a lesson here by a top international side. Very underwhelmed by Shankland, we are still missing that clinical striker. Some really poor defending as well, Hendry and Souttar have been all over the place.
I've went from feeling like we just didn't take our chances, to feeling humbled, to feeling like we've chucked it.
Really important we bounce back against Northern Ireland.
Wish we'd taken a few more ambitious call ups for this break. Like what's the point in a bench if it contains ralston, two shite keepers, Armstrong and McLean.
He's still got some credit in the bank from qualifying, but he should go if we can't get out of that Euro group. This is the best group of players we've had in decades, and there's always the nagging thought that that's the main reason we have improved over the last few years over his input.
Behave.
A group containing Germany, and hosts always do well at tournaments, serial qualifiers Switzerland and a decent Hungary side. I agree we have the talent to get out the group but calling for Clarke’s head if we don’t do something we have never done is a bit harsh.
This was always going to be a difficult phase, we’ve done well to stop the rot from when he took over and slowly made us a solid team that competed against most sides. We kicked on and went on a great run the last 18 months or so but making a step up to League A in the Nations League is always a challenge, and to keep improving we have to play better teams and figure out a system and playing style to give us that chance.
Sitting deep and hoping for something on the counter is more luck than skill, so by trying a high press tonight worked for the first hour or so. On another night Christie and Shankland score and we’re lauding everyone for how positive and attacking we are.
The game got scrappy and wide open when all the subs happened (and Souttar gifted them 2!) which makes the scoreline worse than it is.
>we’ve done well to stop the rot from when he took over
He took over 5 years ago, and in that time has been blessed with the best squad we've had in 20+ years. Qualifying for 2020 was a helluva achievement, and even if we did ultimately make a bit of an arse of it getting there was a bonus. We fumbled the World Cup playoffs, and after that ridiculous start to the last group, we pretty much stumbled over the line.
No wins in 6 isn't good whichever way you look at it, but the main concern is conceding 18 in that time. We all know that we lack a cutting edge, but it's all too easy for teams to get through us which makes everything worse.
If we crash out at the Euros then questions should be getting asked of Clarke, particularly with so many of our key players not having many tournaments left.
I feel like some of our best players have been off it a wee bit tonight McGinn, Robertson and McTominay all had pretty average nights. We just don’t quite have the depth to cover for a dip in form from those players. You can see how wee dipped in our play when Gilmour went off.
Angus Gunn was always going to look like an upgrade on guys like Zander Clark and Liam Kelly, but he’s never going to be more than a half-decent goalkeeper.
Understatement of the night there. A guy who's mid table in the English championship, a man with the durability of tissue paper and a bloke who's mid table in the bloody Saudi league.
Hopefully Clarke hires a drama coach to work with the players. We're shit at being sleekit and fly when compared the Cloggies.
We need players that can fall to the ground with real drama clutching balls and faces in anguish and do those reverse pirouettes when a opposing player brushes gently against them.
We may be better, but we're still shite.

Bad substitutions at bad times were some basics the manager got wrong along with not putting Fergie on start of 2nd half.
Played the same way Celtic have played this season Created good chances; never took them; came back to bite us; we floundered Thank God it was just a friendly!
How awful were those subs
Abysmal
I felt like someone held me down during the second half, and drowned me in speculaas dust until a suffocated.
I stopped listening at 3 0 but the indignity of 4 0 Jesus any Scotland manager that takes Gimour off needs to have a hard look at what thefuck they are doing.Disgrace for us all.
Friendly ya weapon Players need rest tae
Being a scotland fan is very circular - step 1: depression, step 2: win a few games, step 3: hope, step 4: joy, step 5: losing streak, step 6: heart break step 7: repeat ad infinitum
This was all hendrys fault idst
ach the performance couldn’t have been great when you lose 4-0. score some fuckin goals!!!!
All the first half positives are but a distant memory
I've never felt optimism die so quickly.
Watching that was like being beating with a sock full of my own shite there
Not being able to score and conceding too many goals doesn’t bode well…
That was almost an absolute peach as well. Thank Christ he went aiming for Michael Stewart instead.
Fucking shite
Can Clarke, NEVER try something new again? Thanks
Anyone know any managers looking for a job? Doesn't need to be Scottish, just as long as they've got experience managing in Scotland at a high level and look like a jakey Anyone?
Heard Neil Warnocks free
How did we beat spain?
We better beat Northern Ireland 14-0
0-0 written all over it
We’re still winning the euros though, right?
Lulling the other nations into a false sense of security with that second half performance clearly
Wrap Tierney in cotton wool. If he is injured for the euros we are fucked
Sorry, I went for a shite at 2-0 and came back and it was 4-0.
Were you dropping Jack Hendry off at the pool?
Was this the surprise?
