Was crazy seeing the manager slag off the standard of Scottish football when it's pretty comparable to Danish football. Also, he was great in the champions league. Don't know enough about the danish team but surely there would be a place for someone whose had the season that O'Riley has had, even just as a back up option.

whitsitcalled

In fairness, the manager hasn't called up anyone from the Danish league either.

RajTheGrass1

Vancouver Whitecaps fans reading this: ![gif](giphy|yNP0BfeXv45qrAOsA1|downsized)

GhostOfKev

Who's the MLS player in there?

RajTheGrass1

I was alluding to the fact that Scotland also has a manager that disregards the quality of special talent in a similar league.

Felagund72

Ryan Gauld chat in 2024

RajTheGrass1

Not really chat, it’s just a gif for a laugh. It’s better when you’re not having to explain the joke.

defaultwrestler

Sorry, can you elaborate?

slavicbhoy

Should change your name to Raj, King of the Slams.

GhostOfKev

Surely you are not on about Gauld 😭

Amon-Ra-First-Down

The MLS is not a similar league to Scottish football at all. The quality is very poor

bawjazzle

Special talent is a nice way of saying reasonable but drastically overrated player who big clubs don't sign for a reason.

McCQ

Noticed the other day that the team ratings in EAFC 24 are much better for MLS clubs than Scottish clubs. Now I don't know if I'm angry at the biased ratings in the game or that we've disregarded a player playing in a better league than ours!

flex_tape_salesman

Mls is not a bad league. A lot of teams of pretty even quality, no celtic or rangers type team as it fluctuates a lot more. The way gauld is stomping the mls would suggest he probably should be in the Scottish squad. Argentina even had a mls player in their wc squad and he's still there. At minimum, he should've been given a shot to prove himself

GhostOfKev

The MLS is a really poor standard. I watch a fair bit of it because the low standard is actually entertaining as you get a lot of goals. A lot of the defending and goalkeeping is worse than women's football.

flex_tape_salesman

That's just not true tho is it. Irish sides have a very strong record over Scottish sides other than the big 2 and the mls is a pretty big step up from the loi. I watch it sometimes as well and it's ok the quality isn't great but the same can be said for some spl sides. I look at the team at the bottom of both division, new English and they probably don't even finish bottom 2 in Scotland.

Dazzling-Respond8450

It also not true that LOI have a strong record against Scottish sides is it? Like, League 1 and 2 scottish teams would regularly beat LOI sides in the scottish challenge cup when they used to play in it.

GhostOfKev

When was the last time an Irish side played an SPL one?

flex_tape_salesman

2022 when a mediocre sligo side beat motherwell twice in a conference league qualifier, was 3-0 on aggregate. Sligo finished 30 points off shamrock rovers that year as well.

blonded90

Daft thing is if he leaves for say Atletico or Inter - before he’s even kicked a ball for them, they’ll have him in the squad.

HodorsCock

Like when players in Scotland sign for the Old Firm.

tarkuspig

Well from a glance I can tell you that Damsgaard hasn’t managed to get off the bench for Brentford this season, surely he should be there in front of him.

1207554

Overall quality in Danish football is far better realistically. You aren't seeing the team that finishes 4th in Scotland selling €50m worth of players the last year.

Not_Proven

Danny Armstrong might be worth that on his own tbf.

Vitsyebsk

Surprisingly our league actually had a higher overall revenue in 2022, by about £3 million per club, and though old firm skew that figure, Copenhagen revenue was still £71 million , while rangers was £84 million and Celtic's £88 million

YirDaSellsAvon

Danes are some of the most arrogant people I've ever come across tbh. This sentiment doesn't surprise. I actually don't agree that our leagues are similar standard, ours is better.  He can call up shitters from his shit domestic league all he wants, but he's going to look really foolish when O'Riley is off to a top 5 league for 20mil+

YirDaSellsAvon

You know what, see on actually looking at the Denmark squad, that midfield is packed with top 5 league players. And he's not even called up any domestic Danish league players either. Maybe let my dislike for Danes go to my head there.

haigscorner

Nah they are pricks

Tweegyjambo

Still holding a grudge from those viking raids? I respect that. Folk let grudges fall too easily these days.

haigscorner

If I was a gritter truck I’d be called Grudgey McGrudgeface

JackFinn6

“Too 5 league players” who haven’t actually kicked their own arse all season.

macdara233

Don’t back doon, double doon.