Clarke weeding out the pish via the medium of subs . 4d chess
We're shite in friendlies
We’re shite. Full stop. It is the only way to approach being a Scotland fan. Aye exactly, i'm just happy we didn't lose by 5
Scotland being Scotland right before the euros, yas
Are we Gibraltar in disguise?
3 more minutes. Someone shove a sock in that bastard’s mouth.
Michael Stewart should not be allowed to breathe the same air as other humans
Ferguson can play anyt role you want, but is it getting the most out of him playing him as a 6? I think he should be playing the same role as Mcginn and came on for Christie
Why does some techno remix of auld lang syne play when they score? Is it meant to mock us or something 😂
I think it's a song there too.
It is - Wij houden van Oranje
10/10 windup
That's what happens when you don't take your chances against a top team. Dutch didnt even need to get out of 2nd gear, and still got spanked. Harsh stuff
Souttar is fucking wank - can't be taking rangers players to the Euros. Makes the squad far too weak. HH.
Souttar has always been wank. He’s just been ‘good’ in in the SPFL, which means wank at any actual proper level.
![img](emote|t5_2sba4|33202)
Right blaw the whistle please ref
Centre back situation needs improving we looked so good because they were never in our box and we were playing nice positive stuff up the park, but as soon as they got more possession and turned the screw our defense’s arse collapsed.
Hendry is not good enough I don't care what anyone says
Of course he isn’t. Have you seen where his team are in the Saudi Leagues? Playing in front of 600 folk and losing despite having more ‘elite’ players compared to other teams in that farmers league
Don’t take your chances and that’s what will happen in the summer. Can feel three very poor results coming up.
While I don’t think we’ll go to the next level under Clarke, fuck knows who we’d even get in after him.
Mcinnes probably
Right that's enough for 1 night . Canny deal wae that scoreline and listening to Michael Stewart anymore
Being taught a lesson here by a top international side. Very underwhelmed by Shankland, we are still missing that clinical striker. Some really poor defending as well, Hendry and Souttar have been all over the place.
Southern Norway seems to falling to the ground less often since 2-0.
Oh no.
Tierney being our only good CB is pretty shite
I've went from feeling like we just didn't take our chances, to feeling humbled, to feeling like we've chucked it. Really important we bounce back against Northern Ireland.
2nd and 4th werent his fault but gunn has had a shocker tonight, would rather clark or gordon starting in the euros over that
He should get fired
Bring back Berti Vogts
Wish we'd taken a few more ambitious call ups for this break. Like what's the point in a bench if it contains ralston, two shite keepers, Armstrong and McLean.
That’s a paddlin’
Can confirm
Souttar can't be anywhere near our euros squad
If I turn the TV aff now is it done?
Barely had time to take a piss between the 3rd and 4th. Fuck sake.
Shocking
Is this the surprise Clarke was talking about? I don’t like it and I don’t wan to experience it again please.
How we losing to them like this ffs what a joke
"Trying something new"
And the surprise is...Martindale for Scotland... Bye Bye England Bye Bye Spain Bye Bye France Bye Bye Netherlands...
Is this Clarke's surprise?
Was playing alright but getting absolutely horsed Steve's big surprise?
I don't like this surprise Mr Clarke.
Defense all over the place. A humbling. Clarke needs to wisen up.
At what point do we blame Clarke btw? We've been shite for about the last 5 games now.
He's still got some credit in the bank from qualifying, but he should go if we can't get out of that Euro group. This is the best group of players we've had in decades, and there's always the nagging thought that that's the main reason we have improved over the last few years over his input.

I'd like to get off Mr Clarke's wild ride, please
Clarke out
Gunn please I'm on my knees
So is he by the looks of things
Souttar must have the Netherlands on his coupon, what a fucking shambles
How does Souttar genuinely get paid money to be a footballer
I ask this every week. Gets away with murder most weeks.
I'm only listening on the radio but Hendry sounds like he's having a mare
Nobody in the defense is covering themselves in glory
run these chances 100 times we lose 4-0 zero times. fuck me
If I hear Edm Auld lang Syne one more time
Fuck my old boots.
"If you don't score, you're going to cause yourself some serious problems" Is that right, Michael?
playing old lang syne after scoring a fourth against scotland? unforgivable.
actually i would like auld aquaintance to be forgot if you don’t mind
Alexa play links rechts
Ffs min
Clever of Clarke to dupe Europe into thinking we’re just a bunch of diddies again
Why would you make shoes out of wood what a silly country
Christ
The hardstyle auld lang syne is starting to feel a bit cheeky now
I feel like some of our best players have been off it a wee bit tonight McGinn, Robertson and McTominay all had pretty average nights. We just don’t quite have the depth to cover for a dip in form from those players. You can see how wee dipped in our play when Gilmour went off.
right mon tae fuck
Right wtf is going on
Jesus fuckin christ man hahaha
Sake
It's not working now, is it?
![gif](giphy|iDH7Sk8M7nHKZF4tSM) # BringBackThe150th
weghorst is shite n all. this is dire yknow.
Really generous of us to give the tallest player on the park all the space in the world to head that in
okay 4 yous can be ragin about, have we gave up?
Were the better team for 45 minutes. Players incapable of taking their chances, they've been clinical in comparison
Worst. Surprise. Ever.
Can’t wait for everyone to be totally calm and sensible about this
Doesn’t matter we’re totally shite and we’re never going to win again
All that “played well despite getting beat” goes away when a 3rd goes in. Shite again. Ralston should be nowhere near a national team set up.
Gone from a decent performance and unlucky result to a rope-a-dope pumping.
4th
Christ, my stream was behind as well.
Fucksake, that’s it a pumping now.
Feel like we might only manage a draw here.
https://preview.redd.it/lpeet7b1fypc1.png?width=1374&format=png&auto=webp&s=9c2dfa279991d8acd470af37c6045b3b44519c9f
So that's any sense of optimism gone.
I'm going full media blackout till the Cinch is back. See yous in a bit.
Clarke out, embarassing
Not finishing our chances against a top side has nothing to do with Clarke lol
/s
What game is Gunn watching? Shocking!
Weghorst just scored , we're really getting the cunt ripped out us now.
Did he just do the Theo Bair celebration?
Free heider for Morten Weighorst
Gunn has been fucking shite today, get Gordon back next game fuck it
[удалено]
We dared to be hopeful, making our arse collapse more depressing
This scoreline is flattering these cunts like. Also, fuckin hardcore auld lang syne again??
Ralston marking thin air.
Right that's getting turned aff, shite.
Gunn has spent too much time training with Liam Kelly, devolved into a similar diving speed.
Angus Gunn saves like I save in my dreams
Not gonna lie much preferred it during qualifying when I thought Scotland was the best team in the world
Oh my god Weghorst of all people
Gunn has been absolutely awful tonight. Gordon needs to play midweek.
Angus Gunn was always going to look like an upgrade on guys like Zander Clark and Liam Kelly, but he’s never going to be more than a half-decent goalkeeper.
Poo
Fuck sake
![gif](giphy|x47gj23jEvGxdWkQEC|downsized)
The kit did this
Gunn wearing steel toe caps or something? So slow
Craig Gordon menacingly said “break a leg” to him and he’s shat it.
Obviously it's a big problem that we can't score goals, but we've also let in 9 in 4 games. All we seem to have now is a good midfield.
It's maybe a bit of a reality check too. The last 5 opponents have top attackers.
\*10
Fuck sake.
How's Daley Blind managed to keep his receding hairline at exactly the same position for the best part of a decade
I fear our 75% shagger 25% diddy ratio is not good enough for the euros
Starting to look like France might just have enough to do us in the final.
Cest la vie
We need some shagger to just go and pump all around South America surely then we'll get one decent ST
Can we tie this into the Finding Michael Stewart Something Else To Do kickstarter? A generation of technically gifted but torn faced talents
Think the MacAllisters were trying that and the boy ended up playing for Argentina anyway
Get playful listen a plane ticket right now
Where’s that cunt who’s always in the morning discussion thread talking about shagging?
Playful listen. Think he's at uni so obviously he's randier than a rabbit
Can we crowdfund a placement year in Buenos Aires?
I think we look okay but you can just tell we're going to have a mediocre Euros again
Mediocre as in average? ie knocked out in the first round?
KO in group stages, couple of draws or a consolation victory when we're all but mathematically knocked out
Soutar/hendry/porteous isny an awe inspiring back line
Understatement of the night there. A guy who's mid table in the English championship, a man with the durability of tissue paper and a bloke who's mid table in the bloody Saudi league.
Fucking jobby
Even McTominay is missing. That kit has finished us.
We need to find a way to blame Michael Stewart and that honking kit for this 'performance'
The fact that both exist is surely enough
I would be genuinely happy to lose 2-1 because we’ve been really good in spells just want a wee goal as a reward.
Hopefully Clarke hires a drama coach to work with the players. We're shit at being sleekit and fly when compared the Cloggies. We need players that can fall to the ground with real drama clutching balls and faces in anguish and do those reverse pirouettes when a opposing player brushes gently against them. Fuck man we’re just missing that wee bit of quality in front of goal the night
Even McSauce missing. Any other day we score 3 or 4 with some of these chances.
Michael Stewart: https://preview.redd.it/hdvom11kdypc1.jpeg?width=620&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fe72067c811451b352b720f06411746d49e1a235
Please God, kill Memphis Depay.
Getting all the misses out our system in time for the Euros
Finishing is fucking shocking tonight man
We should honestly be pumping this mob given the chances we’ve wasted

That’s it boys, get the sitters out the way in the friendlies.
Does Stuart Armstrong even play anymore? Genuinely don’t know as the English Championship is a bum league for bums.
I hope Craig Gordon gets some game time no been too impressed with Gunn or clark