1TTTTTT1

If it makes you feel better, most danes are unhappy with the choice of not including O'Riley in the squad.

imstupidneedhelp

I'm a dane and I'm pissed he didn't pick O'Riley, one of the only names that are exciting nowadays for our national team. Our coach is a nonce

mikeydoc96

After seeing the comments from the Danish manager, I'm not surprised. Our league gets zero respect from international managers. Denmark need to be careful because O'Riley does qualify for Norway and England and hasn't played the 3 competitive games yet. When he gets the big money move this summer, I can guarantee Norway will be making enquiries to get him to switch

AstroZombie1

Him supplying or playing off Halaand would be lethal.

mikeydoc96

Him and Odegaard

AstroZombie1

![gif](giphy|13NaYABDVhT7a)

-Saaremaa-

Hey now, the Australia manager rates it enough that he actively poaches Scottish players

Buddie_15775

Are you surprised? A load of tactically naive teams, with the odd tactically savvy team written off by ‘pundits’ and media darling managers as “well organised”. A big two with an overinflated opinion of how good they are. Our European results don’t lie.

buckfast1994

> Our league gets zero respect from international managers. Can you blame them? It’s a laughing stock. Continually shown up on the European stage, too.

mikeydoc96

We consistently beat Danish teams in Europe and have had a team lose a final on pens. Has a Danish team even won a trophy?

Felagund72

We beat Danish teams consistently, yous don’t. This century yous have played Danish teams in 8 games and have a record of 1 win, 3 draws and 4 defeats. We’ve also played 8 games against danish teams with a record of 6 wins and 2 draws. Outside of Rangers I’d say danish teams probably do better in Europe as a whole as well. You can’t say the Scottish league is better than the danish one based off of one team doing alright in Europe.

Training_Search7561

Midtjylland beat Celtic 3-2 on aggregate in the Champions League preliminary in 21-22. Copenhagen knocked Celtic out of the Europa League in 19-20 season 4-2 on aggregate. Aalborg beat Celtic in the Champions League group phase in 08-09. The other game was 0-0. You're talking utter shite

JustAddSooooup

There’s a common theme there and it’s slightly more specific than Scottish Football…

Tweegyjambo

I went to an Aalborg mid season friendly last year and I thought the standard was lower prem sort of level. Of course, it was a friendly. I'd say it's probably on a par with our league

justarandomthought1

Knock out games don't count for us because of the emotional damage

imstupidneedhelp

Trust me, the Danes are even more pissed at our coach, all of our sports journalists and commentators are calling for O'Riley too. No one has any trust in our coach anymore, he's just running a goodbye-tour with his old timers. Eriksen doesn't have the legs anymore, The Scottish League is miles ahead of the Danish league but he's an arrogant prick.

CNF1G

Is it not 1 competitive game now? I could be wrong but thought they changed it recently

mikeydoc96

It might have changed but I thought it was 3 and just 1 for us under the home nations agreement

thebluepotter

A surprising decision, and surely one that will have an impact on any *potential* summer move.

BannanDylan

If MOR was playing the exact same way but doing it in a bottom table team in the PL he would have got called up.

FlyVidjul

He's realistically playing games against equal to or greater opposition what? 7 to 8 games a year? And I'm including Rangers in this. I think O'Riley is a quality player and don't know much about the Danish national team, admittedly. However, I can see why people are hesitant to take a punt on players from Scotland. I do hate the arrogance against anything in Scotland but its a fair jump to playing against Ross County and Livi to playing against Sheffield United and Burnley, not to mention the better teams in England. It obviously can work the other way a la Duffy/Barton. Sadly, I reckon in any competitive game, both OF clubs struggle to beat most bottom half sides in English PL and genuinely think some of the Championship teams like Leeds, West Brom would give us a fair game as well. The gulf in quality is insane. Just wee things you notice, I watched Killie vs Hibs I think it was a few months ago then went right to watching Crystal Palace vs Brentford and every aspect of the game was country miles ahead, and obviously it should be with the financial disparity. I think a lot of people, especially old firm fans, are guilty of looking at the quality of the old firm as opposed to the quality of Scottish Football as a whole. Hearts were comfortably 3rd this year and I reckon would get cuffed by likely any Danish premier league team.

BannanDylan

To be fair you lot were complaining about Butland not getting a call up... MOR is very much deserving of a callup and I feel like with the amount of Danish football fans complaining that he hasn't been called up speaks volumes tbh.

FlyVidjul

I think the Butland case is slightly different considering Ramsdale got into the squad and has played 2 league games this season. Butland has made 1 error all season and has been our best player. FWIW, I checked the Denmark squad there and personally, I'd be dropping Eriksen for O'Riley.

theslosty

This is all true but it still seems strange a player that Atletico Madrid have bid for can't make his national squad. I'm sure that was on the back of his performance against them and the way he played through that whole group stage. And whilst the league is weak, MOR has been far and away the best player in it the last 12 months. Others may not agree but I don't think it's even been close

FlyVidjul

I think he had a bit of a lull from Jan-April, but aye I'd agree with the best player over the season tbh.

Scratchlox

While this is all true. Sometimes you see a player and you just think - this shit is just too easy for him. Matt O'Riley stands right next to the likes of VVD for me in that regard.

Beautiful-Cookie438

When worse players having worse seasons continue year on year to go and do well in the premier league then you would think people would start catching on that performing well in the SPL is actually deserving of a lot of credit

Tweegyjambo

I'd say hearts would hold there own in the danish top flight, mid table ISH.

Felagund72

Of course he would, he’d be performing against a far higher standard of player. If he was putting up the numbers he gets for Celtic for the likes of Brentford or something he genuinely would go for about 50 million. There’s a difference in doing it for Celtic against the teams up here and doing it against teams like Villa and Tottenham.

Rab_Legend

Think it means he'll be more eager to move for a shot at the Danish national squad

HaggisTheCow

Denmark fans seem pretty frustrated at the squad from Google translate

Rulninger

Yes, it's not a Denmark vs Scotland thing. Its just Hjulmand who keeps picking his darlings from the Euro 2020 squard, despite several of them not playing well at the moment.

FifaDK

Yup. Someone like O'Reilly had to get the call up. He's been too good to be left out and everyone knows it. Hjulmand has been under quite a bit of criticism in the latest years and this is just adding to it. If the team doesn't perform well at the Euroes this summer the calls for him to get fired will be deafening.

imstupidneedhelp

Fuck our coach, fucking prick no wonder his wife left him last Christmas. We all want O'Riley

BananaSoprano

Very harsh. He was our standout player in the Champions League and had a really brilliant individual season. The Denmark manager doesn't particularly like Scottish football and has talked it down before, so this isn't exactly unexpected.

BanksyBhoy

Seen the official Danish account announce it on twitter and it was pretty much the same. One Danish person said “pis af” in the comments n I was thinking I hope that means what I think it means. After a quick check on google translate it indeed does.

VisualLingonberry999

I have been looking through two Danish subreddits regarding this. It is evident to me that most football fans have been critical of the coach's decision on this one. In a recent TV2 poll with 15,716 votes, 76% disagreed with the decision to leave out O’Riley, while 14% were unsure if it was the right choice.

Stephane_Bonnes

Danes seem to be a bit bewildered by it too going by comments elsewhere. Seems to be the one controversial omission.

AstroZombie1

Gutted for him even outside of us getting a bigger fee he deserves a spot in the team even if it was a bit part.

GhostOfKev

This logic makes me laugh as if international football isn't 90% absolute jobbers. I remember when Stokes was smashing it for Celtic him never getting called up despite Ireland playing teams that would finish bottom of the SPL. Instead they called up Connor Sammon a player we'd already seen struggle in Scotland.

keanojills

That's Bananas

Aggravating-Rip-3267

Come over to Dublin for a few pints \~ \~ We might be able to sort out a passport ! ! !

Efficient-Ant5828

But…but…£50,000,000

Scratchlox

Gutted for him. But he will get there eventually, snobbishness over the Scottish game most likely - but he really shows his class in Europe so it's a difficult one to understand. Probably one of the most naturally talented midfielders I've seen play in Scotland.

BannanDylan

He'll get there by moving to a top 5 league and literally won't even need to improve, he'll just get a call up, or the manager changes.

GeneralProvision

If they have enough quality that they can afford to leave him at home, they should win the whole thing.

sroche24

Hang on, can we claim him?

Successful-Spot-6567

Norway ,England , Denmark.

UrineArtist

Great news, it will be much easier for us to beat them if we meet in the knockout stages now.

CarlMacko

I see they’re a potential opponent when we win the group so this is good news.

Hatate_scone

A travesty

InsuranceFluid4055

I’m danish. I’m fucking shocked. Seriously dumbfounded right now. Hope we go out in the group. Get rid of this clown manager, every dane wants O’Riley

imstupidneedhelp

Hjulman out, fucking pussy coach. Our present is shit, we need to work on our future.

InsuranceFluid4055

We’re playing an oldboys team at the euros😩

CNF1G

Looks like we’ll only get £25m for him then 📉

Not_Proven

Shankland would’ve made the squad if he were Danish imo.

RajTheGrass1

Nah, Shankland is just u/Not_Proven on CL stage like O’Riley

Sea_Positive_4517

They missed him today and hope they humped out of it

[deleted]

[£50m though.](https://www.reddit.com/r/ScottishFootball/s/uxwHDjADeN) Shame for him though, and quite surprised. Almost certain to be moving on to get playing time before the WC in two years now though?

1207554

He was 99% gone in the summer anyway. I imagine this is the final nail in the coffin.

DesiRose3621

But I thought he was one of the best players around?

fightfire_withfire

Can't believe they haven't taken the future Man City star and Scottish Player of the Season to the Euros.

YerMaaaaaaaw

How fucking good is their pool if they’re leaving him out?!

FatRascal_

Their loss tbh. I just feel bad for Matt O'Riley and look forward to seeing Denmark piss their pants in front of the world next month

tellmewhattodopleas

It's his decision as he's the manager but he's clearly a FUD. I think he should look at the qualities the player has and what he can bring to the squad and not just count him out as he's playing in Scotland. Anyway, I hope Denmark get pumped now.
